    Hats off to Pentax for releasing a new film camera. Hopefully other companies will follow suit.

    My first SLR was a Pentax K1000. That was my last Pentax SLR as I decided I needed autofocus when Pentax didn't do AF. So I bought a Canon EOS 630.
    Decades later, I decided my Canon gear was getting a bit heavy, so I bought into Micro Four Thirds cameras. Canon didn't, doesn't do lightweight camera systems.
    I still used a 5Ds, because I am very attached to my four TS-E lenses. However, I can use my Canon lenses with any mirrorless camera, and since my TS-E lenses are all MF, AF is unimportant. The best mirrorless camera, for my photography, is the Lumix S1R. Unless it was the Leica SL2, but that's a bit pricey.
    The S1R enables me to make photos that I could not make with the 5Ds, and that matters to me.
    Still, as the S1R is rumoured to be discontinued, Canikon have no better camera for me.
    And apparently Pentax is banking on the return of the DSLR.

    If film is going to survive till the end of this century we are going to need the manufacturing of new cameras. How long can camera's built in the 20 Century continue to function? The only company continuing to make film camera is Leica, but most of us can't afford them. So, I am happy to see Pentax doing this. I can only hope other manufactures will come back to film. Personally, I would like to see Nikon come back with the F2. Simple and easy mechanical camera to use and you don't need to worry about batteries. thanks for the video

      I agree Michael, I fear the future is bleak for film photography without a new camera that is fairly affordable. At this point maybe I should be saving my pennies for a Leica M6 but that's a lot of pennies 😆

    Not to worry, David , your not alone . What ever I shoot with , needs to be able to produce 13x19 enlargement, if need be. And I've done it with 4mp . I've stopped at 12 mph and 35mm . Thanks KB

    Interesting to hear your opinion after giving it more thought. I still don't feel it's right for me. I do look forward to seeing people's results after it releases.

    I feel you and this is a good video. I too was a bit disappointed. But, I suspect that’s more me than any failing on Pentax’s part. Now I look back at their film camera project videos it’s clear this is obviously aimed at the younger market as you say, but also the younger engineers finding their way. An SLR should be next and that’s what I’m really waiting for, so I suspect anything that isn’t that new SLR will be disappointing for me. Half frame I wasn’t expecting tbh but I can see the merit for Pentax doing it. Well done for standing up and saying you had second thoughts. Respect.

      Thanks Ben, it wouldn't take a lot to get me to switch the brand of film camera I'm currently using, if a company comes out with a new full frame SLR that isn't over $5000 I would have to support that company with my dollars, my fingers are crossed that Pentax is that company, if not, then I will gladly keep using my old gear until it no longer works.

    Hi David, no grovelling required, everyone's opinion is valid. How refreshing to hear a considered review of our own thoughts, even if the conclusion isn't so far from the original. I'm still alert for the forming of the queue, the only caveat, as you say, may be the pricing. Thanks for posting.

    You're absolutely right that it's just about getting your head around making the camera work for you. Will I buy one, highly unlikely as the price point will be much too high for me to justify, but at least a camera company are dipping their toe into the prospect of making film cameras again.
    The big trendy thing at the moment is early fixed lens digital cameras, anything under 10 mpegs with a ccd sensor; funny how fashions change. My first digital was a 9 mpeg no name brand brought from a supermarket, that still works perfectly although its nearing 20 years old.

    Thanks David for your rethink on this subject. I think Pentax Ricoh as a company very often gets panned as a viable company. I used Pentax for many years and was always impressed with their build quality weather sealing and early adoption of an ibis system. They had the loveliest small metal ltd ed primes of highest optical quality. As a company they definitely go there own way , ie remaining dslr primarily. They have put out a monochrome sensor camera very recently and I have recently bought their Ricoh GR3x apsc point and shoot camera which I am thouroughly impressed with. I actually was surprised they didn’t reissue their GRD film version of this camera. Pentax Ricoh have always done their own thing not following the crowd, filling niches and always having a quality product just a little quirky. I really hope they continue their heritage and put a killer lens on this camera. Thanks for your commentary.

