As you can see the video focus on the Sigma is definitely slower than the Sony but still does a decent job. Colours on the other hand, something weird going on with one of the lenses. Have a look for yourself and comment what you think.

you actually sold me on the weather sealing and motor AF. It's the little things that actually get me more.
Nice comparison. I was wanting the Sony 1.4 but the store was sold out so I purchased the Sigma 1.4 (camera A7R3). I was very surprised, pleasantly, on the performance of the Sigma. One of my favorite lens now.
Great review . Pretty straightforward with real world samples as opposed to charts and brick walls . That Sigma glass looks promising for the Sony system .
Thanks mate appreciate the feedback :)
Great demonstration between the 2 lenses. Thankyou to you and your subject.
Sigma 50mm 1.4 is one my favorite lenses.
Nice vids, keep em coming!
Great work. Thanks for the comparison.
Seems like there are less performance gap in 50mm compare to 35mm.
Ziess and sigma.
Maybe because 35mm art is the first art lens although 35.4z is also older than 50.4z.
I think I should buy 50.4 Art lens.
Thanks, Buddy!
Damn, nice review. I’m so torn. I’m a hybrid shooter. Not sure what to get.
Hmm.. I need to convert a Sigma 50mm to a native FE lens. This native performance is really impressive.
Thanks. Saved me money. Don't regret getting the Sigma at all now.
It’s still a great lens
Please fix the broken link to download the files. I'd like to see/compare. Thanks.
Very nice review
Hi, the raw files link is down...
Hello, i have a problem with my lens 50mm f1.4 zeiss, every time the AF tracking motor focuses on an object, there is a slight noise. is that normal?
Could you please share RAWs again? Link is broken...
Hi! Do you think 50 1.4 zeiss will be better then 24-70 2.8? Crisper and sharper?
I heard Sigma art for the e-mount was slow on focusing..looks to be doing fine to me
Yeah it’s really good. Same as Sony. Just the video focus is a bit slow.
the link for the RAWs isnt avaible
I got the sigma glass but the zeiss’ 3D pop effect is lovely.
Hey can you please elaborate on this? I recently bought the sigma but a part of me feels that I should’ve purchased the Zeiss instead..
Nice review. Too bad the link for the RAWs broken.
Which has better bokhe?
Nice comparison, thanks for taking the time to do it. Would love to see a comparison between the 85mm GM and 85mm Art (e-mount).
I could do. As soon as I saw the 85 art I just thought it’s way to big no ones going to buy it lol
Chris Turner Yeah, that plus the lack of aperture ring is a negative for me but the price difference is too significant to ignore. Hard choices. I am kind of sold on the 50mm Art based on your videos, FWIW.
If you want an 85 I’d go for the Batis over the Sigma or just pay the money and get the Gmaster.
Chris Turner The GM is at the top of my list. Unfortunate for my wallet.
Hahahaha yeah it’s definitely a better lens. I say go for the Batis cause it’s really nice and it’s weather sealed and light. But yeah. Just remember it’s more down to the user than the lens.
Notice the Zeiss's bokeh has more oval shape and hard edges?
THE LINK IS DOWN...
I am very curious about a comparison between the sigma lens with e mount and the one with the mc 11 adapter. I still think they just have a mc 11 built-in. I love your reviews. Thanks!
Hey mate I may do a video but no they are definitely not just the adapter built in. It works much better you can see it in this video
that1cameraguy just did a comparison of between native and adapted ua-cam.com/video/kyoXC9fcCjg/v-deo.html
Super thanks!!
My 50mm 1.4 Planar, happens to be my favorite lens to shoot with, and currently own 85mm 1.4, 25 f2, and 90mm 2.8 macro... just extremely sharp at 1.8 for me.
Hey shine,
I am trying to decide between the 50mm 1.4 planar and the 55m 1.8
Quick question :) Do you ever notice autofocus issues during video for the 50mm 1.4? Does it stay locked on focus pretty good at 1.4?
Im still looking forward to the 35mm comparison.
Will definitely do that :)
davidrd85 same here!
Same here
davidrd85 meeeee tooook
Lord, you took the words right out of my mouth
Waiting for 35mm comparison between Zeiss, Sigma and Samyang.
Thumbs up!
Vladimir Velickovic a good copy of the samyang will beat a good copy of the other two in sharpness across the frame wide open and ca control. I had all 3 and the Canon l ii as well.
would you go with the sigma 50mm 1.4 over the Sony 55mm 1.8?
No. When the sigma first came out I’d probably say yes but now I think the 55 is better.
Which one of these do you prefer if you’re just shooting pictures with it? No video. Or should I opt for the 55? What do you think Chris?
Javed White is get the 55 tbh. If you had to pick one of these 2 I’d probably get the Sony just for reliability (if you were a professional) but I have the 55 and I love it
Chris Turner Photographer thanks Chris. Appreciate the fast response brother!
How those the Sigma looks after lens corrections? Does it remove the CA?
Yep looks fine when corrected. You can download the raw files yourself in the description
Nice
How about Sigma ART 50mm 1.4 E-Mount vs samyang 35mm 1.4 emount. Which one is best for AF and photo quality?
does the sigma lens make some noise when auto-focusing? thanks!
Jesse King actually its quite silent... !
Doesn't it just get a bit crazy at the edge because the focus points dont extend all the way to the edge?
No, the image was focused on the same central point on both lenses. Focus points don't focus independently, they just give the camera the ability to detect focus phase on that area when needed.
Thank you for doing this! Great review. Any way to compare the Sigma to the Zeiss 55mm? That's its competition monetarily. IMO people looking at this lens are not the same people thinking about the Gmaster Lens, but that's just my opinion. Thanks again and keep em coming.
