The Case Against Social Media

Almost everyone uses social media and can provide good reasons why. And yet, in recent years, dissatisfaction with these services has grown. In this session,we’ll argue that this unease has more to do with autonomy than benefits. Social media companies have become increasingly effective at engineering addictiveness into their products, leading people to use them far more than they originally intend or think is useful, and causing serious damage to happiness, civility, social well being, and productivity. The solution we propose is a philosophy of “digital minimalism,” in which technology like social media is used much more sparingly and much more intentionally. Addressing these issues are Rana Foroohar, Roger McNamee and Cal Newport.
