Even Paul was at war with his flesh. The people that cry out lord lord and Jesus says I never knew you, those people are the ones who boast in the good things they do. The good news is that Jesus accepts you as you are. Repent of your unbelief and believe. The book of John mentions time after time, believe and you will be saved. Never once does John say you must repent of your sins.

I think John 6:29 is the key here. There Jesus says “This is THE work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” Everything starts with believing that God sent/came in Jesus in the flesh. Nothing good can be done without first believing in Jesus. This is the truth Jesus spoke.

Repentance from unbelief to believe is NOT works, because it's faith. Repentance and turning from all your sins is very hard work that we do every day... or does this just come naturally to you? Turning from sins is definitely hard work, and this Professor here doesn't get it, don't listen to him, and not to John McArthur either.

Speaking from experience, falling from grace. Like Paul said I know what I would do but do what I would not, I paraphrase. I was walking with the Lord and like David I fell flat on myself! Oh how I grieved God and my spirit, it was almost like being possessed. Thankfully I was convicted in the spirit and He once again turned me around and back into His arms. My prayer for all of you is that you NEVER have to go through this. Be strong in the Lord Jesus Christ and trust in HIM. AMEN

Jesus did not die for Satan and demons, he died for us. Satan and demons are eternally damned so the gospel has no effect on them whatsoever. Jesus said what the will of the father is in John 6:39-40, which is that people would believe in Jesus. Lordship Salvation is not the Gospel.

"If you have the indwelling spirit and are lead by the Spirit you will be obedient by faith to walk in the Ways of Truth that leads to Eternal Life in The Son.
1 Cor 5:1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
1Co 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
This believer was committing incest, but Paul says kick him out of the church so his spirit could be saved.
Not all believers will have works. That is why there are some vessels of honor and dishonor.
These verses disprove your works for salvation. I am not debating this issue.

    • @JesusPaidItAll
      @JesusPaidItAll 4 роки тому +14

The book of John is written to believers first of all, so it's not written about salvation. You don't have to look much further than than the first chapter to find the context, fellowship. It is mentioned 4 times in the span of 10 verses. If you look before the the verse you quoted in 1 John 2, you will see who John is addressing. He calls them "My little children" to show, once again, he is talking to believers. You're ignoring the clear context of these verses to promote your false, works for salvation. That is very disingenuous. If a *believer* confesses to know Christ, but walks in darkness (sin) they don't know Christ. That doesn't mean God doesn't know them.
A believer can commit all kids of sin. Look at 1 Cor 5, you have a saved brother sleeping with his fathers wife and in verse 5 Paul says "To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus." Notice that his spirit could still be saved. But you would be quick to say a person like this was unsaved. What about King David who committed adultery and murder? He was saved. What about Lot who lived in Sodom and Gomorrah and committed incest? He was saved. Here is what the Bible says about him.
      2Pe 2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
2Pe 2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
2Pe 2:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
2Pe 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
He was righteous, just...a saved person. He didn't have any works to show for his life. He is a picture of a believer who wasted his life and was saved just as by fire (1 Cor 3:15). And this begs the question, who are these people who are saved as by fire, who have all their works burned up? And please explain the purpose of gifts, if every time a person sins God removes their salvation. Also, please explain the purpose of chastening. Why would God discipline his children if he removed their salvation every time they messed up. Furthermore, please explain the prodigal son who was a picture of a son (saved) who rebelled. Why didn't God cast him out because of his sin? Why did God accept him back? He was at the lowest point in his life, eating pig slop.
Obedience has to do with a person's walk (sanctification) not their salvation. You have clearly been deceived or misled by a false teacher.

@Chelley Hall read your comment. Your right. Easy believism is actually a hypocritical position, they believe if God expects anything of a believer, then according to them it's no longer a free gift, and that's adding works to salvation. The reason why its hypocrisy is because they know we all will be perfectly sinless in heaven, so therefore even 'they' themselves believe 'ALL' christians will walk in righteousness. And thereby their argument is invalid. Do you understand my point?
Also Malachi of the bible seems to me, the whole book is a condemnation of those thinking in the style of easy believism. Starting with such expression as "if i be father where is my honor, if i master, where is my fear?"

Thank you for this teaching on this issue. I've been a born again Christian for over 50 years, and just recently heard of Lordship Salvation. As I read the comments here, I can see how its permeated the thinking of people calling themselves Christians, and its sad to see deception and lies so readily accepted as truth. To say you are a Believer, yet refuse to call Jesus "Lord" is foolish and shows lack of Holy Spirit leading, making me wonder if they are saved at all. When you are born again, you want to serve the Lord, please Him with your actions and thoughts, humble yourself to His sovereignty, turn away...repent...from sinful behavior, and recognize that God has provided us with salvation with the promise of eternal life with Him through the sacrificial blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ. To say you "believe" but refuse to follow and obey His commands is the most prideful, self-righteous, arrogant attitude any person could have. I would expect that from an atheist, but not from some one that calls his/herself a Christian. Being self-deceived because of refusal to see the truth when its very clearly presented in the Bible is a choice that will be punished. Its called blasphemy...that is in the Bible. If anyone wants to call that adding to the Gospel, or a "work", then you just haven't read the Bible at all, and if you did, you did it without the help of the Holy Spirit, and if that's the case, you aren't saved, because when one is born again, they receive the Holy Spirit.

This is why Lordship Salvationists are fruit inspectors. They always expect someone to do these things, otherwise they'll say: "That person is not saved!" They do not leave place for babes in Christ. They never judge themselves, but always others, looking at people's works. Giving the fact that you say anyone that believes but does not follow and obey God's commandments is "prideful, self-righteous and arrogant", I'll assume you're a prideful, self-righteous and arrogant man. You have sinned, you did not obey and follow God. Does that hurt you? Until you apply your own judgment to yourself, you'll be blind but your own self-righteousness. Because you are blind right now. Since you're defending Lordship Salvation, I'll say you're not saved. Any person who believes you have to "repent from your sins" for salvation is not saved. So, kindly I suggest you, to trust on Jesus 100%, for that he died on the cross, was buried and resurrected for your sins, that he paid the price for every of your sins, and trust on that alone.

The confused gospel: You’re not saved by your works, but without works you’re not saved. Preachers like this mix grace and works and make grace of no effect. My prayer is that we may rest in the finished work of Jesus, knowing we possess life eternal. This man says we look at our lives to see if God has transformed our desires. It’s literally the difference between keeping your eyes on Jesus and His finished work, and upon your own achievements. Lordship salvation is another gospel, and it’s accursed.

I disagree. What he is preaching is what the book of 1 John tells us. We know that we know Christ if we keep His commandments. It is the same thing Jesus said in John 15 to the disciples, that their fruit bearing would Glorify the Father and prove themselves disciples. Please check out what I referenced because I think it would benefit you.
We are saved by grace through faith, and true salvation will produce good fruits, good works, as a (super)natural result of the Holy Spirit working in us. These works are not being done to make myself saved, they are done because as Phil. 2:12-13 says, God is working in us both to wills and work for His good pleasure.
      God bless!

