I had the honor of getting to meet Mary Tyler Moore back in the summer of 2003 and it was by pure chance, I was 17 at the time and my family and I were vacationing in NYC. On the second to last day of our vacation I decided to explore the city on my own and as I was walking down Madison Avenue I ran into her, I approached her politely introduced myself and I told her that my parents and I were huge fans of hers and that we all watched her show together on Nick at Nite when I was a kid.
She flashed me that famous beautiful smile of hers and thanked me for being a fan, we then talked for 20 minutes or so it was incredible she told me about all the countries she had visited, meeting the pope, funny things that went down behind the scenes on many of the sets she had worked on and how she became the international chairman for diabetes. And I told her about all the challenges I had to overcome growing up with autism and she was genuinely interested, she was so warm kind polite and personable and she was even more beautiful in person.
Before saying goodbye I asked her if I could take a photo of us together and she said sure so I pulled out my 35mm Olympus film camera and took a snapshot of us together, I keep the photo in my traveling/vacation photo album. I then thanked her for her time and for the photo and we shook hands and parted ways it was an awesome experience and it was one of the best days of my life I'll always cherish it, broke my heart when I learned of her passing RIP Ms.Moore you are greatly missed.
Why not just leave stars alone?
Do you think they want to be harassed or have attention drawn to them out in public?
@@kleeamd8274 Excuse me for being a star struck teenager, like I said I politely introduced myself to her and I didn't harass or offend her in anyway shape or from.
@@proudtobeautistic Just because you "politely introduce yourself" doesn't mean you're not intruding on someone's personal/private time.
What if everyone else in the street "politely introduced themself" as well & asked for photos - you don't think that's harassment, or bothering them??
What makes you so special??
How would you like it if you never have a moment of privacy or someone invaded YOUR personal space - especially since most autistic people are uncomfortable with social situations
Then you attract more attention by asking for a photo.
I guess demanding her time wasnt enough, that you felt the need to ask for a photo too
Omg what an amazing story ❤
@@kleeamd8274hey this is a wonderful story. Mary was engaged and gracious as I'm sure she was her entire life. Keep unkind comments to yourself.😮
I had a surreal Mary Tyler Moore encounter in the Minneapolis Airport. We both got of planes at adjacent gates, TV crews descended on her for an interview. While she stood in front of the lights and mic, I watched with a big smile on my face. She and I locked eyes for 5 seconds, and despite a 22 yr diff in age, I was madly in love with her. Who wouldn't have been? She was coincidently there for the show's 20 yr (?) anniversary.
Great story! So miss her.
She has eyes that would be difficult to look away from. Very sensuous yet intimidating.
At 51 I have become hooked on the Mary Tyler Moore show, my goodness such amazing funny content. They do not make tv like that anymore. Thank God for UA-cam! 👍🏼🌟
Her performance in "Ordinary People" was powerful and she rightly could have won the Oscar, but Sissy Spacek, the winner in "Coal Miner's Daughter" was illuminating as well. :-)
I am happy as a clam. Mary Tyler Moore is my favorite comedic actress/talent along with Carol Burnett. Both are/were also excellent at drama. Am spending part of my Saturday with Mary and David. Thanks, Don!
I stayed up late watching the David Letterman Late Night show most nights in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. This video features two legendary entertainers of this time era, David and Mary Tyler Moore. I also watched almost every episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show followed by the Bob Newhart show in the 1970s.
This video is a great collection of her early episodes on the David Lettermen Late Night show. I loved her joke near the end of the video about the name Dick Van Dyke. You should find it to have a good belly laugh. Be sure to watch Part 2 of her appearances on the Letterman show. These episodes are even more entertaining. Mary is like a fine wine that improves with age.
Mary had THE most beautiful smile! RIP, beautiful lady!
She truly was America's Sweetheart. Always loved the chemistry she and Dave had.
I believe Mary always smiled because she knew we loved her. We never tried to hide it.
What a beautiful human
I love MTM !! Her production company brought us Bob & Emily Hartley, Howard Borden, Jerry Robinson, Carol Kester, Mr. Carlin, Mr. Peterson, Mr. Gianelli.... I am forever indebted to her for bringing Bob Newart to the TV masses !!! 😎❤🇺🇸
Don't forget the "St. Elsewhere" gang.
WKRP
And Mary's friends Rhoda, Phillys and Lou Grant.
And Mary's MTM Productions was how we got "WKRP in Cincinnati" as well ;)
Mary and Dave always seemed to have a genuine affection for each other.
Really cool chemistry between the two.
My God she's the absolute best ❤
The day after the 13 Oct 1980 taping, Mary would receive tragic news that her son and only child Richard had died at age 24.
I have copies of all of Mary's 1970's and 1980's work including both formats of her variety show. It was not bad at all. I just think people didn't want to see her in that type of show. I love the DVDs!
