I was at this game watching from the football ground end. The second day started with so much trepidation, England building themselves a lead.
My two key memories of the WI 2nd innings were the atmosphere when Goughie took those wickets before tea and then the sight of the stumps being flattened by Caddick at the other end.
Amazing!
Darren Gough was why I thought I could bowl fast as a kid. I didn't. But what a player.
Pants rant
Gough and Sid Lawrence batting Alan Donald was a fond memory - two tailenders swatting a fast bowling great in his prime all over the park.
I remember trying to mimmick the action of gough and cad
@@drahcirnevarc9152- was it Syd Lawrence or Phil DeFreitas?
@@nathanwilliams2152 Syd Lawrence I thought, but it's possible I misremembered. He's always been very popular down here in Bristol.
The real highlight was Brian Lara batting in sunglasses!
😂 that too in overcast conditions.

The Bowling Action of Caddick was Fantastic

Absolutely YES
So were his ears
i realize I am kinda off topic but do anyone know a good website to watch newly released tv shows online?
His appeal was even better 👍🏻
A lot like Sir Richard Hadlee. Caddick was born in NZ. Was inspired by Hadlee I'm sure.
8:41 OMFG wat an outswinging yorker 😍
ooohh! enjoyed that swinging yorker, changing the direction from leg to off and the way batsman was struggling to balance himself. Gem of a ball from caddick
I used to bowl that on ea sports cricket 2004 and 2007 ❤️😂

Kristen Giles yeah, but not to storm the pitch after a game when the players are still there. That was ended in either 2000 or 2001 with the steward being trampled in the england - Pakistan series
This was the first England game my dad took me too...not a bad one to start with!
Gough was class. Clean action. Great pace and movement.
Also he was a nice bloke. Well respected all over the world because of that one thing alone. This is from an Aussie.
@ROBERT DEAN Little fat lad from Barnsley.
Darren Gough🌹Star⭐ Bowler .

Huge Darren Gough fan, he had more heart in one session, every session than some bowlers have in an entire test
@ROBERT DEAN Feared and respected. He just kept coming at the batsmen. One of the very few all time greats, no question.

DARREN GOUGHs only test hat trick
@@muttleycrewall time great who, Gough? Averaged 28 last I checked lol
@@anweshchatterjee7595 There's bowling averages then there's the actual bowling in the prevailing conditions against the batsmen and you also skipped right past the part where I mentioned his attitude, which is extremely rare and which will never appear on any bowling statistics analysis. They don't hand out Wisden cricketer of the year awards to minor players.
So, if all you have is one data point like a bowling average to bring to the discussion and a "lol" as an attempt to make some kind of nebulous point about how amusing you find it all, you don't really have anything.
He was a good spearhead for us. Caddick had the more natural attributes for a quick bowler, but Goughie had the bigger heart. Cork and White also excelled in this series.
Gough-Caddick, Hoggard-Harmison, Broad-Anderson, England have produced some great pace pairs
Malcolm-Fraser.
also take into account english conditions... ie openers rarely rule in england... that's why Cook is such a stud, averaging twice as much as his fellow 10+ openers after Strauss retired. So tbh, although Broad and Anderson are world class, u still need to look at their figures abroad.
Bob willis-ian botham
Trueman and Statham
Dominic Cork-Peter Martin, Gough-Caddick, Flintoff-Harmison, Broad-Anderson, Plunkett-Tremlett, Stokes-Woakes...!!!
I had these highlights recorded onto tape and watched them frequently. I remember everything in this video, from the wickets, to the celebrations, the commentary (back when Mark Nicholas was listenable and uncorrupted by his later Aussie colleagues) to even the cuts, edits and voice overs. England had such a great bowling line-up in that series. Gough, Caddick, Cork and White were all incredibly dangerous in those conditions.
Darren Gough's action is impeccable..
Never knew Caddick could swing it like that! That's marvellous!!
Those three clean bowled wickets were utter filth..... just unplayable.
Those were golden days of cricket
I followed this match on Cricinfo. It is absolutely lovely to watch the action. 18 years back and still the memories are fresh in my mind. Thanks for this upload

