    knight vs rook pawn endings is one of the hardest endings to win. the key is to paralyze the king in the corner, forcing your opponent's pawn in front of the king, allowing you to deliver the KO punch.

    The two knights vs pawn ending isn't necessarily winning with best play. It's either a win or a draw depending on how far advanced the pawn is. In fact, the b-pawn in the video is sufficiently advanced (three squares from promoting) for the position to be a theoretical draw. Hikaru's opponent lost the game when he let his king get trapped in the corner. When the position is drawable, the basic technique is:
    Stay away from the corners. If you get pushed to the edge of the board, at least pick a square two or preferably three squares from the nearest corner. When the king and the mobile knight have pushed your king back as far as possible, the knight blockading the pawn will join in. At this point, push your pawn as fast as possible.
    Now, no doubt the clock was a big factor for Hikaru's opponent. I'd imagine he had only a few seconds left and was trying to premove on every move.

    • @s1mon_234
      @s1mon_234 7 місяців тому

      This only works if the opponent has atleast 1 pawn or it will be a draw by stalemate. And leaving them a pawn is risky, if you don't know how to checkmate them fast enough or they will promote before you checkmate. If you picked up all his pawns by accident, then he shouldnt resign, because you can't win anymore

      @antsatuisku 7 місяців тому +1

      Two knights is by far harder. If you have bishop, knight and king vs king endgame, checkmating can be very tricky but It's possible. If you have two knights and king vs king endgame, then forcing checkmate is impossible, if your opponent don't have any pawn left, and even if your opponent has the pawn it has to be on certain square to be able force a checkmate. Not to mention that even if there is a forced mate with two knights, it can take over 50 moves to checkmate your opponent.
