To me, she's the best Lucia until today. No one has surpassed this yet.
She's a legendary artist. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!
Best singing and acting in the Mad scene ever!
and Lakme
I liked Netrebko in this but Natalie is sensational and I love Joseph Calleja. This production is my absolute favourite and I adore this aria; Natalie said she changed each night and went up to different people in the chorus to see how they reacted. It gave it such a unique feeling, so spontaneous. She just rolls right down those stairs!
She is so fragile and all these wonderful notes float through the auditorium but my favourite is when she is accompanied by glass harmonica not flute. Donizetti composed it with that haunting cadenza of the instrument. It adds to the madness, like an otherworldly sound.
Natalie Dessay was supreme. This is perfection. What a terrible pity she doesn't sing anymore.
But still the most perfect Lucia! What do you think about this? Hmm?
@@MrAndromaque I really Love this play and this production. The relocation of the story in 19th Century is exactly right. The victorian atmosphere is so gloomy and severe; it's in line with the tragedy of madness scene. The bridal dress with blood stains, the downstairs, the guests' confusion and wonder...all of this is played very well and the viewer is nailed to the scene. Natalie Dessay with her beautiful voice shows every color of the character's emotions. Her voice is really suitable to this role: especially in Spargi d'amaro pianto she gives life to Lucia because she can really sing every note. As you wrote in your last comment, Natalie Dessay is one of the most perfect Lucia...like Anna Moffo and Luciana Serra have been. I really miss Natalie Dessay.
@@desperatehell Does anyone know if there is the full opera anywhere on the internet? I can only find clips and have no idea what order they go in (very very new to opera here!)
I watched this transmitted live to a movie theatre at the time ten years ago, and it was a spellbinding performance. Miss Dessay is a very great singer and actress , she managed to make a very difficult role credible and believable (I saw her on a couple of other nights from the Met, she was equally great on those, especially in La Traviata).
I agree it's a loss that she's retired from opera, but with her passionate approach to music she would have felt she could burn out if she didn't switch to another genre in time (she now sings jazz and French chansons), and during a quarter of a century she gave more than anyone could ask for as an opera singer. :)
@@louise_rose thank you for your comment! I didn't know that Natalie Dessay now sings jazz and french chansons. I agree with you: it's not easy to sing Lucia and make credible this role. Many soprano sang this role in a terribile way, wasteing the mad scene because they did not reach the highest pitch or because they played something wrong that was not Lucia. I Remember a spanish production with a teddy bear on mad scene. This is something that brings the singer far away from the role of Lucia. Madness is not close to childhood, indeed.
The best acting in opera I've ever seen... Brava!!!
I agree
Mesmerising 😢🎉
She is utterly mesmerizing. Her performance here was nothing short of magical.
Thanks for posting this. Simply the best - matchless voice & passion - she even looks crazy.
I love Miss Dessay's performance enough that I can hardly imagine that any other soprano could be a better Lucia.
I wholeheartedly agree with you, I haven't met the better Lucia than Miss Dessay yet!
@@daniiltydynian5888Naturally, I want Miss Dessay to do what's best for her. But I'll miss her performances because she traded opera for the theater. Sadly, there's no DVD where she portrays Lucia. Although I love Diana Danrau's work, I don't care much for how she plays Lucia. Sutherland sang superbly. In my opinion, she sang much better than she acted. Miss Dessay excelled at singing and acting.
Dame Joan not only revised this role in the 20th century, but reigns supreme as the best Lucia to this day.
@@shannonlewis8906 Maybe, but I think she sings much better than she acts. In fact, Dessay seemed to agree with me when Charlie Rose interviewed her.
@@shannonlewis8906She's a wonderful Olympia, too, but I prefer Dessay. While Charlie Rose interviewed her, she said that she didn't recognize herself in a video where she sang Lucia. Though that frightens me, it may mean that she just knows how to "be someone else." By the way, she, my favorite soprano, retired from opera partly because she prefer acting in the theater.
