- Red Bull's Max Verstappen is on the pole for the Miami GP ahead of the two Ferrari drivers (Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz) - but it was close, and the conditions were demanding. In this video Peter Windsor details Max's driving through the high-speed esses in S1 and looks at some of the other key moments, including the strange radio message given to McLaren's Lando Norris (who qualified fifth) and the relative top speeds in the final phase of qualifying (Q3).

Lando, the better you drive, the better you drive
I thought it was funny when brundle and co were like, “that isn’t quite saying the throttle is on the right and brake on the left, but close to it” re message to Lando
Love your review thanks Peter
Thanks Peter.
Max's car looks like it's an arrow which turns so sharp.... The consistency in which he does it back to back is amazing 💪💪💪
That's what Alex has said in some interview that went viral weeks ago. What makes him Great.
The answer to "How can you put Charles Leclerc up there with Max?" cannot be "We saw that today." It has to become "We saw that every single weekend for the past 20 grand prix". And there will never be a day when we can truthfully give that answer. So that is exactly why he's NOT up there.
He is up there.
@@nikespeedempirenah 'end this nonsense' says he has to be P2 every race for 20 in a row. For some reason.

Now Lando joins the club!
I love the way Peter gives a detailed and objective analysis of events. He's always my first port of call - not to learn what happened but, far more importantly, why. The way he stays cheerful and avoids partisan dramas demonstrates his clear and ongoing love of F1.
Tx..always interesting
I wonder how much longer before people start recognising that this Max domination is a privilege to see, a once in a lifetime talent who hopefully will go on to break every record there is in F1. Go Max.😊
what are you smoking man? It's clearly the car
@@TheFeelhigh Then why is Perez losing to both Ferraris?
@@robertblue4630perez is NOT loosing to Ferraris just look at the driver standings. Redbull is the best car clearly. Lets not try to sensationalize Max’s results just because Perez is mediocre qualifier
It's not a privilege, it's a god damn disaster. This sport is dying, like literally dying. 600,000 fewer people watched the last race, and it continues to drop every race.
@@robertblue4630 because Checo is a fking terrible driver lol.
Max tends to slow a bit in the first sector so he still has tires left for the rest of the lap, he's doing this pretty much all the time on most tracks. Others going purple sector 1 and just not getting a good lap from that. Then Max tried to improve in his second run getting purple first sector and guess what, he was slower overall.
He's just looking at things more long term caring more about the end result than the first step. Just like how Ferrari tends to waste a lot of their P1 time on soft tyres to focus on quali, while Max is doing more long runs focussing on the actual race.
Because the points are won in the race, not qualifying.
Very interesting points. Sadly most people won't see these subtleties. And despite all that, he is on a seven consecutive pole.
@@johanb.7869 Yes obviously, but for whatever reason others don't seem to do it.
Just like how, almost consistently, the cars that are slow overall ending up in the back of the field tend to be the fastest through the speed traps. It's Williams now, before that it was Renault. Every time, throughout the years, the backmarkers tend to have the highest top speeds. But somehow none of them realise this and think about focussing more on the corners (which also lowers tyre wear, again focussing on the race more than single lap performance) will give them overall better results.
@@Phaevryn Hulkenberg had the highest top speed, 341. But it's the overall package that gets you wins. Top speed alone won't cut it.
@@johanb.7869 Yeah this time, but Haas is also a back marker generally.
Stroll never disappoints...
Love everything you do Windsor always on point
Did you watch his previous video where he absolved Lewis of blame for the crash at the start of the Sprint, and pinned it on Alonso and Norris?
@@hamza-chaudhrythe two Astons crashed before Lewis was even there. It was still a bit late by Lewis but he didn’t cause the crash. Quite clear from alonso’s on board

Going to be a interesting race with the 2 Ferrari's behind Max.
Has technology evolved enough by now that Pirelli can do track analysis and put out track specific compounds? That is all the drivers talk about is how awful the grips are for these tyres.
How about they just stop all this street circuit nonsense and stick to dedicated tracks with professionally maintained surfaces so they aren't having to come up with new compounds constantly for these parking lots?
@@Swiggityswaggerthe most sensible action here - Miami and vegas are not dedicated tracks.
Suzuka and Spa are examples of beloved, cared for tracks. Street circuits bring money and drama, which is all they are worth for F1 now as that is they care for.
@@Swiggityswagger i guess because these parking lot tracks help the sport to grow the most for new dts fans
@@Swiggityswagger👍👍👍
Peter completely overlooked the fact the Mclarens were on mediums in Q3 as well
Sector 1 looks pretty difficult
Looks like Audi made the right choice
It went unnoticed that Sarge got p10 in the sprint and Albon was 14th; as well as being ahead of Alex in the Sprint Quali.
Because Albon is British 😮 don't you get it yet 😢
No one cares about that grid filler, as if he does something of note

