  • Plant-based meats are here to stay. But they are not without controversy. Not everyone is thrilled that you can make burgers out of soy and coconut. Or fried chicken out of jackfruit. And while many of these products contain high levels of plant protein, critics say they are also high in sodium or unhealthy fats. So, does going meaty with Impossible Foods or Beyond Meat pose some health risks?
In Ep. 269, Dr. Christopher Gardner discusses the Study With Appetizing Plantfood-Meat Eating Alternative Trial (SWAP-MEAT) that looks into the effect of plant-based meat on cardiovascular disease risk.
Dr. Gardner refers to trimethylamine N-oxide or TMAO as a "promising risk factor," suggesting a potential link between elevated TMAO levels and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This connection, however, still needs to be established conclusively. Tune in for more about the findings of the study.

Dr. Gardner- don’t you find your work frustrating???
Why won’t Stanford give you a grant to compare Whole Food Plant Based diets to Standard American Diets?? It can’t be that hard to do- and would clearly be more satisfying to you as a lentil/chick pea eater.
Americans deserve to know about the foods that are killing them with chronic diseases and increasing our health care budgets and insurance rates!!!
    “Eat plants, not too much.”

I asked on another video of yours... Is there any research comparing the longevity of plant based protein vs whey supplements that don't have all the saturated fat? There's a lot of stuff showing that animal protein in the form of red meat isn't great, but I can't find anything about whey supplements.

If you are going to eat junk food, it should be plant based junk food!
I eat a vegan compatible mostly whole food plant based diet, but I do indulge in plant based meat alternatives on occasion.

Plant-based meat? This is the same as wooden iron.

Even the lack of heme-iron should be a plus for the Beyond burgers...
yet the coconut oil, the canola oil, the potassium chloride & the methylcellulose are off-puting. For the record, I do not eat flesh and do not miss it but if I did, the list of highly-processed ingredients would probably make me postpone the change to vegan diet indefinitely. And I keep on consuming dairy instead of vegan cheese/milk for the same reason. No starch- based vegan cheese would make me reconsider this, sorry. I'd rather source my cheese from a small, environmentally-friendly farm and simply eat less of a real product than subject my body to the effects of a 'healthy' industrial concoction...

I meannn.. dairy from another species isn't exactly natural to consume. You simply don't need milk from another animal. And if it's natural, then why is it cancer inducing?

Did he really just say there were two types of HDL, large fluffy and small dense? That's a pretty fundamental mistake for someone who's been involved in this theater for that long.

I wonder how much you get paid to promote this. I would love to see a study comparing the fake meat with a true carnivore or ketovore diet.
