This is great man. Good improvement. And trust me we've all been there tensing up under the gun. I'm really happy to hear you're doing intonation long tones with Tonal Energy. Too many people skip that. It shows in your tone. I think all your next goals should be about getting off of the page. Being able to play tunes, scales, and chord changes properly out of your head. But I'm not sure how far along you are on that road or if that's just too much right here right now. Keep up the good work. 🙌
Hey Peter thanks for the follow-up comment. Im defintely trying to loosen up a little while I play. I can play some scales out of my head but not much more then that. Your not the 1st person ive heard recommend memorizing sone stuff so i will keep that in mind as i move forward. Cheers!
@@saxophoneevolution That's great. Couple things: 1. I posted a response video to another new player's video on my channel, you may get some mileage out of that, but I think a lot of it might be out of reach for where you're currently at. 2. Would it be helpful if I posted some basic theory stuff, how to think about keys/scales/chords? Because I'm more than happy to if you would find it useful. Also happy to do like a Hangouts or whatever video call, might be easier to do a direct Q&A on that stuff to get you going. Let me know.
You are correct about not aiming to be John Coltrane or Dexter Gordon. Both of them were not aiming to be Lester Young or Charlie Parker either. They were aiming to be themselves, as you should be. Your aim with playing should be to feel like you are speaking or singing because you are only playing one tone at a time just like when speaking or singing. I don't know if any teacher has told you this yet. Like vocalizing, it won't happen naturally if your head is full of extraneous thoughts or tensions. Like vocalizing, you should also be developing your range of dynamics, piano to forte, as you play. It is why Prez said learning the lyrics to songs was so important. Balancing dynamics makes your playing meaningful. Listening is as important as playing. Anyway, the main thing is enjoying the process, which you seem to be doing just fine.
@@Simon.the.Likeable Thank you very much. I've been making it a point to listen to Dexter and Coltrane on my commute to work. I like how you explained vocalizing/singing. My teacher says, "try to make it sound musical," even stuff like practicing scales. Thanks for chiming in. Cheers!
Keep going buddy 👍 your doing great
