SCRIPT:
Gary Oak is many things to many people. Oak calls him grandson, Ash calls him rival, & I call him home wrecker. Why, you may ask? Well, I think he’s the reason that Brock’s father Flint abandoned his family. Today, I’ll break down my theory, explaining how Gary gave Flint a mid-life crisis by beating him in battle.
In the episode, Battle of the Badge, it was revealed that Gary had earned the Boulder Badge. Normally, a trainer from Pallet Town beating the Pewter City Gym is nothing special. What made this victory so unique, however, is that it's entirely obvious that Gary never battled Brock. If they had fought, one of them would’ve hinted towards their showdown when they first crossed paths in Dig those Diglett.
Because there's no evidence that Gary & Brock ever had a gym battle, the logical conclusion is that Gary instead fought Flint. It's possible he fought Brock's brother, Forrest, but the Boulder badge being in the upper left corner of his badge case totally dismisses that theory. The placement implies that it was the first badge he earned upon leaving home. Furthermore, Forrest wouldn't lead the gym until late in the series.
Flint’s losing to an arrogant novice like Gary is exactly the sort of thing that would make his desire to leave home, go on a journey & finally prove himself as a Pokemon master. He had always desired to be a strong trainer so getting wrecked by Gary’s newly caught Squirtle would've been absolutely humiliating. It probably didn't help that, at that point in the series, Gary was a jerk who thought little of others' feelings.
Gary wouldn't learn to respect others until he got humbled at the Indigo League. In the early days of the series, he regularly taunted others, flaunted his greatness, & criticized those he deemed weak. Since he bullied Ash throughout Kanto, it’s highly likely that he would do the same to Flint. By the time Ash met Flint in Showdown at Pewter City, Brock had been forced to assume care of both the gym & his siblings.
It’s important to note that it’s never made clear how long Brock had been leading his family’s gym. All we knew about him when he was first introduced was that he was a powerful trainer who took his job incredibly seriously. He acted like he had been a gym leader for many years , but I think he was merely a facade so as to make up for his father’s shortcomings. It’s likely that Brock was immediately comfortable in the position as he grew up around the gym, valued tradition & had natural skill as a trainer. That said, he preferred breeding, and only accepted the gym leader position out of respect for his family’s legacy.
Given that Gary was several days ahead of Ash in his journey, I think his battle with Flint was likely the last before Brock took over his father’s position. At most, he likely held the role for about a week.
A major challenge to my theory of Brock being a gym leader, only for a few days, comes from a piece of dialogue that Flint relayed right before he returned home & resumed leadership. He claimed that hadn’t taken care of his family for years. Although this can be interpreted in a literal sense, it’s equally possible that he meant it more as an apology for being emotionally distant rather than physically gone.
All in all, we may never know whether Gary fought Brock or Flint. While I think Gary crushed Flint’s spirit & accelerated Brock’s ascension to gym leader, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject in the comments. With that, class is adjourned. My name’s Professor Silver…until next time, catch you later.

👨🏫About Professor Silver & Pokemon Explained
Each episode of Pokemon Explained profiles a different Pokemon from the main cast and breaks down its COMPLETE history on the anime, including all of its battles, appearances, character development & significant storylines.
We'll be covering all of Ash and his companion's Pokemon.
We're just starting out, so if you have any requests or feedback, I'm game to listen! Please leave feedback in the comment section or email me at Alex@ProfSilver.com. - Фільми й анімація
I thought I'd switch things up with a fun theory. If you want to see more like this, I'm actively trying to find more unanswered questions to investigate. Feel free to comment your suggestions!
This was amazing I hope you post more often
How about doing complete history of Adventures Manga Pokémon character teams
Hmmmm, it tough cause there alot of easy one "Like the GS Ball or Ash Father" but I'm trying to think of obscure ones - The other gyms in kanto that gary had, multiple mewtwos, etc -
Why Ash seems to get all the girls's affections, even Pokémon, more so than his own Pokémon.
Or whatever happened to May's and Dawn's rivals.
I remember watching Gary lose to Giovanni in the indigo league when he fought against Mewtwo. It was satisfying to watch since up until that point Gary was beating trainers left and right and showing off in front of his fangirls.
Makes me wonder how strong anime Giovanni is
Not as strong as Ash ;)
@@ProfessorAlexSilver BW Giovanni vs Ash begs to differ
@@ProfessorAlexSilver professor he is his dad afterall😂
@@mazharsiddiqi7288 Good thing that was a very recent encounter and nothing has changed since...oh wait...
