    I love how the crystal catacombs is doomsday for the MP’s who are losing their shit. Meanwhile, the scouts are just chilling. Totally outnumbered? Facing a superior enemy? Comrades dying left and right? Shit, that’s just Tuesday for the scouts.

    Reiss means “ to tear/tearing “ in Germany, so Historia Reiss basically translates to “tearing history” which she did by refusing to pursue the path her ancestors did for years.

    The reason Levi didn't get a scar is probably because in the manga he didn't fight Kenny. So they didn't want to make a visible anime-only change like that.

      Oh........ Well TO BE FAIR, Isayama has said that the anime is meant to be the definitive edition of the story (even if the Mikasa tattoo is a massive plot hole) 😅

      @@Koroto About that...
      I've heard that quote time and time again. Not once has anyone been able to give a source for it. And I never found it myself.
      With all the stuff that was removed, added, changed and the inconsistencies it brought to the anime, I have a hard time accepting that quote as legit.
      The original quote must have been heavily misinterpreted or taken out of context. And it was thrown around so much over the years that no one knows where it came from anymore.
      What is certain is that there are scenes of the anime Isayama worked on himself and changes that he asked for. But he's far from having control over all of the anime's writing and direction.
      The writers had to adapt the story to fit into the anime format which often did it a disservice. They also had no way of knowing that small plot points would retroactively become important such as Eren's dream or Mikasa's tatoo for example. They thought they could cut or change them and it's not known if Isayama had any say on the matter, or even if he himself knew they would become so important.
      Anyways. The visuals, the animation, the music and the voice acting all improved immensely on Attack on Titan. But I don't think it's enough to make it the definitive edition, with all the changes to the story.
      I suggest you read the whole manga if you haven't already, it will make you appreciate this story even more.

      the "source" for it is essencially that Isayama has/had a major hand in all things anime production. For example it is confirmed he added the whole chase scene with Sasha saving the little girl just so the eventualy reveal when Gabi would kill her + than live with the girl Sasha saved for a bit would hit that much harder@@angelo8606

      @@angelo8606 Isayama said in an interview that he wanted to use the anime to change somethings to make it better and he has also said how watching the anime inspired him to change elements of the story as a whole so there's some level of truth to that statement although it is not exactly accurate

    • @phthaloboy5558

      @@angelo8606 The thing people tend to ignore in regards to statements like that is as always the context. He said something to this effect pretty recently in regards to s4 and the finale, not necessarily the anime as a whole. There is very little saying he's been partucularly involved in prior seasons, and attributing such changes to him is disingenuous. The anime does a lot of things just because it's cool or more satisfying. Not everything is a planned narative change or 5000 IQ play. People need to remember that Isayama is NOT the writer of the AoT anime, just the manga. In a lot of ways the animes changes simply aren't canon. The story of AoT comes from the manga, and the anime is, for better or for worse, simply an adaptation.
      I'm also unsure if he ever said that the anime is the "definitive version", as I don't recall that nor can i find it either. He did however refer to the manga being like a live concert while the anime is a produced studio version. I think people may have misconstrued this quote, which is from an interview from the Angoulême International Comics Festival of january 2023.

    Kenny met his demise through an obsession with a dream that he knew in his heart was unattainable. He never was able to become a titan shifter, much less received some sort of enlightenment and become a good person through it.
    Witnessing Eren go through the same thing in the finale by destroying the entire world off of a childhood desire to see the world blank, only for the weight and guilt of his actions to slowly and surely creep up on him until he's at door's death with the realization that his massacre gave him no pleasure or satisfaction at all, goes to show how much his pursuit of his own freedom has costed him.
    It's copium essentially, a belief that despite all of their rational thought, or how Aaron knows now that the world is more than black and white, that people, _good_ people exist outside the walls, if he just did this everything will be fixed, the itch that's been bothering him for a long time will finally be cleansed when reality, was never that simple.
    "Everyone had to be drunk on something to keep pushing on. Everyone was a slave to something."
    And no one show that more than Eren at the very end of the story.

