He didn't dodge the question AT ALL. He answered it masterfully by pointing out the reality of how an entire music store is at our fingertips. He explicitly said NO ONE is _making_ you listen to anything, nor keeping you from listening to what you want. I subscribe to that 1000% on many levels. Personal responsibility. I'm tired of hearing about these concepts of how the media divides, and mainstream manipulates, and there's a plant here, and an agenda there, etc etc. Take charge of your own life, use your own mind, make your own decisions, go against the grain, curate your own exposure, stop depending on these industries to expose you to what it is you want; it's lazy, think critically for yourself, shun what's destructive, seek out what's constructive, etc. Etc. This whole concept of complaint about what the gatekeepers and shepherds do to herd the sheep is pathetic. There will always be sheep, and they always be manipulated. We can't save them, let's worry about ourselves, and let's those who are asleep remain asleep. Most of them put forth NO effort to enlighten themselves, many more simply don't have the ability. Taking the accountability off of them and placing it on the "man" is entirely counter-productive and actually enables and perpetuates what it is you're trying to aleve. Ignorance is bliss to them. He avoids a lot of questions that are important and all he cares about is who he gets to rub shoulders with so and then people can feel the same importance of working shoulders with him knowing this is the very man putting up the sexy Reds to destroy the black community. He's taking a huge risk by going on the Budden podcast I'd say. He said at the start people were telling him not to.
I'd venture to say, since we literally see almost no one else of that level of power come to speak, ESPECIALLY during this time.. He did excellently compared to his peers.

This interview is a Master Class in Media manipulation and subversion. I figured that’s what it would be from Joe’s clips on IG. To me personally, industry execs always seem shifty, vague, and ambiguous because of the nature of their careers, across the board in every industry. They’re all owned by companies that have no interest besides gaining control. From the jump he couldn’t help but name drop industries and their heads. First 10 minutes there’s Disney Clive Davis etc. This is an industry interview nothing more, nothing less. Anybody that knows anything, knows the industry in totality is a blood sucking machine in all of its forms. I’m only viewing to see how deep he is into it, because I know who backs him and is behind him. I’m not interested in much else he has to say until he stops cuddling up with the powers that be and uses his talents for the empowerment of our people, and not for getting folks to give themselves and their power over commercially to people who are only looking for control. It doesn’t help that he seems to be here only to paint a specific narrative. It’s obvious if you listen to his language, tone, and name dropping. It’s nothing but PR, media management, and the manipulation of audience perspective. Nothing he said promoted true independence. If you listen closely he is only ushering people to a new medium of industry, not encouraging the creation of entirely new and separate ones, for us and by us. I’ve done research into all of these things and none of them are run separately or independently from the powers that be. They are all Artificially intelligent digital shackles instead of contractual ones. They are all under the same slave masters using the same allure of commercial success. Everything he said was poised in a sensationalized way. Theres a reason why they sent a black man up to the podium to speak on “the most popular music podcast” and captivate. If he was here representing himself I’d be rooting for Mr. Jackson, but he’s here to represent Gamma, a non black owned industrial entity, whether he has a part in it or not, and I’m praying for its destruction same as the rest.

This is my first time learning of Larry Jackson's existence, but I've gained much respect for his persona, influence, journey, and the knowledge gleaned from said journey. His take on the Kendrick-Drake feud was quite mature. He strikes me as someone who always has the bottom line in mind but the integrity to care about how he goes about obtaining his objectives.

He was fired by Sony for cause - not going to say what that was, but it was to the benefit of an artist. 2 things I took from this interview:
1. Larry is a culture impersonator and in light of the shift in mood and behaviour relating to artists and executives, he tries to paint the picture of somebody who helped shift the industry to this point.
2. I believe the timing of the interview is interesting. He never talks about Bad Boy or Puffy, albeit his close ties to Clive Davis. Goodness knows what he did in his teenage days to rise to the top of his profession, but his mannerism and slight arrogance throws me off quite a bit….. He uses ‘the BLACK Culture’ slogan or references to it a lot… he doth protest too much!

Larry Jackson hasn’t really explained how Gamma monetise differently to a record label apart from they pay artists weekly, and provide artists with predictive earnings. I’m sure they leverage Apple Music contacts for content sharing. It sounds like they have a 360 deal with the mention of Monetising podcasts, merch etc. Of course he won’t share the keys but I’m invested to do some digging. It’s obvious that Drake is a seed investor
Drake doesn’t need to be an investor to have equity. More on that in a second.
This is the equivalent of affiliate marketing. I think LJ covered every artist in the gamma stable over the course of this interview.
Juggling the concept of high frequency black vibes while monetizing some of the most low frequency music imaginable is a special skill. But I suppose to be human is to often be conflicted.
He needs to pitch that “every voice matters” line a little different . To be a card counting hit maker, a trend setter, a refined man of taste REQUIRES discernment. Your watches and your water are curated as intentionally as that interview location so come on my guy - if all water and all watches actually don’t matter…do all voices really need to end up in my daughter’s ear?

