Video Information:
In Attack on Titan there have been over 150 different Eldian kings, and in this video we’re about to explain which ones were completely useless and which ones actually did a decent job. The most important factor in doing this ranking is whether the kings actions had a mostly positive or negative impact on the people, but along the way we’ll also take into account other factors such as their mental stability and how well they reacted in a crisis.
Ok so starting off in last place, the worst king in history is the man who was singlehandedly responsible for getting eldians thrown into internment zones. The name of that man was Karl Fritz although he later changed his name to Karl Reiss and to explain his weird life choices we need to examine his backstory. In the centuries before Karl was born the Eldian Empire had been using titans to brutally take over mankind, wiping out entire civilisations in the process and spreading the blood of ymir from country to country. According to Willy Tybur the total number of people they killed was more than triple the current global population, meaning by default Eldia must’ve eradacidated even more people than were killed in the rumbling. When it comes to Karl he was understandably ashamed by that genocidal history which is fair enough and clearly he felt like he had to do something about it. As prince of the empire he knew he’d eventually became king and gain all the power that comes with that and once it happened, he proceeded to do more damage to eldians than anyone else in history. A quick example of what I mean is how in the past, having Ymir’s blood used to be a status symbol among the worlds elites, but by the time Karl’s reign was over, subjects of ymir were rounded up, segregated from society and treated like animals for the next century. What makes it worse is that all of the suffering we’ve seen wasn’t some kind of accident, it was a thing Karl knew was going to happen as a result of his deal with the Tybur family.
Anyway moving on to the second worst king that title goes to Rod Reiss also known as the guy who wiped out 20% of the eldian population, ran away while his family was being murdered and came dangerously close to eating his own citizens. In the year 845 Rod unexpecedtly became king of the walls after his kids were smushed by Grisha Yeager but interestingly he tried to hide that they were dead. Rod knew that the Reiss families real power came from their possession of the founding titan and that without it, it’s possible the nobles wouldn’t recognise his authority. That’s why following the incident, he pretended as if Frieda was still alive while taking over all of her responsibilities as the new king.
Next in line we have the original Fritz who is by far the most evil person in this video.
Switching over to their descendant Frieda Reiss she comes in at 7th place on the list, and has the unwanted record of being the first royal to lose the founding titan. Prior to becoming queen Frieda’s main ambition was to free humanity from the threat outside the walls and had she followed through with that plan she would’ve obviously ranked way higher in the video. Unfortunately after inheriting the founder her mind was overtaken by the first Reiss king, meaning she was helpless to do anything when the warriors burst through Wall Maria - Розваги
The first king of Eldia that enslaved Ymir was definitely worse than Karl Fritz or Rod Reiss. Man was evil incarnate, and ultimately in the long-term, he probably brought way more suffering to the Eldian people than he ever benefitted them.

I think Freda deserved to be a bit higher on the list due to the fact that she was ready and willing to act against the Titan crisis and the Marley invasion before having her will suppressed by the vow despite how much she tried to fight against it which in combination with her lack of combat experience is what ended up killing her as the vow also extends to not being to fully commit to self defence. And lastly she erased Historia’s memories in order to protect her as she knew that if the rest of the family found out she along with her mother would’ve been killed by Kenny.

Karl’s biggest mistake was not bringing all the Subjects of Ymir to Paradis, and letting them fall into legend. His second mistake was the Vow renouncing War should only have been used for offensive war. The rumbling should be a threat that is legitimate no matter what.

the oriental clan were not subjects of ymir. they were allies of the eldian empire. that being said, mikasa was a subject of ymir because her father was an ackerman (yes. in case people forgot, mikasa is a half-breed)

Power of the titans implies all of the Founders abilities, not just memory manipulation. Ackerman’s and the Orientals are the minority bloodlines, and Mikasa is both an Ackerman and an Oriental.
Mikasa does have her memory manipulated. The cabin scene is a fake memory, and Eren wipes her memory afterwards. Confirmation: Mikasa “Armin, you remember now too don’t you? When Eren came to visit us.”
The use of the word “too” implies that she herself also just remembered. Her just remembering means her memory was wiped, which is memory manipulation.
@@Silver-iix the other bloodlines are the still pure eldian bloodlines without any ymir blood in them. that is a fact. same how the oriental family were not eldians at all. they were just allies of the old eldian empire. and in that scene with "the king must other means..." it was all about the ability to erase people's memories. not about all the titan powers. after all, the ackerman bloodline is this strong (and not able to transform into titans) because they are an experiment done by the old eldian empire to make people use the power of the titans without transforming into titans. the ackerman are already using the titans powers (albeit at a much lower scale) and this is a fact
now to explain mikasa's dream
1. that "too" which might as well be an error of mistranslation because besides it, there is nothing else to point towards that theory
2. mikasa's dream happened prior to eren's death (unlike all the other characters that remembered their encounters with eren after he died) meaning that it wasn't a memory that she just remembered but a vision through the paths. a vision that eren gave her right before she killed him so they could spend some more time together