Lordship Salvation is a theological construct proposed by those who see the dangers of "saying a quick prayer" without having any belief. This is why they love to throw around the straw-man called "Easy Believism" (which is ALSO a theological construct). The problem is that Lordship Salvation invariably leans on a physical (i.e. carnal?) need to prove salvation through good works.
I cannot judge Dr. Barnett's heart, but I can say this: ANYONE WHO BASES THEIR SALVATION ON GOOD WORKS IS NOT SAVED (Gal 1:6-9, Eph 2:8-9; Titus 3:5-7). Do I want to do good works? Yes. Do I want to bring forth fruits of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23)? Absolutely! Is my desire to make Jesus Christ Lord over every single aspect of my life and being??? Without a doubt. But my salvation: my hope and glory is BASED ENTIRELY on the FINISHED WORK OF JESUS CHRIST ALONE, and not on my good works! We are not justified by our works, but by GRACE ALONE (Rom. 3:24; 3:28; Titus 2:11; 3:7). ANYONE who teaches otherwise, may the Lord rebuke them.

Lordship Salvation, means that we recognize Him for who He is and give Him the honor that He is due by surrendering to Him in obedience. He has earned it; He is worthy of it. Ultimately, this is how our walk with Christ should begin, by recognizing and confessing that He is Lord. This is how salvation is obtained, by this very recognition.

@@2Chronicles714_ If this is all Lordship Salvation entailed there would be no disputing, but MacArthur and his disciples don't stop there. Back when I first read JM's book back in the 80s, I agreed with it. I thought just as you did. But when you study out their train of reasoning boils down to the belief that if Jesus Christ is not Lord OF ALL, He is not Lord AT ALL. And this is nothing more than Sinless Perfectionism. Query, do you still sin? If you say "No," you make God a liar (1 Jon 1:8). If you believe in Sinless Perfection, then Paul wrote Romans as a Lost Person (Rom. 7:18-24). Lordship Salvation is nothing more than a way for Nicolaitans to feel superior over the masses.

So you buy into the so-called free grace movement that started in the 1980's by Charles Ryrie and Zane Hodges who "rewrote" in essence much of scripture that, completely moved away from repenting of sin, the teaching priority of Jesus,John the Baptist Peter and Paul in essence creating a license to sin with the promise of simply believing at one point, and the promise of eternal life regardless of how you live?
The perfect laws of God that we couldn't keep so Jesus died and rose again as our sacrifice. Now suddenly we're told since we are under Grace we shouldn't even want to obey God's law or even walk in Holiness,
because doing so now is considered works.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace ye are saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the GIFT of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. True believers have nothing to boast in because we did nothing for it. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
What do you have to do for a free gift? Romans 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but BELIEVE on Him who justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
What happens when we believe on Jesus as the only way of salvation plus nothing. Romans 4:6-8 He imputes His righteousness to us, and will no more impute sin to our account. All our sin debt past, present, and future sins are paid. We can no longer be condemned. John 3:18.
All works based salvation is false. We can only be saved by what Jesus did for us plus nothing. Romans 11:6 It is all grace, not works, no man can save himself.
Matthew 7:21-23 Many will come before me on that day and boast in all their good works. But, Jesus said, they never did the will of my Father. What is the will of His Father? John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent me, that ALL that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
How long does everlasting life last? Forever. First John 2:2 And He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. But only those who believe it are saved.
John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that BELIEVETH on me, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE. Jesus can not lie.
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the children of God, EVEN TO THEM THAT BELIEVE ON HIS NAME.
First John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that BELIEVE on the name of the Son of God, that ye may KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. Jesus never gave any one temporary life, or probationary life. Only eternal life, and we only have to do one thing to receive the free Gift. Just believe Jesus paid our sin debt in full, and we can never be condemned again. If salvation is not a free gift, then it is not the salvation of the bible.
Repent means to turn from what you were trusting in to save you, your works, to trusting in what Jesus did to save you, His finished work on the cross as full payment for all our sin debt.

Our works can not save sinners which we all are. Romans 3:23 and Romans 3:9-10.
The un righteous are trusting in their own works to save themselves. Matthew 7:21-23, They never did the will of His Father in Heaven. John 6:40 and John 6:29. If good works and keeping the law would save sinners, then Jesus died in vain. Galatians 2:21

If we continue to live in those sins named after we have received the free gift of eternal life, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit, born again, Ephesians 1:13-14, God does chasten His children. First Corinthians 5:5 You can lose your life, and your rewards in heaven, but not eternal life. First Corinthians 3:15. That would make God a liar. John 5:24 John 3:16. First John 2:2. And the gospel. First Corinthians 15:1-4. We are all sinners to a degree because we are not perfect yet in the flesh. It is only our soul/spirit that is saved.
First John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. Gods word, not mine. John 3:16. If you say that is not true, then you are calling God a liar. John 3:18. John 6:47. John 10:28-29. Double eternal security.

You need to study up a bit before trying to explain lordship salvation, my friend. You completely misrepresented it. May I suggest listening to Pastor Charles Stanley, one of the primary proponents of what you call "easy believism". He teaches that anyone who believes that Jesus died and rose from the dead for the forgiveness of sin will be saved, that repentance is nice, but is not necessary for salvation. To "repent" means to change ones path. The path that is being changed when one accepts Christ is that they are no long non-believers. Being a non-believer is what they repented of. Anyone who thinks that there is one bit more to it is a prisoner of pride and is trying to earn their way to heaven. God will change the heart of the truly saved, but many of them will continue to sin. No one will get to heaven because they sin less than the guy who lives next door to them. It's all about Jesus, not about us.

Salvation, meaning regeneration, is solely the work of the Sovereign Lord toward His elect, and everyone else is just discussing conversion, or being saved to the knowledge of the truth in this life. Conflating regeneration with conversion is what leads to confusion. confessing belief, repentance, etc., per the gospel is toward conversion. One can only be converted if one has first been regenerated. Anything else is a works based salvation, and we bring nothing to the table.

I think you are confusing the deference between Old Testament repentance and New Testament repentance. The Old Testament people were under a different system. To an Old Testament person repentance would mean to go back to following the law they were given. Repentance in the context of the New Testament means that they have to return to faith. Faith is the trust, belief, and acceptance of God. You cant just know that God exists. Many Deists believe that God exists. You have to know and trust the correct God. That is proper faith according to the New Testament. When it says a New Testament person should repent it doesnt mean keep the Old Testament Laws. When it says a New Testament person should repent it means they should go back to being faithful.

I'm not suggesting you're a proponent of "easy believism," but actually, if you're interested, 1 John ch 2 says "both" of those things you mentioned *work together* to bring us assurance of salvation. So it's not one or the other. Please know that I'm not being hostile towards you, and I'd like to hear your reply to this. It says:
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye *sin not.* (Definitely proof of a born-again, transformed, supernaturally empowered life) And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: (Definitely, His righteousness is ours, through our trust in Him and His Finished work)
2 And *he is the propitiation for our sins:* And not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world.
(Definitely His finished work takes away our sins)
3 And *hereby* we do know that we know him, *if* we keep his commandments. (Again, a transformed life and a *conditional* assurance of salvation)
4 He that saith, "I know him," and keepeth not his commandments, is a *liar,* and the truth is not in him.
(Definitely "easy believism" defined! I'm not saying you're defending that, just making a point)
5 But whoso *keepeth* his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: *hereby* know we that we are in him.
(God working in our hearts to *transform* us brings the assurance of our salvation. We keep His word because
we trust in Him and His finished work *alone.* So again, it's both. See?)
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked .
(Definitely a transformed life made possible by trusting *only* in Him and His finished work)
It's not a huge issue, but that passage came to mind when I read your comment. I praise God that you know you're *both* saved *and* transformed! Probably more transformed than I am at this point! I'm definitely not totally without sin but I know I've overcome a lot of it since Jesus saved me and I'm not the same as I was before Him. God bless you!

