    The tritium vials for the indicators are amazing for telling the time under any light condition . Aside from that, the watch is sub par for the price.

    I have 4 of them. My favorite is the Ultimate Navy Seal Chronograph 8102. I have worn it 90 percent of the time for 10 years now. It is all stainless with a saphire crystal. It is built like a tank. I have knocked it around and dropped it numerous times. I finally did break the stem but the Luminox service center fixed it for only $130 including new battery and seals. More recently I bought the Navy Seal 3254. Again it is all stainless with a saphire crystal and it is equally tough! The reason I love these watches is simple. When it is dark, I can always tell time. They always glow! And I never have to worry about taking them off no matter what I am doing. Are they an investment? I do not care as I have no plans of selling mine.

    I have had a few of the Luminox higher end watches. Have the Modern Mariner now. Rugged pretty much. Love the Tri tubes and the only reason I won't go Seiko anymore. I use the Tri Tubes during the night all the time.

    My 3001 is 18 years old. I replaced the battery some time in 2018, i think I paid $250 back then. The bezel numbers are a little worn off around the 12:00 and 6:00, and the bezel itself has a couple of scratches; but the glass is intact and the Tritium is still visible in the dark, although not as bright anymore, of course. The original velcro strap is long gone as is the replacement. These days it sports a black and red nato nylon strap. I beat the crap out of this watch thru the years and never failed. Awesome watch, definitely worth the money.

    Great review dude. They do quote 25 years approximately of lume life. The way I see it, 1/2 life every 12 years means - 100% at purchase, 50% at 12 years, 25% at 24 years, 12.5% at 36 years and 6.75% at 48 years. I’ll let you know what 12.5% looks like, but my nephew will have to tell you what 6.75% looks like. 😉

    The metals that watches are made out of can rust, which means they are not waterproof, but the watch is designed to resit the ingress of water. This applies to even the most expensive watches in the world.

I also have a few Timex watches and thus far all work well. Just got the MK1 Timex which I really like but the looks of my Luminox is better but quite a lot more in price. My Luminox goes through a battery about every 9 months. The second hand fell off after about a year. It was still under warranty so they fixed it at no charge. Still wear mine but I don't trust it completely. If I'm going into the woods, whether I'm backpacking or mountain biking, I wear a Protrek.The thing that keeps me wearing my Luminox is that I love the tacticool look to it.

    I just can't hate on Luminox. Everyone seems to want to, but I can't. I've had mine for 4 years now and it's been banged to hell. It's been dropped, slammed into brick posts, dropped in mud, etc. It's been sent in to have the crystal replaced once and asked them to check for any other damage (after all the drops and hits) and they reported a clean bill of health. I do think it's a little cheesy they keep using the military backround as a sales point. I don't believe they ever were a legit contractor for the military, and not a lot of soldiers or SEAL's really wore them. Marathon and G shock have had more prevalence than Luminox ever did in military use. But, they are good watches. I love mine.

    Lovely review, and I’m testing one loaned to me as I need to understand to why they cost the price they do. So far pictures don’t do them justice, and in the short time I’ve been using it, I’m impressed. I’ve worn it more than I thought, and find it practical for most occasions. Great fit and that rubber doesn’t make my wrist soggy with sweat ;)

    @The Maineiacguy I own G-Shocks for many years. I lover their durability, look and fucntions. One of the best things about them is the size. I have large wrists, so i prefer bigger watches. But the thing is, having a watch with so many functions is cool, but in the end, you will only use them to tell time. I´ve owned, and still do so many G´s, Mudmasters, Mudman, Rangemans etc...But everytime i look at Luminox watches i fall in love. Are they really worth it ? Do they look small on the wrist ? Thanks.

    • @TheMaineiacguy
      @TheMaineiacguy  4 роки тому +8

      In my opinion, yes these watches are definitely worth the cost. I've now had mine for a couple years and they are still going strong. No, they don't appear small on the wrist but they are much lower profile and, due to the carbon fiber ( carbonox) used in many of the models, they also feel much lighter on the wrist as well. As I say in the video, you'll never hear me say anything bad about Gshocks as they are great watches but I am definitely a luminox guy now. These two Luminox's have been great to me and I live them both. Good luck, and thanks for watching the video my friend.

