    I maintain that this will one day be known as one of the most comprehensive, all encompassing cruising records on youtube. I enjoy every episode whether it's conversation based, action packed or showcasing new places. Thanks for once again making my Tuesday a little brighter!

      One day...why not now? (✿◠‿◠) hehehehe...seriously, thank you Evan. Drake and I do try to show all aspects of cruising, and the concerns of having someone aboard as crew seems to loom large for so many people. We were incredibly lucky to have Eanna aboard and we wanted to try to show what was going on inside our heads and his as the voyage progressed. It paints a more complete picture in this story we're telling.
      Thanks so much for joining us each week and fair winds to you! ⛄️-Monique

      Always NOW for me :) But now "later" for so many more who will one day discover it. Still my favorite show after all these years. The details are why I like it so much because that's where the real reality happens.

    Eanna's a good dude to have as crew. He communicates better then anyone I know about everything. He leaves no doubt about anything and it's those talks that you need more than anything else. I'd want his opinion about things.

      Eanna was brilliant to have aboard as crew. He was certainly a competent sailor but, more importantly, he was a lot of fun to have aboard and meshed well with everyone. I honestly think made this entire voyage better just by being there. (✿◠‿◠) ⛄️-Monique

    Just found your channel and videos a month or so ago by searching for sailing blogs around New England having just placed my 30' Hunter in the Mystic, CT area this past Fall .... this is really GREAT material! I have spent my winter awaiting to get my boat back into the water for the upcoming season, these videos keep me on the edge of my seat in anticipation of sailing again soon.
    I have been following channels like S/V La Vagabonde, Delos, Follow the Boat, etc and pick up bits and pieces from each .... but, was looking for more adventures in the vicinity of where I will be sailing for the next several years. I love the fact that you are dedicated to the vblogs and the passion of sailing and living aboard. I doubt that I could ever convince my wife to go this route, but being in my late 40's now, it is VERY encouraging to see you out there doing this and being so different than other sailing channels of young couples partying there way thru tropical waters. Not saying all are like that ... I feel that I can better relate to you and your videos.
    I love the pace, the length of each episode, the addition of Éanna, and just the adventure of it all. Kudos! You make me want to be a better sailor and strive to get out there and just sail! Thank you for all your hard work and sharing of your adventures!

    I love that Mo is the voice of reason at the beginning regarding the drone test flight. Way to go there Mo. Us guys just want to build that rickety ramp and jump our bikes without forethought to what injuries may lay in wait. We never grow out of that I think. Also really enjoyed the honesty conversation at the end beautiful gents.

    Hi Drake... Really, who wants to go to Greenland? I've been waiting for sooo long. Meanwhile, Delos is someplace in the middle of the Indian Ocean with an atoll all to themselves... White Spot Pirates and Karl have circumnavigated the western Caribbean and passed through the canal to the Pacific. And Drake, in Paragon, is hanging about in Newfoundland talking about how remote Greenland is going to be... its getting a bit deep. here. I really like the sailing and not so much sitting about bars talking about it.

      What? I think Drake has a wonderful ass. LOL. More rigging shots of him bent over. Sexy.
      As for sitting at the bar and have a gab fest? Love it. Just a bit more Mo please the rapport with all three is great. Plenty of sailing to come. I do like the port stuff keep it coming.

      I love how these conversations make me feel like I'm hanging with a calm, reasonably confident and professional crew. Yeah, it takes away all the epic "Delos" style perfect days that the other channels create about sailing but that's kinda of why I watch Drake and Monique. I like that chill reality check.
      I would like basic tourist info. Like how you got to the bar and the name of the place would be nice. And any accommodations that you might notice. I still love the Saint Martin episode "Where the Cruiser Go" with the tour of the dock and the bar where Mo was studying for her scuba class. I want to rent one of the dock's two apartments and just chill like a cruiser for a week. Bucket List....
      Have a great weekend wherever you guys are at !
      Cheers,
      Mike

