If I'm in the market for these cars, im not coming into the market with much money to begin with. So that means what I value is value, peace of mind that comes with a long warranty, low servicing costs, low running costs, low insurance costs. Practicality would be second, I'm not buying a sports car, I want the one that I can drive to and from work/school/get around. Somewhere down near the bottom would be build quality, yeh sure I want a car with better build quality, but at this price point that's not a huge issue if comparing two cars and the build quality isn't vastly different. With those parameters thought about, why anyone in this hypothetical situation would choose the VW I have no idea. The only reason you'd chose it is for the apparently superior badge presence and it's said by someone with lots more money that can afford for things to go wrong after warranty periods....which is NOT the target market for this segment of car
Considering at least one of these cars is already over 10k I feel like the MG or even the sandero should have had a better chance. The kit you can get on the MG3 is pretty impressive and they're both so much more spacious...
Come on... build quality? What about equipment? Safety? The Kia offers better equipment in the midrange model (like EX) and It feels like a bigger car, the UP missing the central A\C vents in the dashboard, something that can be very annoying in an hot country, the door cover in the Picanto fully covers the door and there are more things. Also, the Picanto available with an automatic gear box, while the UP available with the ASG gear box (with single clutch), which is less smoother than the standart automatic gearbox in the Kia. Where I live, the Picanto offered with Autonomous braking even in the lower spec model. It's a big success here, It's the most sold car in the Mini category in our coutry. The UP wasn't a big success here, also the Citigo and the Mii also weren't a big success here.
Can't quite understand why the Up! scored equal with Picanto in space while it is down on cargo capacity, even if by a little, and a full seat from the second row. And well.. since there have been several VW-s in the family, I think I'd rather go for the 7 year warranty...
Don't care too much about what they say. If you're after a car like this, go and test drive them yourself, these guys have presented the offerings to you. This is just for entertainment purposes and bit of marketing, in my opinion.
yeah the Kia is definitely the best buy. bigger boot, better engine, 5 seats, roll down rear windows, 7 year guarantee instead of 5. And then you're not giving money to the thoroughly criminal Volkswagen Group
I could tell which way this was heading from the start, there are plenty of downs about the UP. I don’t really like the outside styling of the Kia the wheels looks too small I don’t like the grill styling, I was drawn to the steering wheel And surprised at his keen drive. 7 year warranty ? I think Kia was a clear winner their being biased towards brand snobbery of the VW
Mat Davies: We had an UP for three years it was faultless and regularly delivered 54mpg in real life. The engine noise was a hoot and the only time you knew about it was when you put 4 adults in it. The acceleration and hill climbing was poor and the braking took a little longer. 39 years ago I had the original Panda. It rusted to nothing and a px value of £500 in 4 years and 65,000 miles. It still made me smile every time I drove it! GRV 234X where are you now.......
I now have a Skoda Citigo and it's identical to the UP! And i think it's an excellent car of you travel alot in the city. The only thing it fails is when it has to go up a hill, that 1.0 l is very weak. And also when overtaking a vehicle.
I have a 1998 Peugeot 106 diesel. Cost me £500 three years ago and still worth that now. Not let me down and I have put 30k on it. Does 80mpg on a run driving steadily. You can keep your new cars.....
@@russcattell955i since when? Last year i just got the citigo and now it's the electric version in the dealer. Plus the regular one is still available.
It was evident whivh one is gonna win from the moment you gave better scores to up in space dept. It had a smaller boot and smaller back seat space and still somehow got 4.5. that is just biased.
From all of those cars I'd pick only the Dacia. It's very reliable, the suspension is built tough. I know.. the ride is a bit harsh but for all that space it is the most grown up car from all of them. And by far the most reliable.
So Fifth Gear the car with a smaller boot, has one less seat and is noticeably underpowered, more expensive to buy and has less equipment is easier to live with everyday🤔 WHAT A JOKE!!!!🤣