    I've had 3 luminox watches. And I actually do like them, but.... for the price you pay for them, they can be a lot more durable. The first one I had, the minute hand fell off. The band had to be replaced a few times also. Those rubber bands are crap. The second watch, band issues again. I'm on my third luminox and same thing with the rubber band, sooo I got a NATO strap. I bought 3 of the 3000 series, one yellow, one red , one orange . The orange one stopped working after 2 years, replaced the battery and still a no go . The yellow and red work after 2 battery replacements over the years I have owned them , but the bands are broke, I think they use cheap materials on there bands. So the next thing is they use tritium for illumination and it has a max life of 4-5 years of illumination then it’s just an arm peace .. in reality Luminox is a 50.00 dollar watch at best .. I am going to put new bands on the yellow and red one and taking them to the pawn shop , hopefully I can get some money out of them

      @TheMaineiacguy  4 роки тому

      Dang, what a bummer, especially for a 300 or so dollar purchase a piece. Fingers crossed that mine hold up. They are still going strong. And tritium has a half life of 12.3 years so the vials should be visible for about 24 years before they completely die. Same basic deal with any tritium weapon sights. Take care, and best of luck. I'm sure you'll be able to sell them as they seem to be increasing in price even for the older ones.

      Thanks for the input. I believe the battery life is supposed to be 4 to 5 years. About the same as most of your average watch life. Also I believe the watches use Swiss quartz movement which is known the world over for being very accurate. I synced mine when I set the time on both of them and as to what I can tell they haven't gained or lost any time at all as of yet. Hope this helps.

    No watch is waterproof, fyi. The cases are not carbon fibre; Carbonox consists of carbon long bars or carbon powder in varying percentages depending on the model, which is fired in a kiln until hardened. They are not stronger than steel, only six times lighter in weight. I have an assortment of professional divers, and Luminox timepieces that do not feature screw-down crowns or pushers and screw-down case backs are not to be trusted in water. Of course, swimming in a pool, or at the beach is certainly within the wheelhouse of these models you have. However, accidentally actuating a pusher, or snagging a crown while in water, is a death stroke for the Ronda movement contained within the case.
    Be careful not to drop them, due to the propensity for the tubes to unseat themselves and even shatter within the case. It, sadly, happens all the time. Having said all that, I own a Luminox 3580 BO, so I don't want you to think I'm just trolling the brand.

    Water proof vs water resistant is not a marketing thing. Water proof means it won't let any water in, in such cases as you have demonstrated with the water bowl. On the other hand, water resistant means they can take a dive i.e. handle the water preasure when diving, in order to keep their water proof while under. ;)

    • @TheMaineiacguy
      @TheMaineiacguy  5 років тому

      Well, these are marketed as dive watches and a few folks have done videos of SCBA diving with the Navy Seal Colomarks (which these are). That being the case, I was curious about the "water resistant to 200 meters" tag and that's just what I found in researching it.

    • @domi69ify
      @domi69ify 5 років тому +1

      Watches aren't marketed as waterproof because they will never technically be completely waterproof. If your "waterproof" watch is subjected to deep enough water, or especially depth and the additional forces of being moved around, the watch's waterproofing will fail. Just because it's referred to as water resistant doesnt mean it can't remain waterproof to a reasonable depth. If you actually dive you might know that these shouldn't be used as a true dive watch. However, I own two Luminox and love them. I can wear them in basically any water I want and never have to worry about them. Shower, easy. Pool, no problem. Body surfing, still not worried a bit. If I can be in any depth of water naturally I'm not worried. Past that though I would.

    • @TheMaineiacguy
      @TheMaineiacguy  5 років тому

      @@domi69ify and yet even if you look up their $1,000 or $690 dive watches they're still only rated as WATER RESISTANT to 500 meters. These the metal ones that are advertised specifically for diving. Not that it really amounts to much for me as, you say, I'm not a diver ( though there are a couple videos out there of people SCBA diving with these same watches).While I spend a lot of time in the ocean I don't dive. Most of my torture testing has to do with extreme cold, the shock of climbing mountains, the shock of shooting, and tactical type situations at work, swimming,etc. For these things, I have never had so much as a hiccup with these watches. Anyhow, thanks for the comments and have an amazing day.