so was caddick.
Goughy...upper body strength and swinging deliveries...so good to see....you don't have to be 6'4" to be a great bowler....Caddick....just making that cherry go exactly where he wants...an amazing spell of bowling...
I helped Caddick a little bit with his testimonial year, nice bloke, straightforward.
When cricket is good it is unbeatable, watching batsmen in any format play shots is nice. Watching bowlers really test batsmen, confuse them, scare them, hurt them, make them think and eventually send their off stumps flying is what i love the most
Remember it like it was yesterday. Can’t believe it’s been 23 years
Caddick was always old
..white haired
Gough's bowling action is so smooth
It is strange how Michael Slater is commentating and he was not yet retired. The year after this he toured England as a player.
9:10, I think that is one of the best balls I’ve ever seen bowled
Conditions man...all about the conditions...see this guys subcontinent record...he was so average... every team is a king in their own backyards
Shivam Pawar so true. All teams are tons better at home. It was a rip snorter though:)
@@shivampawar4450 Of all English bowlers, Caddick has a very good subcontinent record. Marginally better than Stuart Broad. Check your facts before calling a bowler wrecking havoc @37 average..
@@shivampawar4450 He only played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and a very limited amount at that. 3 matches in each country means nothing. An average of 25 in Sri Lanka isn't bad though.
Darren Gough a Master Class.. My fav English cricketer to date
A right armer swinging it back in is useful against 7 Left-handers I guess.
Indeed, I'm left handed and I much prefer the ball angling across towards the slips from a right arm over bowler. As a left hander you tend to develop playing strong shots off your legs when the ball comes straight down the line of leg or middle and leg, as it often does from right arm bowlers, and square on the offside & cover-driving as the ball drifts across you a lot. If a bowler can get it to swing and / or seam back in it always causes problems. It's a difficult skill especially for club players. Class bowlers like Gough and Caddick showing how it's done in this video - superb bowling.
I'm a left hander and the ball that comes back in from a right arm over bowler is the most difficult to deal with...
Look at the crowd. It's not a premier league game rather it's a test match!
Unthinkable in 2019. T 20 cricket destroyed beauty of test and odi cricket.
Darren Cough and Caddick were the favourites growing up
Best swing bowling display!!
I once found myself standing behind Andy Caddick in the queue to pay at a motorway services - Leigh Delamere I think. My god he was tall!
How was Michael Slater doing the commentary as he was still an active player that time and this doesn't seem to be sky sports footage?
I think it's sky sports mistake he was still a active player in international cricket
Even active can Cricketers commentate at times.
It is mark nicholas not Slater...😅
@@manishtawade833 yeah Mark Nicholas with an Australian accent...
Slats commentated on Channel 4 (hence the beginning of the video says it's from Channel 4) towards the end of his international career. Was a regular on it for most of the C4 years.
Oh my poor chap Courtney Walsh don't worry ! You holds a world record in Batting 😂
Probably a very important day for both countries - England got their fighting pride back after years of mediocrity by winning this series. Ambrose and Walsh finally retired after this (both were ANCIENT in bowling terms in 2000) and the WI decline really accelerated without them.

Brought back so many unforgettable memories! It was, in hindsight, where it all turned around for English cricket: a historic series win against West Indies after the disasters of the 80s and 90s. England never again sank to such lows (until the recent ashes at any rate)
Very true - What a series. I started following test cricket during the New Zealand disaster, so I think this was the first time I saw England do well
@@stuartcarden1371: It was a historic series, not just for the fact that England won against West Indies after 31 years. They had been poor for the best part of 2 decades. With central contracts kicking in, this series was where it started turning around for them
Brings back memories that. Goughy was actually quite pacy near 90mph swing bowling like Steyn actually.
He was in those days, before his leg fracture!
@@ImtiazAhmed-ug7bf Damn straight - simple, side-on, elegant. Copied it during gully cricket and got butchered, though :(
@@ankit1400 the action has many subtle intricacies in terms of Weight distribution, ball grip and balance. To perfect it you'll need to have the fitness level of Darren Gough or Richard hadlee.
He also cut the ball as well, he picked up probably 15 test wickets with his off-cutter, especially when he bowled in Australia or the West Indies.
Classic seam bowling. It’s a good lesson for any bowler on how to take wickets in England. Bowl in the right areas, and the rest will come. That includes swing, wickets, and, depending on how fast you are, pace.
Jeeez how many left handers?! 🤣
Too many from the Windies point of view, given the way Gough and Caddick bowled
A Test Match that ends in 2 days is totally unthinkable, but 23 years ago it did.West Indies totally outplayed by England with bat and ball 🏏 😀.

