Week 68 Tenor Sax - G.A.S. (Gear Acquiring Syndrome)
In this video I talk about G.A.S. (gear acquiring syndrome). What it is, how it affected me personally, and why adults might be prone to fall into it more than younger players.

    Hey, I have a question, how come you decided to start with tenor sax not alto or soprano? People say alto sax is the easiest to play, which I also play. Also, do you have a sax teacher or you learn by yourself?

    • @saxophoneevolution
      @saxophoneevolution 5 днів тому

      @@itsbuddy6802 I would like to branch out to alto and sop later on in life, but as to why I picked tenor to start, it wasn't for any profound reason. I only wanted to try Sax because it was very different from what I had tried in the past: guitar, violin, piano. I was never able to stick with those, but the desire to play an instrument has been with me all of my life. I picked tenor for silly reasons mainly because adults are able to play a larger instrument whereas children cannot and therefore usually start with alto. Also I read online that tenor has a darker, deeper sound, which sounded cool to me. Honestly though, it was pretty whimsical as to why I picked tenor over alto or sop, and it's hard for me to nail down my exact reasoning at the time. I guess I liked the idea, and thought it sounded cool. I do have a Sax teacher and I began taking lessons pretty shortly after I began renting a tenor saxophone. In the beginning I was fortunate enough to take a 30min lesson every week. But the. My work schedule changed and for the last 9 months I take a 30min lesson every other week. I think having a teacher definitely helps and is recommended, especially in the beginning. Hope that helps, cheers.

    Good video and nice introspection about GAS. We’ve all been there. In my younger days I went through the usual list of mouthpieces at the time. Some of it was part of the process of finding the right mouthpiece but make no mistake a good bit of it was gas as well. Nothing quite stings like buying that mouthpiece you think is going to transform your playing and realizing it didn’t. However one of those mouthpieces I ended up loving after I learned how to not be a classical player trying to play on a contemporary mouthpiece. The journey is long. Try not to let gas get you too much and always be honest with yourself.

    • @saxophoneevolution
      @saxophoneevolution 6 днів тому

      Hey Sephiroth it's nice to hear your experience related to Gas and how it affected you. Like you said, you did end up finding a mouthpiece you loved, but from the sound of it, it took a lot of trial and error. I feel like the newer a player is, the riskier Gas can be because they are kind of 'wandering in the dark' so to speak. For me the hunt for better and better gear has been one of the more exciting aspects of learning saxophone, but one of the avoidable pitfalls as well. Thanks for taking the time to share your own experience with me 🤙.

    Hey dude I said some advice on ur earlier video. I think you're pretty good but if you learn to tongue you will see a huge difference. Also, once you do that and practice long tones, overtones, etc. You should look into getting a nice jazz mouthpiece (probably 6*) as I think you primarily play jazz?

    It's great to hear you're studying Gregs lesson books. I'm a professional saxophonist, and i would like to comment on some things you can do. The first thing and the most important thing is your tone. You need a larger tip opening on your mouthpiece so you can get more air through the horn. Next, you need to practice long tones with dynamics. Soft loud, and loud to soft. I noticed almost no dynamics in your playing, and the sound is very thin. You want to add more core to the tone. Most beginners start with a soft reed and go up in strength as they develop. Your pitch was good, so i think you can handle a larger tip opening. Mouthpieces are assigned tip opening sizes. I play an 8 star, but i've been playing a long time. I use a reed strength of 2.5. A great sax player to listen to is Michael Brecker. He also played a 2.5 reed strength and could achieve super human technique. I taught music for 30 years and have been retired now for a while, but i still gig and play close to 200 dates a year. I hope you have fun and get really great on that tenor sax. You have excellent potential. Make sure you practice every day so you can achieve strength and muscle memory. Long tones are a great way to start your practice. As you become more advanced, look into voicing and overtones for developing all the partials of each pitch produced. DR Wally Wallace has some great overtone development exercises on line. Good luck, and enjoy your music journey. Patrick Marino😊

      @saxophoneevolution 2 місяці тому

      @@patrickmarino8601 Hello Patrick thanks for taking the time to provide me with your thoughts on my playing. I have begun working more on long tones related to dynamics. I understand what you mean about volume. As far as tone I am planning on buying a larger-tip-opening mouthpiece sometime in 2025 probley. I've heard of Michael brecked but I'll have to find some of his music to download and listen to I agree with you that consistent practice is so important. I am enjoying this journey and also getting feedback on my videos. It's especially nice to hear from pro's like yourself. Cheers!

