      It's clearly a fantasy scene. And all fantasy races are basically humans in a slightly different shape. It's not like "fantasy" means making up something actually creative.

    After the hero has already taken out two dozen minions with his fists or melee weapon of choice, don't ever have the remaining bad guys realize their strategy of rushing at him one-by-one isn't working or that they should maybe just run away. That would cause the fight to end too early and you will have to fill up time with plot and character development.

      This doesn't apply to most fights, but here is a little piece of knowledge:
      Usually in action scenes where the hero is fighting the bad guys with a sword, no armor, just modern times, you always see the bad guys going one on one or two on one, instead of doing a group attack. The problem with a group attack though is that a quick and fast swing up and around your body can easily cut and kill anyone around you, even if you are blocking, the coordination you would need with your teammates would be great, and exceedingly it would come that you lost more than you bargained for; trying to kill one man. So whenever you see these action scenes, they do have some truth to them!

      Yep. It's not like a bullet or blade to the axillary or subclavian artery can kill someone dead in under a minute or anything. Or that shoulders are actually pretty complicated pieces of machinery and pieces of metal intruding (or severe blunt force trauma) could leave a person severely crippled for life.

      Which I never really understood. Being hit in the shoulder, while you have a higher chance of survival than in the torso or head, would hurt like absolute hell and would disable any use of that shoulder or arm. You also would require immediate help, especially if hit in a major artery so you don't bleed out. You wouldn't be up kicking the villain's ass 5 minutes later.

      Usually, Shoulders are the only thing that don't matter at all. Well, unless you're watching Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, in which case, expecially around part 3, fights are always destined to turn into massive hyper-violent bloodbaths where the heroes can keep fighting and saying snappy one-liners even while getting every tendon in their body completely destroyed. But don't worry, they'll be right back in peak fighting shape next episode with no repercussions at all!
      ... You know, until someone just dies.... That tends to happen a lot despite how otherwise invulnerable our protagonists are. And it's great XD

    Legitimate writing advice on action scenes, or at least something I've started doing that worked for me: if you can definitely see the scene in your head but you can't figure out how to put it into words, try storyboarding it out. Draw some stick figure doodles of the scene you have in mind, write descriptions of the doodles you've drawn, then add dialogue and embellish with extra detail as needed until you think people will see what you want them to visualize.

      I think it has to do with how relatable characters immerse the audience in an unrelatable world. Even as a child I always winced when I heard "let's kick their butt." If charactera seem weird, and your world is already weird, there's nothing to latch onto. And a character saying a stupid fake swear can do that for a second.

    You forgot to have the hero get the villain at his mercy, at which point the villain will inexplicably try to goad the hero into killing him (for some bizarre reason) and the hero will refuse because "That would make me like you" or some such nonsense. Extra points if the villain then dies to something else like falling rocks or a vengeful henchman.

    • @adruvail
      @adruvail 3 роки тому +15

      The way I see it, there are several important components to this situation. A: The motivations of the villain. Why does the villain want to die right now? Why does he want the hero to be the one to kill him? B: What is the hero's character like? Has he killed people before now? What were his reactions to that? If he has killed before, what makes this particular situation different? Why should the hero refuse to kill the villain here? C: Will the reader understand why these characters are acting in this way? Is it something that will fit with the behavior of these characters up to this point?
      I think if these components are handled in a coherent, non-contradictory way, the trope has been handled properly.

    A few other points when addressing combat scenes.
    1. As combat progresses, the character must always be at 100% capability no matter how injured they appear because if the tension wears down, the viewers will totally be bored instead of being somewhat grounded in realism and opening up the concept of characters modifying their tactics addressing present damage or signifying the desperation of both sides to destroy each other.
    2. Speaking of injuries, the only visible injuries either side should take should appear entirely superficial with small gashes on their exposed areas, after all even in combat we cannot tarnish the characters unparalleled beauty, they can only take more dangerous wounds at the end of the fight because then we know it's over
    3. When bringing the military in a fight, it should be important that you should feature all the vehicles in their assigned roles. Just kidding! that requires actual research, it's totally okay to use F-22s in ground attack roles or attack helicopters in anything other than ambush tactics, it's not like it's totally breaking immersion!

The main heroine(if you wanna call her that) doesn't get romantically involved with anyone(Overly Strict Shy Girl being straight, Stepford Smiler and Broken Bird older Girl being bi and into my next contender that being Cross Dressing Lesbian Girl who has feelings for the protagonist but said protagonist is straight so it won't happen and the Only Male Returning Hero is already taken) and is very much Oblivious to Love.