Get the Sandero and the remaining 3k you can use to buy yourself 55" TV, a week of skiing in the Alps and a week on resting somewhere in the south of Europe.
So let me get this straight: The VW up! gets you less boot space, less seats, it's not quite as fun to drive (which I know for having hired the both of them), it's more expensive, and you get less kit as standard (I mean, if you're willing to splurge a little bit more - and I mean VERY LITTLE - you get loads more equipment in the Kia, too), and yet the up! WINS the lifestyle test? Oh and btw, why is the styling an element of the practicality test? You make no sense. Oh, and good job on the dreariness. Why you guys were never as popular as Top Gear, I'll never know...
VW group spends A L O T on good PR. Not only pushing expensive Audis into Hollywood movies/sitcoms, or giving Golf GTI to Clarkson. This here is not a test, it's an advertisement.
Why so much love for vw in Europe? I have a 10 year old Jetta in the drive I got for free. It has so many electrical problems it was considered unfixable. The Jetta interior is lovely though. On the other hand I daily drive a 257k mile 19 year old Camry with zero problems. I got 33mpg in the Camry the last road trip.
I Still don’t understand the appeal. My Toyota Camry has 260k and has needed only a couple of minor repairs and regular maintenance. I haven’t needed a garage to repair it or be familiar with it. It’s a simple car. The Jetta in the drive is an over complicated turd. Beautiful interior though.
Good test, helped me make my mind up and bought the Picanto. Anything that comes 2nd to a 'can't lose VW no matter' on 5th Gear is obviously the real best buy. The interior on the VW is laughably sparce! Thank you, my son is delighted with his Picanto!
I drive a VW Golf and I reckon the Picanto has a nicer interior than the Up!. Clearly more features, more practical, and I’d say objectively the Kia’s a better car! Also VW discontinued the Up! in Australia due to poor sales, whereas the Picanto sells strongly over here
@@fivish you'll get many more. My 1st generation Picanto has got 250000 km (that's a quarter million) on the clock and it's still going strong for a car of that vintage. I just bought a new one to replace it.
Kia is the winner for me as the VW UP, is just a rebadged ARGO. Also Kia gets 7 year warranty, Kia’s not going to give you that if they didn’t build their cars well. Also they didn’t give the MG much of a chance. I think the whole test was pointless as they were always going to put VW first.
Lost all credibility when you gave the Up more than the picanto for space. You even said the boot is smaller and the there's only 2 seats in the back. Not sure you understand how rating systems work Confusing. That up was going to win before the test had even started.
You had the 1.2L Picanto as you said it has 25 more horsepower than the Up. There's no way in hell you can get a brand new 1.2L Picanto for under 10 grand in the UK. With 1L engines, they are both just as quick in a straight line.
So the Kia had 5 seats and more space than the Up! But, the Up! scored higher on space?.......... The Kia is faster and more fun to drive, but loses out to the Up!?
Who think that the MG and the Dacia are better than the other four? They are bigger, have more space and lol, Dacia has almost twice the ground clearance. SO I guess Dacia was eliminated because of the ground clearance that makes it not so stable that the others and the roof bars that make noise. MG was eliminated because is more powerful than others. Keep doing good reviews guys :))
I have the MG3 myself. It has a 7 year warranty too in the UK atleast. My one is a second hand 19 plate. Aside from the previous owners parking ticket being stuck in the dashboard, which I got sorted out easily enough, it's been great. Fast compared to the competitors, 5 seconds faster 0-60 than the equivalent base fiesta, good handling too. There's apparent wind noise at high speed on the motorway/highway, but even so, overall I'm very pleased. I'm disappointed they just disregarded the MG when it drives better than the other cars, besides maybe the Kia.
Should have included Suzuki Celerio.Good reliable, economical hatchback and good 3 cylinder engine and decent boot, 4 proper windows, low insurance, 60+ mpg
VW up good styling?? ( VW Down beter name) Looks like a microwave or a fridge from behind, especially a white color one. Kia Picanto wins for me. No doubt. Also better warranty.
My personal Score: 1. KIA -> warranty, space 2. Dacia -> "real car", space 3. Toyota -> running cost and reliability 4. Fiat -> practical design 5. VW -> overpriced and built from cheaters ? MG -> never heard of it, so I can't score it, but dealerships must be rare