    • @caflet2009
      @caflet2009 3 роки тому +1

      So a 200 meter dive watch is not a proper dive watch, and just some clarification on resistance vs "water proof". Something might be 100% waterproof at surface pressure, but leak at 5 or 10 meters. So water resistance is always contingent on depth and corresponding pressure. 300M or more is a proper dive watch for recreational scuba. This is because if you slap your wrist down hard on the surface, jet skiing for instance, you could easily exceed the water resistant ability of a lesser watch. So they need to be overbuilt to some degree. Again, conventional wisdom is 300M or greater of resistance is a dive watch. For something marketed as "search and rescue" with some exposure to water at shallow depths, a 200M watch is appropriate. Cheers

The tritium having a lifespan of 25yrs as they say, it would then be difficult to be buying without any knowledge how long has the watch been out, maybe by the time u bought it, it has been on stock for about 5 to 10yrs so giving u only 10 to 15yrs maybe left on tritiums life, so would d price still be reasonable? Thinking of having it replaced and spending on it again or might even be adviced to buy a new one once the tritium goes dead.

When buying online weather eBay or Amazon I think the biggest trigger is if they're too cheap if you have an $800 watch that's for sale for $99 chances are it's not real if you have a $500 watch that's for sale for 200 all you're doing is buying the watch from a warehouse instead of the storefront

The Luminox I believe will be a much lighter watch for you and definitely offers great protection from the water. I have swam with mine in the ocean as well as streams and ponds and never once have I had a problem with it not being 100% waterproof for me. I guess to be honest even though the citizen is a decent watch in my opinion given the choice and assuming that it's going to be more of an operational watch and less of a dress watch I personally would go with the Luminox but that's just me.

      @@adrot2937 thats always the safest way, though a lot more expensive. There are also authorized sellers like some jewelers and even sporting goods stores like Cabelas/ Bass pro. You can't be too careful when buying something like this. It would stink spending a hundred plus bucks, thinking you have the real deal, and then thinking the brand is junk when something breaks. When really for another couple hundred bucks you get the real deal made to last. Good luck my friend and thanks again so very much for watching.

    Are the bad reviews that are usually seen on Lumiy due to someone buying a knock off? I really like the look of the Luminox but am undecided. I currently wear a G-shock that I picked for it's simplicity and look. I don't like a watch that has lots of features that I'll never use.

    • @TheMaineiacguy
      @TheMaineiacguy  5 років тому +2

      Yeah I've often wondered the same thing. As I said in the video and then several comments you'll never hear me knock a G-Shock. They are solid and well-built watch and have lasted me for years. I really do love the two Luminox watches that I bought though. They are lighter and smaller on my wrist than the G-Shock and have stood up to every bit of abuse that I have needed them to while wearing them on duty for the past year or so. The mineral crystal glass hasn't picked up so much as a scratch and certainly hasn't broken and they've proven to be both waterproof as well as at least so far surviving decent amounts of shock. I've only had them for about a year so I can't say that they have passed the test of time for me yet but so far it's looking pretty good. I would say without reservation if you are thinking about it give one a try😀

      That´s my point. I love G-Shock. But i´m saying and i said it before. They are full of features that almost no one uses. I have a G 9300 Mudman for 9 years and used the compass for a real situation once. Everyone can make a compass with any analog watch.

    This 2 watch are not divers watch. 200m water resistant not mean divers. Watch should be ISO rated for diving, this 2 are not. I like look, but i never would pay that price of plastic quartz watch, because that what it is. They just call plastic with different names. Luminox have steel automatics, that make sens to me.

    • @TheMaineiacguy
      @TheMaineiacguy  5 років тому +1

      As I understand it they have a proprietary material that they use called carbonox. True a lot of their bands are basically glorified rubber but as far as the carbonox, it is a type of carbon fiber which is actually several times harder than steel. They make everything from firearms outer barrels 2 bicycle frames out of the stuff. It's a lot more than just a plastic. Typically gear made of carbon fiber is very expensive due to its innovative lightweight and near indestructibility. And as far as diving goes I'm not a diver just a swimmer so I don't see me going any deeper than a couple hundred meters. I've seen those other ones that you were talking about but while those things have a whopping price tag. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

      G-Shock guy here. I haven´t tried Luminox yet, but i love the way they look. They indeed look badass and adult. I love their "simplicity". I´ve owned and still own G-Shocks full of cool features that me and almost anyone will ever use. A lot of people complaint here that Luminox are expensive and look cheap, yet they spend 300 or more in plastic G-Shocks.