Disagree. 1.8 is not 1.4. If you’re comparing price points, then yes, but 1.4 wide open will be at another level. Also, there is not a 50mm G Master.
so the sigma 50 f1.4 stays quite during the whole autofocus process, right? that's a good news!
sorry I meant quiet...no af noise
Pretty much. Quiet enough that the camera doesn’t pick it up
Is it possible to use eye AF in video mode?
No only face detection :) that would be cool tho
wow first comparison on youtube! i hope you could post the actual weight of the lenses. thanks.
AtitG google
Sigma - 815g, Sony - 778g. Wash.
Hey how was the manual focus on the Sony since its a wire?
Average. Much prefer the mechanical. Just my opinion
It is not that the sigma is bad, it does the job, but you also have to consider that the price is less than double what the Zeiss costs and defends itself, in color it depends, all lens brands have a different color, you have to configure At least that is what I do if I don't like color, I never work a camera as it leaves the factory, I always put my personal touch on it.
Hey chris, thanks for this. Quick question: sigma 50 1.4 or sony 55 1.8? For photos. Cheers!
Honestly I’d probably go 55
@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Just what I was hoping you'd say. Haha thanks Chris!
@@josemarivictorsilayan9167 why would you go with the Sony 55? The sigma it's much sharper especially corners
@@dottorcarlone 1st it's a native lens therefore making it more reliable with autofocus. 2nd it's much smaller and lighter. why'd you go mirrorless anyways?
Hey Chris, schweeet video as usual - did suss out the raw files and played around in Lightroom with them - personally find the Sony 50 and the Sigma on par with each other.
My question though, as I know you're a mad fan of the 55mm 1.8, will you now be replacing your 55mm 1.8 with this new Sigma 50mm?
(specifically speaking in regards to Wedding photography and not cinematography).
I just sold off my Canon FD SSC 50mm (which was gorgeous) and have come to the fact that I need to pick up a 50 but with AF.
Small form factor doesn't worry me, but I do want sharp glass and reliable autofocus.
Yeah I’m using the Sigma 50mm now. Mostly because I like 50 at 1.4. I’d be happy with either to be honest. I don’t think it really matters too much haha
Cheers mate, makes it nice and easy then haha - whichever I can get for a better price lol.
Hello please update the raw link, it's down :(
Sir, link is still down sir. (up)
(up)
Are you sure the Sony Zeiss doesn’t have a rubber gasket? It looks like it does from what I can see.
No. It doesn’t
How did you capture the screen during video? Sony’s manual even states that face detect autofocus is disabled with a monitor connected via hdmi.
I just used the Atomos Ninja 2 recorder. No idea why they say that haha maybe it’s only with the new recorders? I didn’t do anything special.
Chris Turner okay. I know my A6500 did in fact disable it with an external recorder/monitor. Let’s hope my A7iii doesn’t! Lol
Yeah I wouldn’t think so. I use a SmallHd monitor for all my UA-cam videos and face detection works perfect
Chris Turner quick question, so do you see the face detection box around your face before and after hitting record with the smallhd connected? Thanks.
Yep, only if I have the info setting on under HDMI settings
thought someone should point out, there is a problem with the raw downloads link
Yeah I’m going through them. Some of the links have been blocked for an unknown reason
Please, I need help between sigma 50mm f1.4 and sony zeiss 55mm f1.8 for video purpose, which one will you choose? And why? It really help me a lot if you answer.. thx before
f/1.4 is better at light than f/1.8. Also, you get much better bokeh at f/1.4. So, that would be my starting point.
Was this filmed with the lastest firmware update?
It was filmed 3 years ago so prob not
this is interesting, I have heard people say the background on the Sony is smoother, but in this video with the trees, the background looks almost identical, and the image quality is so close that it's splitting hairs, and if anything I give the edge to the Sigma, but the Sony seems to hold focus better and grab focus a little faster in video. I'm surprised it's the sigma with the rubber gasket and not the Sony, for me personally, because I shoot mainly photos, I would buy the Sigma, what I found funny in this video is how you said at 5:20 things like the Sigma works as good as the native lens, but what you really mean is as good as the Sony lens, because they are both native E mount lenses
Agree with everything, that’s the problem when you make UA-cam videos without a plan haha say random stuff.
The Sony will have a better resale value too!
bad link for raws...
Fix the link, please. I'd like to compare.
Very nice review. Thanks very much.
Do you know how is AF noise in video mode?
Really quiet eh. Huge improvement
Chris Turner That's brilliant. Thanks :)
Thanks for this review - is the lens quite enough to use it for Vlogging with a shotgun microphone?
A 50mm for vlogging? I doubt it. I use the Zeiss Batis 25mm and 18mm for vlogs
I know but the focussing noise on this is going to be a good reference for what the new 20 and 24mm are going to sound like ;)
Hey chris,
I got a quick question man,
Ive been contemplating for days between the sony 50 1.4 and 55 1.8
I mainly do wedding videos and want the sony 50 but read reviews that it hunts alot for focus and pulses in and out of focus during movement
Have you had any issues with this with your 50mm? Or is it pretty reliable
Get the 55. Trust me
Chris Turner ahhh really??
Is it cause of the autofocus mainly you think?
I’ve compared them side by side, the 55 is so similar to the 50 but way less money, the 55 focuses better, it’s tiny, it has less CA.
Chris Turner damn, i see!
In terms of video the 55?
I feel like the 50mm is more for photo where you can take your time focusing on the person
I’d take the 55 for both
Sigma is very loud in focusing.
Hi Chris have you received my email?
I’m not sure I’ll have to check ✌🏼
do not buy the sigma lens is very bad backlash
