    The pronunciation of the (German) name "Holzhausen" would be Holtzhausen. In German, the "z" is pronounced as "tz" or "ts"
    A tip for your firewood bunker. Get some tensile wire and tie the tops of your opposing t-posts together with that, That way you prevent the posts from bending out, and you can fill the bunker higher to a peak to improve rain shedding. Chris from "in the woodyard uses that tensile wire to keep his pallets from falling outwards, so it does work. I agree that the fence on the inside should be the stronger solution.

    Posts are much stronger one direction than the other direction because of the difference in tensile strength and compression strength.
    If the posts bend they need to be closer together or slanted inwards or braced with a tension wire.

    • @FoothillsFirewood
      @FoothillsFirewood  Місяць тому +1

      @@jakebredthauer5100 thanks Jake! When you say one direction, which direction are you referring to? I assume the traditional way where the posts are on the inside? My posts aren’t bending at all just some bowing on the netting (mainly because I didn’t pull it tight enough. With this application my posts felt like the strongest point and the attached fencing always felt like the weak link which is why I built this one this way. More posts would surely be better but at 7 dollars a post and over 100 for a 100 ft roll of fencing these bunkers can add up quick!

    • @jakebredthauer5100
      @jakebredthauer5100 Місяць тому

      Those posts are called T-posts and they are much weaker than wooden posts. Posts are always put on the outside of the wire so when the animals push on the fence they don't pop the staples out as fast.
      If you push on a post the front of the post is in tension and the rear of the post is in compression. The knobby side has more material to resist the tension.
      Why not just use pallets for the side and no posts? IN THE WOODYARD does it like that (UA-cam). Chris uses wire to tie pallets to each other and another wire for a brace inside the bunker (diagonal). I would put the vertical pallet on top of the floor pallet so the vertical pallet does not rot as much.
      The pallets on the ground should be overlapped a little bit to give more airspace for ventilation. Keep the bottom fence wire 6 inches off the ground so it does not get rusty as quickly. There is no reason to set it on the ground.
      Another method you could use is the wire mesh you have with wooden posts tied to the pallet for the bottom and a wire brace at the top. You could cut parts of a tree to make these posts much more cheaply instead of purchasing. Also this method would avoid making holes in the ground.
      To fasten a wire around a post I recommended this method.
      1. Go around and over the wire and up next to the post (inside the loop). The wire will be pointed up.
      2. Pull the end of The wire away from the post, over the wire so it is pointing down.
      3. Bend it under the other wire that is going away from the post. Keep bending just one turn. The wire will be bent back and horizontal. It may not look good to you but don't do anything else. Just try it.
      These three simple bends will tighten a little bit when the load is applied but they will not unwrap. I think 12 gauge wire would be strong enough for the brace and other uses.
      What I mean by a wire brace is a wire from the top of the post down to a pallet inside. The pile of wood holds the pallet up one direction and the wire holds the pallet up the other direction.

    • @FoothillsFirewood
      @FoothillsFirewood  Місяць тому +1

      @ yes these tposts 20 years ago were about 3 dollars but fwd two decades and it can get pricey! Pallets are a very cheap idea but the main reason they work so well for Chris ITW is because he is in the plains up in Michigan. If you look at where his bunkers are built and turn the camera 360 degrees you can’t see a single tree line. He gets nothing but wind and sun all day long. His drying conditions are completely different than mine. I’m 20 feet off a tree line while I definitely agree that not stacking wood is a pretty smart thing for most people a lot of people saying that it will mold in the center are saying that because it does for them where they’re at. Pallets up front wasn’t exactly the aesthetic I was going for but above all else it would have decreased air flow compared to this fencing, which is something I have to worry about that Chris does not!
      As far as tension and compression go I can’t see anything I’m using these for (mainly wood) ever bend one of these tposts no matter how it’s placed but what you’re saying definitely makes sense in regard to the rigidity of the post.
      And yeah with a pallet wall you would definitely have to run a wire brace but with tposts I’ve never had to do that. I hammer these things almost 2 Ft in the ground with a driver and since I’ve made the one in the backyard, those posts haven’t budged, bulged or bowed. Only flexing or bulging comes from the netting that just isn’t pulled tight when wrapping the fence. I’ll see what gauge wires I was using initially to tie the fencing to the tposts before I got annoyed with it and switched to these zip ties. They’re cheap and they’ve held a massive heap in my backyard with zero issue!

      Climate is a big factor in the growth of fungus. If your climate is warm and wet you may be in trouble. Other people may have already done the experimenting.
      Another plan that may work better to reduce the risk of molding is to use that welded wire mesh in a circle on a pallet. Let the wood drop in there loose. It will dry better loose and in smaller containers.
      Vertical pallets inside the pile would increase ventilation and not affect aesthetics. If the pallets were put on concrete blocks instead of on the ground, that would increase ventilation.

    • @FoothillsFirewood
      @FoothillsFirewood  Місяць тому +1

      @ vertical pallets inside is an excellent idea and you’re absolutely right, you’d never even see them. I live in North Carolina so it’s hot here but not super wet. My oak bunker in the back has been doing well thus far but only time will tell. It’s definitely a learning curve that is very specific to one’s climate.

      @@roadking8337 hey Roadking. I think the camera angles as well as the way the wood is laying is probably just playing mind tricks, I cut all my wood with a marker (either the perfect stick or the mingo marker) to 16 inches. Out of that entire pile you may find 50-100 pieces that are 15 inches and you may find 50-100 pieces that are 17 inches. My margin for error is +\- 1 inch, but by and large 95% of my splits are 16 inches. My woodstove will hold up to 24 inches and the people I sell to I tell them 16inches plus or minus an inch. Anybody that needs it smaller than than 15 is going to have to ask for a custom cut. Thanks for the comment!
