I wouldnt say the 6 was muddy, just bass heavy so highs are more recessed. The motion plus is quite bright so in a/b it often makes the other speakers sound muddy. The onyx having a single tweeter of course doesnt help either 😊
@@alanrossreviews Ah, I am a layman of terms. Would you define muddiness in this context as an imbalance favoring lows? That was what I meant by the term I suppose. If so, then, what you are saying is that in your opinion it is muddy but not ALL that muddy? Or does the term muddiness mean something else?
Awesome review. Got the onyx 5 (and the boom) It's funney how the onyx's bass travels to the floor 🙂. I really like both speakers. But the onyx battery time is a joke.
@@ericsantana4050 no marshall plays as deep as the onyx 6 except the woburn 2. Not the kilburn 2, not the stanmore 2, not even the tufton. The woburn 2 is 6 times the price of the onyx 5 and 4 times the price of the onyx 6 in my country.
The Onyx sounds too narrow or boxey. We have many speakers in my office and the Onyx was returned because of that. The Marshall fills up the whole office with its rich bass.
Alan, the Onyx 5 and 6 can pair in stereo. Typical of HK not to tell us how to do it. You just need to long press the Play button after pairing them up normally. If you long press Play again, it will switch channels between speakers and if you long press Play again it will go back to mono. It cycles through like that. Check out the video on my channel for the stereo tutorial and test. The Onyx 5 and 6 also have 2 massive oval passive radiators, one on the front and one on the back. And the Onyx Studio 7 will have 2 tweeters but that sweet deep bass remains to be heard. We will just have to wait for the launch in late April. Lol!

@@alanrossreviews yup, Im sure it has 2 working passive radiators. :) I found out the onyx 5 and 6 could pair in stereo thru a fellow youtuber called Jason and decided to post that vid to help out Onyx owners since 99.9% didnt know it was possible. JBL and HK have so many secret button combinations that its hard to keep up if you dont take the time to check one by one out. Soft reset, hard reset, turning strobe lights on and off, turning off DSP, software version check, controlling echo on certain models, etc... all are not mentioned in the manuals but they definitely do work. I guess thats just how the company is. Now only if the Onyx had an equalizer.......
@@alanrossreviews it only works for the onyx 5 and 6 and can only be paired among themselves. Even the Go Play cant be paired to play in stereo. The Onyx 5 and 6 are like made specially for stereo pairing, they sound so open and way less congested in stereo, yet HK mentions nothin about it. If HK did, they would most probably have sold way more Onyxs. Dumb. LOL!
It’s not stereo but double mono (me and my friends have four studio 5 and a 6 so we could test it well). Only the Onyx Studio 4 had the stereo pairing option (HK connect +, which was just JBL Connect +)

Stupid battery of onyx studio 6. It’s the only one that averts me to buy it. But the bass is so lovely. I really love deep low end bass. Stupid battery again stupid battery. So confusing what to get. Soundcore boom has almost everything. Just the design 🤪 charge 5 hmm.. xb43. Maybe.. it’s hard to choose when u have budget of $200. Maybe I’ll put it aside for a while and go for a bigger one like boombox2? Hmm what do you think Alan? Btw I find your opinions, videos. Very interesting. Super honest and true answers with your thoughts on the speakers you’re reviewing. Keep it up! You have a new sub! 👊🏼
Ive been listening to the hk go+ play. It might be an option, very meaty and open sounding. Just doesnt have the deep low bass of the o6, also not a big battery but twice the capacity of the o6.
Hey Alan, in your previous videos of motion boom we haven't seen any bass adjustment/compression at 80% vs 100% volume. Why do we see it now? Is it because of newer firmware?
I had an issue where my phone was limiting max volume we has been sorted. Only effected a couple of speakers, the boom and the tribit micro. Sorted now. So partly my fault and partly an issue with samsung phones. Also default holds bass more than custom, so a combination of things.
OH - YEAH!!!! (listening with a Subwoofer and good Speakers) The Onyx sounds Bass heavy and the Motion Boom sounds so clear for price. My MB sounds like my 2.1ch System: 40hz Bass and open Vocals (Mids/Highs)