so expressive , so lonely ,so lovely , so encredble Nataly Dessey
I saw this in Met and remember. I couldn’t help crying too.
she was supernatural at times...
The actinggggggg😍😍😍😍😍🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
such a phenomenal performance, the sound levels and playing are all so good!
this show is hard to beat! Dessay she's perfect! In 2020 too!!!! 🎼🎭💕👏🙏☝❤
And yet inva mula's version is still the best.
Beautiful flute playing also, it would be nice to acknowledge the player by name here for their important solo contribution along with the singers.
Yes, I am a flute player and this is gorgeous. I believe it is the Icelandic flutist Stefan Ragnar Hoskuldsson, who was principal flute at the Met in 2011.
@@orfadin I had also heard that it was Paul Edmund Davies, then Principal of the LSO, but whoever it is, it’s divine playing!
Fantástica !!bravissima!!
Jesu Christo! What a performance!!!!!!!
Absolutly amaising! What a performance! 👋👋👋👋👋👋She is extraordinary! ❤️👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
Stupenda! Cesellata ogni singola nota e ogni singola parola.
Non recita, soffre davvero.
What a gorgeous opera this is. And this particular performance is simply stunning.
I've watched/listened to other recordings/performances of this: I think this may be Dessay at her best!
2020 Covid-19 quarantine time. I just watched the Met's free streaming of an encore performance of Lucia, starring Anna Netrebko. I have to say I was really disappointed in it! This opera is one of my all time favourites, and I just HAD to come and see a better performer do the role justice!
I saw Natalie Dessay play Marie in "La Fille du Regiment" and was really impressed with her energy levels and acting skills. I wanted to see if she ever did Lucia and I have to say I am grateful that she did. I'm sad to hear she left Opera, but I'm sure glad that she performed at all
Oh, and I should add: Огромное спасибо за видео, Даниил! :D
I definitely agree with you! I saw that Met planned to stream "Lucia di Lammermoor" with Netrebko yesterday, and I refused to watch it. It's worth noticing I don't like Netrebko's performances in the last few years at all. On the other hand, from my perspective, Miss Dessay was the best Lucia, she really felt her, her feelings and emotions (just like Ludovic Tezier is the best Edgardo, at least I feel in this way)!
I liked Netrebko's one as well, but I must say I just love opera. I totally agree with you about La Fille Du Regiment, I fell in love with Natalie there! And yes, I have also been devouring the Metropolitan free streamings :-)
Saw her perform this at the Met. It was very special. I was mesmerized by her performance 🎭
I saw her at the Met 15 years ago 😮 and she was AMAZING 😻
This just leaving me speechless ❤
I heard the broadcast on BBC Radio 3, & I believe that Dessay was brought in to replace Anna Netrebko.....this an acting tour de force, & really quite Heart rending & beautiful! 💔
I listen to all the 'mad scenes' available to me, & I have to say that the most moving are all by Maria Callas -- something spookily wondrous about someone reaching out to me from the past & seeping under my skin -- her own pain manifest with the beauty of shot silk; now you see it, now you don't;
on the Berlin/Karajan recording, it is possible to envisage Lucia-- totally broken by the madness of HER world -- herself, a spectral figure moving in a single spotlight on a darkened stage....bravissima!
Jussi Bjorling, my favorite singer, died a year before my birth. Though I can't say he seeped into my skin, I hope to meet him in Heaven where I would rave about his singing. Someone, probably Solti, told him that he was a lousy actor. Even if Bjorling was one, I think he singing more than makes up for that. I admire him and Dessay enough that I wish I could befriend them. I feel the same way about Patricia Racette because of how thoroughly she "becomes" Cio cio San in Madama Butterfly. No movie star has ever affected me that way. Only oper singers have.
Netrebko and Kallas are just good vocalists, but Dassay is genious vocalist and actress too.
Can't imagine the one, who could replace her someday.
She's brilliant, the best of all times.
Very colorful voice. Sounding like more than a singer singing the aria. Symbol of new age and paradigm.
Dessay
Magnificent bravo
WOW... das ist wirklich BEEINDRUCKEND! Welch eine Sangesleistung... einfach klasse!

