  • In 1862, the U.S. Navy attempted to capture Richmond by water for the first, and only time. This failed attack all but guaranteed that the Civil War would be decided on land, not by water.
Produced for our Richmond Battle App, join Park Ranger Mike Gorman as he speaks on the significance of Drewry's Bluff.

Two of my ancestors were behind the guns at Drewry's Bluff. Thank you for the clear explanation.

Very interesting. The interesting point about the loss of the C.S.A.Virginia was President Lincoln had been down the Potomac River on a tugboat reviewing the situation. Yes, the Commander in Chief on the front line. A Confederate cavalry patrol fired on the tug prompting Lincoln to ask if a detail of U. S. Army could be put ashore to chase the Confederates which led to the U. S. ARMY capturing the C.S.A. Virginia.

I think you are a bit confused. The Potomac River is in Northern Virginia. In May 1862 President Lincoln was aboard USRC “Miami” and directed naval and land operations against Norfolk, which were successfully carried out. He also was involved with the actions against Sewell’s Point. Lincoln’s flagship was the “Miami,” which operated in the Hampton Roads, James River, and Willoughby Bay. Lincoln went ashore at Fort Monroe, Hampton, and Oceanview while he was in the Tidewater region in 1862. The CSS “Virginia” was not captured, but was blown up off Craney Island by her crew on May 11 after the capture of her home port Norfolk by the Federals on May 10. Very few artifacts remain of the “Virginia.”