Dude this is such a fun theory. Can't believe an episode from 25 years ago can still have new theories
Let's not forget that Misty's sisters were also beaten by Gary and the other 2 Pallet trainers and getting crushed THREE TIMES IN A ROW by newbie trainers caused the trio of ladies to stop accepting gym challenges in order to focus on their water shows instead! They were willing to just give Ash a badge for showing up!
Funny how it is the opposite of Volkner giving badges away due to boredom because he couldn't find a worthy challenger to reignite his love of battling.
I don't know if I agree with Flint only being gone for a couple of days at best after losing to the new trainers leaving Brock alone to take care of his siblings AND the gym. The only way it would work is if let's say because Flint spent so much time focusing as gym leader, Brock was essentially the 'parent' left behind to cook and clean for his siblings. Before leaving with Ash, Brock had to explain to his father what every child needed to be well taken care of. If Flint had only been gone for a day or so, you're telling me he wouldn't know all that?
I love this theory, but Flint probably got bodied by trainers pre-Gary and co. to the point where he felt he needed to go train.
About Gary battling one of misty sisters.
I think they just gave him the badge XD
massacred their Pokemon with only Seel surviving
@@ProfessorAlexSilver I think he battles violet for the badge.
Yours content is always creative and different than anybody else
Thank you!
Afterall he is also a Pokemon professor
Ash's Noivern
On the list :)
@@ProfessorAlexSilver yeah please
Yes please do Ash's Noivern
As someone who requested ash noivern i can agree
Great video, I think a major component of Brock being a recent gym leader was the fact that he was so intense. Most gym leaders come off as experienced but mostly attuned to their position, usually calm and but willing to teach the person they're facing. Brock seems incredibly strong-willed, like someone at the top of their class diving right into their career. It also complements your theory that Brock's dad didn't take care of his family even when around seeing that Brock was an exceptional homemaker, chef, and tailor. All skills that would take years to master and considering he was able to handle all of that with such a large family. So likely Brock took when he learned from being their primary caretaker and transferred it to being a gym leader. It also makes the scene where his family stopped Ash from delivering the final blow more sense, his family should know that's how battles go. Someone has to lose but if Brock was new and they grew close to his Pokemon, likely they weren't trained for gym battles.
Something I would've added is that maybe it wasn't just Gary but the other trainers from Pallet Town. While we never see it, having lost 3 battles from new trainers at an official Pokemon gym would cause most people to lose their morale.
In defense of that, Gym battles are meant to be stepping stones to prepare for the League. This is proven if I remember correctly in Pokemon Origins where Brock specifically uses two of his weaker pokemon because Red didn't have a single badge, aka a new trainer. Gyms are meant to be beaten and good trainers will always prepare in order to win, its just how that goes really. If losing multiple times in a row as a gym leader ruins one's motivation, maybe they shouldn't be a gym leader honestly.
@@ColetheFlame01 I thought of that but that came way before this episode aired. The establishment of gyms of varying Pokemon based on the skill level was introduced in Pokemon Silver and Gold, as far as I know for the first time in the Pokemon franchise. So the idea of Brock and his dad having different level Pokemon wouldn't be taken into consideration for the writers.
@@amharbinger fair enough, I can't argue that. though it does beg the question, what is a starting gym meant to do if they are facing a veteran trainer with fully evolved pokemon? they were meant to face starting trainers after all, with starter and weak pokemon, not powerful beasts like Haxorus or Blaziken to name a couple. It just seems odd is all.
Ash's Bayleaf is going to be so hilarious and wholesome
That she will be :)
The only other question I've always wonder is, where was Brock's mother during that time? In the dub it was said she passed away, but in Chronical she's well alive and trying to transform the gym into a Water theme gym. They never answered that question in the anime.
Hmm, maybe time travel is involved? I'm planning a video on time travel soon, but it's tough to write.
My guess is that when Brock ditched Ash in Cerulean during Season 1 he was going to see his mom who was studying the Cerulean Gym to become Water gym leader herself like she tried in Chronicles
@@ProfessorAlexSilver My guess is she could have passed away after the last kid and the father and Brock maybe agreed make up a story so they could live as a family. And its probably was something simple and easy to believe. Rather than tell the truth probably something like "your/our mom left for her own journey to research and learn about pokemon. And It wasn't mine or our dads right to pin mom down."
