Sebastian Smee sounds terrific and is new to me - I love the sound of "The art of rivalry". I'm so glad you have rediscovered the enjoyment of good art/art history writing. I like what Smee says about the importance of relationships with artists - and I think this helps with getting into art history and large art museums - not to be overwhelmed but to just pick one artist, find out a bit about them - and naturally, their friends come into view and you end up learning about many artists. But it can begin with one artist or one excellent writer on a theme whose enthusiasm fosters your interest.
Can I just say, great mind think alike I can't believe we picked Matisse and Picasso at the same time! Also Framed in September is just a sublime idea.
These books sounds so fascinating! I have put a hold on Paris in Ruins and the other one as well! I love a well written nonfiction about an artist or artists. One of my favorites is Spellbound By Marcel by Ruth Brandon. I think I read it just before I started my channel so I’ve never talked about it!
Wonderful - I will give this one a go
So many books and so little time. Happy reading to you.

Thanks for this, I haven't read any Smee for some reason, will search him out. Geez, 'The Art of Rivalry' has a fabulous cover - love it.
