Great vid you did. Had the same issue on a 77 70hp 3 cyl with rotten internal harness. You could hear cracking sound from the wires when you touched it. Keep on the good work. Looking forward to see the next episode of your 45 merc overcomming heat problems!👍😎

Gaute Valand ... thank you for watching and I really appreciate your comments. I’m not sure what’s up about the crappy wiring on these Mercs but you think there would be some sort of recall. Anyway, yea this 40 runs like a beast now in my test tank. I just rebuilt the carb on her today and I should be finishing up on the 45 by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Hi brother thanks for the great videos . I have a 1985 40 hp mercury. Would a 1980-85 50 hp mercury lower unit work on my 40 hp or which years are transferable

I don’t believe the 40 hp and 50 hp lower units are interchangeable.

do you think my 40 hp might be having the same issue as your lower unit?

The only way you’ll know is to remove the bearing carrier and inspect the internals. If someone has disassembled it before you they might have installed the pin in backwards. Good luck.

@@LivetofishOutboardRepair I have nothing to loose then , the lower unit is either installed wrong or it's done for huh

@@danieltinoco8569 Well it could also be a worn out ratchet (clutch dog). Sometimes you can just replace it and your back in business.
