The 2005 Japanese Grand Prix. As a bit of background information, Renault and McLaren were way ahead of everyone else (a bit like Red Bull and Mercedes in 2021) that year and no one else had won a race in the season. Teams didn't change tyres at pitstops but fuelled up instead, which meant drivers who had just made their pitstops were slower, as opposed to today where cars are slower before they come in and much quicker once they made the pitstop. DRS and KERS did not exist which meant the only way to overtake was to be faster than the car infront or have less fuel, as opposed to the more strategic method of overtaking drivers have today, conserving ERS and playing "DRS chicken".
It started off pretty strange as the Toyota of R.Schumacher started on pole position as Alonso, Raikkonen and Montoya, the three fastest drivers of the season, were in 16th, 17th and 18th respectively. Fisichella looked set for an easy win, as he was 3rd and R.Schumacher started with a low fuel load, 13 positions ahead of his nearest rivals. Montoya crashed out of the race early, eliminating him from contention as Alonso and Raikkonen carved their way through the field, with Alonso making one of the greatest moves ever on M.Schumacher in the Ferrari. But then, Raikkonen, who had been held up by the slower car of M.Schumacher, got ahead of Alonso in the pit stops. He breifly took the lead, but he had to make a pitstop, meaning he had to chase Fisichella, who had been dominating for the win. It goes down to the very last lap, but I won't spoil the result.

@@potatogirlcultist19I haven’t watched this race but I will definitely set aside some time after reading that. Refuelling era of F1 is interesting compared to current regs. Thanks so much for the write up 😄
