Marcus Trescothick was out injured in that match. Straus came in his place and played brilliantly. But, Trescothick recovered before the following match and was set to come back into the side. That meant Straus being dropped to maintain balance in the line up. Hussain didn't want the young lad to sit in the sidelines after performing so well on his debut. So, he declared his retirement. Mad respect to Hussain for seeing the big picture and being a class act. Not a lot of people would have done that. A true gentleman through and through. Hats off.

It wasn't Trescothick but it was Vaughan(who was then the captain of the team) who was injured for the first test. Strauss came in to take his place - Trescothick not only played but also captained the team in the 1st test of the series. Because the return of the captain would mean Strauss would miss out, Nasser Hussain volunteered to drop out of the side and announced his retirement, which allowed Strauss to stay in the team with Vaughan slotting in at 4 when the team went to Headingley for the next test match.

I had a school tag rugby tournament when I was about 10 that he was at watching his son, who was the same age as me, and myself and a few of the other cricketers in my class walked over to him during a break and asked him a couple of questions about playing for England, as any young fans would, and he immediately told us to go away even though he was on his own standing there, with nothing to do. That wasn't the only time he has done such a thing. When he is not surrounded by cameras and other pros, he can be a very, very arrogant man.

Naser Hussain is the man who changed the mentality of English cricket. I'm a big fan of his batting, aggressive captaincy in the field and this days his commentary. Lots of love and respect for the 'Lion of English cricket' from Bangladesh.

Actually he doesn't get the credit he deserves.. Barring ashes, he was great leader.
Perhaps only captain who can say he conquered ASIA... Interesting field sets, bowling changes is what I remember of Hussain
As a player I always used to feel he underperformed, he had a good attacking game to spinners but rarely wud he play freely...
My favorite moment, When sanjay said hometown boy, when nasser played in chennai 25-01-2002 vs India
But I have huge regards for Nasser, great captain great commentator as well

I don't remember calls for him to go growing louder, if I remember rightly this and the previous summer (and winter tour in between) had seen a fantastic resurgence in English cricket after the doldrums of the 90s and anticipation was actually starting to build for the ashes. Hussein was at the heart of it, and when people talk about 2005 we don't hear any more of all the hard work in the years that led up to it that made it possible