For 200 bucks i really think the Harman kardon Onyx6 is unbeatable... Its such an amazing speaker.. Sony should learn with this speaker, i mean the XB43 is a great speaker but im yet to hear a true deep bass Sony portable speaker and this is the company that advertises "Xtra Bass" and its allways just boomy 90Hz bass, and no power nor dynamic range to get deeper... I aplude HK for puting a true high excursion/power driver on a 200 dlr speaker, even if its just a 12cm one, its great for its size..
I dont have this, but I do have two Onyx 4s. The bass is insane, even if its not plugged in. It puts my Megablast and XB43 to shame. I just received my Motion+, and cant wait to try it out. I dont like that the Onyx 6 looks like a woman's handbag and it still uses Bluetooth 4.2 and AC adaptor to charge. This is more intended for a desk, than being portable. Great comparisons as usual, Alan. Keep it up.
i dont think either the megablast or xb43 do much in low bass but only heard the megablast in a shop. m+ again wont do much in the deep bass like the motion boom. but if the 4 has bass like the 6 then you are covered 😁
@@alanrossreviews Honestly, the Onyx 4 has enough bass to compete with my Amazon Echo Studio. It has a resonating bass, which is great for R & B/Hip Hop tracks.
sir does rave neo play deeper bass than motion boom? like you said motion boom is 40hz and onyx is 30hz.. how much would be rave neo? and which one has a cleaner /tighter/ defined bass amongst these 3?
Exactly, Onyx is a mono speaker, sounds muddy and covered compared to Boom, JBL has moved in the same direction with their mono speakers. Both brands belong to the same company owned by Samsung. Harman Kardon Go+Play was a really nice speaker. But mono speakers are totally uninteresting due to plenty of alternatives. And Boom´s bass is still impressive given that it is smaller, lighter, sounds MUCH clearer and has less power. Rave Neo and Onyx are more comparable when it comes to power and size.
i think the onyx does a good job at providing some serious deep bass but not balanced enough or open enough for me. It is still bloody fun listening to it thump out some tracks though. the onyz 7 going back to stereo might change things. yes boom remains clear pound for pound champ! 😋
The other speaker is 50watts compared to boom 30watts. So I'm not surprised that the bass is little deeper on studio 6. For me motion boom is overall well balanced and even without tweeters the clarity is much better. Let's assume both are the same price and after watching your review I would go for boom. The other speaker cannot be classed as outdoor speaker with a shyte battery life on a that big lumpy thing.
Really matter of taste, boom more balanced but with dynamic instrumentals that o6 will really kick in that low end. Think of instruments below 60 hz. So really talking bigger bass drums.
Harman Kardon have their sound, quite flat but nice bass. I decided to use a Citation One outside last night for a BBQ, got to say, it really impressed us. Paid £50 for it and that was money well spent.
@@alanrossreviewsI think they want Harman branded stuff in the home and JBL outside, simple as that. how clarity looks in motion boom under 40% ? I love how clarity meets low bass, good soundstage, it amazing for ambient/chillbass, good EDM or all rock.
I am now considering selling both of my sony xb41's and getting 2 motion booms. I know the xb41 get loud but the bass drops off! "extra bass" is awful to listen too at low volumes. its muddy and it's just gimmick! soon as that volume goes up all bass is lost! I have also subscribed to your channel the content is awesome, love watching it!
@Adineo The xb43 was a real fail, infact its like they have stepped backwards owning the XB40,41&43 its been a really disappointment with them. I still think the best speaker they made was the XB40 for its time it held its own! yet now we just get rubbish overcharged speakers from them.
