The Rival S is an amazing gun and excellent value for the price. If you're thinking about getting one and like me, have all black guns. Keep in mind the steel/chrome finish does not hide dirty ammo well. I bought the chrome one just to have something different in my collection, absolutely LOVE it... but dam! She's gets to be a very dirty girl quickly. Lol😅
Awesome video comparing these pistols! It’s great seeing another channel that’s run by an actual shooter instead of people that only shoot for their videos and don’t train. Love to see it!
I own all three of the guns reviewed. Totally agree on the Canik lack of decent grip texture and too much trigger pre travel. Talon grip tape is a very inexpensive and effective fix for the grip. Given the price point of the Canik, the trigger is not a deal breaker - overall it’s excellent. A few trigger replacements are also available. The Walther is ……well it’s a Walther with all the visual quality screaming at you. Great trigger, balance and reliability. You cannot go wrong with any of these guns so - buy all three!
I have a Canik TP9 Elite Combat and absolutely love it. Since I got it, my Glock 17 has spent more time in it!s holster. Not because I don’t like Glock. I love my 17. But I just like my Canik THAT much! It’s my first Canik. (Only one at the moment) I was wanting a Rival, but was waiting for a little while. Then they came out with the Rival S. It is definitely my goal to get one as soon as I can. (Have some medical bills to clear first). Looks like a fantastic gun and an even better value! Very cool and thorough test/review. Great job!
Outstanding review!! I've been hunting a Q5 SF P for a while. Your professional comparison has clarified a few questions I've had on the Rival S. Definitely going Canik for my next purchase.
Fantastic video!! I had about 18K rounds on the polymer rival shooting USPSA and steel challenge. It took me a few matches to get used the the Rival-S. It was almost an immediate improvement in USPSA. Wasn’t sure I would like the extra weight swinging it around in steel challenge, but after just a couple of matches I was actually shooting faster with the steel frame Rival. My double taps in USPSA were definitely much more consistent than the lighter snappier polymer frame. Hit factor was immediately better the first match. Love the videos man keep up the great work!! Nice to see an actual practical shooting review opposed to watching someone shoot at a single paper or steel target over and over again.
wow how insightful! best review of Canik Rival on youtube. I appreciate the volume of shots fired is turned down and balanced view on all of them. great job!
Excellent excellent review. Appreciate your thoroughness and you impressions. Exactly the kind of review I enjoy watching. Much appreciated!! Good luck to you.
Fantastic review man! I’m glad to have joined the channel. I see you as a rising star amongst gun reviewers, especially to those geared toward competition.
Canik customer service is great. I bought a Combat Executive that had a striker issue. They sent me parts several time and the gun never got any better. They offered to send me a new pistol at the same time the Rival came out so I sent it back to Century for a new Rival Darkside. Couldn't be happier. The Darkside is a great gun for range fun, home defense or competition. My Glock 17 sits in the safe 95% of the time. The Canik is just more enjoyable to shoot.
I am actually planning on the Rival S for my home defense, nightstand gun. We ordered a Walther PDP-F for her nightstand gun. The Glock 19 is moving to another location within our home!!!!! GREAT REVIEW!!!! Thank You.
Another exceptional report. Granuler, digestible, well-reasoned, baised on practical experience, ownership, and time on the range; both in practice and competition. Thank you, sir!
I love the way you compared, analyzed, and explained what you were doing. You gave me a totally different perspective on comparing these guns. I'm torn between 2, but no more. Thanks!
Great video, good content and accurate review in my opinion. I used to compete with the Q5 Match polymer years ago and loved it however I just bought the Canik Rival S and think that it will be at the top of my list.
The Rival is actually my carry weapon as a bodyguard.. it has every quality I need. Regarding the grip, I simply adjusted my grip technique, and now it's instantaneously clamped in. MecGar offers 20 round aluminium canik mags
I absolutely adore my Walthers and my Caniks, those and my HK VP9 Match cause me great internal turmoil every time I go to the range with a 5" pistol. Love all of them and like my boys I have zero ability to say I love one more than the other.
