"A gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without it, you'll never be enough with it." -Irv Blitzer, portrayed by John Candy in "Cool Runnings. The crash didn't happen for the reasons shown in the film, but it did happen. They used real footage of it in the film. Since these 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Jamaica always has a team participating to the Bobsleigh event at each Winter Olympics. And they are a respected nation in this sport since these '88 Olympic Games, because they often perform decently. In Jamaica it has become a tradition and a pride, to have a Bobsleigh team. Nowadays they even have several teams (4-man, but also 2-man, and they have a women's team since 2018). *They usually have excellent/powerful pushers, thanks to the quality (and number) of great sprint runners the country produces... Jamaica is so great at sprint running that there obviously isn't a spot for everyone in Track & Field sprint races at the Olympics... Therefore, the same way many US basketball players go to play overseas or many Brazilian soccer players go to play in Europe, there always are Jamaican runners who choose Bobsleigh from the get go, because you have way more chances to end up participating to the Olympics that way 👍✨✨ PS : Agreed, this movie has a lot of heart 💛🖤💚
It's very important for a country to have a sport they all support, preferably also a national team which represents the country well, both on and off the "field". Norway has cross-country skiing, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia has Rugby, Germany (and most countries) have football and so on and so on.
It's based on a true story at the Calgary Olympics. Same one that had Eddie the Eagle. After that Olympics they changed the rules to keep amateurs out. Shame since they're all supposed to be amateurs. People rooted more for them than the professional armatures. They knew they couldn't win but wanted to just be able to compete and represent, what the Olympics was originally about. The antithesis of that mentality was the Atlanta games.
Rule changes didn't keep amateurs out, just those without experience, qualifying times and support of their country Olympic Committee. The Jamaicans and Eddie almost just showed up since no one else from their country had entered.
Saw this in the theater, full enthusiastic audience. People loved it and it was utter silence and tense when they crashed, people exhaled in unison when it showed they were alive and then the end when they carried the sled, people clapped and cheered and some people cried. It was cheesey and a popcorn movie, but it really resonated with audiences and my impression was a lot of people loved it, even though it's goofy and ridiculous.
I'm an old man now, and the Jamaican bobsled team and British skier "Eddie the Eagle" are still my favourite underdogs of all time. They didn't need to win; it was enough that they were there.
Cool Runnings is a great movie. It's also interesting from a movie making perspective in that it's a comedy cast with almost totally unknown actors, except for one of the all-time comedy greats, John Candy, and _his_ role is one of the only ones that is (mostly) not played for laughs. Ironically, this very funny movie is one of the best examples of John Candy's _serious_ acting chops.

As I'm used to walk everywhere in my home country, I also walked to the dorms one night from the bar, thinking that it's only a 15-minute walk and it shouldn't be a problem. It was -46 degrees that day and in hindsight it was pretty foolish of me. The reason they had a country western bar in Calgary, is because Calgary is full of real cowboys like a more northern Wyoming or Montana, I actually think that it's right over the border
Thank you very much for covering this movie. As a child of Caribbean parents, this movie was actually a vital part of our movie collection growing up. So I deeply appreciate your decision to cover it and make a video about it today. Thank you.
I like the fact that there is a Jamaica Cup. This is awarded to the highest placed team from a country without a bobsled track. There are only 12 countries with competition tracks at the moment, so this means there can be a some competition for this cup.

Cool Runnings for Life!!! Feel the Rhythm, Feel the Rhyme!
One of my favorite movies from my childhood! Glad to see somebody reacting to it! FYI, much of the bobsled footage is actual footage of the Jamaican team from 1988, including the crash. Also, throughout the movie, the Jamaicans are ridiculed as outsiders, especially by the team from East Germany. But in real life, all the other teams demonstrated proper respect and sportsmanship to the Jamaicans. One team even lent them a backup sled so they could compete.
I was still discovering the work of John Candy at the time, and I was a kid, and this was the first flick that gave me a taste of John Candy’s range as an actor. You can really see him change when he gives the talk about his past and owning his mistakes.
Love this movie, watched it countless times at school n at home back then. Doug E. Doug stole every scene he was in and yes John Candy always delivers!
I can't remember too much what was happening at the time but the world absolutely championed this underdog movie; it was so needed at the time and was so easily embraced. And being #16 in gross earnings the same year Jurassic Park came out is no small feat. I loved watching this with ya :)
Calgary 88... 1. Jamaican Bobsled 2. Eddie the Eagle 3. Elizabeth Manley and #4...Spud MacKenzie P.S. John Candy passed away the year after this movie came out...one of the few celebrities that I actually cried when I heard he died. I'm biased because I'm Canadian.
Yes, that's Canada - Calgary is host to one of the largest rodeos in the world every year. No shortage of people in cowboy hats who listen to "both kinds of music" (country AND western) there. 🤣
In 2008 Winter Olympic training there was a bobsled team that crashed and one of the bobsled team members past away because of it. After that happened the country's team didn't end up participating in the Olympics that year because of the accident.