He sounds a lot like a Catholic. Boasting of works, at 12:41 he invents a new gospel where he says if you believe and follow to "some" degree.... he is really confused, how much do we have to follow? how many sins are we allowed to do where people like this think we are still saved? Which sin breaks the deal? They can't answer it. They see a problem of people saying they are saved but living, in their minds, in un-godly lives, and they assume they are not saved. He also uses some strange argument that even Satan believes therefore we must do more? Why, is he saying we are like Satan? We are fallen angels? very strange, no matter how they try to hide it, Lordship salvation is doing works to prove you are saved. The verse he quotes fits Lordship cult to a "T", Matthew 7:21, many people will do works and wonder why they are not in heaven...

Adhering to the "Saved by grace alone" or "Just believe" doctrine while throwing all the other verses out the window is a pretty gutsy move.
That would tell me that the apostle Paul was going around, preaching a gospel that goes beyond "faith alone". Paul said in Galatians 1:9 that everyone is accursed that preaches another gospel than the one he preached.
Taking only Acts 16:30-31 as the entirety of the bible would tell us that no repentance of any kind is needed for salvation.
Acts 16:30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
In addition, only the person asking what he needed to do to be saved would need to "believe". This infers that the rest of his household could be complete atheists, yet would be saved.
Are we having a contest to water down the Word of God until it has absolutely no effect?
If so, the entire population of earth should read ONLY Titus 3:5 and see that Jesus already saved us by His mercy and we don't have to do a single thing.
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost
If we take this one verse literally, without reading any other in the bible, one could come to the conclusion that:
    1) They don't even need to "Believe in Jesus" to be saved, because this verse doesn't say anything about belief.
    2) They don't need to hear the Word
    3) They don't need to read the Word
    3) No relationship with God/Jesus/Holy Spirit is needed.
    4) Hell is completely empty because everyone already got saved by His "mercy".
    5) Sin as much as you want to, because repentance (to turn away from sin) wasn't specifically mentioned in this verse, either.
If this is the case, then ask yourself: Why is there even a judgment of man (Revelation 20:12-15)? Why is there a Gospel? And why is there even a Bible?
It's as if we one has come to the point of saying, "Sorry God, but I'm not going to obey Your Gospel because, after all, obeying is a work."
If one is going to take the "minimalist" doctrine to the nth degree, then you should end up with something similar to the above.
Take this approach and you will eventually find out that God is NOT playing around. He will not be mocked and ignored. In flaming fire, God will take vengeance on those that do not know Him and do not obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9).
The Word of God commands us to make our calling and election "sure", not "minimal" (2 Peter 1:10). It also instructs us to study the word to show ourselves approved (2 Timothy 2:15).
The best policy is to read the ENTIRE Word of God for yourself to find out what the TRUE DOCTRINE and TRUE GOSPEL really is and then OBEY that gospel. If you are genuinely seeking God on this topic, He will most definitely fill in the blanks on any questions you have. All you have to do is ask Him in sincerity.
When the disciples preached the Gospel, what did the hearers of that Gospel actually do?
    1) They repented.
    2) They got baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins.
    3) They received the Promise of the Father - The baptism of the Holy Ghost.
If a person truly BELIEVES the gospel, they will OBEY the gospel. In addition, once that individual experiences the grip of sin unravelling and being removed from their life and the POWER of the Holy Ghost living inside, they will NOT be ashamed of that gospel, even as Paul declared in Romans 1:16.
God provided the plan of salvation for all men, women and children when He was under no obligation to do so. This is the very demonstration of His grace and mercy.
Arguing against Lordship salvation is not the issue here. The real problem is that one can argue so hard against works that they take it over the edge and completely IGNORE and therefore REJECT the instructions given from the Gospel, stating that those are works as well. THIS IS DECEPTION OF THE HIGHEST ORDER.
Do yourself a HUGE favor. Don't take reckless chances with your salvation. OBEY the TRUE GOSPEL.

he believes salvation is not the gift but faith is a gift, obvioisly its not easy because not every one believes the gospel by grace through faith in christ alone, people want to be fruit inspectors but what people should be is root inspectors and inspect who and what they are trusting in for salvation, the Corithian church whom Paul calls BRETHRENS they were fully CARNAL on milk and not food, The book of hebrews Paul says you ought to be teachers, yes they were not growing, this lordship salvation leaves no room for a prodigal son which we read in scripture as one who can take his INHERETANCE here, we are justified by FAITH in the lord Jesus . The gospel of John theres no word repent do you know why because if you believe you have REPENTED, an unbeliever cannot repent until he hears the gospel and is convicted of unbelief John 16 " OF SIN BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE NOT ON ME"

the problem is you believe something other than believing is necessary for salvation, this is a false teaching,
let's look at the Ethiopian EUNICH in Acts 8
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him
the bottom line is you guys want to be God's and judge who "TRULY" Believes, Peter in Acts 10 preached the gospel to Cornelius and those who heard were saved ill use you own words "TRULY BELIEVED. YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH BELIEVING BECAUSE YOU BELIEVE IT IS SOMETHING MORE THAT IS NEEDED AND THAT'S THE NEED FOR WORKS, JESUS IS LORD WE DONT MAKE HIM LORD,
I YOU BELIEVE IN THE LORD JESUS YOU ARE SAVED ITS NOT EASY BELIEVISM ITS CALL FAITH OR BELIEVISM.
BE BLESSED IN CHRIST BLESSED NAME AND REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL GOD BLESS YOU.
WHEN SOMEONE BELIEVES HE IS TRUSTING IN CHRIST ALONE , HIS FAITH IS IN CHRIST NOT HIMSELF,
GOD DEALS WITH THOSE WHO ARE DISOBEDIENT AND YOU CAN READ THE COVENENT BETWEEN THE FATHER AND SON PSALM 89: 27-36
27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
28 My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.
29 His seed also will I make to endurefor ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
    30 If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;
31 If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; note

I agree with you, there is nothing we can do to earn salvation, Jesus did it all on the cross of calvary! However the evidence of Gods redeeming power should be clearly in our life. Philippians 2: 12-13 If you are a believer in Christ Jesus you will no longer desire the works of the flesh. Faith without works is dead. Abraham was counted righteous not by works of the flesh but by faithfulness to God. Easy believism says I can believe in Christ and live according to my flesh, this is heretical teaching. Paul said clearly where sin abounds grace abounds all the more. Can I go on sinning, certainly not.

If we abide in Christ we will produce fruit, fruit unto salvation. Meaning the Holy Spirit by the gifts and fuit of the spirit working in us. Not by anything we do. Ephesians 2:10. The doctrine of regeneration has been lost in the modern day church and largely replaced with hyper grace teaching. Lordship salvation is salvation by works and not grace. It is a counterfeit gospel that we can save ourselves and Jesus died in vain. Matthew 7:21-23 They trusted in their works, but never did the will of His Father in heaven. John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent me, that ALL that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise Him up on the last day.
Easy believism is salvation by grace. Would you rather have hard believism? John 6:47 Verily, verily I say unto you, he that BELIEVETH on me, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE.
First John 2:2 And He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. But, only those who have believed it are saved. First Timothy 2:4 Who would have all men be saved and come unto the knowledge of the TRUTH.
Romans1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, (First Corinthians 15:1-4) for it is the power of God unto salvation, to every one that BELIEVETH, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Making Jesus Lord of your life never saved one person. We are saved by believing Jesus finished work on the cross plus nothing. Not our works. God will not accept our works. Only Jesus works can save sinners which we all are. First John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the TRUTH is not in us.

