  • It's FINALLY happened!! After twiddling our thumbs for weeks on end we have mad a start on silaging our herbal leys. Not only that but our 6410 is fixed and finally on the rake and we have to break out 2 wrappers to get finished off.
    This one is a cracker, I hope you enjoy it.

    Cracking video mate! Great to see the 6410 still ruling the roost. Best tractor ever made!

      Thanks mate. It’s a great simple tractor. We’d be lost without it.

      Sure is, and remember that the 6410 has LED lights fitted too. Way better than the standard ones 👍

    If the two seed rates are producing similar tonnage. It will be interesting to see if one out performs, or is more resilient, than the other over time.

      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому

      100%. I would have thought there would have been slightly more on the double rate field but surprisingly not. Time will tell.

    If you had a fusion you could have stayed in on Saturday night James, we finished baling straw last Saturday before the rain Sunday, nice to get it done might do some more silage if we could just have some sun👍

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому +1

      Yeh too right. My only concern would be the weight in this scenario. Glad you got your straw bales, it’s been a hell of a long campaign this year with the weather 🙈

    • @richardmatthews3304
      @richardmatthews3304 4 місяці тому

      @@baldysfarm the weight would be fine their on big tyres and I'm guessing it's reasonable flat where you are but cameras never give a true picture, yes long season for sure, did you count the bale difference on the thick seeds and thinner seeds. Be interesting to see how the two patches compare as time goes on, looks some nice stuff, be interesting to see the analysis of the different leys you v baled this year, 👍

    I use clouds for my gps mowing. Look out your back window at a cloud straight behind you, then turn into a new block and aim for it again.

    Hi James, lucky to be silaging in October. So how many did you do in the hour with Tanco?

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому

      Still about 80 but tbh I wasn’t pushing it mega hard. Sped up some of the settings and then cruised along. Probably could have done 90 if I’d really pushed her.

    Will you be getting it analysed?

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes, once we get to housing we will have all silage analysed in order to allocate it correctly.

    Im not a farmer but i used to silage and hay contracting lad u may seriously have a think about pitting all that grass !

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому +1

      Trouble is our pits on its last legs and it would be a huge investment to put a new one in and we use mowing as a management tool, so I can’t see a contractor wanting to keep coming for 8 acres here and 10 acres there all summer 🙈

    • @markandrews6712
      @markandrews6712 3 місяці тому +1

      Wouldn’t the savings on the baling and wrapping soon pay for updating the pit? You could still bale the small areas needed for grass management yourself.

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  3 місяці тому

      @@markandrews6712not if you consider the economic costs of the machinery needed to feed clamp silage no. Bales seem expensive to make (which in comparison to clamp it is) but cheap as chips to feed. Realistically clamp is no cheaper than bales.

    What date was this silage made?

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому

      5th October it was baled.

  • @thomasevans5491
    @thomasevans5491 4 місяці тому +1

    How many acres of silage do you make for 100 odd cows you seem to silaging all summer

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому

      We use mowing as a management tool so we are often silaging lower cover but we also have about 400 head of stock on farm at any one point with the finishing stock too. Winter feed budget dictates about 1600 silage bales and 400 hay to make it through the winter safely.

    • @thomasevans5491
      @thomasevans5491 3 місяці тому

      @baldysfarm so about 800,000 tonnes of fresh weight silage I'm guessing at that, I'm only asking as we are running roughly the same sort of number of cows 160 acres pit silage 10 acres of wholecrop and similar in maize silage plus 25 acre of round bales for sheep and 30 acres of the pit silage would be for sheep, got cows on restrictive ration once weaned 20kg silage 2kg straw nothing better than going in the evening seen all cows lying down in cubicles chewing cud

  • @andrewcamp2201
    @andrewcamp2201 4 місяці тому +2

    Wean your calves on the rest of you new seeds they will fly on it

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому +1

      It’s tempting but we have a burst water pipe to the fields that need fixing over winter so can’t get water there atm 🤦🏼‍♂️

  • @adamholmes6493
    @adamholmes6493 4 місяці тому

    Why don't you make clamp silage rather than making all them bales ?????

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm  4 місяці тому +1

      Tbh, we would need a new clamp which would be a huge investment and then we would also have to rely on a contractor with heavy kit and trailers which I’d rather not do. Hoping to move to keep cattle out longer in general so shouldn’t need to make as much moving forward, even with higher cattle numbers.