    I did the Balam impulse buy as well . No matter how I adjust it it pulls down so the cord it is still putting pressure on my neck ...not cool . The only one I haven't bought is the Jazz Lab which actually sounds the best .I have the Neotech harness which I like for my tenor but it restricts horn movement. Thanks so much for your review !

    • @saxophoneevolution
      @saxophoneevolution 2 місяці тому

      @@thomaschurch3379 I can actually recommend the Jazz lab because it's the only harness I've used for the last 9 months or so. It's a little awkward to play sitting but I've become use to it now. I play tenor also, and the horn is is heavy so the Balam pulls down on my neck which drove me nuts. In all honesty it was a waste of money, but my only saving grace is perhaps it will come in handy when I learn Alto Sax someday. Maybe with a lighter horn it wouldn't be so uncomfortable. I will say, the Balam does look very nice.

    You are correct about not aiming to be John Coltrane or Dexter Gordon. Both of them were not aiming to be Lester Young or Charlie Parker either. They were aiming to be themselves, as you should be. Your aim with playing should be to feel like you are speaking or singing because you are only playing one tone at a time just like when speaking or singing. I don't know if any teacher has told you this yet. Like vocalizing, it won't happen naturally if your head is full of extraneous thoughts or tensions. Like vocalizing, you should also be developing your range of dynamics, piano to forte, as you play. It is why Prez said learning the lyrics to songs was so important. Balancing dynamics makes your playing meaningful. Listening is as important as playing. Anyway, the main thing is enjoying the process, which you seem to be doing just fine.

    Sounds like you're making a lot of progress. However can't help but notice: Your shoulders are elevated and clearly very tense, your neck is also at an unnatural angle. These are leading to a pinched tone and jerky fingering transitions. Try to do some long tone exercises in a mirror. Focus on keeping your muscles relaxed and maintaining the same posture you have when the sax isn't in your hands. This will improve everything you're doing and allow you to play longer with less fatigue and strain.

They lure unsuspected victims with all kinds of promises to get them signed up with their credit/debit cards and then start to charge them immediately even though the ad claims with a trial period. If you read the find prints, you will see the credit/debit card gets charged immediately once the account gets signed up. Musescore use to give free download and now they start to charge. I don't fall for such a free scamming offer unless they change their scamming offer, i.e. We will give you an absolute 7-days free trial account with unlimited downloads sans any credit/debit card and your account will automatically be cancelled at the end of the trial period unless you update your account with payment before the trial period ends! I bet you they don't dare to make such an offer. If all you want is to get the sheets in PDF or MIDI file format, you can find some Musescore download plugins for your web browser to download the sheets and they are free sans any needs for credit/debit cards. I would prefer to download both and then import the MIDI file into Musescore for making some necessary changes/corrections. I just hope this helps.

    Well done from a alto saxophonist and having a very good mouthpiece makes a difference in your playing. Keep the practice up sounding good mate

    Hey man, great playing. Squeaking on the high G is quite common, even i do it sometimes after 6 years of playing 😅. That G is when the octave mechanism switches from the neck to the side which causes it to be a bit awkward. I find that singing or tightening your embochure helps prevent sqeaking. Good luck on your journey!

      Thanks for explaining why the high G can be troublesome. I'll keep practicing it and hopefully the squeak frequency decreases over time.

    great video dude, we are on the same journey i just switched to tenor for roughly 1 month, and still focus on practicing on the low notes on tenor good luck

      The low notes on tenor are tricky. I was practicing them last night and it's a balancing act of breath force and embouchure. However they are very satisfying when played correctly, which for me is probley about 50% of the time.

    Hi, Evan. Say, man...Nice work! For only 10 months you sound pretty good! lol... And only a few 'squawks'! Thanks so much for the video and I'm looking forward to observing your progress. Peace (btw, glad your arm is healing well.)

      Yep the squeaks and swauks happen sometimes. I'd have to spend an hour or more to try and get a perfect song out but I don't think that really depicts where I'm at as a beginner. Thank you for watching and commenting!