Again these guys decide the Verdict based on the badge and the snob value ( even though volkswagen does not a snob or the badge value) , I think the picanto is great car and way better than the up
Okay this is stupid because the only car over there that costs ~10.000 is the Sandero. For 10.000 cars all the other cars would have got only: a plastic interior with ac, radio and a steering wheel, nothing else.
MostlyWeed only up to a point, I have an mx5 which is slow but fun to drive, and a V8 Audi which is on another level fast compared to the mx5 but is fun to drive also, mx5 for a sunny B road blast, V8 Audi for everything else.
The Up in the test looks like a top spec one - £12.5k, not £10k - that's nearly twice the price of a basic Dacia Sandero (not the Stepway)........ The Up is an impressive car and a good drive, but I the Dacia is hard to ignore if you are on a tight budget.
VW: I have a smaller boot and one less seat in the back than the Kia Fifth gear: in terms of space I think the VW is better than the Kia Okay....... Did I miss the part where youtube says "includes paid promotion"??
As there is a difference between the US gallon and the UK (Imperial) gallon, figures for vehicle performance given in the two countries are on a different scale. The US gallon is smaller than a UK gallon and therefore cars will travel less distance on a US gallon of fuel than on a UK gallon. So it's pretty much the same consumption, just different scale. I still think this whole mpg should change to litres per kilometres... much easier to figur our...
LOL paid shills:) Your credibility just fell into pieces. I had both cars, the KIA and the UP as company cars and KIA is like a Mercedes Benz to UP, fuel economy wise the UP is unbeatable but it takes forever to overpass anything, KIA actually, has an engine potent enough to do even some stupid things. KIA's interior is another league, VW is jus a chipo with metal visible everywhere, KIA on the other hand, has practically no metal visible, everything's covered. KIA is much better car all the way
Jason Jason Jason why did you even have Johnny there. You dominated the judging. I would say there's a bit of Prejudice going on here. I'm not saying you're racist. Far from it. Let me say that again. AM NOT SAYING YOU'RE RACIST . but when I look at the badges of the cars. I can't help but look at. BMW Audi Mercedes-Benz. Do i need to mention more German cars i see badge snobbery plus the UP is not a £10:000 car and if you have bothered to read the comments you will see the true opinion of which car should of won. I bet if there was a BMW there. And came with no warranty whatsoever. And claims it was a four seater but can only seat two and had the boot space of a laptop and had the worst fuel efficiency it would win.
Interesting test, I own a 1.2L Suzuki Swift 2014 model and I love it. Its a very fun little car to drive, Love driving it. It may be slowest in the Swift lineup and more economical but in Seychelles its great. In UK interestingly the price is very cheaper than here though, as they sell it almost three times as much. Its crazy. Even if Jason had his reservations I knew it will be a great test. The verdict well I like VW's we do not have VW dealership here shame. I think their cars could have been brilliant here. The UP good little car and the KIA a fun one. Im leaning towards the Kia on this one surprisingly because its fun but I wouldn't mind owning the VW to live with. In the end of the day if you can own both cars that will be better. Get the best of both worlds.
Not that lap times would matter in everyday use or a 5th seat in the back, which is actually same wide as in a 4 seater (so you can't actually fit more person), BUT the 7 years warranty does also make it cheaper on long term, which is especially important for buyers of this segment. The higher equipment level on the KIA is not that much more expensive, while it gives you comfort functions like the VW would never give in this class. Simply said, KIA gives much more for your money, so it is also a winner in price/performance points. [I am also glad to see KIA owners confirming my views in other comments... ;o) ]
I like the Toyota Aygo (Peugeot 107/Citroen 1). It has a really robust engine using a timing chain, think they dismissed it too quickly because of the small rear seating
So the Kia has more rear storage, more folding storage, more power, better handling, seating for 5 and a better interior, so you picked the Volkswagen. Wish I could buy that Kia in the US.
Of course the VW won, these are honestly all such biased reviews. Clearly though the interior quality wouldn’t have been as up to notch as that outdated Volkswagen UP, the KIA was way better in every other aspect.