    But can skill share teach me how to become an anime protagonist?

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher 6 років тому +107

      How to be an anime protagonist:
      Step 1: Be born special or 'happen' to run into something that makes you special. It doesn't matter how this actually effects your development as a person or how this might be at odds with other existing powers in the world, we'll just learn them later anyways! All that matters is that nobody else can do what you can do unless they're EEVVIILLLL!
      Step 2: Find a tsundere and/or perky female side character! It doesn't matter if she's good, evil, or ambiguous, she'll eventually fall in love with main character-chan one way or another because as an anime protagonist you're just such a good person!
      Step 3: Attend a highschool. Even if you're trying to get involved with foreign powers or want to go on epic journeys, ALWAYS involve a highschool. Why? Because now that you've met Waifu-kun number 1, you'll need to stock up on your harem, of course! Gotta get that love triangle one way or another, how else are we supposed to keep up marketing figures- UHH, I mean, keep the 'audience engaged'... in the 'plot'.... Everyone knows that any story without fanservice is meaningless!
      Now that you've got all of that down, you're set! Go on out there, search for some ancient world-changing McGuffin, and have fun shoving your chosen brand of 'hard work makes me special' in the countless inevitable ideological mid-battle rantings to come! Because sure, we COULD acknowledge how hypocritical such a sentiment is for someone who didn't have to work to become special. But that would actually be deep and complex, and the last thing we ever want to do is make the situation any harder to follow than 'good person punches bad person REALLY hard'. Now, find something that works and repeat it for the next 50 arcs, because I'm SURE that won't get dumb fast at all!

      From my -admitedly limited - experience with the genre I'd say you need to folow these steps to become an anime protagonist.
      1. If male, get a stupid haircut that makes you look like a pineapple that got run over by a lorry.
      If female, make sure you either look like a preteen with slightly elongated canines or like an undernurished crossdressing boy. OR have a set of boobs that are so large that any level of physical exercise would be nigh impossible without severe pain and possible damge to you spinal collum.
      2. dress up like you stepped on a landmine in a costume shop. (if male don't forget to wear at least 4 belts)
      3. get a sword the size of a surf board or some similary impractical weapon.
      4. If male, spend most of the time either acting like a brainless testosterone fueled twat or an angsty bitch.
      If female, act either like you just escaped from an asylum and replaced your medication with energy drinks, or like an insufferable cold bitch who thinks that even the slightest display of positive emotion would bring about the end of the world.
      5. In combat, defy at least one fundamental law of physics every 5 seconds.
      6. make sure you once worked for an evil entity (corrupt megacorp works fine. Alternatively, a nazi-esque regime is also permissable) even if you look barely old ennough to be out of college, but now fight them for some il-defined reason.
      Make sure your actions have a hippie-esque "technology is evil" message even if you live in a hydraulic civilisation.

    I think the opposite of plot armour is even worse. The way mooks die when they are lightly breathed upon. Unless you instantly decapitate an opponent or pierce their heart they're going to be able to at least do *something* before keeling over, through adrenaline alone. Instead it's always: 2 cm penetration=*blurk* dies instantly.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 6 років тому +1

      Yes, but at least it make a sense from practical reason if we deliberately make a power fantasy. The real power armor make bullets literally reversing when reach close proximity of a protagonist what is dumb.

    • @JohnDoe-gu4cq
      @JohnDoe-gu4cq 6 років тому +4

      Well, if you ignore certain real world facts then yes. Just don't think too hard about actual anatomy or range of motion. At least bullet reflecting armor prevents that. Of course, it in turn pretends physics and shock from impact doesn't exist. And that is dumb. But it's a trade off. IMO, the very concept of power fantasy is dumb, overused, and generally unrealistic. It is not that it can't be done well or be used in a good story. It's just that it is an inherently flawed concept which usually leads to a lot of unrealistic aspects to go along with it.

      Honestly when it comes to anime, you have to remember that it's written for a cultural and linguistic standard very different from our own. Japanese is a sharp and precise language, while Japanese culture is descriptive and informational. Putting those two things together creates something very different than what we know, which is why localization *departments* exist as opposed to localization *persons*. A lot more needs to be changed than just the words. What makes sense on this side of the Pacific doesn't necessarily fly on the other, and vice-versa.