Aaaah! nemici.
Un gelo me serpeggia nel sen!
Trema ogni fibra!

Exceptional
i absolutely love Natalie and i adore this version but i still think inva mula's version is still my favorite
The one true genius. Brilliant. Bravo.
The very performance that got me interested in Bel Canto. It's the first time I have ever seen anyone act or attempt to act in an opera.

There was this woman called Maria Callas who was quite skilled at acting and singing . She revolutionized Bel Canto and was quite a celebrated and exceptional Lucia . I am sure Dessay put her recordings on with the blender !
Bellísimo que talento tan hermoso👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️
Amazing and unforgettable! Brava!!

I wish it was released commercially.
I once had the opportunity to buy this on dvd at HMV in the Arndale Centre in Manchester, England and I passed it up?! I have been kicking myself ever since because shortly after I passed it up it became unavailable?! 😢😢😢

O DOCE SOM
Longo, branco, ensanguentado, vislumbrando a visagem
Do elenco, enfatiza: Ohimè, sorge il tremendo fantasma
e ne separa! Lucia relembra os encontros alvissareiros
Com o amado, junto a uma fonte. Surge o ectoplasma
Comprovando a existência de almas errantes. A amável
Lembrança do passado e as intrigas que de lá persistem.
O amor vivenciado na fonte e a perseguição implacável.
A Covid - 19 traz a reflexão do viver por nós apresentado

She is Lucia. Sure there may be sopranos with better technique (Sutherland/Callas) BUT none has brought the character to life more than Natalie. The perfect balance of pain, desperation, hopefulness, and denial.
I’ve seen at least twenty Lucias including the greats, but when I’m asked by my peers why I love opera I always direct them to this performance.
I wish Natalie will go back to opera. Even not as lead, her presence alone is enough.
Is there anyway to watch the whole production? Not the DVD recorded by Anna Netrebko.
Yep. of course! Here is the secret link, enjoy:)

Too bel canto and not crazy enough for me 😂
Study Opera please
Waaahnsinn
FYI this is also played out in the movie The Fifth Element before the Diva is killed ua-cam.com/video/XnTE2h0ZY74/v-deo.html
The Fifth Element brought me here...

Wheres the flute or glass harmonica? Something is wrong here. She did not even get applauded after the duet with the "flute". That duet with no flute (or glass harmonica) loses every sense. Did the lead flute player play hookie that day? Boooo to the producer.
0:42
@@esterbruno8604 starting at 10:30 at the peak of madness, there should be a duet of the coloratura with the flute (or glass harmonica), and the flute is nowhere to be seen (or heard rather).
@@lifeisgood3087 But the rest is superlative
@@esterbruno8604 well in the million years I have been a super mega fan of opera, and not lying here, but have seen every production of Lucia on UA-cam and other platforms, plus performances I have attended live, this is the first time ever the flute or glass harmonica is not used in the duet. This became a non duet.
Maybe it was canceled not to spoil vocals? 😉
Sceniquement très bien ,belle interprétation dramatique. Vocalement j'aime moins !
This production was difficult to watch. On one level it was upsetting, raw and rather sleazy. On another level it was campy somewhat embarrassing and at times it just felt annoying. I think that the subject matter is so very heavy that going for raw can make the whole affair ugly. The music is so romantic and ethereal and a swoon to heaven that when all of the gimmicks are over done and inserted it is just thrown away. Des say is a very girlish juicy violin smooth coloratura. There is a slightness to her entire sound and it runs glassy in the upper register. Often she has energy in the voice yet there is not much covering or beef. With Netrebko no one gets too much of that. Des say worked very hard this night and it was a clean performance but no one can deny that the acting took most of her energy up and many phrases were short and rushed.

Le falta algo, comparado con lisette oropeza...
Queee??????
Vulgar
So she can hit the notes... and she is thin... however, when "acting" and looks over-ride the voice, it is no longer opera, it is Broadway, or musical theater. It is not Opera. Opera is HOW ONE SINGS not what.
Oh my word. She’s screaming. Dame Joan SANG this role in her 60’s and hit the Eb’s... AND her vibrato was never this wide. This is where we are today. It’s very sad.
Oh just shut it.
@@janm.c.munich3513 no.. don’t think I will.
@@janm.c.munich3513 I agree, these people complain about everything. Dame Joan is long gone as well as Callas. They just want to kill opera/classical music off so that it only exists on CDS.
It'll be a dead art form.
@@nicholasprakash3411 not at all... my point is we need singers today that are worthy of the praise and accolades and money they’re getting. I was using Joan as an example. I’m all for opera living on and flourishing.. but for a lot of singers, it’s just sad.
@@shannonlewis8906 The problem is that not every singer is Joan, Maria, or Luciano. If all you want is superstars, then your cutting people out. Each singer has to build their repertoire and add pieces to it. Nobody starts out singing/performing a piece perfectly the first time.
And this is an excellent performance from a colorutura expert, which is as hard as singing Wagner.
Dessay was always a bit over the top for me with her portrayals! Too much hammy, scenery chewing grand standing as an actor when she really was a very enchanting and alluring singer who could have used her voice and inherent theatrical instincts and saved the theatrics and been just as effective. She never learned that less could be more! Why all this blood all over Lucia in every production these days ? I know she stabs Arturo many times but really a little subtlety please! Sutherland started it and it has escalated over time! The soprano does not need to be drenched in fake blood for the Mad scene to work! The music sets the scene and the actor/singer should convey the drama not a blood drenched costume ! Dessay was a very good coloratura and vocally an exciting singer, just too extreme sometimes as an Actor at least for me !
Jane Zhang sings this much better without that terrible ugly over excessive vibrato this singer has.