„Cool Runnings“ German/European premiere was the kick-off event for the German Olympic Team for the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer. It was a big success and the Jamaican team was celebrated by the all Olympians in attendance. That included the German bob sleigh teams that won Gold and Bronze in 1994. It was a memorable party…
I loved this movie growing up it had a firm place in those childhood inspirational sports movies. Even though they didn't win a medal they got the respect of their peers which probably felt like a gold medal to them.
So glad that you were able to experience this movie. This film is now a comfort watch for me, and it’s on often in my home. My family has always quoted many lines from this film….especially Sanka’s lines. 😆
This is the movie I refer to when discussing the importance, or lack thereof in its case, of historical accuracy in movies... While not historically accurate, it is a very well done sports movie... Well acted, well paced, and, most importantly, very inspirational... ... it's bc 10 year old me saw this movie that I have any concern about the sport of bobsledding (my favorite winter Olympic sport next to hockey) and why, when Jamaica manages to make it, I root for them... Historical accuracy doesn't resonate with someone for 30 years, but an inspirational movie about overcoming adversity, working as a team, and being proud of one's efforts regardless of outcome... That will stick with you for life.
👏This Reaction was More than Worth the Wait!👍One of the BEST Movies that's Ever been made💝Heartwarming, Hilarious and My Second-Favorite Performance by John Candy (His Best being 'Uncle Buck' of course)! Fun-Fact: the Team Captain 'Derice' (played by Leon) was also in "Cliffhanger" this same year, He's the Guy whom Stallone impaled through a 'Stalactite' in that Bat-Cave! Recommendation: Y'all should also consider "Eddie the Eagle" from 2016, similar Sports-Story about another Famous Olympic Event that (coincidentally) happened at the same time, and the same place!👌
Great movie, but it was heavily Disneyfied. For starters, the four man bobsled team had very anglo-saxon names: Dudley, Chris, Michael, Devon. Also, the European teams (yes, the Germans too) were nice to them and were excited to see a new country added to the winter olympics. I understand the change was to help with the "underdog" aspect common in sports movies, but I still find it cool that the other teams didn't care about color irl And as others have mentioned, that footage of the bobsled crashing was real and it is incredibly gnarly to look at. First time I saw it, I could have sworn their necks were broken. John Candy is fucking awesome btw 🇨🇦
Thats a ridiculous comment about their names. So what? Naming them after British names was common among ex British colonies globally! And I watched the event on tv live at the time-people WERE taking the mickey out of them before they saw how good they were.
@elcorado83 I just find it funny they based it off a real Olympic event and opted for characters as opposed to adaptations of real people. And they chose the most stereotypical Jamacian names for them. And I said nothing about spectators. I was talking about their fellow athletes. The Jamaicans themselves said the other teams were nice to them.
RIP John Candy. Even though he is Canadian we consider him a national treasure in the USA.. he was a treasure to the whole world.

Maybe do a John Candy poll:- 1) The Great Outdoors 2) Splash 3) Who's Harry Crumb? 4) Delirious 5) Brewster's Millions 6) Stripes 7) Only The Lonely
All are fantastic and funny :)
"Delirious," yes!
"Rescuers down under"
Uncle Buck!!! 🥞
@@lkf8799 They've seen Uncle Buck ;)
The Great Outdoors is an all timer for me. Splash also- John Candy is great in a smaller role.
The reason they had a country western bar in Calgary, is because Calgary is full of real cowboys like a more northern Wyoming or Montana, I actually think that it's right over the border
Nice!
One of the best sports comedy movies ever made!
Loosely based on a true story!
Another Candy film to see: Canadian Bacon. A great war comedy
YEAH!!!!!
i'm a 32 year old dude & have no shame saying this is still my favorite movie of all time!!! yes, it's fun & funny & silly, but also, so many great life lessons written out in the dialogue of this film! metaphors for addiction & pep talking one's self into confidence. awards not being everything. great stuff.
One team even lent them a backup sled so they could compete.
it's really unfortunate that they portrayed the east german team that way. i understand wanting a rival for the team but it's still unfortunate.
I was still discovering the work of John Candy at the time, and I was a kid, and this was the first flick that gave me a taste of John Candy’s range as an actor. You can really see him change when he gives the talk about his past and owning his mistakes.
🎵 Come on now people I know you can't believe, Jamaica's got a bobsled team 🎵
Thank you. In the last 30 years I could never understand the lyrics before the word Jamaica.
Another heart-warming film about an underdog at the Olympics is Eddie the Eagle. A 2016 film about Britain's first Olympic ski jumper.
Love this movie, watched it countless times at school n at home back then. Doug E. Doug stole every scene he was in and yes John Candy always delivers!
The end crash was the footage of the real 1988 teams crash. They walked to the finish line but didn’t carry the sled
There is not a movie that makes me cry as consistently as this one. One of my favorite movies of all time.
