I adjusted mine and it started bucking on first and second gear shift. I feared the transmission was having trouble but after seeing your video I realized it started after I did the adjustment. Search for a good way to do it and you gave me the answer. I just need to play with it and get the right adjustment. Thank you.

About two months ago my overdrive in my '96 XJ was acting funny. It would cut out while driving highway speeds and my cruise control would stop. I'd have to pull over and stop, take back off, then overdrive and cruise would work again. Little bit later, same thing would happen. I lubed up the button, adjusted it, now all works great. So now, I'll hit the button with some P.B. Blaster every time I do the oil change to keep that from happening again. Great vid and awesome info. Keep on keeping on bro. OlllllllO

@Cherokee Ronnie. Hey Ronnie, thanks for posting the video. I just bought a 1993 Cherokee last week and not that I've been driving it around much but I did notice that during my 30-40 miles I put on it that the shift points were way too high. I paid attention to the rpm's which were shifting at 2,300 to 2,500, so yep it sounded like the trans was really winding out. I made that adjustment this morning & then started it, let it warm up a bit, then off I went for a 6 mile loop that I go on whenever I've just repaired something on my vehicles. And I have to say, Cool Man, the shift points are a lot better. At a normal acceleration, with or without traffic, my Jeep was shifting at 1,800 to 2,100 and when it went into 4th, it averaged 1,600-1,700 rpm's.
Now it's not my 1st jeep Cherokee but since it has been 10 years and taking into consideration it's still new to me, I'm just taking my time with it so I don't fall into any problems from rushing into things. There is not rust on the vehicle at all. Came outta Colorado Springs, Colorado, where it lived since 1993, so being the 3rd owner and it now living in Michigan, automatically lets this Jeep stand out, so I'm glad it's in great condition. Other jeep owners can look at the grille and pretty much guess from what part of the 90's it was made, plus I've gotta get used to the other Jeep Owners who know you gotta wave at any other Jeep on the road. It's a neat experience and glad I subscribed to your channel. Thanks again Ronnie for uploading this video...

How do I adjust it if the plunger doesn’t ratchet back when I step on the throttle? For instance, when I push the plunger back and then I step on the throttle the plunger just stays in place. I have to manually put the plunger back in position.

  • @safetyfirstintexas

If your button won't push down a socket that fits inside the button recess when laid over on its side and a channel lock tool will push that button down.
then while down move the " nose" out of the housing 1/16 of an inch untill the shift quality is where you like it.
    Saves a sore finger.
Just a gentle squeeze is all it takes.

  • @TheDogPa

OK, didn't work right for me...but I did get the problem fixed. Let me explain:
I had the exhaust manifold replaced and after it was shifting real high. I sort of freaked out and thought that back in the day I'd have figured they messed with or unhooked the vacuum modulator. I had no idea what direction to go but a few searches found this and others. That button would not move. Took liquid wrench and a sore finger before it moved. I had to really fight it and it was hard to get the adjuster thingy to move...but it did. I should say mine looked a little different ('95 inline 6). It would not adjust however. I lubed and tried and held the button and moved it...thing was almost seized and there was no auto adjusting going to take place here. I watched this closely, and then manually moved the thingy where it looked like it needed to be. To my amazement...because it just didn't really look like it would do anything...it fixed it. Shifts are back where they belong...HOORAY! #jeep #cherokee #shifting #kickdown

I have a 2004 Wrangler TJ 4.0L. I have the throttle cable and the cruise control cables attached to the throttle body but NO TV (kick down). Now with a lot of time and effort I finally saw a blog saying my Jeep doesn't have one. It uses a computer. And with my engine notorious for lagging or upshifting early, the recommendation is turning off the OD when in town. Also I saw an AD for a device that plugs into the computer for the transmission that eliminates this need. Apparently there's about a three second delay between the computer relaying information to the transmission and the throttle body movement. Hence the lag and delay in downshifting when accelerating.
    What are your thoughts?

I hope you still monitor these comments. 98 Wrangler 4.0L 3 speed automatic. I do not have the bush button like you do and I can't adjust it by simply pressing the gas pedal. Throttle all the way out and it shifts sluggish and doesn't down shift when trying to pass. Adjust it tighter and it shifts fine, downshifts when accelerating to get on the high way but then shifts into third at about 50mph. I swear it was down shifting even on the highway before I had to replace the cable. Am I too tight or not tight enough? Too easy of a thing to mess with to pay someone to do it.

Is it possible to make this adjustment too many times? If so, what are the repercussions of doing that? I've been having issues, for about 6 months now, with my 94 XJ automatic shifting either too quick or too late, very erratic overall. I've replaced the TPS and have done this adjustment probably 20-25 times over the coarse of the last 6 mos. Yesterday, it started to not shift at all on the highway. I would press the gas and the RPMs would go up over 3000, but it would not accelerate and I had to coast it into a gas station. Went out and made the TV cable adjustment and then would crank, but not start. Repeated the adjustment 5-6 times and still wouldn't start. Unplugged the TPS and it started right up. Attempted to drive it the 5 miles home, with the TPS unplugged, but the same issue came up with it not shifting or accelerating. Is this what they call "limp mode"? Anyway, I pull over and plug the TPS back and try to start it and this time it started and mysteriously drove and shifted much better, although still not perfectly. Should I be looking at something in the transmission itself at this point? It's full of fluid and it's the stock AW4 tranny. Does any of this sound related to a neutral safety switch problem at all? Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Mine didn’t either... I lubed it up but still won’t shoot out when I push down on the gas. Does this mean mine is broken? Can you replace these things?

I'm a 2 yrs from 80 woman. I need instructions so why do you talk over half the time? Get organized & get to the point. When I turn on UA-cam for instructions I'd like to see the location & the parts. No time for chit chat.
