Hi Both! GREAT video!! i have a D4 2011 SDV6 HSE with 122,000 miles on it.My power steering felt heavy so i checked all bushing and ball joints and all were good, tyre pressures correct too..... so i decided to do a Power steering fluid change as in the manual it suggested that heavy steering could be fluid related. I followed your video (using a large funnel taped to the top of the reservoir, and an air line connector from the return pipe to some hosepipe into a 5 litre container) and it worked a treat! Three interesting things i noted... 1. The fluid i removed was extremely dirty (almost black) and smelled burned...... (i removed the reservoir and cleaned it with petrol too - it was not too bad but needed cleaning). 2. The pump is always pumping so as soon as i started the car it began draining the funnel of new liquid and its VERY quick in draining it - fortunately two of us were doing it and we kept filling it quickly! 3. the power steering now feels as should do! no idea why this would make such a difference - but it does. I bought my Power Steering fluid from the Main Franchised JLR dealer which they supplied as: RAVENOL SSF Cold Climate Power Steering Fluid - Landrover STC50519 which is what they use. Lovely green liquid.(£18.30 per litre including VAT). Removing the headlamp and loosening the coolant tank gave great access to the clips/hoses on the bottom of the reservoir too! Without this video i think i would not have had the confidence to do it myself AND would have had oil everywhere - fantastic team - keep up the really excellent work.
Old Deutz FL 912 and 914 engines are bullet proof 👌🏻😎 …. Love the little Hercules ‘Smoker’👌🏻😎 and still waiting for the Transmission Oil change 😁 …… plus Vera needs some new Trousers 🤔
2014 LR4HSE LUX- Today I did a power steering flush and fill, and an engine oil and filter change! Very satisfying day, and all went well (with no OMGs) thanks to the confidence you instill in your viewers. If you see it done it is so much easier to do. Now I have Power Steering fluid up for sale for Toyota owners! Your videos are interesting, entertaining and educational!- thank you!
Hi guys we are planting cabbage plants In the fields just had to see you lovely people doing power steering fluid ptfe tape great it’s great to see you best wishes phill&christine Lincolnshire England 🏴
This is the second LR video I've seen in the space of a week where I curse the design of the ARB front bar. Cant get the headlight out without removing the bar. Ive done the power steering fluid change several times on my D3 and having that headlight out looks like it would make the job so much easier
Another wonderful, fun video, "Oh my God!". Meticulous working with all that love and TLC. Imagine what that would cost at the dealership... you should compare a quote from them with your time and costs - that would also be fun! Well done.
Christian does most of the work. But i am quite sure Vera plays esential role. What he does would be - if not impossible, than at least very different - without her. Very interesting dynamics you 2 have. Seems sort of rare nowadays. I watch episode after episode. And i am a Toyota driver. Interesting...
I'm sure there are many people envious of Vera having a wonderful technician looking after her vehicle. Lovely video again showing what a perfect team you make.
Oh my god,I'm going to have to donate to your finances,I cannot allow Vera to have worn out trousers, great informative vid as usual, thanks to you both.
Love your videos! Keep on doing this please! The German engineering and the (almost Dutch) humor is absolutely a great combination. Unfortunately i don’t have a LR3/4 (driving a L663), but this is so good to watch! So, Toyota drivers have also no excuse ;)
Love your content and humour, great informative videos, like that you utilise your engineering skills to manufacture bits and tools to suit the application. Keep your great videos coming
Oh wow, that part you made is slick. I believe that reservoir is the same on my AJV8 L320. If you guys still make it I might hit you up. Single use but that is some beautiful stuff!
Superb video, I did change the reservoir on my LR4 and the oil looked exactly as nasty as yours. Good job Christian easy to do with the right tools. OMG 😲 😱 171 💶, I feel your pain as well. Take care!
Yep probably the most neglected maintenance on most LR’s I’ve owed is the condition of the power steering fluid OMG As usual you’ve done a proper job changing it.
