- On February 26, 2010, parts of northwestern New Jersey and the Hudson Valley of New York were all but paralyzed by a powerful winter storm. Some parts received just plain 'ole rain. But the areas that did not, received record amounts of snow. Amounts of 30+ inches were not uncommon. During this time period, NYSW SU-99 was sent westward from Little Ferry,NJ on the evening of February 26th and as they headed westward, they encountered snowfall and trees in their path. SU-99, having already received train-vs-tree damage to the lead unit, was then halted at Vernon,NJ and sat there for days due to the Metro-North Port Jervis Line being closed. On March 1, NYSW SU-99 finally headed westward towards the Norfolk Southern Hudson Secondary Track, only to encounter more downed limbs. Here is some video of SU-99 on the NS Hudson Secondary Track clearing snow and trees. Power is NYSW 3618, CSX 8828, NYSW 3010, and NYSW 3014. SU-99 dropped their train just north of Wisner Road to plow ahead. Locations seen are westbound at Hudson Street, Chester, then eastbound return to train at Craigville Road, Sugarloaf, and Airport Road, Warwick. Not the best of videos, due to my main camera being down....Enjoy. For video of this train before mine, check this out...

I remember what that used to look like. We used to have snow in Wisconsin.
you are not missing anything Jeff. it is still cold, white and slippery :) I hate the winters now. Boston.
A tunnel snoot? Or T2 snoot?
3014? that is a sd40t-2 tunnel motor
Was this New York or New Jersey?
I think he is referring to plowing the line. The Susquehanna runs over these tracks but they were owned and maintained by Norfolk Southern at the time. I'm surprised that nobody commented on the handrail damage on the front of the 3614. It's impressive how much damage a fallen tree can do. As for the impatient motorist driving around the gates; it happens all the time and little is done about it. The gates were installed for the public's safety but they think they know better. Next time you hea
Nothing wrong with going around the gate on a single track when the train has passed. Disappointing how long it sometimes takes for gates to go up.
nice video and awesome catch of the Susquehanna engine's plowing through the snow.

Whats the horn type on 3014????
Well done video!
Why FOUR engines?
Plows always on or just put on wheneeded?
Thank you.
Most northern railroads have those plows on always year round. I know Burlington Northern did. Four locos are enough power for whatever they encounter i suppose.
Is that a special plow fitted to the engine.
Why not plow while hauling freight?
Nice vid. Bad damage. Does anyone know the nearest NYS&W track near or in Monmouth Junction, NJ? And the nearest or literally in MJ an active freight line?
Very kewl!
Yeah don't want to have to wait at a crossing for FOUR whole locomotives to pass by. Why that might delay me 30 seconds lol
how do you mean "what NS should have done??"
@MilwaukeeSDman Some type of Nathan P5 horn.
