Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Time to go home for a nice cup of tea.....
At 9:44 God bless you for saying that! Amen! Always great to hear about people that share the word of God, if I didn't already mention it in a comment before, the book of John, Matthew, Luke and Mark is a great read and awakens one to what makes us human.. ( the book of John explains a lot, so good, hope you get to read it sometime if you haven't already! All the best!
Your reflections regarding the history of the old building struck a chord with me Barry because I have the same thoughts virtually every time I see an old ruin.
The 'graveyard Mike' incident elicited a bit of a chuckle.
We love easy Mike!!
Stay safe Barry!
Go to the South Pacific during Winter they said.....It'll be FUN they said....
Thank you, Barry, for all your videos. It feels as though you have invited all of us a little bit into your life, with an openness and vulnerability that includes sharing your mistakes, lessons learned, struggles, victories, celebrations, abilities, and limitations. Your honesty with the camera means that though I've never met you face-to-face, and probably won't get to, you feel like a friend I'd love to sit down with over a beer. I'm Canadian, but but my wife's mom was a British war bride, so we've visited family in Cornwall and Plymouth, and our own adventures have taken us to live in Inverness, Scotland twice. Until recently my wife's job meant that she travelled to London every once in a while, but she has now left that job, so your videos and connections to the UK remind us of lots of things we have fond memories about. If I could, I'd love to join you for a month or two to share in the adventures, but since I can't, getting to see your videos is the next best thing. I don't imagine that you have any plans to make your way back across the Pacific and up the coast of North America, but if you do manage to get to Vancouver, BC, let me know. I'd love to meet you face to face and do a little kayaking with you. All the best, and keep enjoying the adventures you're having.
My Grandfather was from Vancouver. Cheers.
Omega , that is a vauxhall Barry , you knew that .....lol
Dear Sir, the combination of real sailing and storytelling with, as always, the very best music, just fab. I thank thee - Keep it coming Captain.
Half your bloody luck son. I hope to be seeing you out there on the blue water next year.
Old Sea Dog that was funnier than shit you getting your ass scared that was funny funny funny good luck my friend hope to see you out there.
Your Spray hood (bimini) looks past it but if you do want to make it waterproof again a cheap solution is Builders mortar sealer, something like Thomsons water seal which is a trade name in the UK. Cheap as chips, just paint it on and let it dry.
Old Seadog living out the dream. How could people not like this?
@Jorge Javion wow people still use Instagram and Facebook in 2021? Seriously?
I really enjoy your adventures. Great !!
Finally made it through all of your videos. Inspiring. Keep them coming.

Will and Sarah C said "Thanks" for your salutations
Dog your having so much fun being alive and sailing around. Your inspiring
failed my English college class .bummer . . watch Adventures of an Old Seadog it will be ok
Another great Video Barry. I have a lot of respect for you and what you're doing. You're one of the only YT Sailing Channels who is doing it single handed and really showing the nitty gritty of what it's like. Everyone says single handed can't or shouldn't be done for a multitude of reasons but you're showing that it's possible. I hope to be doing the same in 2021, I'm looking at Boats now and giving myself a year to get it and myself kitted out. Good on ya, and keep on living the dream...
Hi Rick. Thanks for the comment and good luck with your adventures.
Great music in this episode!
So glad the weather changed for you 😁
At 7:57 I thought he said “these assholes”. Glad to see your safe.
Too funny, thought the same! Ahole...wtf..
Ditto.
Bazza would never say asshole because he doesn't have one, he's got an arsehole - completely different...

Another great video Barry! That atoll looked like a nice place for a beer and a BBQ. Shame the weather wasn't playing nice.
Looking good on the island
Many thanks for allowing me to go with you via your videos. You're a decent man, stay well.
Lovely orangey morning ... bucking n blowing ... but coffee makes everything alright!
The 'strange poo looking things' may be any one of a dozen varieties of sea-cucumber known in northern Australia and nearby regions as 'trepang'.
Another name for them in New Guinea is 'Beche-de mer' in a local dialect of Pidgin English.
In Australia they are often also referred to as 'sea squirts' due to a habit some have of forcibly ejecting water from their gut if disturbed.
They are an extremely simple, sessile, filter feeding organism consisting of little more than a fleshy body with an intake at one end and outlet at the other connected by a very basic gut.
Malay fishing boats in particular have been harvesting, boiling and drying Trepang for thousands of years.
The resulting product is predominantly sold for consumption as a delicacy in the form of a soup ingredient by Chinese markets in Asia.
Personally I don't see the appeal in eating something nothing in the sea seems to eat, but each to their own I guess.
Nice beautiful morning , nice colors xD good sir. Welcome back 🤩 keep safe and keep us updated.
Happy to hear from you again! I was a bit worried, so I'm happy that you once again found a beautiful piece of our planet, safely.
Watched this at night, as usual, to relax with headphones on to not wake up my wife. Well, 11:38 made me jump in chair, my wife woke up and thought i had a heart attack XD anyway, glad to see you are living your dream, cheers
With the music you chose throughout, I felt I was in a Disney movie. A little drama but then SUCCESS!!! Thumbs up for you sir. :)
