Just bought a horse from a "kill pen" has a bad case of strangles. We've got him quarantined but this set me at ease. Thank you. This world could use more common sense.
We are dealing with strangles with our 2 horses. One guy just got in and he got it from another one. Our original horse has been extremely sheltered, never been rode, just a pasture pet and a pet and he is coughing now and my mother in law is having an absolute fit over it, gave them penicillin from vet recommendation so we can get them some relief
Excellent advice and great video. Answers all questions. Such a fuss is made of Strangles in the United Kingdom - treated as if it was foot and mouth, which it isn't.
It's the word "Strangles" if they used the more common term of "shipping fever" they wouldn't be in such a Panic. The horse doesn't get strangled, what happens, is the gland swells causing pressure against the windpipe. Once the gland/abscess breaks, all the pressure is then relieved. End of panic
I agree with the furor over this being strange and unnecessary. As the horseman says, it's a fact or life ... live with it, treat it, and most importantly, keep your horses in the best possible health so they can recover when something challenging hits them. BTW, Strangles is from a strep bacteria. It's not "a virus or a bacteria or something."
I wish you were here to calm some nerves at the boarding center I use. One boarder who works at a local Veterinarian clinic for cats and dogs (unlicensed equestrian Vet) seems to believe in taking the alarmist position...biannual vaccinations, 8 month quarantine to ensure no relapse, and mandatory vaccinations from new boarders since the paddock is contaminated with the disease. I have tried calming all of them considering both of my horses are doing so well. Slight swelling, lot of coughing at the start, and nose drainage. But none of them developed the more serious signs. Yet this individual seems to think that my horses should be kept away from the rest. Another horse was in the same paddock for 3 months and never contracted the disease. She says it was because he was routinely vaccinated. LOL Whatever...
Similar situation, at a boarding stable, coughing and sneezing, runny nose, slight fever. The common cold, got blown up to Strangles, by a young Veterinarian who also brought the panic to other boarders with the highly contagious BS routine. Since I have been around strangles "also known as shipping fever" and took care of the horses ( soap and water) that got it, years ago. I tried to explain to the other boarders the horse didn't have it and a min. of 5 reasons why. It took a couple weeks for a lab test to come back with a negative, but in the mean time it cost the horse owner a small fortune in vet bills and a lot of undo stress. When all they had to do is separate the horse from the others and wait for the glands to swell up to confirm the diagnosis, Not the over $450 vet bill the owner had to pay for BS.
So you didn’t mention and I’m just wondering, do you clean any of your water troughs, feed buckets, tack, brushes etc. ever or do you just let it keep cycling? Also, does it ever die? If I don’t disinfect my field or fence posts, wood barn and stalls... will a new horse I get a year from now catch it right away? Or will it eventually die off of everything after all my horses finished draining and heal up
Hi, one of our horses we woke up today and her head is like a balloon down to her tongue swollen she had been having some mucus we didn’t think much of since it’s been raining and some colder weather but now we don’t know if we should let her ride it out or call a vet in anything you’d recommend ?
Should I give my mare a shot of penicillin???? somebody brought a horse into my boarding facility that was positive for strangles three days later my horse has crusty eyes and white substance coming out of her nostrils should I give penicillin should I quarantine my mare?
Thank you so much for reliving so many of us horse owners

I did too. Bought a filly from a kill pen. Showed symptoms the next day

Our Amish friends really found this useful.
Have you ever seen a horse successfully heal from bastard strangles without veterinary aid?

Sound advice thankyou
👍 Don't freak out. Got it.

I love this guy! His thinking is sound! Proof is in the pudding folks. Common sense strikes again!
wow loved how you explained this
What about colloidal silver!?!?
So what do you feed your horses. Just hay and grass? I’m still learning all this.
Thank you for this video!!
About how long does the strangle episode last? Like the worst of it? And thank you so much for this info.

According to what I read it doesn’t stay in manure or in the pasture. I think more just things that are direct contact I would assume.

So how did your horse turn out? My daughters thoroughbred just got a huge lump under his jaw. Im worried
No offense to this man, but you could get much more accurate (and safe) information from reading a large animal medicine textbook.