    • @LuisSierra42
      @LuisSierra42 4 місяці тому +2

      Eren is drunk on Freedom

    • @Qprah
      @Qprah 4 місяці тому +6

      The ironic part is that Eren is unable to give up his desire for Freedom, and so remains shackled by it all the way to his death.
      Kenny on the other hand is able to accept that he won't be able to obtain his dream of becoming so powerful he could see the world through compassionate eyes, and instead gives up the syringe to Levi. Letting go of his dream before his death allows him to act compassionately towards Levi, and thus Kenny dies free of those shackles of desire.
      Eren cannot stop trying to be free, and dies not free. Kenny lets go of his desire to become compassionate, and in doing so becomes compassionate.

    About Grisha giving Eren the Founding Titan despite being afraid of him and what he'll do, I've heard it said before (forget where, probably another UA-cam video) that he likely still does it voluntarily, as the chapel events take place BEFORE Grisha finds out about Carla's death, so it's possible that this was the last push he needs to pass on the titan, as revenge to Marley for Carla. I haven't verified this by any means, due for a rewatch of the series now that it's over, but it did seem compelling enough to motivate Grisha, outside of the omnipresent sequence of events

    • @angelamengualcortinas3614
      @angelamengualcortinas3614 4 місяці тому +5

      Yes, that is true. Grisha doesn't see Carla dying in the memories of future Eren. He even says to Path's Eren ''Why don't you show me how they are?'' or something along the lines. He only knows about it when kid Eren tells him in his present.
      Grisha's character is the most tragic in the hole series, imo.

    I think Historia lacking purpose and identity after Ymir left manifested in her latching onto the “duty” that her father told her she had. She thought that was who she was and was determined to do it, just like she was ready to accept the “duty” of being queen later on when they told her that was who she should be. I’m not sure whether she feels she lived a life she could be proud of, like Ymir told her to do.

    I think the reason Historia unshackles Eren is because she believes that is the best thing she can do atm, given what she knows. She knows that if she has the founder, nothing will change- they’ll live in the ignorant bliss until more stuff like the walls being broken happen and they’re all eliminated without anything to do. But she doesn’t want that because she doesn’t want her people to go down without a chance to retaliate (much like the scouts try to learn about the titans so they can one day live outside the walls). She also knows that Eren having the titan goes against the wishes of the family that governed the island in the way she disapproves. Therefore, she decides to go against what is expected by her father, becomes the worst girl ever, and frees Eren, not knowing that he’d become something arguably worse than Paradis’ royal family.

    This series is so great. No matter how much I think I notice all the parallels and symbolism and themes in AoT watching Overanalyzing & Retrospective manages to show me things I missed.
    I love that you mentioned and compared Historia's involvement in setting Eren free in this season and how it parallels to her playing a vital part in Eren's plans in the final season.
    It feels like so often viewers think that Historia is sidelined at the end for no reason. They don't see that her being sidelined is specifically THE reason everything is able to play out like it does.
    Eren tells Historia to run or fight against the MPs who were planning to have her eat Zeke the minute he arrives on the island after Liberio, and so she needs to resist long enough for the Jaegerists to take over so that Eren can come into contact with Zeke.
    (Who he knows is the royal blood titan-shifter who enables him to use the Founding Titan because he sees Grisha's memories of Grisha apologizing to Zeke after killing the royal family, who can only see Zeke because Grisha is seeing Adult Eren's memories of traveling through Grisha's memories at the same time.)
    She gets pregnant before Eren and Zeke return to the island 10 months later so the MPs cannot risk turning her while she is 8 months pregnant because it would risk the only royal they have left.

    The MPs that they're fighting (First Interior Squad) are arguably much more evil than the Titans. They choose to work for the most notorious serial killer of their world. They choose to kill defenseless civilians just for disagreeing with the government. They choose to not only ignore the problem of the Titans, but actively attempt to eradicate the Scouts, the only fighting force humanity has against the Titans, in order to pursue the whims of their serial killer master. The Titans, while being horrible man-eating monsters, aren't capable of higher thought. As Bertholt said to Ymir (Scout), "Reiner and I don't remember either; I have to think that you didn't _want_ to eat anyone." The First Interior/Kenny's Elite MPs want to kill innocent people. When put through that lens, Kenny's Elite, along with the Marleyan Generals, Final Season Eren, and Karl Fritz are arguably some of the most evil characters in the show.

    Many fanboys hate Eren in this scene, but it was actually THE MOMENT I finally understand his endless rage. He hated himself the most, even more than the titans that destroyed his home and killed his mom. The helplessness he felt of being "forced" fed his own dad after killing innocent kids was his breaking point. It's the same weakness that drove him and Reiner to their actions.

