Eleanor, I love the genuine and spontaneous vibe of this video. I had not read the poem, Miss You or heard of the poet before this, and I'm delighted to have been introduced to both. The poem stirred me. I didn't feel it was negatively "sentimental" if by that you mean Hallmark cardish, cloying, using words and imagtes so unsurprising and hackneyed as to be boring. Didn't find it "sentimental if that's what sentimental means. I'm not learned in poetry theory or terminology, but it one aspect of a crafted poem it seems to me is its ability to suggest or call forth more than one thing (action, feeling, principle, idea) with a single phrase or line or stanza. Complexity, as you say Mr. Hirsh was talking about. I think this poem does evoke layers of feeling and image artfully. I currently miss more than one being who's left the planet not so long gone, and the poem made me think about what do I miss? Their physical self? Their counsel? Their protetion and care? The things we talked about? . Their dog? . . . Anyway, thanks so much for sharing this, bringing the poem to me, and getting me to think a tad about the themes you muse on, about the ways in which a poem can wield, (or not) craft, sentiment, simplicity, complexity.

Interesting video. I read this poem when it came out and then forgot about it. I did enjoy it at the time of reading, I think it is very direct and simple and so doesn't require any deeper thought or rereading. It's impact is immediate, it reminds me of a spoken word poem in that respect.

Eleanor, I love your channel. Just started listening. I love your natural charm combined with a genuine capacity for negative capability which makes for engaging inclusive critical thought. In the case of the poem for discussion I do agree it seems unfinished. I do not find it sentimental I find it unrealized. I was still able to enjoy it. I don’t have time now to go into details but wanted to share that. Thanks again. Bob

Thank you so very much for taking the time to write this comment. You made my day!! I am intrigued by your choice of the words "unfinished" and "unrealised" in reference to this poem. I think you have understood something that I felt but wasn't able to fully / properly describe. Yes, this is so helpful. Thank you!
Warm regards from my House of Possibility to yours, Eleanor.

a difficult question, because she is clearly grieving. Well, I think she is. If it's about a fictional person... then yes it's sentimental. It's just not my style.

Your comment is interesting! It is in fact about the poet’s mother (although that is not obvious from the poem itself).

Hello, and thank you so much for your kind offer. At the moment I’m not accepting any mail, but I just watched your video in which you recite your poem “Fly Little Bird” and I loved it. I encourage you to keep writing and I subscribed to your channel.