      Hey James,
      First, this video was filmed in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Not
      Newfoundland, which is where we sailed to next, about 600 nautical miles
      on the rhumbline.
      Who wants to go to Greenland? Good question! Or perhaps a better
      phrasing would be "Why did we go to Greenland?"
      We went to Greenland, and beyond for many reasons. We did it to
      experience living aboard in different parts of the world. We did it to
      learn about other cultures and to create friendships. We did it because
      we love exploring the world by sail. We did it because we wanted to
      somehow have a positive effect on our world.
      Our strategy for our videos is really simple. We are telling the story
      of that journey. This includes everything that happened to us, and
      isn't limited to just sailing footage. Our goal is to tell the best
      story that we can.
      It sounds like an old cliché, but really it's as much about the journey
      as as it is the destination.
      If you only want just sailing footage, or just want videos about
      Greenland, then the options available to you via Google and UA-cam
      searches are endless. But if you want to watch the story of what
      happened to us on our journey, then that is what you'll
      find here.
      Fair winds to you,
      - Drake

    Enjoyed the conversation about expectations and the partnership of running a boat. Not always easy.
    So much fun to watch the practice flight of "Harry". I was holding my breath over the water. Will it crash? Will it come back? Can we catch it while it hovers over the boat? Is there suddenly too much wind? I would love one of these drones. I'm sure you have moved onto bigger and stronger ones by now.
    I also watched as Drake looked over at the little green sailing dinghy gliding by and heard some wistfulness in his voice? Can you sail your dinghy in these ports or is it too much trouble to set her up?
    Looking forward to Greenland aerial views! More great adventures to come!

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  7 років тому +2

      Ah, Drake certainly does love mucking about in a smaller sailboats similar to the ones he began sailing on, and he does get a certain wistfulness to his voice when he sees them. We are able to sail our dinghy, Wanda, around harbours like this and she's great fun. It's a little bit of a process to grab all the parts and set up the sailing rig, and I'd certainly think twice if it was just for an afternoon. I'm not sure Drake would think twice though. (✿◠‿◠)
      As for Harry, ugh, every time we fly over water I get a bit breathless. It's like throwing several thousand dollars into the wind and hoping it returns safely. We have updated our quadcopters over time and they are greatly improved since this first version. They are more responsive, take better footage, and definitely are able to deal with greater wind conditions. The latest one even has collision avoidance technology which is cool. We don't have that one yet as it's not in the budget, but we regularly drool over the latest models.
      Cheers ⛄️-Monique

    After following Drake and Monique, Alfie in Vancouver, and Dylan Winter's sailing videos for several years, l'm now thoroughly convinced more than ever that IF I get a cruising sailboat it has to have two sleeping cabins, not one cabin plus berths in the main salon...for both privacy and sanity. Having two independent heads is negotiable, but a decent, functional galley and a full cockpit enclosure is fundemental. I'm torn over the issue of a cutter versus a dbl-headsail ketch. At the cost of a slightly longer hull, I like the extra-room of a center cockpit w/ an accessible engine room. Plus, it gets the ickpit enclosure closer to the center of the boat versus all that windage at the stern.Dylan has a great turn of phase about extended voyaging in too-small a boat; "...it's like camping under the dining room table".

    Can't we go to Greenland already? With current publishing rate video will be obsolete media before we'll see your footage from there. All cruisers will have 24/7 3D 360° real time feed from their boats by then. :D

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  7 років тому +23

      Hi TheUglyGnome, a real time feed would not be the same a 20 minute video that took 40+hours to edit.
      We pushed off from North Carolina in March of 2013, and sailed from the US to Canada, Greenland, and then to Iceland where we spent the winter producing our Season 1 episodes. Then we spent the next season sailing to Faroe, Scotland, and down the east coast of Ireland to the south coast where we spent the next winter producing our Season 2 episodes. After that we spent the next Spring and Summer sailing up the west coast of Ireland back to Scotland which is where we are now working on producing Season 3.
      During the Summer season we are always filming and voyaging and rarely have any time for video editing or finding places to upload videos to UA-cam. We currently have over 1000 hours of video footage that we have not started editing yet. Our focus for Seasons 1,2,3 and beyond has always been to spend as much time as we need to tell our story well, rather than to try to tell it in real time.
      We are not a vine that tells a 6 second story or a channel that goes around the world in 8 episodes. Instead, we aim to tell a sequential story that covers the real aspects of cruising and all that happens to us along the way. We aim to share, not just the pretty cocktail hours and day sails, but all the particulars of real life cruising...the breakdowns (both gear and people), the set backs, the triumphs, the places we visit, and the people we meet.
      We hope that you find the story worthy and interesting regardless of when it was filmed. We will continue this in-depth coverage as we explore far flung destinations and can't wait to share the local distillery in Canada (with house dog!), what happens when you run out of propane in Greenland, and the thought process of when the risk of pushing off becomes too risky.
      It's all in there and we can't wait to share the rest of this journey with you.
      -⛵ Drake

      @drakeParagon  7 років тому +5

      Hi TheUglyGnome, OMG I'm sorry for throwing out that encyclopedia. bah... And thank you so much for your feedback. I rarely have time to watch other people's UA-cam videos, but when I do White Spot Pirates has always been one of my favorites. It would be so fantastic to see Karl and Nike in the same anchorage someday.