This is just fantastic, Don! Love MTM and never tire watching her shows or her interviews. Thanks!
she's so damn charming.
Love how she gives away the sketch premises for her SNL episode 😂
OMG
RIP Mary Tyler Moore.
You will be missed
MTM and Doris Day were legendary dog lovers!
I remember that morning show
To not be so jaded about life is where one finds lift and the wings
Oh awesome, thanks Don! Ive been searching for these vids since I saw the first one you posted.
Don is my hero once again. 💖
Thank you Don!
Oof that perm. 80s were funny.
Mary looks like Erin Moran from Happy Days with that curly hair.
She's so appealing here, with that dazzling smile and even the perm... For a lot of people the perms back then were Not flattering, but it looks lovely on Mary, a lovely person.
I wrote like hand wrote a 9 page report on Dave in 1995 or 96. Got double A+. In my research I discovered he did this morning show.
How much of the essay did Donz write?
You’ve got it backwards. Pika wrote my essay as well.
Moore was a very nice lady
..thanks, Don ! ..MTM will always be one of my favorites.. ..I've seen some of her appearances on other sites, but -- all too often -- the quality was so poor you could hardly see the set or their faces... ..it's nice to see what Mary and Dave actually looked like together... ..but, while I was watching part 1, a question came to mind: somewhere around the 1:19:00 mark, Mary does the off-color 'Dick Van Dyke' joke, and Dave kind of nervously chuckles... ..which brought to mind this question: there have been times when Dave has done some banter with Paul Shaffer, only for Paul to make some unpredictable, off-color comment which absolutely STUNS -- SHOCKS -- Dave to the point where it's like Paul has knocked the wind out of Dave ! (such as the direct, personal question to Julia Roberts....or the time Dave stands over by the windows to the left of his desk, trying to pull himself together....or the time Paul SHOCKS Dave SO MUCH that -- in complete embarrassment and humiliation -- Dave actually goes over to the right of his desk, kneels down with his back towards the audience, covers his face with one hand, and looks like he's either going to 'get sick', or he's doing some heavy-duty praying/worrying) ..would it be possible to upload Paul's off-color remarks and Dave's surprised/shocked reactions, or are you needing some personal time, right now..!? ..just thought I'd suggest it.. ..some of Dave's best moments/most memorable moments happened when things didnt go quite right... 😁
There was the “johnson” episode as well. An interesting idea. But you’re right - after working on the MTM set, I need to decompress.
The “johnson” episode was uploaded here, at 1:50 - ua-cam.com/video/LsVe4Q6KhvE/v-deo.html
@@dongiller ..THANKS, DON !!! ..for some unknown reason, I never can remember the particular set-ups/routines to those reactions.. I just watched your 'Johnson' episode again, and it STILL makes me LOL..!!! ..I l-o-v-e Dave's reactions !!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 ..Thanks, again ! 😎
@ Don Giller... ..hey, Don... ..I was checking out some Letterman clips I hadnt seen in awhile, and I stumbled across the episode where Dave is "shocked" by someone's unexpected brand of humor... ..in this case, it wasnt Paul Shaffer....it was Ellen Barkin (from 1994, if the year is accurate)... ..Dave is SO "shocked", he leaps out of his seat and stands by the left 'window'... ..so... ..I know you're constantly bombarded with requests/suggestions, but I thought I'd ask you about five topics: 1) a collection strictly composed of Dave's shocked/surprised reactions between him and Paul 2) a collection combining Dave's shocked/surprised reactions between him and Paul, as well as his unexpected reactions from guests (such as Ellen Barkin) 3) collecting the best of Dave where he laughs hysterically/uncontrollably at Paul and/or guests.. 4) a collection where NOTHING goes right for Dave, such as Hal Gurnee's 'Up With People' 5) a collection which shows the extremely Compassion/Sympathetic side of Dave (such as Kim Basinger's first and second appearances, where she was 'a nervous wreck' ).. ..I know that any/all of these would be quite time-consuming, and I've seriously been concerned about you and your health during this 'virus' issue, so these are merely 'suggestions'....not expectations... ..if you feel like pursuing one or more of those ideas, that's fine... ..if you dont feel up to any of them, that's fine, too... ..just thought I'd pass these ideas your way... ..but, most important: take good care of yourself..! ..if you need to 'chill', take however much time you need.... ..and, like Warren Zevon said, "..enjoy every sandwich..." ..catch ya later ! 😉 ( ..and, 'Thanks' for all the work you've already done ! ..even though you've done 'masterful" work, such as the collections of Meg Parsont, Sandra Bernhard, and Teri Garr....as well as 'Hal Gurnee's Up With People', when NOTHING went right.... I STILL feel that your Carson/Letrerman collection was your 'Rembrandt' !!! ..it didnt get any better than THAT !!! ..so, even though it's "gone", at least I had the privilege of watching that ! ..Thanks again for all your work, Don ! ) 😉
^^^^^^^ ( ..sorry.... ..it was supposed to read 'Up With Hal Gurnee'... ..I didnt catch that, till after I'd sent it..) ^^^^^^^
Three weeks after the movie “Ordinary People “ came out Mary Tyler Moores only son died of a gun shot wound to the head. Sad
48:30 - 48:36
As a resident of Syracuse, I laughed at the quip here!