is there a low to mid budget portable speaker that will perform well at low volume? the motion boom sounds kinda bad imo, the boom plus is ok, but it's kinda missing something the intended purpose would be some quiet background music at parties, mostly house, techno, psytrance ect. our parties have mellowed out over the years, now the music is more like a mood aspect in the background, what matters more these days is just catching up with each other but some music helps set the mood and makes the moments of silence less noisy....not sure how to put this, but silence is louder than some quiet music
I had the 6 and the boom and auwa exos 3 and motion plus and extreme 3.. I now own 2 w king d9 that came with firmware updated.. the 6 was killer for bass when plugged in but unplugged the sound drops way off... had it not done that id prolky never have bought the w kings but now I'm glad I did cyz these have blown me away.. nit the bass of 6 or even the boom but with lil eq tweaking on my note 20 ultra none of these speakers touch it for overall sound and volume
I owned a studio 5 and loved the bass but got tired of it as well. It created an overexagerated boom to everything being played masking the bass notes. Is the boom like this as well? Or is their definition to the bass?
I had the denon 250bt but sold it , it has good audio quality but doesn't have much bass . Could you recommend which speaker is better than Denon 250bt , I prefer small speaker
@@nicholaschanvn the aomais go mini is 25 watts but it is like a budget speaker I'll lyk what I think of it later what kind of music u gonna be listening to on it
Damn, I just purchased the studio 6 over the motion boom 3 hours ago. I did pay $90 US dollars more for the Harman Kardon but I like deep bass. I originally purchased 2 W-King D9's but returned both because I didn't feel comfortable paying that much money for electronics from a company that doesn't have a website. I also had issues linking the two together and when I called Amazon support they recommended that I return them. I didn't know about the small battery on the Harman Kardon until right now but I see what you are talking about when you said you don't think HK wants it to be a mobile speaker. The Soundcore, W-King, and JBL's all have large batteries because they are viewed as an outdoor party speaker and they do have the ability to charge external devices but that's not an issue for me because I have so many power banks around the house. The biggest thing on my wish list was a JBL Boombox but $400 US dollars is out of my price range. Plus you can always find Harman Kardon certified refurbished on websites like Woot or Ebay. Thanks for the solid review so now I'm not second guessing my purchase.
Wow, I need the H/K Onyx! In black I might add. Guess I'll have to bring a powerbank to the beach as well. (I like the Soundcore but it looks like a $29,- toy.)
@@fahrradbang69 Yes, noticed that :-) I do have a powerbank with 230V outlet but It's impractical to bring that and the Onyx powerbrick. The Onyx does last a full day on easy listening volume but it's not the choice for an all night beach party. Lucky me, my all night outdoor parties are rare these days :-)
The Onyx 6 use cases seem to be something that you'd take from the bedroom to the shower, or perhaps near the hot tub in a detached home. There is no way something with that much low end bass would be suitable for a flat / condominium. The outdoor aspect to me for the Onyx 6 doesn't make sense since it's mostly flat in the midrange spectrum. I was looking for a speaker to use at the beach and the my initial choice was the Onyx 6, simply because of the amazing sound and design. After I learned of the realistic 90 minute battery life, it's almost embarrassing to bring that to the beach, especially when a friend has to charge their phone. Therefore I'll forgo that low end bass for the Anker Soundcore Motion Boom. Thank you for your review.