True, i wont spent money on these micro runners

It's not if you need a car that gets you to your job in the morning and back in the evening every time, reliably. Used cars are always less reliable and a full warranty can save a ton of money on repairs if something goes wrong.
I agree. Right until the point where your out of warranty car gets a massive repair bill. Doesn't happen often these days but it does happen and you don't want to be the guy on the receiving end.
@@siraff4461 That's why you get rid of the car the moment its warranty ends (if you can) - or purchase an extended warranty.
KIA hands down, why?
it superior on every aspect except interior design, fit and finish.
but that thing will last for sure than VW,
7 Years warranty is good..
the Fuel consumption is good..
Chassis is good..
engine n gb is good..
space is good..
service is good..
No, I would never even touch a kia. Not even in a million years.
7 years warranty is just an empty promise. When my KIA started to have problems under warranty, dealer refused to fix anything.
@@N1ckZ badge snob.. pfft..
@@jurmalniex I have a 7 year old Hyundai, never had a problem getting anything fixed. I'm guessing the dealer is your problem. Ask around and find a dealer with a good reputation.

Right from the beginning..both reviewer were biased for the VW Up! ..without a doubt Kia was a better car but its unfortunate to see reviewers jst choosing what they like personally..very bad..
Almost like the're scared to admit the truth. Whole thing was a sham in the end.
VW clearly lost. In Canada, quality of VW isn't better then the Korean. So double whammy.
The best thing about the 7 year warranty is that you dont need it. I have driven 29,000 fault free miles in my Picanto.
I went and drove all and I highly recommend the Kia. Hands down!
We used to have a VW Up, it was forever at the garage - now have a Picanto which is a much better car.
@@gandalfwiz20007 VW has cancelled the Skoda & Seat versions in the hope of you spending more.
George Huser Agree , but they should have used the Stepway , we have a duster, great car .
Love the brand bias
So Fifth Gear the car with a smaller boot, has one less seat and is noticeably underpowered, more expensive to buy and has less equipment is easier to live with everyday🤔 WHAT A JOKE!!!!🤣
Get the Sandero and the remaining 3k you can use to buy yourself 55" TV, a week of skiing in the Alps and a week on resting somewhere in the south of Europe.
And much better reliability
So let me get this straight: The VW up! gets you less boot space, less seats, it's not quite as fun to drive (which I know for having hired the both of them), it's more expensive, and you get less kit as standard (I mean, if you're willing to splurge a little bit more - and I mean VERY LITTLE - you get loads more equipment in the Kia, too), and yet the up! WINS the lifestyle test? Oh and btw, why is the styling an element of the practicality test? You make no sense.
Oh, and good job on the dreariness. Why you guys were never as popular as Top Gear, I'll never know...
Fuel economy should have had scored more..
Why? They're all within a few mpg of each other and this kind of car is usually for low mileage town use.
He gave the up 4.5/5 in term of styling and it’s looks like a washing machine 😂
Vw Up looks like a microwave or fridge from behind. Especially a white color one.
@@kienfung3045 Easy to put your washing in the boot by mistake! lol

Well that scoring was bollocks
Don't care what anyone says, my 1 LTR Vauxhall Viva beats them all, in my totally biased opinion 😂

Starting be disappointed with this team. Was my fav show but it seems they are being paid to be biased by who pays them more.
I dunno why they always overate any car with a VW badge on it ... the up isn’t as good as the picanto
Good test, helped me make my mind up and bought the Picanto. Anything that comes 2nd to a 'can't lose VW no matter' on 5th Gear is obviously the real best buy. The interior on the VW is laughably sparce!
Thank you, my son is delighted with his Picanto!
I am delighted with my Picanto. 29,000 fault free miles.
The Kia is a better deal. More space, more fun to drive, better warranty and similar build quality to the VW.
It's quite obvious they were going for the VW just because of the badge.
But they had the £12k up beats addition so what’s your point
I knew they would pick the boring VW but I'll tell you now, expect cambelt problems, but not with the with the Aygo.
So the Kia had 5 seats and more space than the Up! But, the Up! scored higher on space?..........
The Kia is faster and more fun to drive, but loses out to the Up!?
New Picanto mk 3.1 has 4 seats.
So uglier (subjective), more expensive, less practical, less fun to drive, no handles in car, shorter warranty vehicle won? OK.
There is nothing funnier than a snooty car journalist because we know 95% of them have no money and have no basis for snootiness ...
My personal Score:
1. KIA -> warranty, space
2. Dacia -> "real car", space
3. Toyota -> running cost and reliability
4. Fiat -> practical design
5. VW -> overpriced and built from cheaters
? MG -> never heard of it, so I can't score it, but dealerships must be rare
Couldn't agree more what you said about VW. One thing is VW group very good at. And that's with their cheating sofware and marketing.

"its also the least fuel efficient in our group at 43 mpg"
**cries in America where 30mpg is considered amazing**
Your fuel prices are five times cheaper than in the UK 😓
[I am also glad to see KIA owners confirming my views in other comments... ;o) ]

The Panda 4x4 is incredibly common in the Alps. There really is no better endorsement.
What? The picanto has the 7 year warranty you have to remember that
So the Kia has more rear storage, more folding storage, more power, better handling, seating for 5 and a better interior, so you picked the Volkswagen.
Wish I could buy that Kia in the US.
Of course the VW won, these are honestly all such biased reviews. Clearly though the interior quality wouldn’t have been as up to notch as that outdated Volkswagen UP, the KIA was way better in every other aspect.
I bet if they peeled off the VW badge and stuck it to any of the other cars it would suddenly win...for some totally unbiased reason.
As I understand it, the statistics show Porsche had the best build quality for years, but were beaten last year by Kia. That must say something.
