    When I was watching a rerun of "Ghost Fly" a couple hours ago, I thought back to this video. I thought it would at least be worth mentioning that there are apparently several 'inanimate' objects in Finn&Jake's house that actually became ghosts.
    Tables and chairs and even soup all had spirits, and Jake saw this for himself. You'd think that might make him a little more sympathetic to Sword Finn (I feel obligated to call him that from now on), since he knows that everyday objects could possibly be alive.

    I also like how only the reflective part of the sword was broken. Its actually completely intact as a sword. you can still swing it and cut people FINE. it only became busted in that the living person inside seems to have died or left. There is no reason why finn can't keep using finn sword as a sword if he really is just an object.

    The storyline of Finn is about growing up. Everyone can relate to him. In season 1, Finn is a child, naive and has what we call the omnipotent childhood. Season after season, Finn becomes a teenager, knows love, breaking up, family troubles, deceptions, insecurity. For me, Finn's sword is a representation of his ego. Psychiatry discover that in the processus of growing up, the ego is destroy and we have to reconstruct one when we are a teenager. That destruction cause very often a deep depression where we haven't no more love for ourselves and don't know who we are. The Finn's sword storyline represent all these things

    Another great video, man. I'm glad to see someone still give AT some love, even after its drop in popularity. People just call it an edgy show nowadays because of Finn's rocky decisions and its serious tones but your detailed evaluations show that there is real substance in each episode that depicts his growth (both negative and positive) and the growth of the story in realistic ways. Perhaps that's why people were put off by the show. They suddenly saw that the innocent, righteous hero was indeed human and prone to making terrible mistakes just like everyone else.

      There are still a lot of people who love this show, especially after Stakes. The reason that it's not as popular as it used to be is because of CN's horrible scheduling and lack of advertising. From the FB page of AT a lot of people commented that they missed the season 7 finale, as there were ZERO advertisements promoting the episodes.

    Awesome essay. Finn sword = a sword made out of a Finn. Sword Finn = a Finn in the form of a sword. Really makes a difference! Interesting that you uploaded this now, since I was just in the middle of an AT marathon with selecting only episodes about Finn's swords, i.e. the ones where he loses and obtains the successive swords. Interesting to see how his attachment to the swords grows over time.
    It would also be interesting to compare Finn sword with Grass sword. Finn sword is another Finn, originally identical to Finn, but is a distinct person and the two often disagree, as you've pointed out. Grass sword over time becomes more and more an integral part of Finn, literally an extension of his arm and is much more objectified by Finn, and even gets ignored for the whole time Finn owns Finn sword. You said Finn treats Finn sword like his own reflection and ignores its personhood, but that's still a step ahead from the Grass sword, with which he has no direct interaction. When he buys it, the grass sword appears to have a mind of its own too, but once its a part of Finn, it's no longer granted any subjectification. This poses interesting questions for the future. Grass Finn is not just Finn sword in humanoid form, it's a combination of Finn sword and Grass sword. One is an alternate Finn, the other is a part of original Finn. The basis material is the same, but their experiences are different. What will come out when you mix them?

    Deeply, thank you for this. I Am A Sword is one of my favourite AT episodes. And this is one of my favourite AT analyses. Object ontology is something that speaks to me a lot as someone who isn't always seen as a person. I was fascinated with Finn Sword even before the show confirmed that he is in fact still Finn in there. This episode confirms and wades deeply into that idea. And your analysis puts it into word so well. You successfully scooped what the writers pooped. It feels good to see other people do that. I'm not the only one getting emotionally invested in objects.

    This reminds me of some stuff I was reading and watching a while ago associating itself with the "speculative realist" movement in philosophy, there was a lot of discussion exploring the train of thought one goes down when you attempt to talk about inanimate man-made objects as if they have autonomy and agency in the world independent of humans, the recurring idea that came up was that objects may acquire their initial life through humans, but then they take on a life of their own as they in turn affect us in feedback and these effects stray from our intentions. Also there was mention of how the world of natural objects that predates humans pre-configures the operational landscape of our lives, and so one could see humanity and sentience as merely an extension of processes which are essentialy shaped by the abstract 'lives' of objects.

