    I was gifted the Leica R3 MOT as a Christmas present from my parents. I absolutely love this camera. Has been my most reliable camera, most amazing feeling camera and by far the best built film camera I have ever used. I just cannot explain how amazing this camera feels compared to many other cameras. I wish I could afford more than just one lens and one body, however I am extremely happy with what I currently have

    The R cameras have been overlooked and undervalued for many years
    The cost and weight of the native lenses has made them less desirable over the Japanese options

    Totally with you Matt on the R5. It has been my go-to film camera for years now and I have two of them (also have R7 and R8. For me the perfect handling is achieved with the 50mm Summicron. I find ergonomics and balance the best. The 50mm Summilux is just a little bit heavier which knocks the balance out for me.

    Well done sir! I love the R-series and have most of them from Leicaflex to R9. Perhaps you should have mentioned something about the cam system. The R3-R7 require stop-down metering with 1 and 2 cam lenses. Not a big deal. But if you use 1 or 2- cam lenses on R8/9, then you risk to damage the body. I wish you A Happy New Year!

    Nice to see the R series get some talk. I have the Leica SL, a still new in the box Leica R3-MOT, and the Leica R5. Glass for the R series seems to have always been less expensive (on the used market) than M glass, but then again not nearly as wide a choice as with the M series.

    At one stage I wanted to get to to the R system. But, assuming that I will be shooting a significant amount of film in the future, I will probably go for the Contax system instead.
    They have a couple of bodies with integrated winders which also are not as noisy as the average camera. That's kind of important because one of the things I do is shoot stage rehearsals. A Nikon system could do a similar job, maybe, with the benefits of AF. But all the motorised F bodies I have used are kind of noisy. Maybe the F4 could work but there are issues there too.

    I had a Leica R4 and several lenses including 2 zooms and 50mm and 100mm macro. I thought it was an OK camera but nothing really exceptional. Eventually I sold the kit and then standardized on Canon which actually had a better camera body and even the L lenses were better in many cases and always from a cost/performance perspective. I wish I had kept the lenses. All the youtube hype is causing the R lens prices to rise steadily and the R camera prices also. I don't have a desire to own an R again. But have acquired a Leicaflex Sl2. Wish I still had those R lenses for it. Minolta actually did a great job with building those zooms. I love the Leicaflex cameras that I think are more in line with the M series design/build approach. Not sure that the R series would ever entice me although an R9 with the Kodak/Leica digital back would be interesting.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Рік тому

      Thanks Erich! Yes I love the build of the SL bodies (see my videos) but I like the R5,6,7 diopter for critical focus. It was the cine guys that pushed the lens prices up (converting them to video lenses). Some R bodies are still really cheap vs most other Leica options.

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yes I noticed while looking at lenses that many were noted as video adjusted. However, I remember a time where I could have picked up a mint R7 for $200 or less. That was when everyone thought film was dead. I was still shooting film along with digital as I still do. But MANY others are doing that now also so film camera prices for cameras that are desirable are going into the stratosphere. But the increase is great to keep film being produced

    Merry Christmas. I guess you got that excellent Macro/all round Lens at a bargain since the R7 was in that buy. The Leica R5 (and Leica R-E) are a good buy, in the long run I guess for a user it is a better buy than the R6/R6.2, mechanical cameras can be "rusty" and stuck in the long run, electronic cameras often keeps running. Remember to avoid early versions of the R4 cameras, I would also avoid the R3 cameras. If you cannot like the high prices of Leica Lenses, I will recommend Canon SLR Cameras and Canon FDn Lenses, I had Nikon and I will any day say that Canon are better. One of the most annoying things with Nikon are the Nikon Lenses focus "the wrong way" !

      Hi Matt
      Here is an update from my mishap with the R7 , as I said the third time again the mirror went up and the curtains remained open for 3 hours or so .I took my son for a walk , left the camera on my desk and when I got back.the mirror didn't as previously go down, so I gave the bottom of the camera a slap . and to my surprise the mirror went down and the shutter closed , I thought this can only happen to a Canon T90 to release the the sticky magnets.. anyway I continued firing the shutter and it did stop a couple of times again hit the bottom firmly and the camera carried on firing , but I have noticed a marked shutter lag at all speeds !!!!!!!.
      well after reading some threads .which mention that the mirror has an air damper on the side of DOF knob which tends to become dirty and sticky and needs cleaning and lubricating. however to get at it is another story. is either dismantling the camera or to gain access you have to peel some of the side wall covering in the mirror box..I couldn't be bothered and got a quote for £175 plus Vat .this will hopefully get the camera serviced . and up and running properly, rather than going for a second hand one with an unknown history.
