  • Made some phone calls to some Digital Microscope companies and spoke to an engineer who started the first USA made digital scope. The links for the ones I purchased are below.

      I will do more on the Tomlov this week I got some great pictures and it has a feature that’s really great for knife sharpening that I haven’t seen on any other digital microscopes

    4:49 Following the link in your description for the arm you link that holds the Tomlov shows something completely different than what you have. It shows just two lights.

      Scroll down. The arm is shown but it is out of stock as of 28 Jan 2023.

    I consider microscopes essential to understanding how best to sharpen a given knife for the end user. A dulled cutting edge tells you a lot about how the knife is used & the knife steel. With experience, knife blade apex angle ( cutting edge angle) can be optimized instead set to a standard. Each user is unique & each blade/steel is unique, driving my desire to select various apex angles for durability. I find some blades have hard/brittle spots which chip out quickly while 98-99% of the blade remains relatively sharp. How do you approach these circumstances ?

      I agree If you want your sharpening to be next level great get and use a micro scope. I look at every blade under the scope. I find it helps me make the best final adjustments to make the edge perfect. As I am sure you know you can have what feels sharp cuts paper well but it may still have a tiny bit of old edge still presents that you wouldn’t know is there without a scope but when you remove that you now have essentially a brand new edge and new knife . The new scope from Tomlov I got yesterday is amazing such and incredible image but even an inexpensive one will help any sharpener. I don’t spend a lot of time examining knives before I sharpen them but mostly when I am just about done to be sure it’s completely apexed. I probably should do more of that I will do it on repeat customers who I have sharpened before but I already know my edge retention is good from my professional chefs who I see more often then my Residental clients.

    Thanks so much for this video. I was going to get a £89 microscope, but after seeing this, and on the back of your advice, I've decided to go for the Tomlov DM201 (is this the model of yours?) I clicked on your link, but it took me to the US Amazon site, and I live in the UK. I'm slightly confused however as some people (like yourself) have been saying it's 25mp while others are advertising it as 16mp, either way, I would imagine to the naked eye the difference is negligible.

      They come out with updated models a lot but mine is the 201 but I would not be surprised if what you may have in the UK may be a little different. I recently had some offers to review some new ones but have not accepted because for what I do they need to have certain features and the two offers didn't have what's important for knife sharpening IMO one being adjustable LED inside the lens and the ability to focus right up against the bottom of the scope.

    What is the focal length of the microscope woth the screen? Can you work under it with a ball vice and gravers or does it need to be to close to the object for magnification.

    In video at 4:30 is that image showing the burr ? I'm still trying to figure out how to identify the burr with a digital microscope. thanks!

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  Рік тому

      Yes the shiny edge is the burr at 4:30 but the reason you see all that fuz is because that looks to me like I did not wipe off the blade after honing so you will see stuff left behind and fibers that are caught in the burr at 6:40 is a much better view what a burr looks like on a knife that's been used. If it's properly sharpened the edge will be much more perfect and straight. Go to 2:06 on this video to see what a sharpened edge looks like. ua-cam.com/video/X6rn26lGyBc/v-deo.html