Hi Alan - Boombox fun but was not a keeper . It was like a tank ha ha . I had the first Onyx ...... it was great fun , but vocals did not pop . So hopefully new one will address that especially with the two tweeters layout . I see Harman has gone back to the steel bar design of the original. It still does not fold for easy transportation . A criticism on the original design. I have ordered the new Onyx too as I’m speaker- less at moment. I sent my Beolit 20 back too 🤣 and sold on my two A1’s 2nd Gen . I await the Onyx - They say it might be delayed . Keep good ..... we need music for the summer days ahead . 🎶🎵🕺🏻 C

How are the vocals ? Also Currys have the soundcore neo I was tempted to try with your EQ settings . 🥸 as I do love deep base but I also like vocals to pop as well . The reason I sent the Beolit 20 back as it seem to have more upper mid base punch...... I love the deep lower base , but upper bunch gets in my ‘older’ ears nerves ha ha 👍

But the onyx battery time is a joke.
yeah they clearly dont think of this as a portable speaker.
I just got the onyx 6 yesterday thanks to you. I love it
yup, shame about the battery but still hard to beat for some deep bass.
Yes..the battery is little, I am a deep bass fanboy. I get stoned alot.
Os6(and 5) is a low bass pound for pound champ. Has always been. 120mm driver - hard to compete with.
ah! new category then, bass pound for pound champ....but still leaves the boom overall champ i think. 🤗
If so, check out Marshall speakers. Great bass. Better than Onyx.
The Tuffton, that is
Fucken amazing to see motion boom 30 fucken watts beating the shit out of 40, 50, 60, 70 watts speakers !!!! Unfucken believable!!!
its a fucken miracle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏
@@alanrossreviews 😂
Lol!
i watched some teardowns and could see two passive radiators but every article i read said one passive radiator so i figured was one a dummy? so there is front and back radiators for sure? thanks for the headsup on stereo, didnt see that anywhere, how did you find out?
ua-cam.com/video/pyjw4LVTIIY/v-deo.html
cheers!
@@alanrossreviews yup, Im sure it has 2 working passive radiators. :)
I found out the onyx 5 and 6 could pair in stereo thru a fellow youtuber called Jason and decided to post that vid to help out Onyx owners since 99.9% didnt know it was possible.
Now only if the Onyx had an equalizer.......
can the 6 pair with any jbl speakers like other models?
Anker Soundcore Motion Boom= long time listening--->getting tired ears
Harman Kardon onyx 6= Long time listening--->wonderful and enjoyable for the ears
Waiting for my 2x Onyx 6 :-)

Do you still think the motion + is a bit better and more clear than the motion boom or now you've come to prefer it over the motion +?
yes i now prefer the motion boom, once you eq it to your liking.
@@alanrossreviews Thanks.
Hi Alan I'm about to buy my own anker speaker myself. Which between the plus and boom would you recommend more? which has better audio quality?
plus is a little classier but i cant live without the bass of the boom.
I prefer the bass of motion boom . And the audio quality of denon 250bt
I used to smuggle steering wheels in my purse. On every job I had two or three guys carrying Onyx speakers as decoys. Never got caught.
i feel like im taking confession 😝😝
If they can add a tweeter or just add clarity to the tuning of the Onyx Studio and fix the terrible battery.... it would be a BEAST of a speaker!
erm, onyx 7?
@@alanrossreviews it was an improvement but not quite it... still terrible battery life
Stupid battery of onyx studio 6.
@@alanrossreviews i’ll take note of this. Thanks Alan!
I have the onxy studio 5 and I use Spotify so I have my eq setup and I push the mids and high and the speakers sounds amazing
hifi heaven 😋😋
Just bought an os6. Bass is lovely lovely. I wonder if theres any worthy upgrade to it
well you can get a second for stereo... 👍
WOW, that HK sounds good!, cheaper than most of the JBL's.
OH - YEAH!!!! (listening with a Subwoofer and good Speakers)
The Onyx sounds Bass heavy and the Motion Boom sounds so clear for price.
My MB sounds like my 2.1ch System: 40hz Bass and open Vocals (Mids/Highs)
yup the onyx is not balanced at all but f&*k me that bass sounds nice! 🤪

Soundcode Motion Boom sounds much better to my ear at all volume levels. The bass sounds more distinct and less muddied.
you need to listen on something that can play past 30hz without rolloff.
@@jpmavichana I love my onyx 4, just ordered a motion boom for the portability though. Hope youre still enjoying your tunes
Nice review motion boom much clearer and harman kardon has a deep bass love the bass😅 also JBL//is harman Company 👍👍👍
Yup, bro and sis with different personalities 😝
sir does rave neo play deeper bass than motion boom? like you said motion boom is 40hz and onyx is 30hz.. how much would be rave neo? and which one has a cleaner /tighter/ defined bass amongst these 3?
they are about the same but neo sounds bigger.
Love your reviews mate "..I have no idea why" 😂
I admire your honesty, 😁😁
Wow it's the Harmon Kardon Studio 6 for me you can't lose with either speaker 💥👍🏾
Its a buyers market 😊
The other speaker is 50watts compared to boom 30watts. So I'm not surprised that the bass is little deeper on studio 6. For me motion boom is overall well balanced and even without tweeters the clarity is much better. Let's assume both are the same price and after watching your review I would go for boom. The other speaker cannot be classed as outdoor speaker with a shyte battery life on a that big lumpy thing.
O6 is more than a little deeper, its whole different level deep but in an unbalanced way.
Onyx are actually 30W on battery
between the HK onyx studio 4 and the HK onyx Studio 6 which one would you recommend if the difference is 50 dollars between one and the other
i like the o6 but havent heard the o4
Motion Boom is so impressive for the price.
Sure is 😝
for indoor use...which one would work better? instrumental music mostly.
Really matter of taste, boom more balanced but with dynamic instrumentals that o6 will really kick in that low end. Think of instruments below 60 hz. So really talking bigger bass drums.
@@alanrossreviews thank you :-)