It's always a treat to watch you two, and currently I've not even got a Discovery! I have a tip for anyone that's ended up with stubborn to shift air in their power steering system. Usually just gently steering all the way to one side and then the other a few times works, but if it doesn't, find a way to apply a slight vacuum to the reservoir whilst repeating the above. I use a MitiVac. Even a slight vacuum makes any air bubbles bigger and easier to dislodge and rise to the surface. Also I have a three cylinder generator with a SAME engine which I believe is a clone of the Duez you found. I assume the engine is to power a vibration function on the roller? As ever, all very best wishes from the U.K. Diesel £1.81p at my usual Esso petrol station BTW.
My dream is to build a workshop like Christian’s. I’ll just turn out this quick adapter on my lathe…. Danke Schön. I’ll add this to the coolant and thermostat and expansion tank change and FBH service. My list of things to do to the truck grows bigger by the day…😎

both of you are extremely good at doing things and very lucky to be able to make parts like that .and thank you for the video but all so you legs would be a bit warmer young lady if you sewed that knee up in your trousers LOL
If I ever buy a Citroen Xm V6 with the brilliant Diravi power steering (lookup how that works!), I’ll contact you for refurbishing it. They are the No 1 in the world for leaking (usually within 100k kms and badly with the super high pressure hydraulic system) and no one has been able so far to refurbish them… Note: this issue is typical for the Xm, not the CX. Hint: typical manufacturing tolerance is around 0.001mm. In other words: I love your custom engineering that makes standard jobs special!
I very seldom comment on videos. However, I have to say, I really enjoy watching yours, they are really helpful. I wish your LR3 was a 4.4 ltr engine instead of a diesel engine. We don't get the diesel option here in the US. I love my LR3, except when I have to feel up with gas... Watching your videos allows me to keep her up to par. Yes, she is high maintenance but that is true for most good-looking girls, lol. I used to own a D1, I neglected her for too long, and it became too expensive to bring her back to roadworthiness. I sold it as scrap and I regret it ever since. Especially when I learned that people are paying good money for them nowadays and mine was a beautiful red D1 50-anniversary edition. I'm not doing that to my LR3. Besides the engine videos, everything else is applicable. I love your German engineering precision, even if it is less than the Japanese precision, and in my personal opinion, it is also more than American precision in many ways, although German engineering tends to get too complicated sometimes when simple tends to be better... Anyhow, my point is that your videos are very useful and they help me a lot in keeping up with my LR3. Please keep up the great work. Cheers!
Great job, as always! I like seeing the preventative maintenance jobs as much as the repairs. Here in New Jersey, diesel dropped this week from 5,69USD to 5,19USD per gallon at my local station. You guys in Germany [and Europe in general] are going to have a tougher time with fuel prices for a bit, but I think it's for the greater good. The US prices have shot up as well, but this needs to be done. Stay safe.
Diesel here in the UK is over £1.90 at some places, my 300tdi will be getting some nice sunflower cooking oil if the price doesn't drop soon, there's talk of rationing diesel here today..... Super. Great vid as usual 👍
I did this about 5k miles ago on my Freelander 2. I used the same method as BevisPits. I used the new and old reservoir together to flush the new fluid through the new and out of the old until it came out clean. I did pump it as you guys did by turning over the engine, but later worked out any bubbles. There really were no bubbles for me. It worked great and the steering is quiet and should now last a lot longer.
We had Deutz air cooled on our Hovercraft, there was only one cylinder temperature sensor, careful located on the most cooled cylinder and not on the one that was most likely to overheat!
Looks like a reasonably simple and worthwhile service, except for those of use with a bullbar. :) Christian, If you made a pack of drawings for all your specialist tools you use, I would buy it and I'm sure many others would too.
Great video, as always. Land Rover also does not expect you to change the fluid on a defender either, because they know it will brake down after a while, and you have to repair or change the steering box anyway!
I had a bit of a panic earlier as I was awake early and there wasn't a video 🤣. Great to see the preventative maintenance taking over from the major stuff. Also, glad to see it's not just me that saves the old stuff for a hall of fame 🤣 That's another tool I'll need to get machined for the tool box though. Scary fuel prices that and I will be over in Germany in about 5 weeks so I hope the prices calm down. See you next week. 😁
I did this just recently on a range rover sport. You don't need to turn the car on, Jack the front wheels off the ground and just turn the wheel left full lock then right, it will flush out the same way, I just kept filling up the reservoir and had a line out on the return line into a clear container, you get x2 full lock left and right before you refill the reservoir, about 4 times and the fluid came out clear.