And I know what you all may say then why don't the other siblings traumatized well they had brock to keep them in line. And the same story would have worked probably for their dad. The world of pokemon isn't like irl where we scrutinize every little bread crumb of whether its true or not. Pokemon like a lot of cartoon/anime is often full of gullible personalities.
I think I read online once that Brocks mother having died was a mistranslation. She had actually come down with an illness or soemthing and was laid up in her room recovering, but she did eventually get better and was able to take care of her children again.
She didn’t die that was a dub error she was on a trip
You should do ashs torterra next pls
Torterra is on my to-do list :)
Gary Oak: Destroyer of Brock’s Family
Good title :)
Brock: You Took Everything From Me!
Gary: I did?
Me: hahaha
Thanks for the amazing video ❤
My pleasure!!
I don’t think flint left after being beaten by gary. Flint left way before Gary’s arrival but it does raise the question who gary fought for the boulder badge if it wasn’t Brock 🤔🧐
As you said yourself, a week at most had passed between Ash and Garys Gym Battles for the Boulder Badge. If my father were to disappear out of the blue, leading the gym would be an afterthought and I'd close it as a stand-in until the situation settled. I think it's more likely, that the writers just forgot that those two should've interacted at some point. Also, since Trainers in Pallet Town usually get their Starter from Oak, I don't think it's an uncommon occurance for a new Trainer to beat the Gym with Squirtle or Bulbasaur. That's nothing so shocking that you'd take off and leave your bazillion children unattended. The theory just has too many holes for me.
It’s possible Gary may have had a hand in Brock becoming a gym leader though may have been other factors that contributed to his father, flint, stepping down as gym leader.

Hope you enjoyed!
Can you do Gary's Ultimate Team video? He have potential, which is obvious to be a strong trainer equal to Ash and a nice diverse group of Pokémon in his possession, including a legendary.
Would be a interesting video to see.
I've thought about doing that one someday :)
Gary was the best rival!! Caught more Pokémon than any other trainers, and showed us that Jhoto existed before the end of the 2nd season. Him catching Mew is a cherry on top, top trainer
Gary with Mew would be dope
Nice video alex
So close to 100k come on you've got this!
Hopefully one day 😤
This theory makes so much sense it's scary
This is such a fun theory!
Interesting topic that u did a good job on
Thanks :)
Youve got a very kind smile! 😊
Awesome content 🎉
Thanks!!
3:00 Alternatively, it's likely that he was referring to how Brock's mom leaving negatively affected himself and his eldest son's relationship, and that there was already a lot of turmoil for years before the battle between Flint and Gary. It was just that battle that proved to be the last straw.
Not only Gary was a jerk but he was also very cocky thinking that he was better than everyone just because he was the professor oaks grandson! I remember that, and he still is kinda a jerk to mostly inexperienced trainers like goh in the middle of the journeys saga.
His arrogance would be justified if he wrecked Flint XD
I suspect Gary acts like that to inexperienced trainers to keep them humble so they don't gain that arrogance he carried, and honestly, Goh kind of needed Gary's foot on his rear.
Interesting can you do more videos like this for other theorys please and thank you
Most definitely, open to suggestions :)
@ProfessorAlexSilver I have 2 why does Ash's Gengar has different colored eyes and is really under Mimikyu's disguise?
Great theory, I dig it 👍
Thanks!!
Idk man the first few episodes lead right into eachother back to back i don't even think it took a week for ash to reach pewter city. I'm not a fan of this theory but to each there own.
This is a cool theory video
Hope do a full series with other theory ideas you might have
My most outlandish theory is that Zapmolcuno (Adventures Manga) is the legendary birds true form and seperated due an unusal phenomenon
Like how the Kanto Eeveelutions are theorized to be what the Johto Beast reincarnated from I theorize that Zapmolcuno was from a Dodrio since beside artificial Porygon, only Dodrio line could learn Tri attack in Gen 1 which is essentially the three birds' typings in one attack
I've been wanting to tackle the birds for a while :)
@@ProfessorAlexSilver it be cool cause have zero lore on there origin
More theory to come❤❤❤
I like that one of Brock’s younger brothers plays with a toy Geodude
bravo on coming up with a genuine unique and plausible theory
Maybe one of these days, you could do Ash’s Corphish?