    • @matsudamatsumoto7742
      @matsudamatsumoto7742 6 років тому +22

      While I am certain it is true in some areas, in others I don't think it can really apply. I've seen Japanese films where they don't frontload exposition everywhere and pause the plot to do so. Like in Cowboy Bebop or the earlier episodes of Evangelion, they don't dump it on the audience. So I do believe that some of that is due to the anime industry having poor writing skills in modern times. And a whole host of other issues... But some of those won't get better until the writing gets better.

    • @swishfish8858
      @swishfish8858 6 років тому +12

      You can say the same about us, though, too. Look at the film industry. Our most popular major film lines involve superheroes and high-action, none of which put a lot of focus on the writing. Then you look at smaller releases, and intellectual TV shows and the like, and the writing is suddenly "better". And now, let's face it, anime is Japan's major tourist attraction at this point. So it's going to automatically be dumbed down to both approach a wider audience, and to be faster and easier to make.

  • @DerSamalander

    The problem with plot armor is that it prevents the main character from dying just because he is the main character. Of course he should't die. Otherwise the story wouldn't continue but there are other ways to let your main character survive a battle scene than him getting saved by fortune. He for example could find clever ways to prevent his death even when he is seemingly inferior to the enemy. To do such by his own strength (not necessarily physical) he gets much more believable not to die. Then the enemies can also be really tough and bring the main character to the edge of defeat but only due to his actions he survives.
    I hope this explains a bit how plot armor is not needed to have the main character live through a battle scene and thereby even become more plausible. :)

      There is another, less extreme example for the protaginist dying: Matrix. Neo dies, due to saving the world. He sacrifices himself for the lives of his friends. They meanwhile celebrate their victory over the machines and later realize that Neo is dead. The protagonist defeasts the enemy but doesn't witness the positive outcome of it. But his friends do. He doesn't die for nothing but not for himself.

    Ah, you forgot something that audiences REALLY love:
    After a huge 10 minute monotonous obligatory action scene at the end the villain is finally defeated by falling off a cliff - the love interest says ‘is it over?’ And the hero either responds “Yeah.” Before falling down, or says “Not quite.” As a massive mechanical hypercharged flying alien squid monster ridden by the villain emerges from the cliff - the hero manages to wake up at the last second and defeat it. But it comes at the cost of the comedic relief’s miserable life.
    But of course, he’s resurrected by a kiss/wish/macguffin.

    Funny having the anti-hero modeled after Guts as the manga likes to play it both ways: Getting that cannon attached to his arm is presented as pretty badass, but that one time he reflexively tried to catch someone falling with that same prosthetic arm it hits him and the reader pretty hard some things just aren't gonna be fixed no matter what.

    •  6 років тому +16

      Ziliock _The Last Jedi_ is an example of what not to do with fan fiction. Don't incorporate it. I'm talking about those scenes with Rey and Kylo, and Kylo being shirtless and flustering Rey. Rey knew Kylo as the man who murdered Han Solo in cold blood, sliced open Fin's back, and tried to kill them all. Yet she gawked like a schoolgirl and it was just...it made her seem weak, controlled by hormones.
      And then with Snoke, he said Kylo needed to finish training and to bring Rey to him in VII. In VIII, since Rian made it to appease fan fiction writers, he had the final training be killing Rey. It made Snoke out to be an idiot. Why bring her there just to kill her? And why have it be Kylo's final act of training instead of killing Leia? Us fans know who Rey is. Kylo doesn't. He barely knows her.

      I think most writer don't care, it's a really rare occasion for a fanfic to become canon, or at least be referenced in the source material, so most of the time they go under the radar.
      For a fan work to be noticed by the creators of the source material you kind of need a really really large following for that to happen.
      One example of a fanfic becoming "cannon"(loosely in a possible alternate time-line) is Fallout: Equestria, that story got so popular among bronies and even a lot of non-bronies that during a season finale, which involved time travel, one of the alternate time-lines the main characters end up(albeit briefly) is a wasteland very similar to one described in the fanfic.
      in fact FoE got so popular it received the greenlight to be printed and sold as an actual novel as well as receiving so much support from the fans, that it kind of become a fandom on it's own, with games and side-stories(aka. fanfics of the fanfic), animations, music, etc...
      Though that's a really rare exception.
      Sonic Mania got a similar treatment, being turned into an official product.

