  • Garry Adelman of the American Battlefield Trust is joined by Bobby Krick of the National Park Service to give an in-depth overview of the Battle of Haw's Shop, a cavalry action which followed the events at North Anna as Ulysses S. Grant attempted to keep pressure on Robert E. Lee's Army during the Overland Campaign of 1864.
This video was originally made for American Battlefield Trust Color Bearer members and is now available for our entire UA-cam audience!

    Well done chaps. Very informative.
Development on such sacred land, is deplorable.

Two of my great-great uncles, Joseph and Samuel Siegfried, had joined the 6th Ohio Cavalry in March '64 as teenagers (the younger one lying about his age). Just months later they were both shot in action at Haw's Shop. I'll have to go an see where they were wounded before that hallowed ground is a field of McMansions.

Thank you very much for trying to literally save part of my family’s history and possibly my last untouched view of his battle field death . Progress VS History what a dilemma for all to consider. I hope the new home owners know they are living on sacred ground and pay some tribute to our past struggles for freedom . Soldier on BFT your doing great work. Thank You !

I had 2 relatives (brothers Thomas Crago and James Crago) who fought here for the 1st PA. James died in this battle, and within a month, Thomas was captured and sent to Andersonville prison camp where he died. I was fortunate to visit here in 10/2023 before too much of the area is developed.

I’ve been here. There are graves almost right up next to the walls of the church!

My relative Alexander McClure with Company C, Michigan 6th Cav. Was killed at Haw’s Shop. His brother Nathan also with the 6th survived the war that began for them at Gettysburg. I’ve looked at the battlefield on google maps / earth and at one time I saw a note east of the farm house that said Second Union Cemetery. Do either of you know of any marker for where the union soldiers were buried?

such a shame to lose a genuine battlefield to housing. but wait a minute..who would want to buy a house sitting on 700 graves? your house will have zero resell value.

It makes little sense to do 10 acre tracts with 400-500k homes on it. What a shame

Very sad that it will be lost. Is there any plans to do any archeology work before building and moving the confederate graves on that portion of the battlefield?

Yep, that’s Studley Rd today. I live about a mile down the road from the battlefield, right by the crossroads they mentioned. There are four houses in that field today, with several more going up

I understand, not trying to stall anything, but for right or wrong reasons, men suffered incredibly for a cause they may or may not have totally understood but felt a sense of duty. Southerners protecting their land, wife’s, daughters and families. North likely defending a novel experiment. As I said, 12 years of my life in Richmond, there is land. This is likely money, money can do this. Anyway, appreciate ur comment Randy, please don’t take mine the wrong way. No offense at all meant by it, just my opinion.