Really? Man she annoyed the heck outta me everytime. She does not have a mind of her own. All she ever did was just agree to whatever mess she was thrown into. Not a single backbone. The ONE and ONLY time she stood up for herself was when she finally stood up to her dad, and even then, it was harder for her to go against him than it was for her to go along with his crazy plan, and she KNEW he was a terrible person. I hate her character, even now, after all her 'development'.

I was so curious who your number one was, I definitely think you made the best choice though, he certainly had a really important and positive impact on Eldia.
On a completely unrelated note, I would really love to see a story of Attack on Titan set several hundred years ago during the Eldian Empire, I think it could be a really cool short story, and really expand upon the lore and history of Attack on Titan.
There is a (canon) story set 70 years before Eren called "before the fall" but a short manga set 100 years ago would be really cool c:

I would switch Frieda and her grandfather as he seemed to accomplish less than her. All we know of him is that he locked up his own son, which might have contributed to Rod's problems later on in life, and sat around and did nothing, as far as we know he didn't even do the religious stuff that calmed people that Uri and Frieda did. Frieda though cared for and helped her little sister and she didn't want to fight Grisha and only fought when he transformed, and he had more experience and she could not access her full power. Then the whole not fighting back when Marley came, her grandfather would have done the same, that was pure timing.
So yeah, grandfather Reis, sat around and didn't even seem to care for his family, Frieda comforted people and cared for her family. I think she was the better ruler.
All and all, Ymir really shoulda just let that bastard take the spear.

Everyone of her failures can be put on Karl Fritzs shoulders. She lost agaisnt Grisha and lost the founder? Well Karl really nerfed the founder and she was new.
She didn't wipe out the titans? First kings influence.
The influence is practically impossible to break. Zeke took years in the paths to break it, and that was only because he did not hold the founder and therefore did not have the first kings influence.
But she reallt was a sweet and kind lady.
In a time where her sister Historia would have been killed if found out, where a bastard like her would be hated by anyone, Frieda decided to be kind and loving towards her.
It is a low standard for today to love a bastard, but it was much different then. She was the only one who gave any care to Historia until Ymir.
Like you said, she even sypathized with Grisha and Eren, but the first king was just to powerful for her, as well as for anyone else.
In what she could control she was one of the best. And every mark against her is really when she is not in control and her will is being overwritten.
I absolutely love your AOT vids and I have what I think is a great video idea. A prequel story of the Marleyan Warriors with a special emphasis on Marcel since we don’t know much about him!

the one major complaint i have about how this story ended was just how awful historia was in the end. She went from the best character in the show to basically being written right out of it and made a background character

@@bobowon5450 Historia had to become pregnant beacause of eren's plan he didn't want historia and his friends to die after 13 years because of the curse of ymir (historia would've inherited the beast titan but because she was pregnant they didn't do it and it was perfectly timed with the rumbling)

- Why did Carl fritz leave some eldians on the mainland? As the founder he can control all of them to go to the island.
- why in the three years following the breach of the wall Eren never tried to find his father ,he didn't know he was dead and nobody confirmed it.
1. The reason was most likely because of the population and how far apart they were. It would have taken way too long to get them into the island, Hell even Napoleon's March to Russia was stopped by a simple river and that took a good long time to cross, that was a 500,000-man army. Now Imagine an entire Population!
Marley's Rebellion too.
2. Eren was in the Cadet Corps, He couldn't go looking for him because of his training. Afterward, he was in Battles and problem after problem kept appearing.

He left them there on purpose, so they could become Marley’s slaves and be used as the vessel for the 7 titan powers. Basically he left them to become the weapons that Marley one day would use to attack the walls

It seemed as if every king of the walls after the wall were made, knew the Rumbling will happen. They say the words “someday in the near future the walls will come crashing down, until then I want to enjoy peace, this paradise.” That doesn’t like Marley overcoming the walls.
Even though for lots of citizens it wasn’t peaceful at all. Ask Levi. Also it seems the Kings of the Wall knew they had to commit genocide but just didn’t want too and kicked it down the road until someone like Eren got the power.

