  • Want to learn how to leave your Great Dane dog home alone? Whether they're a puppy or adult, leaving your dog home alone can sometimes result in destructive behavior. This is especially true for Great Danes who can be prone to separation anxiety.
Follow these simple tips to learn how to properly prepare your home and provide your dog with the necessary (appropriate) distractions while you're away. Slowly increase the time that you leave them alone to allow them to adjust to the process. Once they show success, you can experiment with allowing them more access inside your home.
Our secret trick is to stuff Kong toys with peanut butter and then freeze them so that they act as a tasty treat for your dog to distract themselves with while you're gone. For dogs with extreme cases of anxiety, you can also consider leveraging CBD oils to help ease their nerves. However, make sure to consult with your veterinarian before giving your dog CBD.

It took me about 6 months for my Dane to feel comfortable being left alone. If I don't say bye and be a good boy, he will wine until I do and when I get home, I say hello, have you been a good boy? then I walk around to see if he got into anything. If all is good, he gets a reward. When he does get into something, he will hide and act very shy thus giving himself up as he has that guilty look on his face.

@@mikaelafielgomate4739 I started leaving for 1 minute then went longer and longer BUT I always said good bye, be a good boy and I'll be back really soon. Now I can leave for 6-8 hours and theres no problems. Most of the time, I'm gone for 2-3 hours. Only ever had 2 accidents and it's been 4 years now.

I used a digital dog sitter! Helped us greatly. U can see live footage of what the dog is doing and if he howls or makes some noices, the dog sitter playbacks tapes that we have recorded. U can also speak to ur dog with it ( for example, ill leave the dog sitter on my laptop and i can monitor and interact with it through my phone where ever i am)
Edit: now hes completely fine being left alone while im at work! Hes also 1 and half years old blue dane boy

When you leave them "home alone" you will be better off leaving your curtains or blinds open so they can see outside. It lets them view you departing and returning without destroying your window coverings. Also in the beginning start training your Dane to lay down outside a closed room door. They will whine and cry until you come out of the room however it will help them relax and understand that when you leave the house you will be returning. I have owned 5 of these majestic animals, good luck!

A friend of a friend gave us our first Great Dane 5 days ago. Abbey is 4 months old and about 45 lbs. Already crate-trained, thank goodness, but we don't use if very much. We also already have 4 dogs (10-yo Lab, 5-to fox terrier, 3-yo chihuahua, and 1+1/2-yo Shi Tzu), as well as 4 in-and-out kitties! What a wonderful family! I'm a senior with no grandkids and my grown son lives with me. We both have high-functioning autism and are so much more comfortable with animals than with people . The first 4 dogs and 2 of the cats sleep in the bed with my son, and last night I let Abbey sleep with me for the first time! She is REALLY a good dog! So blessed to have her added to our tribe. And SO glad I found this channel! Thank you for making it and for all the Dane lovers who give such good comments!

yes and consistency is a key tool too. We always said "Be right back" whether it was a trial drive away or to go see a movie and when we returned we consciously tried not to have any bigger "reunion actions" than if we just woke up. Read "Gina Goes to Galveston..." and see when she played with "Mr TP" one day! Cheers, Doc Willis

I fill up horns w/natural PB (dump off the oil 1st) & then freeze them. I can usually refreeze this if I’m careful to make sure they’re thick enough. I don’t do hoofs anymore as they’re too hard on their teeth. I’ve had Dane’s for 50 yrs (my parents had them B4 I was born.) I’ve been giving them frozen PB for the last 20 yrs.

Hi Zach, can you please make a video on the topic of gastropexy? Has Gus had the surgery? If yes, how old was she at the time, and do you find it a worthy solution to avoid bloating?
Our vet clinic swears by it, but they also insisted that our girl should get spayed as early as 6 months old and we found out through our own research that it is paramount for their bladder and hormonal growth to be allowed to experience their first heat and menstruations before getting spayed. Then on the subject of gastropexy, we are again researching on our own before making the best decision. Can you please share your perspective? Thank you for your awesome content!

Our girl is weird. She is NOT a fan of PB, sweet potato nor yogurt!
Now - cheese is a different story; cottage cheese, cream cheese, cheddar, havarti, brie .....
And of course meat - but no sauces !
So, our Kong, and all toys that food can be stuffed into, are filled accordingly.
She was totally panicked at the sight of a crate ! So, we left worn (smelly) t-shirts, socks, etc. with her - worked “great”. And calm entrances and exits supports keeps her happy - she brings us toys 🧸

What’s she like inside your home and yard?

    • @kroshka814
      @kroshka814 4 роки тому +2

@@GreatDaneCare she definitely prefers to be off-leash which is not a realistic option. We have a harness and she fights to put it on, biting it and etc. Then when we get outside she just will lay down and cries when we ask her to move. At home she plays and does all other stuff a dog would I suppose.
In addition to the not-walking element, we are also trying to battle through the biting phase as well. I'm reading how Great Danes perceive things and their emotional component, triggers that she may have and noticed that when she's told not to do something or taken away from something that she deemed as hers she bites. For example, we have to take her outside but live on the second floor and she can't use stairs yet so we carry her down. She doesn't want to go down and will bite when we pick her up. Similarly when people are eating at the table and tell her that she can't beg for food, she may bite toes, same for the couch.

Take her outside and make sure she poops before you put her in the crate at night. I personally dislike crates, so perhaps putting up a baby gate in the kitchen to let her sleep in there might save you from having to clean a huge mess every morning since she likely will sleep away from any accidents instead of rolling in them. Training her to go on a puppy pad if she has to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night would help as well (if she is not crated).
