Hi from Ontario Canada. Yes balaclavas are essential. Merino wool makes excellent base layers. Turtlenecks or neck buffs are good to block the wind. Those hand warmers in packages will fit under gloves to keep hands warm if you do not have heated grips. The roads are not as good for traction even when dry below 45f.

wool may be warm but it feels awful, just say no to wool

@plap. Merino wool is soft and has no itch. Wool also will stay warm if it's wet. Cotton will sap the heat out of you if it gets sweaty.

Merino wool is also great because it wont overheat if it suddenly isnt as cold as you expected. Also from Ontario, still going strong

The only thing I'm still considering getting is heated grips or gloves, in winter I only do commutes to work by motorcycle but with heavy traffic that can still take over 30 minutes and by that point my hands do get quite cold. That aside I just wear my regular textile gear with inner layers, my winter gloves, same basic touring boots I wear in summer, a neck gaiter and the biggest change is I just wear my rain suit over my gear at all times because it keeps the cold out. Sure it doesn't look as good as having your proper gear exposed but it does the trick without the need to spend more money

Went to the University of Utah where all I had was a BMW R1150R. Heated gloves, heated liner, and a balaclava was all I needed. Snowing with accumulation was the only time I’d need to take public transportation. Other than that, I rode my bike.

You can get a wind/water proof liner for any jacket. I ride in various hoodies with a joe rocket windproof liner and base layers.
    Balaclava helps tremendously
heated grips if you cant stand thicc winter gloves

Living in the Netherlands wet and cold is just what we call monday. My best cold weather gear.
    - Heated grips (Drystars don't cut it)
    - balaclava
    - thermal underwear
    - thick socks
I've actually ridden in a summer jacket in winter. Good thermal underwear and a thick hoody underneeth goes a long way.
    Also a cheap plastic rainsuit!

I agree I always would ride in the -10C range and the only thing that I found I needed was a heated vest liner and just keep covered the best you can even with summer gear. No one knows the pain of 1000 cuts until you have ridden in freezing rain and it hits your neck. The vest helped a lot because it heats your torso so your body can pump the warm blood to your extremities without needing to actually heat them

Thanks for the Video ! I lived in Austria (Alps baby) and now in Sweden. I also use a sheep's wool fur on my seat as well as some pocket warmer for my gloves when i take a break during my trip. But the Balaclava is my go go asscessoire in the winter hands down. Dont forget the Merino Wool Socks :)

Good vid....iIn Southern Ontario we are used to the cold, however the showstopper for us is the black ice and heavily salted roads. Both are deadly, 1 to the rider and the other to the bike.

I live in Bergen Norway and ride all year round. I don't even have heated grips on my intruder. But I do have a good thick Dihi jacket and pants. My gloves are thick cheap winter gloves. They're not great but do the job. But it has to be said that it doesn't get super cold here in Bergen. It mostly rain during the winter. But I prefer rain over snow 😂

It was 37° this morning, and I rode for almost 2 hours before stopping at a gas station for some hot coffee. My hands always get cold after an hour or so even with my windproof waterproof winter gloves on.. Sometimes, I put hand warmers inside for longer trips.

I recommend getting heated gloves. At some point, even if you have nice warm gloves. They will chill, then it's basically just like standing outside in a little colder weather cause of the wind chill. Putting your hands on the motor at every stop light to get feeling back into your fingers.

Soo, im driving into -10°C (for all the antimetric Americans about 15 F) and for me a Motorcycle Winter Jacket (REV'IT Neptune 2 GTX) with a Pullover, T-Shirt and a thermo layer is barely enough at these temperatures. It is to be noted, as long as its snowy ore icy outside I do not ride

Riding in to work in 21f tomorrow morning🥶 i know its not as cold as some other places but coming from the eest coast to eastern NC is cold for me and do the math at 21f at 80mph wind chill is going to suck. I've been investing in winter gear over the last two years but some things are pricey.(plus kids 🤑🤑🤑) next is heated grips to go with my heated gloves

  • @martonlerant5672

As far as heat source for gear goes, onenof the best solutions is water heated by a exhaust waste heat.
Small dirtbikes (for example) dont have enough electricity production to reliably operate a heated jacket + lamp + fuelnpump + ...etc.
It works by having rubber pipingnin a bottom layer, which have a quick disconnect hosemto attach to a heat transfer elemnt you screw onto the outside of your exhaust.

It absolutely matters what brand base layer you get. Not because of who makes them, but because of what they’re made out of. A cotton long John base layer is going to be garbage, compared to a merino wool, or even polyester, base layer, because cotton retains almost none of its insulating factor once it’s wet.

That was my first bike, it's nice! looks really nice (baby R6) but with the same seat height near enough. I had zero issues with mine which was back in 2015 my model came from 09 so one of the first generation bikes and i was very happy it had room to grow looked great with mods and i heard very little in ways of issue with the electronics or engine. Overall a pretty sound bike!
Also really easy to maintain all fearings and bits came off with no hassle! all the best with your first bike.