The nameless Eldian King deserved a series of his own. That way, we will be able deconstruct everything Marley said about Eldia. Sure, the Fall of Lago did happen. But if we looked at our own history, I am confident enough to say that the Marleyan political leadership at the time did something to piss the Eldian King of that time off, which made them ultimately being the ones responsible for the destruction of Lago. What can it be? Well, it could be the refusal to pay tributes to the Eldian royal court, the Eldian merchants in Marley being unfairly taxed by the corrupted Marleyan officials or Lago happened to being full of sympathaziers of the Marleyan Liberation Army and even giving the members of such organization refuge? We may never know which one it is but one of them is the most likely possible explanation. Back to the Eldian King who altered the bodies of the Subjects of Ymir a bit, I've remembered that Marley never mentioned anything about him. So I guess they left him out of their version of history on purpose.
Also, I believed I have a better plan that can save both Paradis and the rest of the world from committing genocide against each other. The plan is called the Heraclius Plan, named after Emperor Heraclius because he managed to force Shah Khosrow II to accept peace on his own terms in the last Roman-Persian War of 602-628. In order for you to get roughly the good picture of how can this plan go, I suggested that you go watch videos about the last Roman-Persian War of 602-628 that inspired such a plan first.

What will always get me about Karl Fritz is that the Oriental/Asian Clan was started because ℎ𝑒 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 the son of the Shogun (the family that would later become the Azumabito family) to stay. The son was only there because the Shogun family was more or less 𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑠 with the Fritz family. But the second the clan joined the Ackerman family (who were more or less the bodyguards to the King) in going against him and refusing to be nobles in exchange for silence, he turned against them and drove both clans into almost extinction.
It's even worse if you prefer the anime's version of the story in which the Shogun's son was visiting Paradis only to be accidentally left behind by Hizuru in the confusion of the capital being moved to the island.
Can you blame non-Eldians for being scared of Eldians? I mean thousands of years of tormenting the whole planet. Wtf??? And it would have continued forever if one king, Karl Fritz decided to be ashamed of Eldian empire, and save the planet from Eldians by wiping their memories.
Karl Fritz for me was the most pathetic of all, of all thing that he could done with his power to fixed the 2000 years problem he choose running away.
I believe Historia was the real reason Eren does his entire crazy plan, because if he wasn't did it then he still have chance to save all of his friends from tragic fate, except for one, cause Historia must restart entire titan lineage through her so paradis island be left alone.

We are quick to criticize Karl Fritz for his self-destructive move. However, many political leaders in the West nowadays are doing the same. They are willing to let the society that they rule be destroyed because of the sins of their ancestors in the past. Because of white guilt, they invite people of specific ethnicities to their country and let those people go on a rampage without consequence. They are even fed and taken care of using taxpayers' money, while their citizens who are productive members of society are neglected.

The first King created the entire empire. And if it wasn't for his manipulation and mistreatment of Ymir, she probably wouldn't have spent the next 2000 years building titan bodies, meaning that his empire would have fallen once he was gone. Morally, he was despicable, but there's no denying that he was a good ruler for his people.

What I don't understand is if Eren truly had the Founder and all its powers including influencing past and future events, why doesn't he just influence the first king to benefit Eldia or atleast make it so all the worlds races get along somewhat peacefully? Or why doesn't he go to Ymir before she dies and save her from being stuck in the paths for all that time?

Don't know if the first king really was evil. Of course from our modern standpoint the things he did and the way he did things was atrocious but it was clearly a tribal stage for humanity back then. They had other morals, other problems, other solutions.
I think if another king from another tribe had gotten their hands on such power would they handle it differently? Or was it just the appropriate handlement of the time? I personally think it's just how things were back then. So, if it happened today, yes, evil, but back then, in context, not evil but completly normal.
Morals are morals and the concept of doing to others what you wouldn't want done to you is a humanist one that has been around so long that it's even present in Gilgamesh [the oldest written story] which predates the invention on the horse saddles meaning that the story was written even earlier than the time of the 1st king who we see riding a horse alongside his men. So it was still evil back then

In my opinion, the first king was the best king, because he forced sadistic and immoral moves that no one else would have done but this ensure Eldia as the strongest power and gave them a technological boost at the time like roads and structures which would have been normally delayed many decades without the enforcement of his rule. It was also his idea to split Ymir’s titan which also gave them more firepower as a country at the time.
The same time, those immoral moves are the reason why the Eldians are the most hated group and why other races strive to destroy them.

Were it not for the interference with the ending, Historia would easily be the best royal they had. Instead, she gets to be the worst (somehow). Utterly failing your people for the enemy is unforgivable. She was to be the enemy of humanity (by her own words). All shat upon by the worms (editors) and rats (publishers). Real shame.