So he says: saved by works...he is talking about discipleship, not salvation. You cannot add or take away from what Christ did on that cross. This is typical Lordship salvation teaching that brings condemnation for those in Christ, if you are counting on your behavior to get and keep you saved, you are robbing Christ of the blood atonement that he did for his creation at Calvary. I believe this to be heresy and will keep many from becoming truly born again and becoming one spirit with God. How you become unborn? What sin will it be that will make God pull the salvation carpet from underneath you? You can be born again and still live in complete rebellion against God and his word, you will not grow spiritually and will suffer his chastisement and live with the consequences of your sin but then God is lying when he says He will never leave you nor forsake you and nothing can tear you from the hand of Christ. Let God be true and every man a liar!

So, Mr. Professor, please don't be condemning "Easy Believism", because that is exactly the Biblical salvation that God has for us. It's not that hard: I'm a sinner, He's the Savior, I believe on Him, He saves me. That wasn't so hard, right? You're making the Gospel difficult by asking a complete change of life, which is separate. Justification and sanctification are not the same, nor do they go hand in hand. @@charleshughes1141 The word "repent" in the context of salvation means turning from unbelief to belief, not turning from all of your sins. If we had to turn from our sins to be saved, we'd all be going to hell. The Apostle Paul himself said that he is carnal and sold under sin (Romans 7:14). Was he not saved? Turning from sin is something that every believer should be doing daily, but it has nothing to do with salvation. Salvation is a free gift, and has to be received as such. Remember the Bible telling us that we have to receive it like a child? A child doesn't get confused on Christmas morning; a child rips open the present and receives the gift. We adults make salvation complicated and want to pay for it by our good behavior. The "will of the Father" is to believe on Christ (as found in John 6:40). Again I'm exactly repeating my previous. Sharpen your pencil, friend! You can get the Bible to say anything you want by ripping verses out of context. Discipleship and obedience is God's will, but not a requirement for salvation. Don't you go banking your salvation on your level of obedience. If you were honest, you'd admit that you're still a sinner unworthy of heaven. For all of you who doesn't repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ through faith alone, then you need to self exam yourself, because you are a new creation in Christ, the old self is dead than the new is alive. This why Jesus died for us because of sin. We need to repent. I am not a Calvinist nor I believe that we don't struggle with sin. We have to deny ourselves everyday and live for the Lord. Our works will not get us to heaven. But the evidence of works through faith, our fruits will show us being in the process of on going sanctification.

Sorry but this is not a fair evaluation. Repentance means a "turning", but not necessarily a turning from sin. In the Bible, God repented many times, as He changed His mind. Obviously God doesn't have to repent of sin, because He doesn't have any. Repentance unto salvation is changing from unbelief to belief, not turning from all your sins. That's where Lordship Salvation is wrong, and very sad that this man doesn't even mention that. Unbelievers "must" turn from their unbelief to be saved. Believers "should" turn from their sins, but not to get them saved, nor to prove their salvation. But to be blessed in this life, and to add works as a reward in heaven. That "new creation" is a spiritual birth, and by imputation of the righteousness of Christ are we as saints before God, even if we don't live like saints. Furthermore, "the will of the Father" can be read in John 6:40. Read it please. Don't be turned from the SIMPLICITY that's in Christ! It's by faith alone, not by turning over a new leaf. All in all a very poor analysis, Mr. Professor!

It was amazing to hear this speaker sound authoritative and yet be so wrong. First, he strips "free gift," from the gospel by his works based theology. He also scans over popular texts like Luke 3:19 and others. What was the context of 3:19? It wasn't about repentance "of sins," but rather, repentance regarding the Lord. Changing their minds and believing Him to be the the Messiah and placing their trust in Him. He also mentions Romans 10:9-10 but sadly turns it into a works passage. The word, "confess," in the Greek means to "be in agreement with." Paul is saying that if you're in agreement that Jesus is Lord (in other words the Son of God) and believe in your heart the Gospel message, namely, that our hope of salvation is found in Jesus, you'll be saved. It's basically believing and trusting in Jesus for salvation.
Paul describes the repentance well in Acts 20:21, "solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ." It was not a repentance of sins, but rather a "repentance toward God." A change of mind regarding God. Why in the entire book of John that was written to bring people to Jesus is there not one mention of repentance? It was only trust in Jesus! It's because repentance and belief were used interchangeably, basically meaning the same thing or at the very least overlapping.
This is the danger of a well respected teacher who sounds professional, confident and sure of himself: he can merely convince his audience on his demeanor and style.
Then I couldn't believe that he used Matthew 7:21-23, "21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’" Somehow he had changed this into a works passage, but what does it really say?
First this discussion will happen on "that day." What day? Probably meaning the day of the Great White Throne judgement as found in Revelation 20. What will be their defense on that day? "We prophesied in Your Name, cast out demons, perform many miracles..." So what is their line of defense to be admitted into the Lord's kingdom? It's all the things they did. They weren't saying, "I trusted in Jesus, the Son of God." What is this "will" that Jesus spoke about? Notice John 6:40, " For this is the WILL of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” This passage, rather than making the presenter's case, defeats it!
He speaks about being a "new creation." That is true, John speaks of this in 1 John. Paul speaks of the struggle between the flesh and the spirit in Romans 7. What is the "new creation." That is the part of us that Christ has made pure, sinless and holy, otherwise, we could never be saved. This doesn't describe our fleshly nature, but certainly our righteous one (new creation).
He also misquotes a passage in James. He mentions the demons believing and shuttering. He says it's in chapter one, however, it's in chapter two. What he fails to mention or perhaps doesn't know is that demons can't be saved, for Jesus didn't die for them. They have no hope even if they changed! Plus, this comment was probably made by the one arguing with James as James presents this hypothetical figure who is debating with him. Remember there are no quotations, periods, etc. in the Greek, so it's up to the translators to guess where it might be placed.
He mentions Acts 26:18 "to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’" He gives his own spin on this passage based upon his theology, but what does the verse really say? "...turn from darkness to light..." This is not involving works or anything akin to it. How are they in darkness? They are blinded to the saving knowledge of Jesus. Who is the light? Jesus! They are saved by "faith in Me."
I guess when you deny Jesus' words that salvation is a "free gift," for those that believe and begin adding works, it's easy to read things into these verses that isn't there.

Awesome teaching, brother John. We are saved by faith alone, but so many people (Christians) want to stay in their sins (sinful lifestyles). They aren’t saved but only turning the grace of God unto lasciviousness, as you stated. If there is no repentance from dead works, there is no salvation. Repent and believe are instructions number one and two out of the mouths of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ at the very start of His ministry. And these also top the list of the doctrines of Jesus Christ Paul wrote in the beginning of Hebrews chapter six. Repentance is not a work. It is rest from the works of the flesh where the wages thereof is only death.