Harman Kardon have their sound, quite flat but nice bass. I decided to use a Citation One outside last night for a BBQ, got to say, it really impressed us. Paid £50 for it and that was money well spent.
yup they have a certain signature sound just wish they would get real their batteries
@@alanrossreviews It's strange because JBL have got very real with the batteries 😖
my theory is they do this to protect the jbl side of things
@@alanrossreviewsI think they want Harman branded stuff in the home and JBL outside, simple as that. Really enjoy your videos Alan, I'm a recent subscriber and I enjoy portable speakers. Sick of others comparing portable speakers to hifi equipment, really gets on my nerves!
Even with headphones onyx 6 rattle your head....i have the 5 but it is basically the same in the bass dept

Great review again...... Heard it on the rave neo...... Could make out the differences clearly
Rave Neo or motion boom for the bass?
just so different, they can both dig deep. a pair of rave neos is something to think about for the stereo.

I mean I like the Onyx but that sound stage on Motion Boom with that stereo effect feels much much fuller than the Onyx. It almost feels like the Onyx have dropped half of the track in the name of bass. I’m getting a Motion Boom (Select Pro since we don’t get Motion Boom and both are almost the same)
no they are not the same, different drivers! 😱
Select Pro is muddy

how clarity looks in motion boom under 40% ? I love how clarity meets low bass, good soundstage, it amazing for ambient/chillbass, good EDM or all rock.
Clarity goes up with volume so not the best at 40%
@@alanrossreviews so motion plus will be better ?
sorry i thought you said the plus, at lower volumes i think the boom is a little better.

Two booms after the xb41 will feel like heaven 😁😁 tx for the sub 👍
@Adineo The xb43 was a real fail, infact its like they have stepped backwards owning the XB40,41&43 its been a really disappointment with them. I still think the best speaker they made was the XB40 for its time it held its own! yet now we just get rubbish overcharged speakers from them.
In my country we doesn`t have the Anker Soundcore Motion Boom, but I can get the Onyx 5 for 180$ and Onyx 6 for 240$. Whitch one is the best choice?
I never had the o5 sorry.

Left speaker rattling ? Mine is right and it seems to be on the right speaker for a lot of persons

Bought a Boom today….really nice.
Welcome to the boom club 💪💪
is there a low to mid budget portable speaker that will perform well at low volume?
the motion boom sounds kinda bad imo, the boom plus is ok, but it's kinda missing something
the intended purpose would be some quiet background music at parties, mostly house, techno, psytrance ect.
our parties have mellowed out over the years, now the music is more like a mood aspect in the background, what matters more these days is just catching up with each other
but some music helps set the mood and makes the moments of silence less noisy....not sure how to put this, but silence is louder than some quiet music

Soundcore needs a UA-camr reviewer coupon code for their viewers 😸 I hate paying full price
Theres always ebay i guess.
Thanks for the solid review so now I'm not second guessing my purchase.
if soundcore ever do a jbl boombox type it will be half the price and sell like hot cakes 😁

@@fahrradbang69 Yes, noticed that :-) I do have a powerbank with 230V outlet but It's impractical to bring that and the Onyx powerbrick. The Onyx does last a full day on easy listening volume but it's not the choice for an all night beach party. Lucky me, my all night outdoor parties are rare these days :-)
friend, how long does the battery last for the onyx studio 6 at medium volume approx
Has your motion boom EQ settings been posted yet?
I have it on my Instagram but im still not settled on a final one yet.
Harman kardon amazing bass
Yup 🤗
Thank you for your review.
no usb sharing means you cant even power via a powerbank at the beach. btw the o7 isnt even waterproof.