Changing steering pump fluid. WOW. Mea Culpa, I have never changed brake fluid except when a cylinder fails and then it gets flushed through as part of the repair. Steering fluid never ever changed at all. Also never had problems. Engine oil gets changed once a year when the vehicle is serviced apart from last year when the garage advised not to bother with a service at all. Well 124Km in 1 year a service is pointless.
Australian fuel prices have gone up immediately....why? Good question! $2.20 /litre I’m going to change my power steering fluid, thank you for all the tips. Look forward to the review of Fabian’s re-build.
Hi Christian and Vera, great video! I flushed mine through with the front wheels raised off the ground and the engine off. Turning the wheel left to right fluid started to run clear after about 1 and three quarter litres of fluid. I find it less worrisome with the engine off as there is less chance of introducing air into the system... obviously still need to keep checking the level in the reservoir as you go 😊
It doesn't matter if you let it run dry with the engine off. Just pull the return line from the pump and let it drain, turn the wheel lock to lock, add a liter of ps fluid and run it through, turning lock to lock. Reattach the line, refill and bleed by turning lock to lock usually 5 times is enough, then start the engine so the pump runs and turn lock to lock multiple times and any remaining air will bleed. The big issue is having the pump running dry, if you manually bleed while the engine is off it is fine. I've done this 4 times this way without issues.
@@any0n378I'm not to the "German" level of auto repair, but it works just the same. I actually the first three times just pulled the line and drained the whole thing without flushing and refilled it and bled it with the engine off just fine. My fluid was really nasty though so while it got a lot better the last time I pinched the return line with vice grips ran some fluid through until it was clear, then just removed the vice grips, reattached the hose, refilled the ps reservoir, did the manual bleed turning the wheel lock to lock with the engine off and then with the engine on. I didn't replace the reservoir but if you wanted to after you drain reattach the hose you can do it at that point before refilling. This technique is pretty universal you can do it on any car and if you have 2 people it works best but in the LR you can totally drain it no issues as long as it isn't running and it bleeds the air pretty easily.
@@shaunbava1801 There is no such thing as the German Level of Auto repair. Time is money. Why would you spend time to make equipment if the job can be done without? We are working on a car, not a space ship.
Those of us with Toyotas don't need regular power steering fluid changes because the pumps always leak so the fluid is constantly being replaced. I see you are being ripped off by the oil companies as well as us although we are still considerably cheaper here in the UK, Diesel has gone up around 30 pence in the past two weeks even though the price of crude has dropped in the same time scale. I did see Holland and Belgium are above 2.50€ a litre now. Another great video and a nice way to spend half an hour on a Sunday afternoon, keep them coming.
You’re getting good guys, no major disasters. I liked the way you filmed it with another camera 📸👍👍 I like Dr. Christians out door operating theatre and Nurse Vera’s collection of body parts 😂😂 I filled my van up with diesel last week and since then it’s gone up 10p in a week to £172. /litre and I’ve seen it at £180. / litre ! It’ll be over £2 in no time. I’m starting a UA-cam channel LDT or Lazy Donkey Time, at least if it breaks down or dies I can just eat it. I think you’ll need 4 horses and then sit on the bonnet, it’ll look like a stage coach from a western.
Love these video's! New disco3 owner here, will start to do some preventative maintenance, ps I'd love to order your funnel! I live about 1500km away so shipping is not an issue.
Another great video guys and brilliant piece of engineering at the start.. so looking forward to seeing the catch up on Fabian’s LR. Have a great week a head. Hopefully the prices will come down here in Europe soon.
Thanks Vera and Christian for another valuable and amusing video. Also thanks for the “shorts” at the end. Interesting to see the fuel price - cents/litre. Is that Euro cents? Here in Ballarat Australia ( home of the historic Eureka Rebellion) diesel this weekend was selling for $AU 2.20 per litre. This is the most expensive it has ever been.