Lordship salvation is religious damnation. It tells you that Jesus' sacrifice and obedience was not enough to save you, but that you need to complement His perfect righteousness with your filthy righteousness.
Jesus paid it all, and He said IT'S FINISHED. Your part is to believe on Him. From the very moment you do that you are instantly justified and redeemed with God. The gospel is easy and simple. Never let anyone take away the simplicity of the gospel with adding of requirements to your faith.
All God's requirements are once for all fulfilled by Jesus when He died for our sins and rose from the dead!

preamble : if you have doubts about what is the condition for salvation,
-> look at the thief on the cross : he believed while dying
-> look at mary magdeleine : she wept on Christ's feet and He responded :
    Luke 7:48-50
48 And he said unto her, *Thy sins are forgiven.* 49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? 50 And he said to the woman, *Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.*
*Thy sins are forgiven, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.*
    nothing more.
    1) Lordship salvation is method for people to backdoor their works into the salvation condition.
    2) Repentance is the baptism of repentance of John the baptism : it occurs before salvation, it is repentance toward God, and away from self righteousness. If you don't repent from this, then you can't understand you need a savior.
    3) What is the will of the Father?
    *John **6:38**-40*
*38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. 39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.*
What is not doing the will of the Father?
From John 6:38-40, the will of the Father is believing people are saved by believing in Christ. So not doing his will is NOT believing people are saved by believing in Christ.
    *Matthew **7:21*
*21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.*
This is talking about people who think they are saved, and are denied entrance to God's kingdom : and the first thing they talk about is their works! and ask why can't they enter!
This passage is talking about work-salvationists, who were never saved : *"v.23 I never knew you"* : meaning you were never in the body of Christ. And they work iniquity because their sins are still on them : not washed away by Christ's blood, by believing in Him for salvation.
    4) *Nahum 1:7 "The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him."*
The ones known by God are those who trust in Him.

You miss understand the what it means to believe in Jesus. Easy believism doesn't teach to believe in Jesus, because it teaches to accept the gift and not the giver. To accept Jesus as ticket to eternal life, but to reject him as Lord, that's NOT believing in him.
Truly accepting Jesus is to appreciate him in such a way as to which he becomes the greatest treasure of the heart. Then, what God places in the heart comes out in the life (fruit). Every tree that bears not fruit, is cast into the fire. As for the thief on the cross, he showed fruit through his words.

James 2:17 clarifies that "faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." This indicates that genuine faith necessarily produces good works as its fruit. Free Grace Theology undermines this by suggesting that a one-time intellectual belief is sufficient, irrespective of a person's subsequent actions or lack thereof. Within Lordship Salvation, good works and repentance are seen as necessary results of genuine faith, though these works do not save but follow naturally after salvation.

Seems to me that we diligently look for or create issues to argue about. We don't fight against flesh and blood, but spiritual powers, and it is clear that the goal for them is to divide the house so it will fall. We're split into so many factions that the unity , one love, one purpose one mind and one accord is out of focus so badly. We spend our time in accusing one another, criticizing , condemning and judging one another, that one would think we're enemies instead of members of the body of Christ. What we believe is absolutely vital because God's Word is absolutely true-- there is one truth with many applications, so some body is right on an issue and another is wrong, but at our absolute wisest as humans, we are foolish before our God. I'm writing this without an answer, but I'm lodging my complaint just the same. My bottom line is prayers for Father to open blind eyes to see, clean out wax impacted ears to hear, and vainglorious hearts to be broken to pieces so that understanding of God's truth can prevail. Doctrinal purity is not an abstract command-- there is no wiggle room on doctrine-- the problem is not there, it is with the prideful, deceitful human heart that refuses to accept God's truth as it is written. Mankind's interpretation of the Word, based on human logic, sense of fairness and independent life, has no bearing on truth as God declares it to be in His Word! As disciples of Christ, we owe Him our total submission in obedience, in service, and the developing of our relationship with Him through the study of His Word with understanding. As Christians, we are accountable to Him as well as to each other. Prayer for His universal body is the best remedy I think is possible.

Helping the poor, visiting the sick..etc. Salvation happens the moment one puts their trust in Jesus Christ alone as Savior! That's why Matthew starts with the regal lineage of Christ, proving that Christ was the seed of David. The rest of Christ's teachings were related to living under his reign. Because most rejected him save a few hundred or so, the Davidic promise is now in abeyance until the Jews are again restored. Why was Herod trying to kill Christ? Because Herod was afraid of the competition.

Jesus tells us in verse 21 why these people who believed they were saved were simply deceived. They were trusting in what they did, instead of what Jesus did for us. They were trusting in their works, instead of Jesus finished work. No man can do anything to save himself. We can only be saved by what Jesus did plus nothing. Romans 11:6 You can not add law/works to grace,. They can not mix. Jesus said in verse 21, they never did the will of my Father. What is the will of His Father. John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent me, that all that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise Him up on the last day. EASYBELIEVISM.
John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE. How a person lives after they have believed, and been sealed by the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 1:13, has absolutely nothing to do with whether they are given the free gift of eternal life. I we were saved by anything we do, our works, then Jesus died for no reason.
Salvation is Jesus plus nothing. No works. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the Gift of God is eternal life. What do you have to do to receive a free GIFT? Nothing. Romans 4:5 But to the one that worketh not, but believe on Him who justifieth the ungdodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. You only have to do one thing to be saved. Accept the free gift of salvation by grace plus nothing. It is free, and that is the only way we can accept the GIFT.
Ephesians 2:8-8 For by grace ye are saved, (what Jesus did for us ) through faith, (when we believe it) and that not of yourselves, (we did nothing for it) it is the GIFT of God, NOT OF WORKS, lest any man should boast. Free Gift.
John 3:16 Is true. Whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. We can not add what we do to what He has already done. That is blasphemy. That is saying that what He did is not good enough, to save us, and now we must do something to finish what He failed to do. You can not add works to grace. We can only be saved by what He did plus nothing.
Jesus plus nothing equals salvation by grace without works. We have to be as righteous as God to go to heaven. An no one is. romans 3:10 But the good news is, when we trust in Jesus alone plus nothing, He imputes His perfect righteousness to us, and will no longer impute sin to our account. Romans 4:6-8
Romans 8-9 Without the Spirit there is no salvation. With the Spirit we have eternal life. It happens the minute we trust Jesus alone apart from any works. Romans 3:21-23.
Following Jesus never saved one person. Repenting of sin is no where in the new testament. Turning from sin to God saves no one. Only one thing. Believe plus nothing to be saved. IT has to be free or not at all.
How we live after we are saved is for rewards or lack of rewards in heaven. Our works after we are saved. Or if we go off and live in sin we will reap what we sow, but John 6:37, He will never cast us out. Hebrews 13:5 He will never leave us or forsake
Sorry I took so much space, but Jesus said, many are trusting in what they do to save themselves, but have never done the will of His Father. Repent means to change your mind from trusting in any thing we do trusting only in what HE did for us plus nothing Romans 11:6

Lordship salvation is the most counterfeit gospel ever devised by men. It is salvation by works instead of all grace. Salvation by works never works. The problem is, it sounds right, but is deadly. They twist scriptures to make salvation by something we do instead of what Jesus did for us. They mix salvation with discipleship. They put the cart before the horse. No one ever got saved by making Jesus Lord of their life. No one ever got saved by becoming a disciple of Christ. We have to be saved first, and then follow Jesus for rewards or chastening but will go to heaven no matter what we do or do not do. Our works can not add to Jesus finished work.
Jesus said, depart from me ye that work iniquity, I never knew you. Not I did know you and now I don't, I never knew you. Until we believe that all our sin debt is paid in full, First John 2:2, and know that we can never be condemned again, John 3:18 We are not saved.
First Corinthians 5:5 Turn such a one over to Satan, to kill the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved In the day of the Lord. This born again believer was sleeping with his fathers wife. He was about to lose his life, and his rewards he could have had, but the man was still saved. Eternal life is forever and God can not lie. John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me HATH EVERLASTING LIFE. But it has to be Jesus alone by faith alone plus nothing of ourselves.
First John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that BELIEVE, on the name of the Son of God, that ye may KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. AMAZING GRACE, JESUS PAID IT ALL AND WE PAID 0. IT IS FREE.