One day :)
Hmm interesting theory! A little snag I noticed with Brock being a gym leader for such a short time -- in the Advance series Roxanne seems to look up to Brock in a way or at least acknowledge him as a fellow strong rock type gym leader. So I'd have to guess he was in the position long enough to build some form of reputation. Hard to say for sure though.
I could have sworn Brock mentioned that the other Planet Trainers beat him, meaning that Gary and the other two fought him. That was a running gag in the earlier episodes that Ash was always last.
A Lil late, but that was Samurai not Brock
The lab is looking good Professor.
On one hand Squirtle would have a type advantage against the Pewter City gym so Brock's dad shouldn't have taken the L so bad. On the other hand, Gary was a giant jerk at the time with a literal cheer squad singing his praises.
This was a good Theroy and I think it’s very likely that Gary beat Flint and broke Brock’s Family with how Arrogant Gary was in the first series and how he bulled a lot of people.
Thanks, it's always been my headcanon haha
Professor oak backstory oneday
Most definitely!
I did always wish the show hadn't focused so much on Ash's journey as it was refreshing to see other trainers engaged in gym battles (Gary, Cameron, Sawyer, Paul) I would love another spin off series like chronicles that shows different trainers and their growth through battles and othed interactions with pokemon not just flashback stories I'd especially like more focused back stories on trainers like Tobias, Morrison, Reggie, Harrison, Jackson, Tyson and Alain
Do Ash's Buizel!
If only Flint had taught his pokemon Seismic Toss.
It's Gary's weakness.
Hope you do the history of Brock's sudowoodo eventually or maybe like some Pokemon ash should have caught like sableye from that one movie Wich (I think) is cannon but anyways I like your vids professor silver 🙂
Most def! I love Suddowoodo's comedy
Likely a dub added line, but when Gary sent out Blastoise against Ash, Brock [and Misty] apparently knew about it based on their comments. Believable, since he had a badge from both gyms. So, if Brock didn't fight Gary, it at least sounded like he was a spectator. (It's also potentially possible that Flint and Brock rotated the Gym Leader role before the former retired. Brock seems like he's been in the game long before Gary and Ash showed up.)
I should've mentioned it in the video itself, but Broock was watching as Ash did research on gary's team, so I assumed that was discovered at some point the day before
That's also a likely possibility. Brock did warn Ash about Gary having a multitude of types is not the same as battling those with type preference; like Gym Leaders.
This reminds me of Paul and Maylene during Sinnoh.
If I recall correctly, Gary met Misty and Brock for the first time in the anime after Ash had won the Boulder and Cascade badges. Brock showed no indication of having met Gary previously.
That's the main reason why I think Gary fought Flint
@@ProfessorAlexSilver You're probably correct. My theory is that he battled Flint sometime later in the series. I don't believe Gary's first badge was obtained at Pewter City. Let's keep in mind that he traveled in a car, therefore it was easier for him to skip towns and return later, as he pleased.
Need more trainer history videos professor (like steven video)
When I saw your channel history, I noticed that you haven't covered any of Ash's Alola mons.
How about you make your next video on them??
plz do mallow’s tsreena or lanas primarina
On the list :)
But that's just a theory...
A Pokémon Theory!
XD
0:22 ah yea Garys infamous 10 badges, as a kid I always wondered if the seven gym badges that arent from gyms that also also exist in the games will ever be revealed with who is the gym leader and what type do they use
A mystery that baffles me to this day
Unfortunately, I don't think we ever will get an answer to that question at this point, as it was more so meant to be a way to have Gary one-up Ash than anything else from as far as I could tell. It could be possible that one of those gym badges was from the fighting dojo in Saffron City, as lore-wise it was originally that city's gym before Sabrina one-uped them and took over in their place, but it's hard to say for sure
Maybe Gary and Flint had a 2 VS 2 Battle
Squirtle VS Rhydon
Nidorino VS Golem(possibly)
I highly doubt that. Rhydon and Golem are two fully evolved pokemon (at the time Rhyperior didn't exist) and gyms use teams based on the trainer's current progress. They do have teams for full on professional trainers from other regions, but otherwise they use weak low level pokemon that still put up a strong fight for that point in a journey. gyms aren't meant to be unbeatable, they are meant to be checkpoints and tests of a trainer's skill and power.
Paul's Honchkrow and Magmortar Pls Professor 😁 👍
Professor do you also like 👍 May with or without her bandanna?
With!
