Geoff (the bass guy, who arranged this song) had initially intended for the guitar solo to be done completely vocally, but then ended up asking Layne if he could do it on violin instead. I think it was the right decision, it added that little something extra on top to really give that guitar solo the respect it needed. Names from left to right: Geoff (pronounced Jeff) on bass. J.None (visiting guest, but former member) on baritone. Eli (rhymes with jelly) on rock tenor. Cesar on baritenor. Layne on beatboxing, violin and baritone.
Thank you for an awesome reaction to Voice Play never tell Voice Play it can't be done. They always find a way to stay true to the original while putting their own spin on it. Please do a reaction video of Voice Plays cover Dream On, originally by Aerosmith. Voice Play knocks it out of the ball park. Cesar, the guy with the big hair is the one who hits the high note at the end.
I have posted this comment on a couple other channels, and I will leave it here too, because I get the impression this is your first time listening to Voiceplay. (Sorry if I'm wrong!) If this is your first experience with Voiceplay, allow me to introduce you to the boys! left to right, we have: Geoff Castellucci (pronounced "Jeff") Human subwoofer bass with an amazing 5 octave range and perfect hair...also does about half their arrangements. J. None (former full member, currently in the navy.) Beautiful R&B Baritone, and collaborates with them whenever he is on leave. Hopefully he returns when he is out of the navy! Eli Jacobsen (Pronounced "Elly" like "jelly) little bald rockstar tenor. Does most of the lighting for their videos. There is nothing this guy can't do! SO. MUCH. TALENT! Cesar De La Rosa: Newest member of the group...voice of an angel baritone/tenor amazingness! And last but not least, Layne Stein...vocal percussion voodoo master with an amazing singing voice we don't get to hear enough of. The other half of the group's arranging "dynamic duo". Just sheer genius! And he plays the violin too! Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit-hole! I love hearing people discover them for the first time. They always cover really unexpected songs and make them absolutely brilliant! Enjoy!
Their Viking songs are epic. It starts with My Mother Told Me, but the last release is Valhalla Calling from Assassin's Creed and will blow your mind. Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean was the one they did that first broke UA-cam. These guys don't have limits. Geoff just released Sound of Silence on his solo channel and it's absolutely stunning. You'll hear his entire 5 octave range there.
Geoff - bass singer and walking bass guitar - has said "no one told us we COULDN'T do it", so they did it. :) That how they are. Always up for a challenge even when there isn't one. LOL
It's always fun watching someone react to Voiceplay for the first time. We always know what's coming next and giggle a little, knowing that you are going to have your socks knocked off! They can do any genre; rock, pop, broadway, disney, classical, ballad, anything. Some suggestions in addition to what others have mentioned: Golden Hour - a little weird and wonderfully romantic In the Hall of the Mountain King - classical, and screamingly funny, with no lyrics and a trollish storyline I Can't Make You Love Me - will break your heart. Or pick anything, you won't be disappointed, trust me! Subscribed in anticipation!
Let me be the first to welcome you to the wonderful world of voiceplay! If you are interested in seeing other things they've done that are similar, check out their version of Dream On and Carry On Wayward Son. Also, the bass, geoff castellucci, does his own solo stuff as well and he's amazing. 💜
This is my favorite of the 800 and some odd videos I've seen done by VoicePlay. I'm 72 and never had heard it. After hearing VP's version, I found Metallica and listened to the original. I was impressed by the amount of effort that VP put into arranging the music so that it was recogizably the same song introduced by Metallica. It was my birthday song back in January when they introduced this and I'll never get tired of listening to what VP did with this. Of course, I never tire of listening to any of their music but this one is special. I have about 50 or so reactors that I subscribe to - you are one now - and I love watching them be amazed at what VoicePlay can accomplish. Late last year they did Dream On, I Can't Make You Love Me, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Dragonborn Comes Skyrim and their latest is Valhalla Calling as of Friday.
Geoff Castellucci has a 5 octave range. He's absolutely incredible! Check out The Oogie Bogie song. You'll hear not only his earth shaking low notes, You'll hear his high notes, too. Best bass in acapella - Geoff Castellucci.
Appreciate your knowledge of the original, which I'm not overly familiar with. But I don't think you really need to be that familiar with it to appreciate how good VoicePlay sounds doing this. And of course, got a kick out of the "guitar solo" conversation you had with yourself, knowing what was coming! BTW, the "Christmas" a cappella group you were trying to remember is Pentatonix. Some people say that they own Christmas, having 5 or 6 (I lose count) albums of Christmas music to their credit. But in the same way, VoicePlay owns Halloween - they have a number of songs oriented around it, and both VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci (the bass singer, who has a solo channel) usually put out at least one video for it each year. Something to look forward to!
Thanks for the great reaction! Liked, subscribed and hoping to see you react to more VoicePlay. In addition to Dream On and Carry On Wayward Son, you might find their most recent cover interesting - Valhalla Calling.
This same lineup dropped Valhalla Calling a few days ago, sort of a Viking followup to My Mother Told Me from a year ago, with Cesar de la Rosa instead of (guest) Jose Rosario Jr. And I thought they'd have a hard time topping Nothing Else Matter.
That low note (there are five of them) is the same pitch as the first string on a four string bass (E1). Geoff has also hit the lowest note on a five string bass (C1)in his solocover of Elvis' "Way Down". They are subharmonics , not throat singing.
As a Voiceplay fan who never listened to Metallica, I really enjoyed this reaction. You gave us so much information on the history and composition/style of the original. I already loved this cover but you gave me so much more appreciation for it because of your knowledge of and love for the original. Thank you. And you asked about Geoff's bass technique. Yes, he does subharmonics to extend his range lower. Similar but not the same as the throat singing. He does some how to videos on his channel that might explain it better. For more wow from Geoff, check out Voiceplay's latest. For more "violayne", as we call it, check out Voiceplay's cover of Warriors. And you might appreciate Geoff's cover of sound if silence, though it hits very differently than Disturbed's version.
As an older aged metal head, I never thought anyone could make a Metallica song a cappella.. But not only this one, they've covered Aerosmith's Dream on, also Kansas and journey.. They've done country, pop, broadway and Disney among others.... All that's left for me to say is welcome to Voiceplay and subsequently Geoff Castellucci (bass) who has his own channel, (He recently covered Sound of silence, totally different from Disturbed, worth a listen). FYI. Geoff has a 5 octave range with subharmonics.. ❤🇬🇧
Glad you tried acapella a metal cover. Are you ready to try vintage jazz metal? Postmodern Jukebox only does vintage style covers. Guns n Roses Sweet Child of Mine w/ Miche Braden will make you think it's the original.
I agree the 'violin' solo was great!!! Pentatonix (the other band you were thinking of) does a guitar solo with their voices in their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, qhich is also pretty cool....thanks for the reaction!!

You might want to check out Voiceplay's Enemy or their new one Seven Nation Army.
This is what we get when you tell VoicePlay they can't do something acapella. Love Layne aka VIOLAYNE.
Great reaction
Please react to more voiceplay
I recommand you voiceplay Valhalla calling me release 2 days ago please
I did enjoy it, always love watching reactors that have a love for the original. Subscribing in hopes of more VoicePlay!

Yep, that was it. Thanks again for this request.

Guns n Roses Sweet Child of Mine w/ Miche Braden will make you think it's the original.
You want "ungodly" on his vocal range? He's a five-octave vocalist... You should really watch VoicePlay's video for Oogie Boogie Song.

Shades of Paul Giamatti from you!