    Surprised you didn't mention this, but when Kenny was fighting Levi, he was always leaving audio cues to where he was at (kenny). Not once did he attack Levi in a sneaky way. Always talking to him through the process. I'm sure he was just playing "tag" with Levi. Always indicating where he was exactly so that Levi could learn from him once more. I'm not sure, that's how I see it anyway.

    Hey Korotos Mystery Shack, I am on my current rewatch of AoT and I actually have a question/discussion if you wouldnt mind. It mostly stems from Episode 14, where the court trial to see if Eren should be executed or not happens. I had a strange realization. Eren accidentally shifted, was immediately found out, and then Paradis had to have that court case, yadda yadda...but is there any series of events that could have happened that could have put Reiner, Bert, or Annie in his shoes?
    Sure, sure, you could argue that both the Colossal titan and Armored titan are far to known about to suddenly make an appearance and have any sort of trust with the people...but what about Annie? Couldn't she transform at some point and been Eren before Eren?
    Anyway, thanks. Still loving the retrospectives

    I always wonder about Eren's characterization as the "bad guy" or evil. How evil can you be if you are a slave triple-fold?
    First, the younger Eren is a slave to his older self. Second, the older self is a slave to the knowledge that no matter what he wants to do, he can't escape the future that is also already his past. He can't change what he will do because he knows that he has already done it.
    And third, Eren is a slave to Ymir who chose him to fulfill the role that she already knew he will fulfill.
    Of course, that makes Ymir also a slave to the future that has already happened.
    The one agent who may have free will in all of the entire story of Attack on Titan may be the creature - whatever we want to call it - that merged with the dying or already dead Ymir.
    And the very last scene of the entire series suggests its motivation.
    In any case, a deterministic time line, particularly one that is also already known, turns everyone into an automaton, an NPC, including, no, specifically, Eren.
    Eren is not a God, unless you follow the train of thought of some scholastic thinkers who pondered the question, whether an omniscient and omnipotent God is able to overcome his absolute knowledge?
    This question has plenty of solutions but none that is universally accepted.
    From my pov, the question is inherently paradoxical, and illustrates the limits of logic, language and our imagination to grasp infinites and absolutes.
    But Eren is neither omnipotent nor omniscient, not even within his own loop. He won't do what he has not done.
    And if there is an agent in the story, we might even say that Eren cannot do what he is not allowed to do.
    And that may be true for Ymir, too.
    They are all tragic figures, though it's not quite clear whether they are tragic in the Germanic or Greek sense.

    • @JulieDeponte
      @JulieDeponte 4 місяці тому

      BTW, while Eren explicitly tells us that he tried to change the outcome of events that he knew about in advance, we never actually see him try.
      Which is quite interesting, isn't it?
      I wonder if he actually tried to act differently or if he only remembers that he tried to change outcomes.
      Memory in this story cannot and should not be trusted.

    Couldn’t the imagery here (Eren with his arms outstretched) also be a biblical allusion? Idk if Christianity exists in the world of AOT, but to us as the viewer, this image in combination with the talk of god-hood is very reminiscent of Jesus on the cross. One could argue that Eren is in this position because he was sent to save the world (or Paradis, in this case) by his father (but also by himself/Ymir- idk if this is a father-son-holy spirit/ trinity thing).
    In this moment, Rod is kind of painting Eren as this sacrificial lamb, whose sacrifice is necessary for the good of their word (Paradis).
    I’m not sure I would go so far as to paint Eren as a Jesus-figure. Considering all he would go on to do, it could be very interesting to compare/contrast in what ways he is portrayed as a savior or a devil/demon (or perhaps anti-christ) at different points throughout the series.
    I’m not particularly religious, but biblical imagery/rolls are often used as narrative devices in western media. It’s very interesting to see them pop up in something from Japan.

    At 16:06 when you talk about why Grisha gave the titan to Eren we also need to have in mind that after the events of the episode of memories of the future, grisha finds out that Carla is dead (thanks to Eren, what makes me think that he killed her to inherit the titan) and the offensive in marley started so he could have gave it to him as a vengeance. But it doesnt make to much sense becouse the "Time travels" in aot are deterministic