Wait so when he was traveling with Ash from the original series to Diamond and Pearl who was running his gym? Or did he close it before going on the adventure with Ash.
His brother
An interesting theory for sure.
Thanks :)
Hey Silver do you have a list of pokemon you plan to review
All in my head :)
@@ProfessorAlexSilver nice
This is on the right track, but I feel there could be other/multiple trainers that were a factor to Flint leaving & not _just_ Gary.
Wait, when Gary's starter was revealed in his battle against Ash, weren't Brock and Misty shown to be familiar with it?
Though, they may have just been around for his battles in their gyms, even if they didn't face him.

I like you makeing videos on Pokemon characterd Thanks for it pls make serena ash video
My pleasure! Thatt'd be a fun one :)
Please do history on ashes goodra hes soo cute😢.
the fact that we probably won't have an actual answer for this :(
Honestly I doubt flint would leave because of an arrogant novice since well he’s the first gym he has to get beaten on a regular basis and their were probably more arrogant people then gary was especially since theirs probably more people with a water starter
Definitely possible, it's all a theory :)
How about ash’s hawlucha
Can you do history on ashes goodra.

Yes.😊

Ash’s Buizel or Mayks Bulbasaur.
First comment like always great video

Any theories on how the goverment works in the Pokemon anime? I've been racking my brains nonstop on how the goverment handles Team Rocket, and even then, they just send Officer Jenny and her team of Growlithes and still cant put a dent in thier operations. Giovanni was a leader of Team Rocket and a Gym Leader, and he still wasnt discovered by members of an international police force.
I would love to tackle that, but it's so unclear haha. There are kingdoms alongside democracys alongside dystopias
@@ProfessorAlexSilver the pokemon world honestly may as well be a mix of at least 5 different eras of time with how different every region is.
Hey can you do Ash’s Lyrcanroc or Incinaroar next?
They're on my list! I just tackled Lucario :)
@@ProfessorAlexSilver nice :)
The anime doesn't make sense, and Gary's badges don't either.
Just remember that the Otoshi insignia "changed" whenever they were displayed on the screen, one hour they were one way another time they were another.
Probably the same happened with Gary, they just drew any insignia there without giving much importance to the story.
That actually makes sense
Thanks :)
I did question this myself but I wasn't sure
Its an interesting theory🤨
Professor any idea how gary got 10 badge in kanto
Hmm, Kanto must be bigger than we were shown XD
@@ProfessorAlexSilver hehehe
I guess there were 11 gyms nit just 8
Just like in unova iris master too was a gym leader
Gary choosed a Squirtle from the start. Easy win for him when it comes to type advantage.
That's true as well :)
Wish Flint would’ve been in the games
First
Close!
Imo this theory which has in show dialogue against it heavily downplays Brock’s backstory and tries to make Flint seem better than he actually is which I don’t really like!!! That’s just me tho, and I still see the effort put into this video
Dawn piplup someday
Someday!
In my opinion, this maybe the most accurate hypothesis for Flint.
Too bad the anime left without filling in these voids.
Thanks! And, agreed haha
I thought Flint had been gone for years before returning.
He mentioned being away, but I think it might've been an emotional distance thing

Either is great
I’m just asking what do you mean 😢 either is great 👍?
Did you find the videos to has my comments like 👍 I ask you to Professor?
If I'm able to find the time, I'll check them out!
Ash's torterra
It's very much likely that Gary fought Brock's father. Because he doesn't already knew Brock.
But, it's also possible that some trainer would have defeated Brock's father after Gary, and that would have crushed him, because there's no evidence whatsoever to prove that it was Gary who fought him last.
Ash corphish please
On the list!
It's likely that Gary bought most of those badges other than battling them, I have a theory where he flirts with Erika but ends up getting in the face for that though challenges her and won, he attempts to date her but ends up getting slapped.
In the original Japanese Gary/Shigeru was not always a jerk towards others, he seems friendly, nice, kind and respects others which makes Ash's friends respects him and Ash is the one who gets jealous of him, although Shigeru does acts like a self-centered freak. In the non-canon 4Kids dub he acts more of a spoiled brat towards others, acting selfish and acts more of a jerk towards Ash and his friends which makes them hate him, this is reversed in the Johto season.
Ash’s Leavenny?
Working on it :)
Ash story line

Would been funny to end the video "smell you later" eh? ???
Poor Brock. Gets in the position then gets beat because of his father
In my opinion at least haha
