@@theloudguysmovies So this whole movie is set in the southern part of America. Specifically Georgia in the 1930s so their accent, is southern. Accept for Del who is cajun creole, which is a different southern dilectc in the state Louisiana. Creole combines English, French, African, and Native American language into one. If you notice Paul makes the comment "your English gets better when you want something" as a lot of people in small towns across Louisiana speak only creole. Love your channel ❤

    • @jimballard1186
      @jimballard1186 2 роки тому

They're not contaminants; they're demons. In Christian mythology, disease, injury, and death are caused by demons that God allows to afflict humanity as punishment for Adam and Eve's sins. John Coffey is Jesus Christ, whose mind has been destroyed by the weight of his sacrifice accepting punishment for all of mankind's sins but who still has the power to lay hands on the injured and remove their suffering by exorcising the demons afflicting them. The demons appear as insects because in Christian mythology, they are under the command of the demon prince Beelzebub, whose title is 'Lord of the Flies.'
The story is basically about Stephen King's experience with Evangelical Christianity as a child. It's much more explicit in the book than the movie.

It’s made a little clearer in the book, but Mr. Jingles the mouse wasn’t quite dead yet when John healed him. The two girls were too far gone, dead too long, when John found them which is why he failed.

Both Green Mile and "The Shawshank Redemption" are Stephen King stories directed by Frank Darabont and about prison, so definitely do Shawshank next. But don't research it!! There may be spoilers that will ruin surprises in the movie. The Shawshank Redemption is considered by most to be even better than Green Mile. You'll both enjoy Shawshank a lot too!
6:59 The name of that move is "Top Hat" (1936) and is one of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers many musical comedies.
37:08 The "Cassie... lady in the rocking chair" John was referring to is the constellation Cassiopeia, located not too far from the North Star.
And when you're in for another scifi do "The Martian" (2015) someday, an excellent movie! 🖖😎

You guys are so sweet. This movie takes place in 1932 or 1933. At that time, very few houses in the country had indoor bathrooms. People went to the toilet in an outhouse, usually at the back of the property. The only running water was in the kitchen. Bedrooms would have had a wash table with a pitcher of water and a basin for washing hands and face, and there would have been a chamber pot for relieving oneself at night. I live in a house that was built in 1920, or possibly earlier, in a small town in the country. This house did not have an indoor bathroom installed until around 1960.
In the early 1930s, there was no treatment for urinary tract infections because there were no antibiotics yet, so going to a different doctor wouldn't have helped. I don't know much about sulfa drugs, but if Tom Hanks' character was allergic to them, he couldn't take them.

... and I'll say this...The actor that played "Percy Whittmore" is the TRUE definition of doing one's job TOO well! Lol! He knocked this performance out of the park. He reeeeally made you despise him... This character had absolutely ZERO redeeming qualities... and saying that Michael Clarke Duncan as "John Coffey" was simply magic (pun intended) is an understatement. The amount of phenomenal performances in this film was unprecedented. It was almost too much; a spoil of riches, as they say.

Sam Rockwell (Wild Bill) is a very versatile actor. I recommend seeing him in "Matchstick Men," "Moon," "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," and "GalaxyQuest" (the latter title after watching some original, classic "Star Trek" movies because it pays homage to that franchise and you will then understand the jokes).

while I believe this is true, we can't ignore that our society at that time was deep in the grips of white supremacy as a foundation of our laws and our dominant culture; this was the era of Jim Crow laws, a strong resurgence of the KKK, and movies of men in black face portraying black men as animalistic predators, specifically as rapists of white women. so a lawyer dehumanizing a black man to explain his presumed criminality as if it's practically to be expected is deeply culturally significant to the era

Families are invited to their relation's execution but I think they seldom attend. The witnesses of the execution are usually relatives of the victims AND local and state officials in the prison system. The timeframe of the movie is just a bit before antibiotics were widely available, so Paul had to suffer with his urinary tract infection. John is a child of nature, hence his happiness when smelling the handsfull of leaves and grass and seeing the constellation Cassiopeia (John says, "Cassie"). And John is most certainly NOT an imbecile, is he.

    1. YOU WILL CRY
    2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie".
    3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935.)
    4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row.
    5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.
    6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist,
Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse:
    The Langoliers.
    7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream.
    8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegetarian and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but
was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill.
    9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of being Percy.👌
    10. A little fun fact: Toot Toot the trustee is played by Harry Dean Stanton.(RIP) The other guards' names are Harry Terwilliger/Jeffery DeMunn
    and Dean Stanton/Barry Pepper.
    11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography to make John taller.
12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution they used a real mouse and it pooped on Paul's shoulder and he brushed it off.
    13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for.
14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced
    the GREATEST MOVIE EVER.

I agree about Jenny in Forest Gump.. Yes, she had a trouble childhood, which is the reasoning why she kept making bad decisions. But they are still bad decisions that she shouldn't have made. She willfully kept making wrong decisions, which ultimately caused her death. And she didn't decide to make the right decisions until she knew she was dying, in which it was more convenient for her.

    * The "audience" for the execution is normally the family/loved ones of the person/people the person being executed killed.
    * In the rural south (where this movie is set) back in 1935 the restrooms were "pit toilets" outside the house.
    * John is such a simple man that the smell of the soil and leaves makes him happy.
    * Billy the kid killed 3 people during a robbery. One of them a pregnant woman.
    * They don't MAKE the family watch the killer be executed. They *WANT* to be there.
    * In the book it is suggested that John could have been up to 1000 years old. The scars were from his days as a slavery, which ended 60-70 years BEFORE this movie is set.

Many people have a hard time feeling for Jenny's character; but when you understand that Jenny didnt know how to love in a healthy and dependable way because of her upbringing in a very abusive unstructured way she only knew how to run from love because the love she recieved was destructive. Forrest provided stability ....something she could not trust ....it took time for her to learn to believe and accept the love from Forrest.

Interesting bit of trivia: If we take the life of Mr. Jingles as an example who lived about 32 times longer than a typical mouse (64 years vs 2), then Paul should live past the year 4000. Stephen King (the author of this) has said that John Coffey's initials are a clue about who and what he really is. This movie follows the book very closely. One of the best adaptations ever.

After watching literally hundreds of movie reactions it has become clear to me, particularly in this video, that reactionary commentary , while mandatory, is by function, a serious immersion breaker (for the reactors). I can't think of how else to explain how people can watch movies like this and not cry like a baby.
It's either that or people have hearts of stone. But refuse to believe that.

There’s a lot of parallels between John Coffey and Jesus-both traveled the land helping strangers; the healing miracles; they both died in horrible ways while people watched; the initials; the last supper meal he had and the halo effect when he watched the “flicker show” for the first time and everyone associated with John’s death dies in the book other than Paul, but it’s implied that he doesn’t have much time left so he’ll die too

  • @nobodyshome

They say "Dead Man Walking" even today... the reason is it is a warning to everyone around that the man has nothing to fear anymore and that makes him more dangerous than anyone else... he is going to die and killing or beating someone else to death means nothing now as they are dying anyway. Like we see in many movies like John Wick... a man who has nothing to live for is the deadliest man alive...
Percy was shown with the book about caring for the mentally ill and the porn inside to show what he really wanted to do at Briarridge. The rape of mental patients is still an issue in instutions today.
People watching are mainly the Jury who passed sentence. Most often so they know the severity of the judgement they must watch the execution. Also victims and families will watch if they choose to.
