  • The Rockler Doweling Jig Kit with Bit and Stop Collar gives you a strong joint with perfectly flush faces, every time. That's thanks to two stops that let you reference off of the end or edge of your stock for perfect alignment. The stops also allow easy repeatability when batching parts, and dovetailed ways make it easy to slide the stop out of the way when it's not needed. A depth scale is molded into the back of the jig to make setting the drilling depth dead simple. Each jig includes a corresponding drill bit and stop collar. Just clamp it in place, drill and you're done!

    I recently built a cabinet for our kitchen garbage and recycling cans, that also has two areas for storage of dog food, extra food and water bowls cleaning supplies and other odds and ends. I made my own self-centering dowel jig to drill dowel holes for the adjoining sections. At the time, I didn't have hardened steel tubing, and I would have had to buy considerably more than what I needed,, so I used softer metal tubing that has thicker walls than standard tubing. Still, it has worn some with use, so the drill bit doesn't fit snugly anymore, but I have since found some hardened steel spacers amongst my stash that were previously used in automotive disc brakes. With those, I can now make a better self-centering dowel drilling jig.

    You were able to very easily slide that dowel into the hole.....my Rocker dowel jig must have been fitted out with a 1/16 too small drill bit. For the life of me, I can't get dowels to work for any of the sizes. I actually have to sand the dowels before I can get them inserted.

    • @NathanBLawrence
      @NathanBLawrence 3 роки тому

      If you need to drive a piece into the face and can’t register against any of the sides of a work piece, this is really where doweling points shine. Sadly, there’s no easier alternative.

    • @rockler
      @rockler  3 роки тому +2

      Rockler's new Doweling Jigs are designed for drilling holes into the ends or edges of workpieces only. For "T" style joints, where dowels on the edges or ends of one part must insert into dowel holes in the face of another part, first drill the dowel holes into the ends/edges of that joint part. Then insert metal dowel centers (sometimes called dowel points) into the dowel holes - their pointed tips will help you establish centerpoints for the dowel holes that must be drilled into the face of the other part by pressing the workpieces together. The best way to drill these "face" holes is to use a drill press with a brad-point bit installed. Carefully line up the tip of the drill bit with the prick marks left by the dowel centers, and bore the dowel holes. A drill press will ensure that these "face" holes are drilled squarely into the second workpiece. Another option would be to mount your handheld drill/driver into a portable drill guide that will help you drill these holes accurately and straight into the mating workpiece. See the links below to learn more about dowel centers and Rockler's Portable Drill Guide.

    Would have loved to see a face to end-grain joint in the middle of a board (i.e.: attach a vertical partition in the middle of a bottom cabinet panel, as there does not seem to be any support for keeping the jig in place on the wood face while drilling. Looks like it could work for end joints (shelf to cabinet side) but I think it becomes difficult to align in some situations.

    Those dowel holes aren’t very tight. Most likely because of the non clamping approach to attempting to hold the jig steady with hand compared to clamping it.