Along these lines is Eddie the Eagle which is about a British ski jumper and is absolutely as endearing and funny.
32:36 "wow. slow clap. oh i have chills." -Schmitts 😊
Country music is HUGE in Alberta. The entire province is basically Montana.
I can't remember too much what was happening at the time but the world absolutely championed this underdog movie; it was so needed at the time and was so easily embraced. And being #16 in gross earnings the same year Jurassic Park came out is no small feat. I loved watching this with ya :)
Other great John Candy movies are Summer Rental, Only the Lonely, and The Great Outdoors.
Maureen O'Hara, who played Candy's mom in "Lonely", had a lot of nice things to say about him.
Loved this movie growing up. Got to see the Calgary Olympic grounds a few years back 🇨🇦
Been waiting for this one. I love this movie so much.
For more john candy, try Summer Rental. A wonderful family comedy. 🙂
Calgary 88...
1. Jamaican Bobsled
2. Eddie the Eagle
3. Elizabeth Manley
and #4...Spud MacKenzie
P.S. John Candy passed away the year after this movie came out...one of the few celebrities that I actually cried when I heard he died. I'm biased because I'm Canadian.
The scene at 17:48 🤣 where everyone stops and freezes when they first come out with their sleigh out on the snow, was HILARIOUS! 💯👏🏽🤣🙌🏽😂
Wow i never thought people would react to this hidden lost gem of a movie. Good choice.
One of my favorite sports movies! It just makes me feel good when I watch it.
I remember seeing this in the theater and it's been one of my favorites ever since. So glad you guys enjoyed it.
Yes, that's Canada - Calgary is host to one of the largest rodeos in the world every year. No shortage of people in cowboy hats who listen to "both kinds of music" (country AND western) there. 🤣
Great reaction you too! This has always been one of my favorite movies. So glad you enjoyed it too😀
If you two enjoy John Candy i think you both would really enjoy The Great Outdoors movie. Another classic John Candy film.
Yeah, he has a much better performance in T,P and A.
He wasn’t the main character in Cool Runnings, he was just the supporting actor
I love both you guys, but Samantha is such a doll! 🙂
I get teary at the end, especially the picture of them and the music playing in the background and knowing John Candy is gone 🥺
Yes and it’s been 30 years since he passed away
In 2008 Winter Olympic training there was a bobsled team that crashed and one of the bobsled team members past away because of it. After that happened the country's team didn't end up participating in the Olympics that year because of the accident.
„Cool Runnings“ German/European premiere was the kick-off event for the German Olympic Team for the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer. It was a big success and the Jamaican team was celebrated by the all Olympians in attendance. That included the German bob sleigh teams that won Gold and Bronze in 1994. It was a memorable party…
Olympics that year are in Calgary Alberta Canada , and in Alberta we are like Texas North .
I am writing this to help out tbr Schmitt and Samantha and this video and this channel with the algorithm 🥰
feel the alogrythm, feel the algorhyme. lets all comment, its bobsleigh time!
@@FlashAsh lol exactly 😂🤣🥰❤️
I loved this movie growing up it had a firm place in those childhood inspirational sports movies. Even though they didn't win a medal they got the respect of their peers which probably felt like a gold medal to them.
I can quote this film word for word! It still makes me cry with laughter every single time
So glad that you were able to experience this movie. This film is now a comfort watch for me, and it’s on often in my home. My family has always quoted many lines from this film….especially Sanka’s lines. 😆
I really miss John Candy. His screen presence was so awesome.
“We’re different, people are always afraid of what’s different” ❤ Love this movie and John Candy!
This is a wonderful flick with John Candy, cool reaction as always Schmitt & Samantha, you both take care and have a nice day and a good night
I freakin love this movie! It's so much fun to watch!
Nuff people say they know they cant believe,
Jamaica we have a bobsled team!
When they carry the sled over the finish line it’s “hey dad you wanna have a catch” and “because my dad promised me” time.
Been one of my favorite movies since it came out when I was a kid.
The movie takes place in Calgary, Alberta which is like the Texas of Canada. Cowboys, rodeos and country music are the culture there.
I understand the change was to help with the "underdog" aspect common in sports movies, but I still find it cool that the other teams didn't care about color irl
And as others have mentioned, that footage of the bobsled crashing was real and it is incredibly gnarly to look at.
Not to mention that all have fake Jamaican accents
It’s laughable if you know any Jamaicans
@@-M0LE Most Jamacians I've met are either apathetic to this movie or don't like it.
And yes. The cartoonist accents are a big factor in it.
@@daustin8888 agreed
Filmed in Calgary Alberta. My Dad worked on this movie, worked with John Candy.
I love Samantha's "This is NOT a good idea" face at 4:12 :D
All right!
I love this movie.I still have it for V.H.S
This movie is timeless and its never gets old! ❤🎉