      Interesting, as I was thinking that while I love your (Drake's and Monique's) work and vicariously sailing with you, at the current publishing rate, you probably have enough material for 9 to 12 years of videos, even if you stop filming today. I wonder whether there's a way to speed up the story line without compromising the goals of the site? Best wishes, B. (PS: The Ugly Gnome might be right about the future of youtube videos as S/V Delos is already experimenting with 360 degree video, and no doubt 3D and virtual reality is around the corner)

    • @darinmbicknell
      @darinmbicknell 7 років тому +7

      Some people are willing to put a pace that is more realistic. That tells the story at the pace it actually happens. It is real. This is what human interaction is. I think this is the sort of style that allows the viewer to be present. To be in the moment. If you want manufactured timelines and faux drama with little or no substance there is plenty of that on UA-cam. I prefer the UA-camr does what they want not what the audience "wants" or "demands". There are millions of hours of content. This is a special sort of content. It's methodical yet interesting because of the real life characters presented. It is like sitting at the table and listening to good friends just gab. Sometimes it is great to listen to others conversing. When you go for only shorter and shorter sound bites and faster and faster action you really just compete with millions of other channels all doing the same thing to generate revenue. I am probably right in thinking the revenue is not the goal of this channel. It is more like sharing slides and recounting ones trials and tribulations on the journey. I do enjoy a lot of different sailing content but this one is special. Because of the story, the pace and the people.

    Getting ahead of myself here but I am looking to cross from NFLD to Ireland in the future about the same time of year on a 42 ft Lagoon Cat. Do you think the fiberglass hull would be a reason to avoid Greenland/Iceland? Obviously it would take more caution to avoid ice hull damage that being said the Cat has inherent buoyancy from a safety perspective. Thoughts?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  7 років тому

      Hi Peter, we saw lots of icebergs, growlers and bergy bits on the south west coast of Greenland during our 2 months there. And we had some hair raising nail biting experiences trying to avoid them, especially during heavy weather. I don't think that there was much chance of us getting stuck and crushed by ice because we were there during the Summer when there is far less ice than during winter when much of the waters we were in are solid ice.

      Thank you so basically as long as I'm cautious and doing it in mid to late June I should be ok(Things can happen but caution should prevail)? The alternative was to B-line for Cork, Ireland.
      Also do you have any recommendations on route planning software? Ideally something I can drop waypoints on and adjust and allow me to estimate timelines.
      The plan is to leave Toronto Canada for Nova Scotia and Cross from NFLD, spend late June and July in northern Europe and head to the med for later in the season and catch up with the fleet for the ARC to the Caribbean before November 1-13 depending on my launch point.

Watching it reminded me a lot of when I spent 3 months living with a German family in Germany back in 1986 when I was in the 11 grade. That was the first time I ever left the states, and it had such a profound effect on my life. I think it was that trip that made me realize that I wanted to spend my life exploring and living all over the world.
      In particular I have fond memories of exploring the great city of Hamburg. And ever since I started living aboard in 1995, I have dreamed that someday I would sail to Hamburg and spend a winter living aboard there. It's still on my bucket list. :)

      Ah - shows what I know! Ha! Sometimes I see a look - and think "I know that look" - like on morning WAKE UP OMG YOU NEED TO SEE THIS SUPER THING!!!!!!! ;-) I have resting bitchy face, and have a sarcastic sense of humor, so people think I'm cranky sometimes. Cheers!

      Hahahah PNWesty, sometimes when Drake wakes me up I have active bitch face. (✿◠‿◠) Not such a morning person, but I work on that. I also have a dry, sometime sarcastic sense of humour that can be interpreted different ways. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ⛄️-Monique

      I can't blame you a bit. "Lunenburg will still be there in an hour Drake. Go away." lols. Anyway - hope I wasn't too presumptive and put me in put me in the "More Mo" camp. Cheers from Oregon.