    Another interesting moment not mentioned here was when Finn befriends the singing hole in the episode The Music Hole (which I believe occurred plot-wise immediately after the events in I Am A Sword). The hole explains to Finn that because it is just a hole, it has no influence over worldly events and it is restricted to being an outside observer of the world, and so it sings to itself. At the very end of this episode when Finn, Jake, and Lady Rainicorn are awarding the music hole with a folded paper crown, Finn Sword (seemingly uncracked in this final shot, though not sure if that's an error or not) shakes his head. I'm not sure whether Finn Sword here is bobbing his head in time with the music or whether he's disapproving of Finn's awarding the hole with the prize, but I figured you'd find it interesting that there are more moments in the show wherein objectification is a central theme.

  • @knuckle12356
    @knuckle12356 Рік тому +2

    I think there is something to be said for Finn Sword being a passive observer; having no agency. This affects his responses. There is a difference between being used to throwing yourself into battle, being willing to fight with your "brother," and being forced to watch as Finn flips you up into the air.
    Not only did Sword Finn not give implied consent, but actively withdrew his consent. And Finn didn't respect that, having his way with Finn Sword. Throwing the sword body about in any manner that _pleased_ Finn.

    @tutlens 7 років тому +4

    Good lord, Adventure Time is art by itself.
    Two things: The NAME of the episode itself is significant -- Finn self-identifying as a sword.
    And the other thing is how this episode caps off, or is at least a significant development in, Finn's character arc involving how he deals with people, an issue that best illustrated by his breakup with Flame Princess and his interaction with NEPTR, which really started moving when Martin came into the picture and showed this objectification quality at its most extreme finality, and was called out directly in "Don't Look". Even as far back as Season 1 he often seemed to regard people not as individuals to be protected but as a means to an end -- the end of being a hero and doing great deeds. I think his tendency to objectify others may be the single greatest area of development we've seen in Finn so far -- he's even now started doing it to himself.
    As a personal note, the word 'metonymy'. Dude. I can't think of another time a UA-cam video made me have to look up a word. Damn fine job.

    I definitely think Finn saw Finn sword as more than a tool. I don't think Finn was disregarding what Finn sword was saying because he didn't think of him as a person but because he was being cocky and was overly confident he wouldn't drop the sword. I mean he only dropped it eventually because he got stuck in the bridge, not because of his lack of skill. Finn may have seen Finn sword as nagging because he had denied his previous request which was (I think) to keep adventuring rather than going home, or something along those lines. This could have led Finn to ignore his wishes as he probably thought Finn sword was just stopping him from having fun rather than looking out for the best.
    Also when Finn decided to go in alone against bandit princess he felt a sense of pride because he viewed Finn sword as himself and he wanted to avenge him. I doubt if it was any other sword, Finn would've have tried to solo it. It is because of the bond that Finn sword and Finn have is why Finn was so prideful and wanted to be the person to take down Bandit Princess. Plus I don't think Finn saw any risk of harm to Finn sword in the fight, he probably only thought he was the only one at risk.
    So basically what I am trying to say is that Finn did acknowledge Finn sword as more than just an object. I don't believe that Finn was calling him Finn sword because he subconsciously thought of him as just a sword but because he probably didn't think too hard about the syntax of his words. Finn definitely took Finn sword for granted and even if he didn't fully acknowledge Finn sword as a person, he most likely did after Finn sword "died" because he was super depressed about it after, and Finn wasn't this sad when the sword his dad gave to him broke.
    Also I found it weird how Finn was just fine with Finn sword not being around for like 3 episodes but after those episodes he became super depressed about it.

    The part about B-MO being an object when used for video games, sort of contradicts with the early seasons of the show. It's really interesting and apt for the episode; however, I believe the first episode that introduces Lemongrab (Early season 3) has Jake playing on B-MO with the two of them conversing.

    I am shocked you talked about Beemo instead of Neptr. There are a bunch of episodes where Beemo talks while in game mode, so that's kind of inconsistent. Neptr is a way better example of a robot being treated more like an object despite very specifically displaying strong emotions of love and attachment.