I'm a USPSA C Class CO shooter on a budget and was shooting a pretty stock G17 gen 4 for a couple years before getting the Rival. I immediately started shooting B Class in classifiers. I really want the Rival S but will wait until i hit B Class to make that upgrade.

Wow! Lots of great info! Thank you! I'm considering buying the Canik SFX Rival S. Would love to see a review of Zev Technologies if you haven't done one already. Thank you for the much needed info.
I had the original Zev OZ9 for a while and shot a handful of matches. I will say the the Rival S is a better gun out of the box than an OZ9. The OZ9s need to be broke-in and you need to throw away their extractor and put in a Glock Gen3 extractor in its place. I’ve replaced the triggers in them to the Timney and like it… but still not as nice as the Canik. Just my quick thoughts 😃 Also, just picked up a Zev OZ9 Hypercomp X… now… that I love! @@pandorazbux I’ve been pretty unimpressed with Zev. Their QC is terrible, or at least used to be. I bought a slide from them and the safety plunger hole was too small, couldn’t even assemble the gun with Glock OEM part. I've got that relationship with CZs and Walthers. They just inspire confidence and they're joys to shoot. I just commented on your short re switching to the Rival S that once palm swell grips become available I'll probably convince myself to give an S a try. I dislike the stock Rival grip ergos.🤷🏻♂️
Great video, explanations and with the math addition a very well thought out results. Thanks for the video. I've been trying to buy the Rival S Chrome for 6 months now but they are just not releasing g enough of them!
I owned the canik tpsfx 9 for several years 25K rounds plus. Not a single issue . Then i bought he rival I am at about 12 k rounds right now . I planned on buying the S but got a staccato C2 when I was at the shop the S grip feels different to me . I went to clean the tpsfx at about 20 k and I noticed the internal components are practically the same as the Walther I think they may fit into the Walther, just kidding. I have stayed away from the Walther because in my opinion there quality control sucks. They do have the best warranty in the business with the one week turn around time but they cannot be trusted I sent them a pdp because the trigger was sub par and I marked the trigger parts they said they changed the parts NOT !!! I sold that gun the next day I expected better from Walther Your video is the best I have seen on the caniks to date. Keep up the good work and thank you I enjoy someone who is a actual shooter not a video maker
The compact grip on the Q5 SF turned me off so I passed on it years ago and went with the S2 . The FS PDP fixed that grip length issue so I picked one up . Then got a Rival which is ergonomically superior to the PDP for competition IMO. I shoot an Sig Max in CO right now cause it really works for me but the Rival - S is something I’d like to try out for sure
@17:35. First - great video. One question - is it possible you shot the Walther better because you are much more familiar with that firearm given that you’ve put 10’s of thousands of rounds through it?
@@ron8566 that’s an excellent and fair question… and to be honest… surprised it hasn’t been asked before now that you’ve asked it. I’m little fuzzy on this, but I don’t believe I shot the Walther better in this test. This was a totally stock Q5SF. The Walther I personally shot had more in common with the Canik largely the type of trigger and ergos. My competition Walther had a modified Dynamic Trigger (yes, I had to do some actual work to it) along with my own trigger springs along with a grip profile similar to the Canik. In short, It had a 2.5lb pull with Zero Creep and very short reset along with Ergos more suited for me. As it’s been a long time since I made this video, I look back and have to attribute that as to why I squeezed more performance out of the Rival S
@@ron8566 my apologies, I had to go rewatch to get what I was saying again. I’d say no as far as my time being on the Walther giving me an advantage with… the Walther on this particular drill. The Q5SF is in general a tad heavier, especially on the muzzle end along with a well thought spring tuning from the factory to match it… that’s about as objective as I can get there. Does my time on Walther potentially give me advantage… possibly… but I definitely still feel strongly after over a year and a half since this video aired… I’d still go with the Rival S over the Q5SF. Now… would I take the Rival S over the newer Walther variant, the PDP SF Match… no
@@TheGentlemanGunner I totally understand now. I think I reacted you your mid video comment on the walther. Nonetheless, I picked up a Rival S chrome yesterday. Today I put about 150 flawless rounds through it. It is a smooth and straight shooter. I went with the medium grip, the longest mag release and I added a red dot. I’ll try it out at the weekly IDPA event next week. I think I’m going to like it a lot.
