I like the idea about a winch that uses the existing mount after you detach. I am sure if you contact the manufacturer they would be willing to build you one that uses the same hydraulic connections and then offer the winch as an accessory to their product line.

The downside is that a large hydraulic winch is probably a bit heavy and bulky to move into place. A harbor freight battery powered one can be a lot smaller and lighter and still do what is needed.

Since you need a impact to release the tension on the chains you should just remove the jack handles on the legs and weld some nuts on in their place, use nuts that are the same size as the chain tension bolts so you only need one socket.

Transformer toys for big boys. No need for more speed Casey, I think you already got the chronological order of your contraption down to a science. I love the fact on how clean and tidy the wrecker attachment is, You can detach, walk around with a pressure washer with easy access below, pretty sweet rig, easy to service, the wrecker can be dropped off for repairs without shutting down the truck. A semi for hauling and a rig for towing all-in-one, you can't get mad at that.

You need a folding engine hoist, modified to be able to lift the winch up onto the front mount bracket (and save your back and another hernia). Beyond that, this looks to be the perfect setup that truly gives you the best of both worlds - a heavy wrecker with some awesome abilities, and a 5th wheel setup to be able to haul almost any trailer you have need to haul. It's very easy to understand why you made the decision that you did for the unit that you did - very nice looking setup, Casey!

An Apex winch in a cradle pinned to the bracket is a great idea. I'm thinking a small A frame above the winch, with a rotating sheave head instead of a normal fair lead to make it easy, well easier on the rope anyway, to go off the sides of the truck if needed. A set of cables, with an Anderson style quick disconnect plug could be mounted under the center box of the headache rack for connecting it to the batteries.
I'm not in the wrecker business, but it makes sense in my head.

Also, chain or safety wire the front leg pins and clips to the front legs so they don't get dropped in the snow or gravel and get lost.

    Hello from the Netherlands.
It might be an idea to place a bracket in the middle under your headboard rack boxes for the air couplings and lighting plug of the truck itself.
This way they are always out of the way and yet in the right place when connecting and disconnecting.
and perhaps also hang a bracket on the wrecker unit for the hydraulic hoses,
so you always place them in the same place and hang them in a good bracket that holds the couplings in place
    thanks for the video.

You should design a winch plate and market it with Zacklift - you can't be the only driver that would benefit from that - and you've got those pins to use to mount the winch plate, nice and solid. Good idea. Nice video - thanks (sorry - no criticisms)

Wow that’s a really slick unit. And so versatile for your work. I really like the idea of you still being able to use your truck as a truck too.

This is a nice setup. It will be nice when the front landing gear are mounted permanently, which will shave a few minutes off the setup/takedown time. It seems like any time I have a suggestion lately, you already thought of it in the video or one of the other commenters beat me to the punch. Semper tow!

That didn't take long at all, now I know why you went this route, makes the Western Star incredibly versatile. The Zacklift is a very well thought out product but people who know what they are doing. I'd say that's a very good investment.

Ramler Trucking Albany MN has made their own wrecker-tractor tow truck. They use container locks to secure the wrecker to the truck.