    The concept of existing at both a person and a sword at the same time because of time/dimension shenanigans reminds me of Raziel and the Soul Reaver.

    I adored this video. I had never thought about Finn Sword from this perspective, much less still the og Finn. I recently watched a disability review and Finn by oakwyrm and would love to see you do something like that if it’s in your scope and you’d like to. Loved the perspective on Finn Sword using objectivity theory and speech (along w other characters in the show) So cool. Love your videos

    Hey, Uncivilized Elk! I'd like to point out that when Finn Sword speaks to Bandit Princess in the episode he says:
    "I was keeping it in the DL"
    Considering that some of Finn's slang is taken from modern slang (though I have yet to hear someone say DL), its pretty obvious to me that this translates to "down low" meaning that Finn Sword says "I was keeping it in the down low" when replying to Bandit Princess's shock at his sentient nature.
    So basically, Finn Sword being quiet and the show doing clever shots where its nearly ambiguous prior to this episode if he's sentient or Finn's just speaking to himself is not only a deliberate choice, its outright stated in the episode. I'm curious on if the following episodes will exploring why he did this (and hopefully they do it well. Because even though I found season 7 to be stronger than 5 and 6, it had a few issues here and there), but one thing's for sure: This was DEFINITELY intentional.

    also interesting thing between finn and jake is that sometimes jake permit finn to use him as a sword or some other objects. For me it shows that if someone let you 'use' him and he trust you it's nothing wrong with that

    Late late late late laaate but I have a thought I'd like to share Re: the sticker on Finn Sword at the end of the episode. It's very basic and not terribly deep/thematic, but as someone who studies horror to an extent, I want to give the show props for having BMO put that sticker on the sword, as the sticker conceals what's going on in the glass, making it more ominous because we have to imagine what's causing it. A little expression of a character's agency allowed for a natural and very effective trick-o'-the-horror-trade.

    Jake was bored being a brick because he isnt a brick, but maybe Finnsword isn't bored being a sword because he is a sword. Just like.. we might find the life of a worm unfulfilling, but to a worm, being a worm is just the wormiest. Maybe talking just isnt a thing that feels natural to swords until Finnsword was being used for unnatural things to his Lawful Good nature. If I was a magical sword I would want to be swordy and not humany, thats probably the difference between being a holy sword and cursed sword entrapping a tortured spirit. Finnsword was just looking after Finn, gotta sleep, man. You just wouldn't understand until you lived the sword life.

  • @rya3190

    I feel that Sword Fin (yes that name change comes from a bit of realisation) still shared some of the views, as when he got excited when the grass sword sprang up. also, Fin's form seems to have improved, judging by his jousting stance...when he accidentally stabbed Sword Fin.

    Wow! That was super-interesting! I hadn't thought about it that in-depth. Now that I am thinking about it, though, I think the episode title, "I Am a Sword," is really telling. It tells us that Finn Sword does identify as a sword. Maybe that's why he doesn't talk-- he's accepted his fate as a sword, and has decided to live as one. Swords can't talk, so... The topic of the subject/object barrier really interests me when it comes to fiction (and of course, my favorite kind of fiction is cartoons). Because we have direct access to characters' thoughts, feelings, and private moments in a way that we don't with real people, they can be easier to internalize. They actually think and feel through us, so even though they appear to be object, they're actually subject. I think that actually says a lot about our relationships with real people.

    I've just recently finished watching all the Ghost in The Shell movies and the Stand Alone Complex T.V series. I can safely say that there are a lot of connections between Finn Sword being treated as an object and the Tachikoma units trying to discover their own identities not as mobile tanks but as machines with a conscious ( or ghost.)

    Gotta remember one key difference between BMO and Finn Sword when it comes to loosing autonomy when being used as an item, BMO was made for this purpose while Finn Sword wasn't. Finn Sword was Finn, an adventurer whose purpose was to be a hero, BMO has always been BMO, a robot whose purpose is to entertain its user however it can. BMO is seen smiling sometimes when he is about to be used to play games, it is who he is, while Finn Sword frowns when he is being used as a sword, it isn't who he is, he's a person inside who has his own autonomy.