      Although my experience with Pentax is not nearly as expansive as yours, I did own the Pentax 645 and later the 645n medium format cameras and absolutely loved using them. I now regret selling the 645n, maybe someday I will get a chance to right that wrong. 😆

    Hi David. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. At the end of the day what we're all commenting (speculatively in fact) on are a few "knowns", and several unknowns. Opinions, likes, dislikes are all personal, and what it might come down to in the end is how the thing is realised, how it feels to operate, the styling of it - whether it feels like part of that nostalgic era or some modern plastic fantastic! Heart vs Head can result in some on the face of it crazy choices. For instance I spent most of my career as a photographer trying to lighten my load, but when I saw that you'd bought a Nikon F4 I got all nostalgic about them, having used (and killed!) them in the past. And over the last few years that same nostalgia has reunited me with a few lumps of heavy metal & glass. Continue to enjoy your journey!

    • @DavidPattonPhotography
      @DavidPattonPhotography  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks, Lol, ya, the F4 is a chunk, I seem to be attracted to beefy cameras, my F5 and Pentax 645 where also part of the chunky nostalgia journey, maybe someday I will come to my senses and purchase an Fm2 or Fm3a 😂

    • @circleofleastconfusion5342
      @circleofleastconfusion5342 4 місяці тому

      @DavidPattonPhotography those chunky cameras feel like they'll go on forever and will proverbially "knock nails in" whatever the truth of the matter. I killed an F4 which fell groundwards off a tripod with a too-quick-release head. The weight of the 300mm f2.8 lens mounted on it bent the camera's lens mount into the mirror box & Nikon wrote it off 😬 The lens was fine.

    • @DavidPattonPhotography
      @DavidPattonPhotography  4 місяці тому +1

      I wouldn't call any of the Nikon pro camera fragile but the lens mount is certainly a point on the camera that should be protected, especially when a 5 pound lens is mounted. 😂 The F4s I was assigned to carry as part of my press kit was a very durable camera but even so I always supported the weight of the lens when it was a 300mm 2.8, I've seen mounts bent because photographers carried their cameras around with the heavy lens just hanging off the camera, I guess it just physics 😂

    Very well put. Pentax owes you nothing. I think it's pretty, Pentax is going to the trouble of making a film camera in 2024. Will I buy it? Maybe. Does show, film is not dead.
    Great video, thanks.

    I still not interested in a half frame camera. Maybe this is a stepping stone to an additional film system? I still would be interested if Pentax made a body to use there older lens. After all this is why the younger people are buying older cameras and developing film. It it different and new to them. Myself I like film to get me out of that digital easy of push the button. Now with the F-100 I have to think if this is the picture I want to get developed and printed by a lab. Only shoot a roll or two a month.
    We got your rain here today in NEPA didn't get out for my walk.

      A half frame camera isn't going to work for everyone, like you I also hope Pentax brings out something else in the future, they have a lot of good glass that would be fun to be able to use.

    Makes me wonder what people would have said if there was never any formal announcements. Pentax just quietly releases a half frame film camera one day. I think what we're seeing is disappointment in the camera everyone dreamed of rather than what was practical for Pentax to pursue. Frankly, I would have been disappointed in a 35mm full frame. After all, if you're going to build a film camera, you might as well go all the way with it and do a new 645 or 67!

  • @7Redbugs

    I agree with everything you say but a half frame SLR like the Olympus Pen F/FT/FV would have been amazing!

    • @lensman5762
      @lensman5762 4 місяці тому

      Why? It didn't do so well when there was no digital, AI, PS or LR, when film was the king as an image recording medium. Only later nostalgia made it popular amongst the newly ' converted ' film photographers. Pentax have this habit of coming up with brillinatly concieved cameras but ultimately useless as the Pentax 110.

    I think that Hoop that you thought they will save film photography I think that that exactly what they doing. Soof with that camera thay will make more and more and more people interesting in film photography, and the next step is to bring a slr, they need to build a new generation to fall in love with film photography, so they can have a lot of people soporting them, like instax film. Instax film is one of the most seller in Amazon and AliExpress .
    We the people who are all ready love film we will need to be patience...

  • @lensman5762

    Personally, I don't think your initial reaction was wrong. I think any new film camera must be able to offer a viable alternative to this madness of digital and now AI. A half frame camera is not the answer. It may compete with a lot of fads like the stuff coming from LOMO or others, but it will not entice anyone to give up or atleast go easy on digital. Personally I think that only two companies do have that ability to come up with a film camera that can be taken seriously, Nikon and to some extent Canon. Leica already have the ' new ' M6.

      I didn't like that I was putting so much importance on this camera announcement, I don't think all my points where wrong but I want to do a better job of trying to be more positive.