The answer to the question about Drake’s possible STAKE in gamma was like saying “look over there at those OTHER guys I’m grateful for”.
Anyone that helps a new company get up and running may receive equity. What Joe meant to ask was “is Drake on your cap table?”
If you started a company designed to nurture and produce hit makers and flip the recording industry on its ear and Drake agreed to consult - wouldn’t you give him equity?
In the same way that Joe doesn’t need to put this interview behind the pay wall to get paid, Drake doesn’t need to be an “investor” to get paid.
JB ducked his head and pumped the brakes a few too many times on this interview and maybe LJ’s fam was off camera and JB was feeling less ratchet but I wish he didn’t let all those SAT words mess with his fast ball.

This was a glorified advertisement for Gamma, riddled with intellectual filibustering and PR censorship, not a genuine conversation. Joe coddled Mr. Jackson during this talk, and in the editing of it. I’m glad I wasn’t expecting journalism or a genuine dialogue. Larry mostly talked and Joe mostly listened while being used as a spring board for Larry to just keep talking.

At the end of the day he was doing his job and he did what he needed to do to get it done. I will say tho, that the truth of how he got the job done is till the truth. Placating to his ego was the only way Mr. Jackson would have felt comfortable enough to say what he said. I’m glad there’s some one like Joe who can do that job, because I personally wouldn’t have been able to suspend my sense of principle just yo avoid conflicting with his.i was more so expressing an observation than making a complaint.

When Larry spoke about how he is proud of certain people on his team for “fighting for the ball”, metaphorically, I couldn’t help but think who’s the opposition; the majors or the other players in different business sectors? Like what is the end goal? To get just as much power as the major labels along side the 1% artists (Drake and Usher) or to make music ( or rick Ross’s podcast lol) a much more popular resource for media manipulation? Great interview and and display of how a boss should conduct themselves. Larry Jackson is not a hater and that’s admirable these days. It’s so easy for a lot of people who are deemed to have “cultural impact”to get triggered and get to gossiping. They always take the bait and small minds eat it up. What ever game gets dropped get shadowed by gossip. Larry doesn’t play that game. I’m glad I watched the whole podcast.

I've been fortunate to spend time with Larry throughout my career, finding our conversations insightful and a privilege. It's great to see this level of discussion online.

Larry is so shifty. Whenever he’s not being truthful, he looks on the floor or in the air to choose his words. That’s a peculiar tell. He knows what he’s doing. This interview is just PR for his company(not that I blame him) but he should stop talking like he’s so different from traditional labels. What’s the “tech” that makes gamma a technology company?
I agree whole heartedly. The agenda is clear and so is the desire to control the narrative for gain and benefit rather than for the sake of honesty, transparency, and over all being genuine.

To whom it may concern. Do not be deceived. The foundation of the "music industry" is for artists to not own their IP. None of the artists mentioned own their music and thus the elephant in the room as everyone else makes money off of the music artist make but do not own. In case you didn't know there has always and will continue to be a war against INDEPENDENCE. Joe I presume knows this but of course politics as usual.

This man is very interesting. Anyone who is a top executive in this industry I do not trust but his background and come up is impressive. His (lack of) response to Joe's very important question about the same types of acts being pushed at the top by these companies, was extremely telling. I wonder what he couldn't say and what he has in on it. It's a shame he's a black man with his power and doesn't see a problem with the types of acts being displayed to represent us. This industry is much deeper and darker than we can imagine.

Most interviews have a sense of satiation after the questions asked are actually answered. This interview lacks that. No disrespect to this gentleman at all. He seems like he would be a great conversationalist too. He seems so knowledgeable that it would have been more beneficial if he wasn't speaking as an executive, but rather just from the perspective of a lover of music with a care for the art and artist. He was not speaking openly and it shows OR...

"Feelings" is not the word that I would like to use here but it's the only word coming to mind. I was unsatisfied afterwards. You seem to have been able to have a more mature acceptance of the "what" and the "why". I hope this makes sense.
I can't put my finger on it but this interview is very weird, there's some tension here, not terrible but theres something holding this conversation from being a well flowing convo, i think this man is a businessman and Joe is asking him these questions being curious about certain things and he is responding like a salesman.

Much respect to Larry but he’s describing things like digital distribution and weekly/monthly payments as if it’s some kind of ground breaking new technology.
I think he's saying that the way they're setting it up for artist is that they will be able to access funds weekly, bi monthly, monthly. He's giving different options. Its makes sense though. So many of them get advances and end up in the negative. I think his model will pay them in increments, which is pure profit. A paycheck from their earnings. Maybe it will decrease the amount of artist who go broke.

Things really started to make sense when he expressed his background with his parents. They stayed married and they’re both highly educated. That means something. And I really love the fact his dad was an engineer. That made his understanding of Saas and Paas and interest in the technological infrastructure of Apple.