I loved this after growing up seeing England being done over by the Windies so often. And Goughie - how good was the hat-trick ball to Lara?
I doubt if Lara ever wore sunglasses while coming out to bat after this innings!
Every test series in England has at least one innings where the bowlers are rampant & basically decides that test.
Who is here after England all-out on 77 by West Indies cricket team
Im here because of the uk lockup,i mean lockdown.
Love how Brian Lara rocks the shades at the crease. Gough is a legend, him and Caddick were a legendary opening attack!
Magnificent! Late swing and uprooted stumps aplenty!
Loved this evocative series. Joyful cricket.
Quite a few future Cricket commentators on the field.
Rewind 20 years and that England team would not have lived with Holding, Garner, Roberts, Marshall, Richards etc.
This was probably the beginning of the end of West Indies test team. They never had a team with such players playing together after this group. Lara, Adams, Chanderpaul, Campbell, Sarwan, Walsh, Ambrose etc. Lara's 400 and his exploits in Sri Lanka came after this but the writing was on the wall.
fast bowlers at its best..... hardly these days fast bowlers can enjoy that luxury like in 1980 1990 or early 2000
Who's is here after watching ind Vs England 3rd test match 2 day's test cricket Results..
Dominic Cork was the Andre Nel of England
I love that side on action of this bowler !♥️
As a kid, I remember watching Andy Caddick bowl and wondering how bizarre(wobbly) his bowling action was.
Me too bro
He had a very gangly approach but once at the crease was very fluent. Always thought he was an underrated bowler, could have been a yard quicker if not for the ears :p
Great bowling. I always thought Test cricket was a test of endurance, skill, not to mention character, and for the captain a gruelling and harrowing test of leadership. But the modern day game is all about showmanship. Besides the matches are almost always fixed/rigged based on bets.
While all comments about Gough and Caddick are true, a word for the skipper Naseer Hussain. He dragged England from the brink after they were being thrashed by all and sundry and gave them wins in England and abroad. This team went on to win in SL and Pakistan. If I recall correctly this was their first series win against WI in decades, so all that talk about conditions favoring only England is unfair. WI had won in these conditions before and had better bowlers in Walsh and Ambrose (albeit aged) who shoul've done just as well in these conditions.
He sowed the seeds for their more famous 2005 Ashes win.
A test match finishes in 2 days seems unthinkable doesn't it, and nearly 2 test hatricks. What a test match, you don't see games like this very often, especially at Hedingley.
In 80's and 90's such a good video quality in England cricket... Hit like if u agree

agreed! felt the same
Very difficult to fathom why he left it given where it pitched, and the fact he was out in a similar fashion in the first innings. I bet he felt like a right banana afterwards.
I am here after an inept batting display by England today against India with the test finishing inside 2 days. Tino Best's tweet brought me here. Bet none of the English commentators were clamoring for this headingley pitch to be called poor. Beautiful bowling by England they said. Lack of application by the West Indies they said. Well well.
I don't know why so many bowlers waste so many balls bowling bouncers nowadays when you can see what happens when you bowl line and length and let the natural (or is that unnatural) swing does the rest.
ive never played a very high level a few senior grade games for my club mostly lower grade however I do know, once or twice in every players career you just have a spell of bowling where you are just magical, and every ball is dangerous Caddick and Gough had one in this game.
Why was Brian Lara batting in sunglasses on an overcast day?
"Look at this field. Have you ever seen anything like it?" Pretty sure that was Steve Waugh's standard field to start any test innings ;-)
Sheesh the west indies team was so bad these days. They really did make a average at best English team look world class. Gough has one of my favourite bowling actions but Windies just had fundamental weaknesses that were never coached out of them for decades. Bad footwork, angled bat fishing and playing around balls. Dont get me started on the bowlers either. After Walsh and Ambrose they were in shambles for ages...
When you replay this extraordinary footage and see what Gough and Caddick could do you wonder how they only averaged 28/29 over their careers. Gough is an especial Misterio.
A 28 or 29 average aint bad man. In the grand scheme of things if your career average is below 30 with a pretty good strike rate, I think you have done pretty well as a bowler.
He was easily one of the unluckiest bowlers I've ever seen. With a little more good fortune, he would have ended with vastly better career figures
Caddick came to Australia against a class side and bowled too short.
2:45 Ahhh, the days when we had reliable 90mph fast bowlers. We could o' done with that in Australia.
Great to hear the Yorkshire crowd behind Gougheh!
It's easy to rag on the West Indies but lordy, those Gough deliveries would probably have got anyone in the world out.