Everyone saying that Charles is as quick over one lap to max obviously doesn’t see the results of qualifying after qualifying where his one lap ability hasn’t come through
Qualifying is usually the highlight of a race weekend for me.
I believe medium tyres should be compulsory for qualifying.
I just watched recording. Lewis on mediums only 1000ths behind Russell’s fastest soft tyre run? Had to do a double take, thought I was seeing things.
Stroll outqualied Fernando…again; both out of q3?
Explains a lot of the childish Lew glazing
@@Karma2Babylon It's a bit ridiculous when drivers have to preserve their tyres during a qualifying lap

Peter, who was the last driver to win the WDC who was NOT driving a dominant car?
Exactly otherwise Stroll would dominate
Hamilton?
Verstappen 2021
It still applies, Peter, how can you put Charles in the same place as Max?' Charles is a fast boy but has not yet proven to you in any way that he would also be a world champion in material! Charles is the same generation and the same age as Max and has now been driving in Formula 1 for 6 seasons. Charles is absolutely fast, perhaps the fastest over 1 lap in the entire field, but Charles also makes so many mistakes. And now consider the start of the sprint race, Max had a bad start and Charles had a better start and yet Charles let Max go in the first corner. And that is not only the result of sensible and mature thinking, no, it is also because he does not have the balls or the killer mentality that a Max or a Lewis has! And in addition, Max has made it clear to literally everyone in the field right from the start of his career that he always has that killer mentality! And now every driver in the field has that in the back of his mind: "Max doesn't shy away" that is the mentality of a real World Champion, not Charles..... Peter ;-)
I totally agree. Same applies to Lando and George, they are quick but don't have the last 5% that makes a true champion like Max, Lewis, Michael, Ayrton etc
I agree but I wish people didn't emphasize the world championship so much.
I believe MAX is a generational talent but Charles, Carlos, Lando, Lewis or George would be champion in that car. That's not to say any of them would perform as flawlessly week after week as Max
Absolutely right .
@@fintonmainz7845if Max and Charles swapped teams nothing would change😂
@@soostdijk if it makes you happy believing that: go for it
Question: why mentioning RedBull first and then Max?
If Max wouldn't have entered this qualification, everyone would think Ferrari was the superior car since they both beat the RedBull (Perez), now would't they?
The thumbnail is perfect 👌 ❤
Perfect picture for a "caption competition"
The radio messages to Lando have been questionable lately. Wasn't it also during the Chinese GP where they were telling Lando how to drive?
I think Ferrari made a HUGE mistake with the Hamilton deal. Only thing dumber was the pajamas the blue boys wore.
Time will tell. People seem to think Sainz is some kind of Verstappen. He isn't.
Pirelli tires are terrible
I’ve just realised from the thumbnail that Max doesn’t have straight eyes… which would explain many of the instances where he crashes or takes other drivers out. That is when he doesn’t have a rocketship and is out front all on his own.
Hmmm so how do you explain the Hungarian 2022 and Belgian 2022 Grand Prix where he came from 10th & 14th respectively to win🤔
@@MegaStingz Every day a clock that is wrong is twice right. It was also a AN rocket ship.
Peter thinks the telemetry is useless, and the race engineers are idiots. Amazing frog in the well analysis, by a journalist
Don't you realize that he worked for winning team as a manager? As well as with some of the most talented drivers of the 70s and 80s?
He's right about what the engineers are saying, because telemetry only shows you some of the inputs of a driver but not the whole picture, most of the new gen, they think being fast is about braking late and lines, but it's really about how do you settle your platform and being in sync.
He’s right go check the Alex albon interview for High performance he underlined this fact because for example with max he couldn’t see on telemetry how to do like him and it’s the point of the short corner things
Verstappen a machine! Best driver since Jimmy Clarke .
The track is awful. The women's race was great because the tatuus f4 cars are what should be racing here. It's just not an F1 track, going to be a terrible race i would suspect.
My analysis: Mercedes PU sucks
I fell asleep during Q2. Apparently as usual, I missed nothing. Miami may be the worst race of the season. Just a horrible track.

I wonder how much longer people will pretend this Max domination isnt boring. The whole point of these budget rules were to make it more competitive. That didnt work out so well did it?
The main point was to stop dirty air to make racing better.
It IS more competitive, just not for first place.
Budget rules don't change the fact that max is head and shoulders better than everyone else on the grid
I do believe you should watch on board. Racecraft involves consistency, track and car connection, and tyre management. Watching on boards you can see the way he controls a rather unstable setup by most standards.
If you continue to tell yourself its boring then it will be boring.
Peter, I enjoy your knowledge of F1, however all you need to do is record one video and play it after every qualifying season and race. F1 has become a joke. It’s boring, predicable and a snore fest. Thanks FIA.
This sport is absolutely dead. Please someone just take us out of our misery.

Stop watching and, more importantly, stop bothering folks who do like it.
You're likely supporting a washed up driver... It's obv not nice to see Hamilton fumbling around like a bum. That stroll like action in the sprint was horrific so he can't race anymore cause...and then usually he can drive a lap but thats not there anymore either.