Nice comparison. I definitely appreciated the "from a competition shooter's" point of view. And especially the HF scoring approach to a quantitative comparison. I've been shooting a Rival in USPSA CO for almost a year. I just finished setting up my new Rival-S with all the same upgrades and optics as my Rival. I am really looking forward to seeing how my own quantitative comparison turns out. :)
Hello, which model would you recommend for target shooting, Rival or Rival-S steel, which would you recommend? Thank you very much in advance. Have a nice day.
@@TheGentlemanGunner Thank you very much for your reply. I will take your suggestion into consideration and buy the Rival-S steel model. The subject of the video is very good, sir, we would like your videos to increase, I wish you a good day.
There’s not a grain size limit… to keep simple… I would recommend either SuperVel 147 or Black Dot 147. I found this load to be the most favorable both In return to zero and felt recoil
I’ve been competing with the polymer rival for a few months, and had the chance to handle the steel frame a few times, and honestly I kind of like the polymer frame better. My recoil control is pretty squared away already, but it’s my target transitions that need work, and the lighter gun is much easier to whip around for me Also based on what guys who run the steel frame have told me that one has some teething issues that aren’t present in the polymer model
So my question for you and everybody else is that if you could buy the Walther Q5 SF and Canik Rival S for both $1100 each, which would you pick?? Ik the Canik is much cheaper so everybody wants one but what if they were the exact same price then which would you take?
Really enjoyed the content presented in the video. Do you think the current PDP Pro SD full size be competitive with the SFX-S? Guessing the PDP Pro SD might be a little lighter with the Polymer frame and more comparable to the Rival SFX polymer? The trigger on the PDP Pro is excellent and the magwell forces my hand into a natural position. Would the Magwell be legal in Carry Optics?
For me … The PDP would be a choice for me if Ergonomics were the highest priority as they fill out my hands nicer and have ideal grip from the factory. From a shooting experience, I’d have to give the edge to both Rivals as even the Polymer SFX is a tad softer on the recoil. If we’re talking about the PDP Pro… I haven’t measured it… but if They’re the same dimensions as the one that comes on the Q5 SF… they’d be legal for CO in IDPA as it fits in the box.
@@TheGentlemanGunner Thank you for the detailed reply. Super helpful! I gotta see if I can source a Rival SFX-S. Do you prefer the hard chrome or black? Just curious.
It does the job especially when paired with the Rival S. Window is fairly wide and the Dot is sufficient…not a crisp as maybe an SRO per say… but I’m not particularly picky about dots.
I wonder how the regular Rival with a tungsten guide rod/brass backstrap would fare in this comparison?? The added weight makes it only 4-5oz lighter than the Rival-S.
Probably would make a difference in both felt recoil and muzzle rise. Assuming they had the identical characteristics in recoil… I still would prefer the Rival S due to the less tolerance stacking in the trigger… produces a generally positive feel and consistency due to having the metal sear housing… ingredients that lead to confidence
Hi, first thanks for the video. Did you change the recoil spring from the Canik SFX Rival S? Someone mentioned you can only shoot factory ammo with the original recoil spring and the gun won’t work with softer loads which we shoot in matches. Di you have any experience in this matter?
@@TheGentlemanGunnerI appreciate your opinion and would like ask you a last question. How I can see from your videos you’re competing with a Shadow 2 as well. In your opinion is there a big difference between the Shadow 2 and the Canik Rival S ? I‘ve been competing with a Glock 17 Gen 3 for a while and wanted to change my gun but now I‘m in a predicament between the Shadow 2 and the Rival S. I‘d love to hear your opinion
I have both the rival dark side and rival s chrome and the dark side slide is easier to grip. Definitely a finish issue with chrome. But love the way the chrome looks so much better and sexy lol. The rival s trigger is definitely better than rival and less recoil than rival.