      Ok, I start with an army, (more a team of 20) marching through a, "distant world" and killing creatures they find there.
      The army passes one creature that the leader sees, but is to scared to lead them to it so they keep moving.
      After a few days they hear the creature scream as it finds the corpses and it hunts down the army in record time.
      After an action scene where only the leader survives and only because, he escaped. The story starts some time, BEFORE the previous scene.
      Ok, there it is. What do you think

    • @ayyylmao101
      @ayyylmao101 6 років тому +24

      Darth Biomech
      Well, it's NOT just who struck whom, right? I'd suggest reading/watching an action scene from another source of media, then writing down all the subtle elements you saw (like any motion with their eyes, their facial expressions, what they may have thought of a move or the general fight, their physical state - as in tiredness, injuries, handicaps, etc., their emotional state - boredom, happiness, fear, anger, confusion, etc.; and description of their surroundings, clothes, appearance, situation, etc.) Sometimes the description of a fight doesn't even have to include "who struck whom", as you say it.

    • @thenew4559
      @thenew4559 6 років тому +18

      Focusing on the emotions, feelings and condition of the characters is Important (you can mention thei fatigue, pain, injury, mental state, adrenaline, heart beating, etc). Also mention their movement outside of punches and attacks, you have to design a well thought out fightin style and describe essential movements that allow characters to pull off more complex techniques and attacks. Mental strategy is another important part of a fight, thus speaking to the strategizing the characters undergo can help. Finally there is terrain- assuming they aren’t stationary this should be an important part of a fight; also, if they are changing the terrain in their fight that should be considered and possibly incorporated into their strategy/movement.

      I find it funny that I'm the one giving this advice, since I'm so fucking bad at it, but any advice telling you to expand on simple actions is correct. In films you see and hear, you understand perfectly what's going on, in the event that it's shot properly. In written media you _imagine_ what's seen, heard, tasted, touched, smelled, and otherwise felt. Just as it's the director and cinematographers' jobs to ensure you see the action clearly when necessary, it's the author's job to do the same with *all* of the elements that make up one's life for the reader. You might wonder how you get across a frantic action scene by stopping to describe what it tastes like to have a glock smack against your teeth - for a third of a second - but if the audience feels it, they're with you for it. I'll, admit I can imagine the "action list" being a useful pacing tool under certain circumstances, but I think prose writers have to accept that the majority of good writing is presenting the world in a kind of slow motion replay. You don't have the luxury of filling the audience's heads with the important details in a quick sensory jolt, but they have to know what it was _like_ to be there.

      There is this atheist swimming in the ocean. All of the sudden he sees this shark in the water, so he starts swimming towards his boat.
      As he looks back he sees the shark turn and head towards him. His boat is a ways off and he starts swimming like crazy. He's scared to death, and as he turns to see the jaws of the great white beast open revealing its teeth in a horrific splendor, the atheist screams, "Oh God! Save me!"
      In an instant time is frozen and a bright light shines down from above. The man is motionless in the water when he hears the voice of God say, "You are an atheist. Why do you call upon me when you do not believe in me?"
      Aghast with confusion and knowing he can't lie the man replies, "Well, that's true I don't believe in you, but how about the shark? Can you make the shark believe in you?"
      The Lord replies, "As you wish," and the light retracted back into the heavens and the man could feel the water begin to move once again.
      As the atheist looks back he can see the jaws of the shark start to close down on him, when all of sudden the shark stops and pulls back.
      Shocked, the man looks at the shark as the huge beast closes its eyes and bows its head and says, "Thank you Lord for this food for which I am about to receive..."

    There's one thing I miss about many older movies (one of many things, I mean): action scenes where the hero gets properly beat up. In Terminator Sarah Connor has to crawl away from the robot on her hands and knees after several explosions and falls. In Die Hard John McClane gets cut up and bruised all over, especially when his feet are torn to pieces by broken glass. Hell, in Predator Dutch (played by the Governator himself) only beats the titular alien because it decides it's more sporting to fight him mano a mano, and even then it whops his ass until he springs a trap on it.

      One of my brother's favorite D&D adventures he keeps telling me about is this one time the dungeon notes just said there was a table in the middle of the room. When the party got into a fight in that room, my brother asked what the table was made out of. The DM paused, gave him a funny look, and said, _"um... solid oak, I guess."_
      My bro's response was that he wanted to know if it would support his character's weight (which it turns out it could), so he could save time by climbing over it instead of taking several turns to go around it. After he did that, later in the fight another of his teammates wound up dodge-rolling across it, somebody else went under it, they threw an enemy across it, they overturned it and hid behind it to block an attack, then flipped it back upright again- that friggin' -unimportant- oak table became the center point of that entire combat!

