This is the best explaination I've found about the Leica R mount variants. Thank you so much, you have saved me a lot of grief!
Just bought my first film camera a couple of weeks ago (a Leica RE). This video was incredibly helpful for picking up a lens for it 👍
Thanks for the info
R8's are incredible cameras!
Great explanation by the way!
Hi there,
thank you for your comment. 😁
The R8 is really great. A little bit bulkier than the R7 but with so much functions. I would like to try the digital back for once. But they are really rare and so expensive. 😅
Using an R-Mount is a bit like being the Count from Sesame Street: "1, 2, 3! 3 Cams...ha ha ha."
It's a gorgeous system and you can really see the partnership between Leica & Minolta. The problem, though, is that it's so rare to find them in good condition. They seem to not hold up like the M over time, and it's such a shame there's so little repair resources for this. If you're going to look into this system, just be aware that the glass prices are unreasonably over-inflated due to Cinematographers converting these into Cine lenses
THREEEEEEE! It’s a THREEEEEEEE333333!!!! 🤣
I had no issues with the cameras yet, but as you said. If it’s broken, it is broken.
And I agree. The lenses I got into my hand, are pretty good but not what I expected of the name Leica. It is maybe just my expectation and not that much the name. But 400€ for a 30 year old 50mm f2 are a liiittle crazy. 🙃
looking to make a Leica R 35-70 f4 Rom to Nikon F mount for my F3... Hope it works
Good luck with your project. I once build a canon fd into an EF mount, which worked well, but not on close focus, where it collided with the mirror of the 5D.
… and I thought the history of the Nikon F mount was complex 😂 great information video!
Thanks for the compliment. 😁
I thought before, that canon was complicated with their overengineered fd mount and later with EF and EF-S but now I am a little grateful that they made clean cuts and let compatibility behind when it was the better option in their eyes. 🙃🙂
@@manugeee I do like the approach from Nikon and Pentax the most. They even did AF lenses with the same bayonet and kept backward compatibility.
@@tomscameras that is indeed very cool.
I started with canon, so I newer new what the others did. 😅
Very simple but exhaustive summary of this non simple topic. Be careful at low price Leica lenses on eBay. They are generally with only one cam and so with constraint to use with R3-R7 cameras which are great and far cheaper today.
So it is better to buy a older Leicaflex or the R3 because the Lenses for the R8 are very expensive and it doesn't work with the older lenses.
It depends on the camera or the lens you have or want to use. For shure there can be problems with some combination. But you do not need to buy the too expensive rom lenses. If you want to use something below the r8.
Very clear, thanks a lot. I plan to buy a R8 and I ask myself if I’ll be able to mount the 3 cam R lens on my M camera and with which adapter.
Thanks for your comment :-)
I hope you have fun with your R8. Mine had unfortunately an issue and I had to sell it as „defect“ In the end. So, I would recommend you to buy from a seller with warranty.
Please make more Leica R lens videos!
It will not be my only focus on this channel because there are lots of other beautiful cameras as well. 😎
But the next one will be about a Leica lenses as well. In fact this video was planned to be part of it but became to large and a topic for itself. But afterwards there will be other topics as well. 😁
Hi, what are the cheapest lenses to buy on Leica R8, Thanks!
Hi there,
Hard to say. I got the 135 f2,8 3-cam for 180€ but sometimes it is also for 250€ to buy. The Summicron 50mm f2 is very common and versatile, but goes for 400€ the wide angles 24 and 28mm are very expensive. But this is almost everything I have directly in mind.
I would not go for the zoom, because I don’t like zooms that much. So this is my personal thing.
There are much more lenses, but they are not that common and I did not see them a lot on eBay and if yes, then they have a price.
I think I have heard of the R-only lenses being called 3rd cam because technically they have ONLY the third cam, cams #1 and #2 being eliminated.
I think both could be correct. In my researches it was called R-Only because it’s only working on this cameras. But it is also the third cam, Leica introduced.
:-)
Hi...! Ihave a Laicaflex (mark 2 / 1966-67) with a Sumicron 50mm f:2 and an Elmarit 35mm f:2.8... Can I use these lenses on a Leicaflex SL...? Thanks.
Well I can’t answer this, because I don’t know which kind of lenses you have exactly.
But the leicaflex and leicaflex sl should work with a lens if the lens has the first and the second cam.
Can ı use the m39 and m42 lenses in leica r mount ?
I don’t think so. I have not heard about adapters in this direction. But there are adapters for Leica R lenses on Leica M Mounts.
Hi sir I have Leica camera v-lux 114 what lens should I buy??
Hello John Eric, as I have looked up. The V-Luv 114 is a bridge camera and has no interchangeable lenses. :-)
@@manugeee so I cannot used other lenses??no compatible lenses at all ??
@@johnericksalonga7652 you should not be able to detach the lens of the v-Lux 114 of you camera. It seems to be a fixed lens. Therefore no other lenses canon be attached to it.
can ı use all off them with r3? ı dont care metering to much?
Hi there, yes. you should be able to use the 1- and 2-cam lenses when stopping down your lens manually and metering the light intensity. As the ROM Lenses also should have the 3rd cam, they should be compatible. Best would be, if you have a good picture of the back of the lens, if you buy online.
@@manugeee ı find 35mm f2,8 for 220 dolar ıf ı can use manuelly ı buy ıt doesnt matter ıf ı can use ıt thanks bro
FINALLY someone that has explained clearly and with images what the differences are.. Now I know what to look for when buying a lens.. Thank you very much! Keep the videos coming!
Thank you very much, as well. 😃