I haven’t. We now have a fair amount of shooters that shoot them locally. I’d say out of 6-7 or so that shoot them… I’m only aware of one shooter that has had FTF issues… which could be ammo or mag related
I just got a rival s and it is malfunctioning like crazy. There’s failure to feed and eject. The round doesn’t chamber well because it can get stuck on the feed ramp and the shells were not leaving the chamber.
You were like" i like the canik for this, and for this, i also like the canik for this and that to, and that is a tie but i do prefer the canik for this, that and all of those, however i would get the walther" 😂😂😂

How about replacement parts for the Canick, I know were to go for the Walther ?
Nice comparison. I definitely appreciated the "from a competition shooter's" point of view. And especially the HF scoring approach to a quantitative comparison.
I've been shooting a Rival in USPSA CO for almost a year. I just finished setting up my new Rival-S with all the same upgrades and optics as my Rival. I am really looking forward to seeing how my own quantitative comparison turns out. :)
Hello, which model would you recommend for target shooting, Rival or Rival-S steel, which would you recommend? Thank you very much in advance. Have a nice day.
Rival S (steel frame)
@@TheGentlemanGunner Thank you very much for your reply. I will take your suggestion into consideration and buy the Rival-S steel model. The subject of the video is very good, sir, we would like your videos to increase, I wish you a good day.
Great Video, Like the comparison. What is the rifle shown in the Match Video ?
It’s a Custom PPC made by my Range @mission160range … they make them specifically for competing and weigh less than 5lbs with an optic
@@TheGentlemanGunner It looks great, Thanks
New to IDPA. Is there a limit on the grain size? Or have opinions on which is the best? Buying the Rival S. Thanks ahead of time
There’s not a grain size limit… to keep simple… I would recommend either SuperVel 147 or Black Dot 147. I found this load to be the most favorable both In return to zero and felt recoil
@The Gentleman Gunner Thank you for the quick reply. I loved the format of the review, definitely subbing. Keep up the good work!
I’ve been competing with the polymer rival for a few months, and had the chance to handle the steel frame a few times, and honestly I kind of like the polymer frame better. My recoil control is pretty squared away already, but it’s my target transitions that need work, and the lighter gun is much easier to whip around for me
Also based on what guys who run the steel frame have told me that one has some teething issues that aren’t present in the polymer model
Could you compare the canik rivals with the CZ Shadow 2?
Possibly 😬
@@TheGentlemanGunner Thanks!
Great review! Can you compare the sig x5 legion or the specter comp to the rival s and maybe the shadow 2! Thank you!
Great list. I've heard a TONE of good things about the Canik company. Have you had a chance to shoot Walther's new Match steel frame 5inch pistol yet.
I’m currently testing and evaluating the PDP Match Steel Frame as of this writing! Video is coming soon
@@TheGentlemanGunner Good morning. 👍. Look forward to your review
Any Canik will do,thank you ❤
So my question for you and everybody else is that if you could buy the Walther Q5 SF and Canik Rival S for both $1100 each, which would you pick?? Ik the Canik is much cheaper so everybody wants one but what if they were the exact same price then which would you take?
Rival S… Q5 SF has also been out for 4-5 years… so the Rival S is all those learning lessons summarized today
I love the Walther
Compared to an M&P with apex?
@@gair1944 definitely the Black finish. My concern about gripping the slide went away when I handled a black one
Thinking of getting a rival to go with my p10f
Woot! Alright I’m here for it! Let’s talk about it.
This is a great review tanks
I would like to see what you think of the PDP, PDP match and PDP match steel frame
Me too lol… got to hold the PDP SF and it feels familiar yet nicer.
How is the Mecanik mo2?? Can't find any review of it at all from a comp perspective 😞
It does the job especially when paired with the Rival S. Window is fairly wide and the Dot is sufficient…not a crisp as maybe an SRO per say… but I’m not particularly picky about dots.
@@TheGentlemanGunner Thanks dude, hard to pass up when its only $150 more for the kit
Great vid man. I see you still love that aluminum ammo. Hit me up when you are back in Florida.
I have a reputation for using aluminum ammo that I have to uphold 😂😂😂
Hi, first thanks for the video.
Did you change the recoil spring from the Canik SFX Rival S?
