Just FYI, Brighton is in the South of England. They’re currently based in Glasgow in Scotland (a different country with slightly different rules). So this is a HUGE move and hundreds of miles away, to a different country. Even if people are remote I would’ve thought they’re probably north based.
Scot goth here. I'm not a really a Killstar fan. I'm 51, it's too young for me and they have questionable practices. They were bought over by a private equity group a few years back, as far as I can work out the bigwigs are in the US and Glasgow was just the original base. Not sure what prompted the move to Brighton, possibly cheaper for shipping from the south coast of England.
Very disappointed in this latest behaviour. It's literally the opposite end of the UK. People have lives and families, you can't just up and go during a recession and the rental market is insane. Private equity companies DGAF though, they buy folk out and do what they want.
Scotland is not a different country in the sense of living and relocating in any way. Same passport. Still UK.

@@izzy6455 A passport is irrelevant. It's asking people to give up their lives, houses, leave family and relocate 300 miles away. People have mortgages, family responsibilities, schools. Housing, both rental and mortgaged, is insanely expensive in Brighton compared to Scotland. Yes, it's still UK but it's a life changing upheaval that they didn't choose.

It's the rinse and repeat cycle. You don't have to say anything for zoomers to shit on you for doing anything or just existing. Foy ou know what it's like to be shit on by kids younger then you and having people older then you blaming you for the things that generations younger then you are doing. Millennials got the short end of the stick, and still have it.
Edit: I'd like to add this in, that's not how the world or fashion works. Especially fashion, styles come back into and out of fashion. People like to dress in Edwardian era clothing, some people love 80s, Some love the styles of 50s and 60s. They will forever be defined by the era that originated in. You also just can't turn off time. Why should an adult have to be bullied out of saying yeh those are clothes I used to wear when I was your age. Most people don't give a shit you're wearing what we grew up with, the point is that you don't have to be an asshole about it.

I learned and worked in wholesales and foreign trades and sadly: None of Killstar's actions is uncommon. So no, they are no black sheep in that business. You don't have to dig deep to find something disgusting in business owners as persons, some are pretty open racists, elitists or just arrogant a**holes that regard themselves as better and treat workers like s***.
Another sad truth is: If you want genuinely ethically produced products of good quality, you have to pay, and I mean it... A simple dress made with organic materials by a fair paid tailor -> a few hundred €. Most people don't have that money, and that's how capitalism works: Produce a lot of poor c*ap by underpaid workers for poor underpaid workers that can't afford otherwise.
The art theft thing is also pretty common. Some just call it "inspiration". If the artwork is altered enough, it legally doesn't go as a copy anymore. It's also not always possible for a company to check that good if and where their designers are "inspired". Maybe some of those remote workers are designers. Sometimes the designers aren't even working for the company but freelancers who just sell their artwork.
I think it's okay if you buy somewhere where the product's quality meets your expectations and the price is within your possibilities. If you want to, you could frame EVERY company negatively, and it wouldn't even require much research.
We all have to dress for ourselves, for warmth, protection and happiness. And we all have to dress for work. I have some hand-sewn linnen dresses for reenactment, but no workplace would want to see me in them, trust me 😂 I also don't have the money to order my whole wardrobe from an organic local company. And I will never have the skill to sew a jacket or a victorian dress, let's be honest here. Overlock sewing machines also are pretty expensive and even some talented hand-sewers can't handle them.
Brighton is so expensive to live in very hard to find a studio/1 bed flat for less than £1000pcm let alone share houses

Cool video. I still wear the items I bought a long time, but I was done with them because they stole one of my tarot's art works, I had on Instagram. It was a painting, but they altered it and made it black and white when I saw that I couldn't give them any more money. I do both DIY and buy from alternative clothing sites I'm more on the vintage goth rocker, punk metal side and never personally saw a problem doing both. None of this surprises me.

They've stolen art from quite a few artists over the years! The clothing used to be good, but now it's so low quality, that you're lucky to get more than one wear out of things;

It’s like a soft firing, instead of paying redundancy payments they just want people to voluntarily quit and not have to pay them. This should be illegal to change the job description /flexibility arrangement to be worse off since hired. Even though they offered redundancy an an option, the whole culture will be negatively affected and will cause others that stay on to think about leaving soon too

I'm allergic to polyester, most hoodies are a poly/cotton blend, so I was very happy and excited when I read the description of one of KillStar's hoodies on their website and saw that it was 100% cotton. I bought it and when it came in the mail, the care instructions tag said that the lining of the hoodie was 100% cotton and the rest of it was a poly/cotton blend. I was angry, but I wrote about it as politely as I possibly could when I gave feedback on my order. I was even more angry when I checked the website maybe a month later and the hoodie was still described as being 100% cotton. Thank you for making this video, it was both a relief and also mildly soul crushing to know that I'm not the only one who has given feedback to a company that actually doesn't care about their customers, responding to their automated "your feedback will be greatly appreciated" emails are a complete waste of time.
nobody makes 100% cotton stuff. hard to care and more expensive. if you are allergic you should have double checked.

Killstar is overpriced for the quality. Dolls Kill has a white supremacist as the owner. Other than thrifting, there's TONS of other places you can shop. I have a whole list. The only downside is that it's pricey but the massive upside is that you can feel good about what you're wearing. Also, I'm so jealous of anyone who knows how to make their own clothes by using patterns. You're god tier.

But I think this last news with their staff was mybe the end.
I prefered the old Killstar, when it was more quality (even if they already back then had big issues with for an example sizing. And they still have it today!) than fast fashion.
I gonna share this, cause it's lots of elements now talking against supporting them.
Plus I should also reacted the same, if my company should want to force me move from my part of country to the opposite side to keep my work.