John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent me, that ALL that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up on the last day. John 6:29. Jesus, answered, and said unto them, this is the work of God, that ye believe on the one He has sent.
Our best works could never save a sinner. Romans 6:23 for the penalty of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. The GIFT of God is eternal life. Not faith. Not a reward for good behavior, but a free gift. Paid in full by the giver.
Romans 3:26-28. There will be no boasting in heaven. They were boasting in their own works. Not the finished work of Jesus on the cross apart from works. Romans 4:5.
Romans 6:23 For the penalty for sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life. The GIFT of God is eternal life because no one can earn it.
But, you keep calling God a liar. Jesus said, John 6:47. You say that is not true. Gods word says it is true. You just do not believe it. Jesus said, verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me hath everlasting life. But you say Jesus is a liar. When you say you do not believe what He said, then you are saying Jesus is a liar.
John 3:18. Once again although you will never believe it and be saved. Repent. Go from unbelief to belief. John 3:18. And you do not believe trusting Jesus saves us.
Look. I am tired of your lying and filthy unbelief. You want to go to hell? Then that is where you will go. John 3:18. All unbelievers will go to hell. Guaranteed. And you are an unbeliever. You have never trusted Jesus as the only way of salvation by grace.
You said trusting In Jesus never saved anyone. Ephesians 1:13 says trusting in Jesus is the only way.
God has given you every chance to accept His free gift of eternal life. But you will not. I have no hope for you. John 3:18. At least you know where you are going when you die. To hell. I have eternal life now. First John 5:13. And you don't. Romans 6:23 The free gift of God is eternal life. But you will not accept the gift.

Here is the real answer to this question, and it's not complex : Romans 10:8-9 "But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt *_believe in thine heart_* that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved". The key here is to 'believe in your heart" - if you do, your spiritual nature will receive the Holy Spirit, and your salvation is sealed for all eternity. Those who truly believe in their heart, will, however, do the will of the Father, even though they will still sin, for the indwelling Holy Spirit will cause them to. Hence, when Jesus said "not every ...., but he who does the will of the Father", he was referring to those who don't truly believe in their heart.

Romans 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Repentance for salvation is to change your mind, the Greek word metanoia, from trusting in what we do to save us, our works, to trusting in Jesus finished work on the cross as the only way of salvation plus nothing. Romans 6:23 for the wages of sin is death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Repenting of sin saves no one. Turning from sin to God saves no one. keeping the law and doing good works saves no one.
John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent me, that ALL that seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
When we believe the gospel, First Corinthians 15:1-4 We are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, unto the day of redemption. born again, born of God. Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom also AFTER ye believed, (not before) ye were sealed by that Holy Spirit of promise.
We can not be saved by one thing we do or do not do, we can only be saved by what Jesus did for us plus nothing. No works. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace ye are saved, through FAITH, and that not of yourselves, it is the GIFT of God, NOT OF WORKS, lest any man should boast.
The GIFT of God is eternal life. You can not boast in a free gift. If it was not a free gift, no one could be saved. Romans 3:23 All have sinned and come short of the glory of God, All, not some. Romans 3:10 There is none righteous, no not one. So we are all ungodly sinners headed for hell.
But Jesus came down from heaven and paid for the sins of the whole world, so that anyone who would believe he did it for them, He would give them eternal life. First John 2:2.
It is the seal of the Holy Spirit that is our righteousness before God. Romans 4:5-8 But to the one that worketh not, but believeth on Him who justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Blessed is the man to whom the lord imputeth righteousness without works. Blessed is the man who sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
AMAZING GRACE, JESUS PAID IT ALL AND WE PAID 0. IT IS FREE, or not at all.
Lordship salvation is mixing salvation with discipleship. You can not be saved by following Jesus or making Him Lord of your life. You can only be saved by believing He died for all our sins and we can never be condemned again. John 3:18. Unbelievers are condemned already because they have not believed on the name of the Son of God.
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the children of God, even to them that BELIEVE on His name. John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me HATH EVERLASTING LIFE.
First John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that BELIEVE on the name of the Son of God, that ye may KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.
Lordship salvation is discipleship without salvation. It is following Jesus like Judas, but never believing our sin debt has been paid in full and we can never be condemned again. Colossians 2:13 He has forgiven us ALL trespasses.
The thief on the cross did nothing but believe Jesus was who He was who He said He was, and was saved in an instant. Romans 4:5.
John MacArthur, RC Sproul, and all the other Calvinist are preaching a gospel of works, and believe Jesus died in vain. Galatians 2:21. They are Matthew 7:21-23 Boasting in their good works, but have never accepted His free gift of salvation by grace. They have never done the will of His Father. John 6:40 and John 6:29.

For me, Charles Ryrie had been unfairly represented by you in this video. While he may have reacted very strongly to Macarthur, please note that he had written the following in his basic theology acknowledging the necessity of repentance:
    Quote
Repentance means a genuine change of mind that affects the life in some way. Like other significant theological terms, it must be defined specifically by asking a further question, namely, Change the mind about what? Unsaved people can truly repent but without being saved, as, for example, to change the mind about a bad habit and to break that habit as a result... saving repentance has to involve a change of mind about Jesus Christ so that whatever a person thought of Him before, he changes his mind and trusts Him to be his Savior. That is the only kind or content of repentance that saves. However, saving repentance may be preceded by a repentance concerning sin (which activates an individual's sense of need for forgiveness) or a repentance toward God (which alerts him to the fact that he has offended a holy God and therefore needs a way to appease Him). This aspect of repentance is still not saving unless it is accompanied by faith in Christ
    Unquote
Does that sound to you that Ryrie does not believe that repentance is necessary for salvation?
Be that as it may, the theologian that has given the most spot on criticism of lordship salvation is not Charles Ryrie but RT Kendall and I quote him below (from Charisma news):
    Quote
For years, the English Puritans had been my heroes. But that was before I examined them very carefully. These men had in common the belief that a person must be "prepared" for grace before he or she could be truly saved. Such preparation to me smacked of salvation by works.
This widespread teaching is called "lordship salvation." Sadly, those who teach this do not say it means affirming that Jesus is God, which (in my opinion) is what Paul actually means by lordship salvation. They say you cannot claim to have Jesus as your Savior until you first receive Him as Lord. Agreed.
But what does it mean to acknowledge Him as Lord? Does it mean you must obey all His commands before you can be sure you are saved? There are those who virtually put sanctification before salvation as proof you are really saved!
I do not accept this kind of teaching. That is precisely what I was set free from. If I am told I cannot be sure I am saved unless I am always manifesting holiness-good works-that is bondage. I would be looking inside myself day and night to see if I am still saved, checking my spiritual pulse every day, asking, "Am I in, or am I out?"
Puritan teaching encouraged endless and unfulfilled introspection. Whereas the teaching of salvation by true faith set people free, the Puritans raised the question "How do you know you have true faith?" And people were back to square one. The result was that virtually no one knew for sure that he or she had true faith. People were told to look for proofs of faith-loving God's Word; loving the Sabbath; showing "universal obedience," as in keeping all of the Ten Commandments; loving God's ministers and turning away from every known sin. People were afraid they had not come up to the standard whereby one could say they had true faith by turning from every known sin. And the liberty that came with Reformation teaching turned into a new bondage.
The gospel is the Good News that by transferring my trust in good works to what Jesus did on the cross, I will go to heaven and not to hell. I call that Good News. But when I am told I have to add good works to my faith in order to know I have true faith, the "good news" becomes heavy news. Sad news. No joy. No assurance. That is the way I was brought up; it is not what I believe today.
The gospel is frequently misunderstood. One of the main reasons it is misunderstood is because it seems too good to be true-that we are saved by another person's work. That someone else paid our debt. That someone purchased our home in heaven by His own blood. Our natural instinct often tells us that there must be more to it than that. "Where's the catch?" we ask. Yet if the gospel you hear does not seem too good to be true, you probably have not heard it yet.
The gospel is the good news that you will go to heaven when you die-and not to hell-by transferring your trust in your good works to what Jesus Christ the Son of God did for you on the cross.
    Unquote
If Charles Ryrie was still alive today, I reckon he will agree largely with RT Kendall though I may be wrong. RT Kendall likes to ask the congregation from time to time "suppose you are now standing before Jesus right now and He asks you why should I let you into my heaven, what will you say to Him? I have done good works? You are lost! I have obeyed the 10 commandments? You are a liar! I have obeyed the sermon on the mount? You are a greater liar!"
That is a sobering question. What will we say to Him? "we are Christ-like?", "we have the fruits of the spirit?", "we love our brethren?". The answer that an individual gives to Jesus on this question is a reflection whether he is genuinely converted or is a phony false believer!