Someone mentioned you can only shoot factory ammo with the original recoil spring and the gun won’t work with softer loads which we shoot in matches. Di you have any experience in this matter?
Nope. Unless they’re steel challenge rounds… this gun had zero issues cycling the lighter loads
@@TheGentlemanGunner have you had any other issues with Rival S?
@@sertman3333 nope. In my other video I did on it… I had a stovepipe… but was undercharged round… so no issues Gun related
@@TheGentlemanGunner thanks man👍
@@TheGentlemanGunnerI appreciate your opinion and would like ask you a last question.
Where is the Walther Q5 match polymer for this comparison?
It never ceases to amaze me the shit people complain about in the comments. Enjoyed the video. Thanks for the review.
Hey Paul, What adapter plate is that under the SRO on the Q5? It looks crazy high.
That is the factory plate
@@TheGentlemanGunner Thank you, Sir! By the way, nicely done! I didn't know you were the Gentleman Gunner! Ha!
I have both the rival dark side and rival s chrome and the dark side slide is easier to grip. Definitely a finish issue with chrome. But love the way the chrome looks so much better and sexy lol. The rival s trigger is definitely better than rival and less recoil than rival.
Have you run into the reliability issues I’ve been hearing of for the rival S?
Did you get your issues resolved and what was the fix?
Can you replace the sear housing in the standard Rival with a metal one?
@michaelmoreno4968 what do you think?
You were like" i like the canik for this, and for this, i also like the canik for this and that to, and that is a tie but i do prefer the canik for this, that and all of those, however i would get the walther" 😂😂😂
How did you get that out of this video? 😂
I apologize bro, I swear i think im living in an alternate universe because i watched the gatman video on these 2 guns and i thought i replied to his video with this message because he said he preferred the Walther if the price was the same but liked all the things about the canik!!😲😱🤯
@@ClaynZaycaz it’s all good my dude, I appreciate you watching! Get out there and crush it 👊🏻😎
@@TheGentlemanGunner How gentle a reaction. True marksmanship lies in character. Thanks for this great video....I subscribed readily.
The Rival S has had some reliability issues. The Canik Rival sfx polymer does require more training to control harder recoil but is WAY more reliable.
First time hearing that
I hv 3 caniks. 2 Elite Combat. All hv the same issue. Click, no bang. And Fail to return to battery. Including the Rival.
I have an PDP and when I test the Q5 the grip is shorter - In IPSC production you are not allowed to have an that magwell. Is the caniks grip longer ??
That’s a good point. Yes the grip is slightly longer on the Caniks. Great question
Yup. Short grip completely ruined the Walther for me. It’s very weird they basically put a compact grip length on their steel competition pistol.
I have a ? That may not be relevant to the video.I really want a canik sfx rival s but have seen so many bad videos of ftf and fte. Also i see the overinsertion issues that many people have as well.I really want this gun for uspsa!
So is your question… should you get one considering some challenges people have had with them?
Should I get the sfx rival or rival s?
What is most important to you?
Is CO biggest in IDPA now? I thought it's still SSP
Yes and has been for both my area and Nats for the past couple of years. Upcoming Space Coast Challenge in FL has 118 CO and 33 SSP. Can change by area, but the general consensus at most major matches is CO is the Larger of the 2
👍
This is Clint for Classic fire Arm…… wait a minute 😑 LOL
I need to watch that channel some day… this is the second comment I’ve gotten on that 😂
Raise your intro audio level higher than the rest of the video, it wasn't quite loud enough
Nice review. As far as a tip, bring your beard down an inch to break up the round shape of your head.
I love my Caniks.....however there customer service from Century arms leaves much to be desired.
Turkish is beautiful ❤❤❤
I was going to smash the subscribe button but the texture was to slick and my finger kept coming off so I guess it needs to be stippled.
Pulling out the soldering iron 😁
He says about the Canik Rival polymer: “You have to work a little harder to extrapulate performance out of the gun.” 😂😂😂
Should've added the Q5 polymer frame. My current rig.
Decent video if the creator wouldn’t say “with that said” every 20 seconds.