    So in my story any time a character Receives an injury it affects them later on in the story, For example One of my characters recieves the cliche "Shoulder" hit, however instead of leaving them unscathed, this Character Has a Fucked up shoulder for the rest of the series and Is no longer combat, a second example is One of the 3 main characters
    So "Maine" is arrogant, Inpatient, Lone wolf, and Has anger issues, I'm not going to get into his whole Character arc but near the end of the first story he is shot in his head (He has a helmet on) so he ends up with brain damage and is in a coma for the next story and the third he returns having learned from his mistakes however due to the Brain damage he still Suffers from skitzophrenia and has problems making Logical Decisions which End up negatively affecting the team later on (idk how to spell it lol)
    So is this the right decision? Or am I taking the injuries too far ?

    The long philosophical monologues in anime battles are absolutely essential! It's totally not a means of drawing out the plot so that the animators can make a battle take several additional episodes without going over budget! Plus we all know the best way to resolve a complex philosophical debate about the nature of human society or the value of a particular set of moral choices is by simply being able to beat up your opponent even if the ability to win a fight doesn't really say whether or not a moral or a societal viewpoint is wrong! It's like the old adage...might makes right! And my heroes' philosophy of love, peace, and tolerance is totally right because they can beat the tar out of anyone who says otherwise!

    I’m glad I’ve been doing 90% of this advice already. I love making my fight scenes as descriptive as possible. The only thing I think I need to work on is the special awareness. I’m decent at it but that’s definitely where I’m lacking. Always love the videos man!

    Humans are fragile beings. We are 99% water, an amalgamation of brittle bones and squishy organs. If you get hit in the face with an RPG it doesn't matter how many sit-ups you did that morning. You die. When writing an action scene always remember that if you can't feel the bones break and the flesh tare... you're doing it wrong.

      Thanks Mr Denton
      Like with superman in the justice league if a superman level villain and him got into a fist fight the half the league(including batman) would be dead from the shockwave of the first punch and after three exchanges there would heavy quakes and most of if not all of metropolis would be dead from the shockwaves and quakes.
      Goddammit now I feel like an idiot because I lost my point but I guess I was in agree.
      Another one was when people get knocked off the ground only to get up when a punch or impact like that would be like getting hit by car and you would be dead.

      Humans are scary. We can survive and function after losing half our volume of blood. Our bones are 8 times harder by mass than concrete. We can run other organisms to the point of collapse, break thick stone and wood with our bare hands (and a lot of training) are entirely immune to EMP, are resistant to radiation, operate without maintenance for up to 120 years, and can move unassisted over absolutely any terrain.
      Humans are scary. But yeah we could stand to have better replacement parts/warranty. Maybe a better sports mode. Economy mode is pretty good.

      Humans are versatile and vulnerable, there's no question, it's impressive. A guy can get hit by lighting three times and then die from shellfish.

    There's also the fact that you should make the main villains too unstoppable that the heroes don't have a chance, but then suddendly out of the blue the heroes become stronger than the villains!
    By what? Coming up with a plan to defeat them? Getting a power-up? No! That's unecessary, just make your heroes win using the power of Deus Ex Machina and all will be well!
    Speaking of which, there are great ways to make a villain overpowered! Why must they have any weaknesses and build tension whether the heroes will win or not when you can make the fight really one-sided!
    I may have forgotten some advices.

    I'd go with the "never a fan of cubism" line. I can hear a Marvel character saying it already.
    No hard feelings towards Marvel movies, I always enjoy a good one-liner

    This video makes me think of back when I watch the Maze Runner Movies, which I can describe as stupid action scenes of Kids who have no military training easily defeating heavily armed and armored soldiers with only pistols or constant chase scenes one after the other literally minutes apart from each other giving little to no room for character growth that isn't completely forced.
    It even ends with the hero trying to resolve a poorly written love triangle which ironically dooms all of humanity but is glossed over completely, stopping just before the happy ending is ruined by realizing the main character is leaving thousands of people to die and suffer in a desert while he hangs out on an a tropical island.

    If your story has an ensemble cast, there's a good chance that every one in the party has their own special abilties and powers that separate then from the rest. Absolutely be sure to have the charatcer never find a way to creatively combine thier skills together to make even cooler skills that they couldn't accomplish alone. Every charatcer should be static with thier powers and how they fight! A charatcer who is strong should never THINK of a smart way to use thier strength in a pinch, they should only hit things! Thinking is for the spelllcasters, who should only use the diverse power of magic in a totally binary way! And just for safe measure, the party should be super strong from beginning to end. Having characters actually have to grow their talents makes it so that we can't make giant action scenes whenever we want!

      3 is medical and ingenuity
