Ukraine should occupy Russian territory, so after a ceasefire, Ukraine has something to exchange with Russia. India did the same with Pakistan in the 1965 war. When Pakistan was gaining ground in Kashmir, India opened a front in Rajasthan and got close to Lahore. In war, position matters, and it matters a lot. Being at the top of a mountain is not the same as being at the bottom. If Ukraine has to reclaim its land from Russia, where the Russians have already fortified positions, Ukraine will face heavy casualties. Similarly, every inch of land that Russia takes from Ukraine, if well fortified, will result in significant Russian casualties. However, even though Russia may suffer heavy losses, it is still gaining land. If Ukraine occupies Russian land that was not fortified and builds defenses similar to other parts of Ukraine, then Russia will face huge casualties. Even if Russia wins that land, it will not lose Ukrainian territory. Most importantly, when it comes to a ceasefire, Ukraine can exchange this land for its own, otherwise, Ukraine risks losing its land permanently."
This will only delay any cease fire negotiation. Remember, Russia is being invaded, so it can always request LEGAL support from its allies, like Belarus, Iran, North Korea etc without any reason for sanctions from the UN or the US against them. They can send troops there to retake those territories without the need for russia to relocate troops from the main fronts.
Russia will have cleared these UA troops from Russian land long before any ceasefire can be arranged! Put another way, Russia will not attend a ceasefire meeting UNTIL these UA troops have been removed!

Brilliant move from Ukraine, in terms of peace negotiations defended land is the same as not defended land, every km of russian territory worth 2 times more for Putin than Ukraine's territory but costs 10 times less to take for Ukranians since there are no mines, no fortifications, no troops defending anything, they may even take Kursk and the nuclear plant, disrupting reinforcements to belgorod to encircle it. Russians will have to move a lot of troops from far away to stop Ukranians and stop their advance in Ukraine and even retreat to more secure positions, their offensive is virtually put on hold, they need 3 times more troops to advance in Ukraine since it's defended territory so Ukraine can spare the troops for this operation without compromising its defenses, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they manage to do an incursion and gain a foothold in Crimea. Kiev is closer to this front than Moscu and so logistically they are much better position to do this, it's not even much more difficult to provide support for your army at your border than to support it 100km if the roads are clear, you get there in 2 hours, and if you reach Kursk the army could raid the city for supplies. The fastest they move the harder it will be for Russia to counter.

Instead of maintain the almost status quo battle with the Russian on existing battle grounds with one hand tight around the back due to the weapon supply treaty by the Nato countries. Kicking the enemy on a weak spot will first jolt the enemy's egoes. Now, not only the enemy has more to worry about, and more fire to put out, from the front line re-deployment, Ukraine can detect the movement and utilizing new attack hot spots.
They captured a bunch of conscripts. Conscripts are very valuable as Russian public does not have much stomach for losing children who have been conscripted. Pretty smart on Ukraines part. I think they should push all the way to Moscow. Russia has been left defenseless maintaining pressure on the front lines, might be a good play to checkmate their exposed "king".

You´re quite right. Position matters way more than territory, especially when it comes to negotiating a ceasefire.
Why is DW so cautious when reporting on Russia?... They seem to aid Russia in their lack of encouragement for Ukraine's success!

we don't know enough to give accurate assessments but give the Ukrainians credit for exploiting a weak point. Disrupt logistics? Capture troops, weapons and supplies? Force Russia to redeploy from Donbas? Morale booster for one side and the reverse for the other?
They captured 12 settlements, control 400sq kilometres and only 10 KM away from the nuclear plant, it’s easily verifiable as the Russians crying on military channels and posting pics videos and discussions, so now you up to date on some of the info, it’s 3 brigades each around 2000 man and looks like they got logistics in and started to dig in, interesting how it will develop, in a day Russian army from Donbas region should arrive, so Ukrainians got another 24 hours

I'm Russian, there are many local videos made by civilian drivers (families with pets etc.) escaping when it just began. Ukrainian soldiers were shooting and droning the civilian cars in the beginning of the attack. An ambulance was droned, most died inside, a pregnant woman in the car shot dead, children etc. They just shot everyone who tried to escape long before the Russian forces came. Locals recorded their escape while driving, later their phones were recovered. Ukrainians droned a civilian guy who came back to rescue the senior guys stuck in Sudzha. Mines over road. Every few meters a burnt and turned over civilian car on the road, all remain in the escaping direction. Also they used explosive bullets against civilians who tried to escape.

Seems that the Russian trolls are doing a better job here than the conscripts are in Kursk.
Yes, the Russians are a disaster on the battlefield but invincible on the socials with all their bots. After all the Kadirovites facing the Ukrainians in Kursk were nicknamed the TicToc Army. As soon as they saw the first Ukrainians and bullets flying over their head they abandoned the positions as quickly as they could (with an heroic and victorious retreat). The ruzzian conscripts were not as experienced as the TicToc warriors and so they remained in place and were later captured.