It's true that the gospel is often misunderstood by well intended believers. And what is even more true is that we're not going to get more clarity until we carefully and fairly present both sides of an issue. In this case, it seems like you're straw manning the "lordship Salvation" view. The fact of the matter is that Jesus in his own teaching presents the gospel in a way that is consonant with lordship salvation. If we're going to better understand how to reconcile this with Grace/liberty, we have to start by taking that conflict seriously

Is it repentance when you go from being an unbeliever to being a believer -from God being your enemy to believing that God loves and has forgiven you? -to change from focusing your eyes on your flesh unto Christ and your identity in Him to transform you into his image? Is it true that sin shall not have dominion over you because you’re not under law but under grace? Is it true that God says he’ll be merciful to your unrighteousness, your sins and Lawless deeds He will remember no more? Or not?

  • @gospelgrace2693

This guy is wrong! Yes, repent does mean "a change of mind" Meaning, we are to change our minds about our way of salvation (trusting in our good works), and put our trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ alone for our salvation! Repent does not mean to stop going down the wrong path then stop and go in the other direction as this guy is saying! If so, then Paul didn't tell the whole truth to the Philippian jailer in Acts 16:31. He said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved and thine house". James Chapter 2 is another book and chapter of the bible that the lordship people love to misquote to try and prove their position. James 2 is speaking of practical righteousness. It's about Service not Salvation! James is written to believers and is about how a believer is to live out their faith for the benefit of others! It is not about Judicial Righteousness (Salvation) like the lordship people like to teach! Matthew 7:21-23 is yet another area in scripture that the lordship people love to misquote. The context of Matthew 7 is found in verse 15 and it speaks of false teachers who were presenting their "works" to God at judgment rather than believing on Jesus Christ alone. Verse 22 confirms this when Jesus says, "Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, Have "WE" not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful "WORKS"? Jesus tells them to depart because they were relying on their works rather than trusting in Him! Verse 21 says: "Not everyone who says to Me Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he that does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter". What is the will of the Father? The will of the Father is that ALL believe on His Son and Him alone for Salvation. According to verse 22, these people were presenting their works to God and make no mention of trusting in Jesus alone as their Savior and their only hope for Salvation! Their focus was on themselves, not Christ! Lordship Salvation and Calvinism teaches works for salvation like Catholicism does. It's wicked teaching and Jesus is speaking to the Lordship Salvationists and any other works-based religion in Matthew 7:21-23! See also Galatians 1:8

1What is Repentance and turning away from sin?
      Jesus said in Luke 24:46-47
He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
What does the Bible say about repentance?
It means a recognition of my sin which involves Godly sorrow and a commitment on my part to change the direction of my life. Repentance is not an emotion. Its more than being grieved or feeling sorry about my sin and even having remorse.
It is making a genuine 180° change of heart recognizing that sin(s) is against God.
After repentance God wants there to be a genuine change of life because living in sin is disobedience and rebellion against God and the end result will be destruction of the soul in hell.
So there must be a change in conduct and how you live.
First John the Baptist came preaching repentance then Jesus's first command was to Repent in Mark 1:15 &
      Matthew 4:17

The Bible is very clear we must repent of sin for the forgiveness of sins. Without the forgiveness of sins one is condemned to spiritual death.
Repenting of sin was required in the Old Testament and the new.
      2 Chronicles 7:14
IF my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sins and heal their land. Turn away from sin for forgiveness. The sacrifice was different.
Jesus died on the cross was buried and rose again as the sacrifice for our sins. That doesn't mean everyone's sins are forgiven.
Jesus,John the Baptist Peter and Paul all said we must repent of sin and believe.
Repent means change your mind about your sinfulled life, all sins including unbelief, false gods, witchcraft self righteousness etc.

      Matthew 11:20
Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because THEY DID NOT REPENT.
      Matthew 9:13

meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous but SINNERS TO REPENTANCE.

Here's another one about repenting of sin.
      Example:
      2Corinthians 12:21kj
And lest when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed.
Clearly repentance is turning from sin.
Peter said we must repent of sin to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit one is not saved.
      Paul said: Acts 17:30
And the times of this ignorance God winked at, but now commandeth all men every where to repent.
Repentance turning from sin - is a prelude to holiness. Walking in holiness begins with repentance. We should think about it as a lifetime daily discipline of our faith , necessary for a holy life.
      None of us are sinless.

I understand we are saved by Grace through faith. I do not accept Lordship salvation. When people come to Jesus and say, Lord, Lord haven't we done all these wonderful things in your name? They are telling Jesus how wonderful they are, when I will say how wonderful You are! They are boasting of their good works but I will not tell Jesus how wonderful I am. That would be salvation by works. Yes I am saved by works. Not my works. But Jesus' works on my behalf.

Who is going to heaven? Dr. Barnett because he is so wonderful? Or me because I look to Jesus and I am grateful that He saved my lost soul. Jesus did not come to condemn the world but that through Him the world might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned but He who believes not on the name of the Son of God is condemned already. John 3:17-18. If you repent, how do you know you forgot one sin to confess and repent? Lordship salvation's requirements are such that everyone is damned to the eternal lake of fire. Jesus said in Matthew, "I did not come to call the righteous but sinners." In Luke he records, "I did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." Matthew just says sinners. It is so easy to be filled with self rather than kneel at the foot of the old rugged cross and be thankful for His precious blood shed on the cross for the remission of sins. I must go elsewhere. God bless.

Metanoia - Mind after the flesh => Miind after the Spirit. Love this guy!!! I just got kicked out of my Church for believing in Lordship! They locked the door on me! Praise God! Romans 6 clearly shows to me that "the old man", "the body of flesh" & "the body of (this) death" was crucified wiith Christ -AND- therefore to the extent that you BELIEVE and appropriate this truth IS the extent that you will become a New Creation in Christ. Everything else is unbelief. Its from faith to faith, glory to glory! Romans 6 is water baptism's typology being fleshed out in the real believer's life.

