Sweet Emma Barrett suffered a stroke in 1967 and continued to play until her death in 1983. She wore bells sewn on garters on her legs and stomped her legs to the beat, sang and played piano. Did I mention that she was a self-taught pianist?

I lived in Baton Rouge ‘76-‘77. One of the last things that I did before moving back up North was to make a final visit to NO. That night at Preservation Hall, a gentleman brought out a lady in a wheelchair over to the piano. It was almost reverently quiet. Sweet Emma started playing piano with one hand and sang with all her heart and soul. She brought the house down. Still to this day, it was the most amazing production I have every seen. RIP you beautiful Angel.