Poor dogs with people never stopping to think about how sensitive their ears are.
I believe Mary's son died the next day. So tragic.
That isa right. Richie Meeker. Self- inflicted but accidental gunshot wound to the head. 24 yrs old. So sad I bet she never recovered from that. You never recover from things like that you just learn how to adapt to it.
The perm and the pants suit
I watched this with the intent of finding the "Penis Von Lesbian" joke. I definitely remember this moment!
What does it say in that writing in the first interview in the background there's like a subliminal writing look closely its big block letters in pale white
It’s called a watermark.
Hi Don, did you see today’s (a few hours ago) upload of Weird History? They featured the cutting of Bill Hicks’ stand up appearance on TLS in 1993. Was wondering what your take on that incident was.
All here - ua-cam.com/video/dHXkTTlgLxI/v-deo.html
Don Giller Thanks, Don. I saw this upload of the Bill Hicks collection at the time you put it up. I was just wondering if you agreed with this channel’s take of the incident.
Don Giller Thanks again for all the time and work on your channel!
Haven’t had time to watch it and likely won’t. My opinion’s worth bupkus
Muito engraçada 😆😆😆😆
Life is fleeting. The day after her morning show appearance Mary's only child died in an accidental shooting.
Oh my God... are you absolutely certain about the timing of his death and how it occurred? Was it really a suicide?
@@jpetes9046 It was ruled an accidental shooting.
By her own as admission, Mary was very busy with her career and neglected the upbringing of her son. Thankfully, they had reconciled before his death. As a bit of trivia, in some scenes in Mary’s apartment on TMTMS, she had a framed picture of him as part of the props.
Lendário apresentador
Stone Cold Super Fox who made me a leg man when I grew up.
Her variety show was fun. Not always great but fun to watch.
Don, I'm wondering if by any chance you've taken the time to tally up the most frequently played songs by Paul and the band. I feel like I've heard James Brown's "I'll Go Crazy" so many times that I would bet it occupies the top slot. It pops up here going out on the '86 appearance.
I’ve begun itemizing every song they played but am only up to late September 1982. Within those 117 shows, “Love and Happiness” tops the list with 43 performances. Followed by: “Love Is Like an Itching in My Heart” (34), “Going to a Go-Go” (30), “Before We Close” (tentative title) (27), “Green Onions” (27), “Honky Tonk Women” (26), “Standing in the Shadows of Love” (26), “I Got the Feelin’” (25), “ Function at the Junction” (25), and “You Can’t Sit Down” (25).
Lots more to ID.
@@dongiller Thank you for the info - I look forward to seeing how this list develops as the 80's stretch on.
@@dongiller ..I''ll 'ante' and add $5, that -- once everything is tallied -- the final four will be (in no particular order), "I'll Go Crazy" (the 'upbeat' Buckinghams version); Al Green's "Love and Happiness", "Strawberry Letter #23", by The Brothers Johnson, and "Life", by Sly and The Family Stone... ..those are pretty safe bets... (..my guess is: "Life" will be in first place, followed by "Love and Happiness", then "I'll Go Crazy", and "Strawberry Letter #23"... ..but, it'll be close !) 😉
I’ve always suspected that “Green Onions” was at the top of the list, but now I’m not so sure. It did, however, have the longest time in the band’s inventory, having been played both throughout the Late Night and Late Show eras.
"Don't touch me!'
Its the acting process. She finds away to inhabit the character. But the character translates into a monster in the context of the people around her.
I think Dave got a bad rap for not getting along with women. Seems to me he got the BEST women to open up easily. Think about it...Mary, and Teri, and Bonnie, and Amy...even Madonna. Except for the latter, it seems like he got their sweetest sides exposed to us. Life would have been mighty dull without Dave!🤩😎
Legendário quem é ela
Good ol' Mary. She taught men what feminisim means.
So THAT'S where Limbaugh got that saying! 00:10 ;)
33:26 what song
James Brown - “I’ll Go Crazy”; original recording here - ua-cam.com/video/Twa3WQk2fgk/v-deo.html
Wait...did she just die?
Three years ago. Keep up.
Don't forget the joint appearance Dave is most proud of.

Hold your fire. Part 2 will be up within minutes.
Ha, fair enough. I thought maybe you were avoiding “Mary” clips as an act of mercy. :)
You should add the new chapter marks for each clip.
I do enough.
David was so beautiful in the late 70s early 80s.
I'd write about how weird America is but I don't think it's substantive enough.