Are they even offering a bonus to offset the moving expenses and passport fees and flight costs etc etc?? It’s not even just coming into the office - it’s moving away from everyone and everything to a completely new country! To a high rent overpopulated high demand touristy area where it’s extremely difficult and expensive to find housing… on what salary?? Killstar pays rates for their employees to live in Brighton? It’s ridiculous. It’s an excuse to downsize and lay people off without paying due restitution for unemployment. It is exploitation of a loophole in labor laws and workers rights.

I have a cute Gothic purse from Kill star and I bought it because it had witchy vibes and I really like the way that it looked it’s still held up pretty much solid. I’ve had purses in the past that don’t last long much at all.
Also we need an extra months rent for the previous tenancy AND at least a months rent up front for the new place, PLUS a deposit. I dont know about the US but in the UK its b100dy RIDICULOUS 😫
I used to buy a lot from Killstar, but I'm officially giving them up now. I was already starting to get a bit uncomfortable with the fast-fashiony direction they seemed to be going in, along with the lack of transparency about their supply chain, but this vile treatment of their employees is the last straw for me. I wasn't aware of the other things you spoke about, but those just further cement my decision to stay away from them now. Thank you!

Killstar uses a ton of plastic in their vegan clothing. It wears out quick and then sits in a landfill forever and it's a waste of money. If one can't use leather, things like waxed canvas are a better alternative than plastic clothing, and it can be maintained for your lifetime, like a high quality leather.
So disappointing.😔

This sucks and i disapprove, but as a plus size girlie there isn't too many choices where to shop. Even those brands that have some larger sizes still manufacture in Asia/China and run small. Also, i'm avoiding duties an taxes as much as i can. I'm not from the US.

I just hope these people can quickly find a new job, they deserve better than this. Unless the job description specifies that relocation may be required, PRIOR to applying for the job, and reiterated during interviews etc, NO ONE should be forced to move away and change their home life completely.
This has no consideration for people's circumstances. People have families, some people have friends and family members who are dependant on them being near by, some people have already worked a lifetime to earn enough to turn their house, into their home. whether you're part of a big family, a young couple or a single adult, you should not be expected to pack your home life up, for your income. Work life balance is very important, please find an employer who has respect for that.

They dont have the black lipstick anymore. They come out with too much at once, and need to downsize I feel. It a good wear for every day spiritual types like me, I like killstar, but the added import charges are also outrageous lately. I just buy a bit ,and that's it. People love the killstar look. I think in 2016 when it went mainstream in 2016 the copies were also big, and I tons of fakes all over the internet. I agree, killstar should limit some output of merch .Its too much at once. There use to be a few items. As for the vegan it peels very easily. I don't recommend the vegan.
It’s true they do steal art from artists which is crap. I’ve heard before about ethical problems. But cutting remote employees is just business. At least they were offered the option to stay with company. Not a big deal, unfortunately. It is what it is and isn’t unusual or unethical. Sorry.🤷♀️
I can't speak to the ethical/racism stuff, but in small businesses like this, you don't usually get hired for a single position, you're expected to help out where needed, in this case the hybrid model would be because you're going to be helping box and ship merch 2-3 days a week, then doing what you were hired for the rest of the time. They probably hired too many remote workers when business was good, now that we're in a recession they've got to pretty much restructure their whole system.

When a business does that, its understood by experienced workers to mean poor organization structure and similarly fragmented hiring practices. That is not what the scope of 'helping out where needed' is meant to a reasonable person or well organized and trained company. HR, CSR, and warehouse fulfillment are VERY different roles.

They’ve had a lot of controversies that are really bad, like the racism and the thefts. But I don’t really think this one is as bad. A company need to do what it has to when it comes to economics and positions. Yes, people were hired as remote but that doesn’t mean their position will exist forever like with any other position. The company has probably realised the remote work model isn’t working for them and their type of business. I think it’d be fair to offer these employees the hybrid position but many of them will probably not be able to relocate.

Killstar are not unusual. This is what happens in business. Having to relocate etc. Nothing new. Horrible but thats life im affraid. Sometimes bad things happen. No its not saying they have to move... thisakes me so cross. They jave contracts employers can change and will say either this job is ended but you could keep a job by moving. Other wise they would have NO job. Honestly. Killstar could have just fired everyone but they have tried to offer current workers employment. Should they offer an apology for trying to keep jobs? It is right. Its normal. Difficult to find work? YES! Thats why they are offering a different option. If they dont do this it could be a situation where the whole company goes. There are plenty of bad things that happen by compnies ...just suddenly changed their mind? Its a Business! There are more imporrant business issues to worry about than some normal restructuring.
Albeit the police officer Chauvin went too far, St. George Floyd would have lived longer only by doing even ONE of the following things: not try to use counterfeit money after the shopkeeper told him it´s not actual money, but he did, and hence cometh the police. Then don´t do drugs, or at least don´t swallow enough to kill you when the police is called after you insisted on using counterfeit money. But he did, so next, don´t resist the arrest (whilst the fentanyl is taking over causing respitatory problems, which you have even without opiods) and screw around with it. There is the whole video about it available. Hard to say if they could´ve saved Mr. Floyd even if he didn´t resist the arrest and they immediately knew he had that much fentanyl and other stuff in him and called an ambulance, but probably not. Most, if not all of the BLM -money is gone, "leaders" having bought themselves luxury houses and such, $ billions of damages for the riots that were based on a lie, plus all the dead people, and the destruction of society where truly idiotic people thought that the individual police officers and them alone was the problem. Defund the police definately showswhere it´s been done.
So Killstar virtue signalling through BLM is wasted effort. The idea might be beautiful, but the execution is, and has been, corrupt from the beginning. But I´d never heard of Killstar before, so there is something new every day!