Another fine instructional "how to" video Vera and Christian you certainly put a lot of preparation into your jobs with making up special tools and attachments. Looks like fuel prices there have reached about the same level as here in Australia, ours is now, in some places, $2.25 Au/litre, luckily my new Toyota is running a good 8.2litres/hundred kilometres.
Once again, a fantastic video! Your LR power steering rack has beaten the japanese one (KYB) on my suzuki, just leaking since 160.000 kms :O Waiting for your next video!
Thank you for your great LR3 videos's guy's, from an Aussie and I must say, I love how you throw in Australian 'dig' occasionally :) I am currently installing air horns on my LR3. Are you able to possibly do a video on how you would wire up an aftermarket accessory, such as an air horn or light bar or spot lights, where you require a switch in the cabin and the accessory is in the engine bay or mounted externally like spot lights would be. I have struggled to find a way to safely run a wire through the fire wall of my LR3. Thanks again from Auz
The most German car maintenance I've seen😅, everything is thought out to the smallest detail, not a drop of oil on the ground, and correcting the procedures in the vehicle manual. I have done this on my Audi A4 but the lazy way: unfastened the return line and ran the system dry, which is a no no. Best wishes from Bulgaria.
“Same procedure as every year!” Ha ha as an Englander I appreciated that reference

@@shaunbava1801 Great advice. We don't all have a lathe at home to make special adapters
Fabulous!
Gate job thanks 👍👍👍
Those of us with Toyotas don't need regular power steering fluid changes because the pumps always leak so the fluid is constantly being replaced. I see you are being ripped off by the oil companies as well as us although we are still considerably cheaper here in the UK, Diesel has gone up around 30 pence in the past two weeks even though the price of crude has dropped in the same time scale. I did see Holland and Belgium are above 2.50€ a litre now. Another great video and a nice way to spend half an hour on a Sunday afternoon, keep them coming.
nice house!
You’re getting good guys, no major disasters. I liked the way you filmed it with another camera 📸👍👍
I like Dr. Christians out door operating theatre and Nurse Vera’s collection of body parts 😂😂
I filled my van up with diesel last week and since then it’s gone up 10p in a week to £172.
😅but OMG, the poor donkey...we'll get a motorcycle instead..😃🙋♀️Vera
Hi, i'm a man and i like woman ..... But I love you Christian 😍😍😍
Love these video's! New disco3 owner here, will start to do some preventative maintenance, ps I'd love to order your funnel! I live about 1500km away so shipping is not an issue.
Great job, well done both.
Very smooth 👌
In UK the cheapest is £1.64 so around €1.96 or $AU2.93 Shocking!
@@ivanpaguni Ouch! All of a sudden electric cars look more attractive... Until electricity spikes.
Yeah, charging an electric car here in Germany, with the coal still coming from Russia, the price will jump significantly in the future too. 👍🙋♀️Vera
Right now, we pay 2,35 € which is 3,57 $ Australien. 👍🙋♀️Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian we expect a 50% rise in the price of electricity and gas from April. Definitely not a good time for Europe.
Another good one.
Another fine instructional "how to" video Vera and Christian you certainly put a lot of preparation into your jobs with making up special tools and attachments.
Looks like fuel prices there have reached about the same level as here in Australia, ours is now, in some places, $2.25 Au/litre, luckily my new Toyota is running a good 8.2litres/hundred kilometres.
cept its Euros there! haha crazy bad in Germany sadly,.
Once again, a fantastic video! Your LR power steering rack has beaten the japanese one (KYB) on my suzuki, just leaking since 160.000 kms :O
Waiting for your next video!
Thanks ! top job !

Top work, give us new ideas how we can make services at home.
Great video 10/10
The most German car maintenance I've seen😅, everything is thought out to the smallest detail, not a drop of oil on the ground, and correcting the procedures in the vehicle manual.
I have done this on my Audi A4 but the lazy way: unfastened the return line and ran the system dry, which is a no no.
Best wishes from Bulgaria.
You two make a great comedy act! 🤪
Thank you