Interesting talk.. You do explain things well. I'm an evangelist missionary and a qualified anthropologist. I remember being corrected by a follower of Chafer over preaching repentance. It sent me into deeper study of the word. It's kind of amazing how preachers (e.g.. MacArthur) who aren't reaching the masses tend to critique from armchairs. It should give us time to pause. From a mere modern biblical theology ancient historical perspective you can establish how both Lordship salvation and easy believes ARE BOTH AMISS. For example the New Perspective insight of EP Sanders demonstrates that the concept that 2nd Temple Juadism was a WORK-Merit salvation is seriously in error from Augustine... and inherited by Luther. Jews actually believed they were saved by Grace not merited works. So the New Testament combats something else. So the easy believism's works and grace objection to "repentence" as a WORK is false. BUT Lordship Salvation falls into the same trap by making repentance (As in repentance from sin. Changed life) a condition of salvation. It may be more in error.
The ancient Jewish historian Josephus, who wrote at the same time as the gospels of Mathew Mark that talk of repentence'wrote about his encounter with a,leader of Jewish resistance to Rome...Jospheus said to him "I told him to repent and believe in me" remarkably the same words used as.."Tbe Kingdom of heaven is at hand.Repent and believe the gospel" .Josephus meant was for this Jewish revolt leader to give up his revolt venture against the Romans and join Josephus and work with the Romans for survival... rather than engage in a war they couldn't win. Using this ancient insight its more likely Jesus call for repentance in the gospel WAS NOT a call to change one's sinful life in a religious sense as we are accustomed to thinking of the word "repent", but rather calling the Jews to give up their own agenda in bringing in the kingdom of God and believe God's way..the gospel. That no doubt has application but it changes everything!!!!.. It moves the posts and puts Jesus words in a historical context. And that may explain why Johns gospel doesn't even use the word "repent".
Zame Hodges (an easy belivism theologian)has critiqued the view that repent means "a change of mind".. check it out on youtube.
The presupposion of both position in that debate are the same and .modern ancient 2nd Temple research shows that presupposition of law merit and grace is wrong
It's a complicated debate but as an evangelist I think God makes its very easy for ppl to come to Christ but very hard to get away.

What is the one thing that will keep you eternally separated from God?
      Sin.
      Hodges rejected repenting of sin.
No one spoke more about repenting of sin than Jesus Himself.
Jesus's first command when He started His earthly ministry was Repent
      Mark 1:15
The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
      Matthew 4:17
Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.
      Matthew 9:13
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to REPENTANCE.
      Mark 2:17
On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the RIGHTEOUS but SINNERS to REPENTANCE.
      Mark 6:12
They [Disciples] went out and preached that people should REPENT.
      Luke 13:3
I tell you, no! But UNLESS YOU REPENT, YOU TOO WILL ALL PERISH.
      Luke 15:7
I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one SINNER WHO REPENTS than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to REPENT.
      Luke5:32
I came not to call the righteous, but SINNERS TO REPENTANCE.”
      Matthew 11:20
Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because THEY DID NOT REPENT.
      Mark4:12 So that,
they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
      and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn (from sin) and be forgiven!
Jesus's final command for us to do.
      Luke24:47
And REPENTANCE FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS will be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Repent means change your mind about your sinfulled life ALL SINS INCLUDING UNBELIEF,false gods, witchcraft,
      self righteousness etc.

One teaching about grace in the bible is that it is God's incongruous gift...that is very clear. God doesn't look for those who are worthy (by a repentance of all sin) ,a changed life is a fruit of God's grace not a prerequisite.

And those who claimed to know the Lord, isnt they bragged about the works they did, and so Jesus told them I never knew you... Isnt it repentance (turning away from sins) a work, and not of faith? So what is repentance really? Even God repented many times in the Bible, but it never meant that he repented from any sin.

  • @NoOneButJesus

This preacher has it all wrong. Yes, Jesus said not every one who says unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven (Matt. 7:21). But what is the will of God? John 6:40 says "And this is the will of him that sent me, that everyone which seeth the Son, and BELIEVETH on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day." This verse says nothing about repenting, being converted, being baptized, or anything else for salvation except to believe in Christ. Therefore, anything other than believing in Christ for salvation is a WORK! Yes, a change will occur in the life of the believer and repenting, being converted, getting baptized are things a believer must do, but not for salvation.

Amen brother and sadly this man in the video is teaching a wicked false heretical accursed gospel.. Eph 2:8-9 KJV is clear that salvation is a gift given freely to those who have believed the gospel and its not of any works that we have done lest any should boast. Eph 2:10 is clear that we are created in Christ unto good works that we SHOULD walk in them NOT MUST.. This proves that works are not required for salvation and nor are they evidence that one is saved.. Those who obey Gods instructions for right living as a Christian shall bear fruit or good works and God shall reward all that serve him but there are many Christians who are fruitless because they choose not to serve and loss of rewards is all they have to look forward to but never loss of salvation. 1 Cor 3:8-15, 2 Tim 2:20-22, 2 Peter 1:1-9 KJV
If works were required for salvation, then faith in Jesus perfect saving work on the alter of the cross to eternally pay for our sins wasn't sufficient according to the works crowd.

What does it mean to "believe" in Jesus?
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
Abraham believed God, AND showed it by his actions. Ever heard: Actions speak louder than words???
What a man believes will show in how he lives. If one believes that smoking is harmful for his body, he will avoide smokers.
If one believes Jesus when he says, I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. That is an hard saying! But IF you believe him, you WILL repent of your sins.
The measure stick is the law of God and Jesus:
I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
      Thou shalt not kill.
      Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
      Neither shalt thou steal.
Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.
These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Your actions will show the world exactly what you believe. I believe the words of Jesus, therefore, I will walk as he did. And all the glory shall go to God which doeth the work.

Galatians 2:18- 21 Rather, we are sinners if we start rebuilding the old systems I have been destroying, of trying to be saved by keeping Jewish laws, for it was through reading the Scripture that I came to realize that I could never find God's favor by trying---and failing---to obey the laws. I came to realize that acceptance with God comes by believing in Christ: and I myself no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And the real life I now have within this body is a result of my trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I am not one of those who treats Christ's death as meaningless. For if we could be saved by keeping Jewish laws, then there was no reason for Christ to die.
Galatians 4:3-7 And that is the way it was with us before Christ came. We were slaves to Jewish laws and rituals for we thought they could save us. But when the right time came, the time God decided on, he sent his Son, born of a woman, born as a Jew, to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law so that he could adopt us as his very own sons. And because we are his sons God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, so now we can rightly speak of God as our dear Father. Now we are no longer slaves, but God's own sons. And since we are sons, everything he has belongs to us, for that is the way God planned.
Galatians 4:10 You are trying to find favor with God by what you do or don't do on certain days or months or seasons or years. I fear for you. I am afraid that all my hard work for you was worth nothing.
Lordship Salvationists speak of being slaves, which is far short of the truth. We are sons(and daughters). Lordship Salvationists speak of doing this or doing that. The truth is that we only need faith. The Holy Spirit will lead us, mold us and help us in our fight against our still active fleshly half or nature. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control will follow. In time, we bear fruit but fruit bearing follows salvation and is not a requirement of it.
